Inc. 3223 Silver Pond Court Charlotte, NC 28210 From the Author This disk unlike the previous two disks of the Federation will definitely put your Squad Leader abilities to the test. The storyline continues where Azarius Under Fire left off and strategically positions you for the fourth disk of the Federation Collection Winds of Steel. Now more than ever, you will find more complex and treacherous missions ahead of you. Only the strong will survive. But strength comes in many forms, perhaps you have what it takes to meet the challenges that await you. One item that will definitely aid you in your missions is the Advanced Tactical Training School. We are literally swamped with orders for this disk. At first, when we decided whether or not to create such a utility, there was question whether or not, individuals would find a need to have a highly ranked, superman of a Squad Leader go in on missions. Apparently there is, not only do you need to have a "Kick-Ass" Rambo/Swartzenegger like Squad Leader for the Federation Collection, but more importantly we believe many of you out there are starting to build up your Squad Leader in preparation for OmniTrend's next IGS (Interlocking Gaming System) game, Rules of Engagement. Either way, you can't go wrong, the Advanced Tactical Training School is one hell of an investment. If for anything, the training manual makes for great reading and offer some other insight into deployment and tactics. Kleptnir, Steve Nolan President and Executive Publisher Modern Day Publishing Co., Inc. 12/30/89 Prologue The white mist slowly rose from the cold, dank waters of the marshlands as the two figures slowly made their way across the swamp. The distant sounds of buzzing insects echoed across the marsh. The two Scouts looked around as they inched their way forward. They had been crossing the marsh now for over three hours, and had found only negative contact with the rebels. Their only encounter was with an angry terradon as they accidentally discovered its nest. Kim held up his hand and motioned for Beletsky to come over. "What's up Corporal?" "Let's take five and try to make contact with Top." Beletsky took off his rucksack and propped it up against a tree as Corporal Kim sat down on a log. "Black Jack this is Iron Talon over." The scratchy sound of a squelching radio answered back. Kim tried again. "Black Jack this is Iron Talon over. Come in Black Jack..." Kim stood up. "This marsh is too dense, I can't get out. Guess I'm gonna have to climb up one of these bitches." he said patting a tree. Beletsky cupped his hands together. Kim leaned on his shoulder and placed his foot into Beletsky's grip. "One, two... three." Beletsky heaved Kim up the tree. Kim took hold of a nearby branch and hauled himself higher and higher into the tree. About three quarters up the tree he stopped and adjusted his helmet's frequencies. "Black Jack, Black Jack this is Iron Talon, come in please. Black Jack this is Iron Talon can you read me, over." The faint voice of Sergeant Krantz replied back. "This Black Jack Two, come in Iron Talon. What's your sit-rep over?" "We're about halfway across our objective. I think you can begin to move your people out. We've laid a path for you to follow. Stay on the yellow path. Repeat stay on the yellow path. All trails are marked yellow. Iron Talon out." Kim refrained from mentioning that they were in the marshlands, for fear of the rebels monitoring their frequency. Yet to be positively sure, he informed Krantz that his men were to follow the yellow markers, where as in fact they were to follow the red. Hopefully if the rebels were on to them, they'd follow the yellow." "I made contact with Krantz, they're on the way and should be-" Beletsky looked up at Kim who pressed himself up against the tree. Kim pointed to the east and held up five fingers. Beletsky switched on his camosuit activator, grabbed both Kim's and his own rucksack and darted off into the nearby jungle side. Kim stood motionless as the rebels came closer and closer. Very slowly he inched his hand towards his utility belt, activating his camosuit, disappearing from view. Where in the hell did they come from? They must of been following them the entire time? Yet they marched on as if they weren't suspecting a thing. Perhaps they weren't on to them after all. Kim scanned the area for more. Off in the distance about four hundred meters he saw some movement! Zooming in his thermoscanner, he picked up an additional dozen or so coming from the west. Kim switched off the scanner and looked for Beletsky, he was well hidden enough. He then glanced down where they were both resting moments before. Shit! He left his rifle propped up against the tree. He shot a glance towards Beletsky, he too had seen the rifle at the same time. Damn, the rebels were now only a few meters away. Kim reached for the stun pistol packed into his rucksack and realized Beletsky had it with him. He was unarmed and helpless... looking down he lowered himself into a crouching position, slid his knife from his boot and waited. The small group of five rebels was part of an advanced recon team sent out in front of the main body of their fellow comrades about five hundred meters behind. They all knew that there was little chance of finding the marines in the marsh. It was too easy to get confused and lost. They would be foolish to try crossing the swamp in hopes of getting back to Freeport, but the Zollanti officer wanted the swamp checked out nevertheless. Janson stopped and reached for his canteen. Taking a long sip of water he let out a deep sigh and screwed on the cap of the canteen. About that same time he noticed what looked to be a rifle leaning up against a tree. Hurriedly he struggled with his canteen as he hooked it on his utility belt. He didn't want any of his comrades to spot the prize and take the credit away from him. Janson knew that if he found the rifle, not only would he stand a chance of getting recognition for helping to find the rebels, but he would most likely be allowed to keep the Federation M19 Laser Rifle and return the old, outdated Zollanti Single fire repeater he had been issued almost six months ago. Janson broke into a slight jog, caught up with the rest of his group, passed them and ran towards the tree. "Look what I found!" he proclaimed. Throwing his rifle down to the ground he picked up the new one and checked its charge. "Sergeant, look what private Janson found!" "Where did you find that?" asked the Sergeant as he held up his hand for him to hand over the new equipment. He knew if he gave it to the Sergeant, he'd never see it again. "It was right here." he proclaimed as he turned back around towards the large burly tree, trying to ignore the Sergeant's eager outstretched hands. "Let me see the rifle, Private." "You know, there might be some marines around here." "Private... Let me see the rifle." "Who knows they just might be up in the trees." he said ignoring the Sergeant as he looked up into the tree. That's when he thought he saw something. "This is the last time I am going to say it again Private Janson. Let me see that damn rifle!" Janson continued to stare up into the tree until the Sergeant reached out and took hold of the rifle. Janson instinctively tugged back on the rifle, not wanting to release it. Kim knew it would be only a minute or two before someone would spot him. The other main body of rebels was only two hundred meters away. If they ever needed a distraction to escape, he'd have to do it now. Clenching the hilt of his knife with both hands, the seven inch blade pointed downwards, Kim leapt into the air directly on top of the larger rebel, they had called Sergeant. He would have to use his momentum and weight to hope to penetrate the ablative armored suit. The force of the impact knocked the three of them to the ground, including the rifle. Janson slowly got to his knees as he saw the Sergeant roll over, a huge, blood covered blade pointing grotesquely out of the base of his neck seemed to freeze the eighteen year old rebel in his tracks. Suddenly the young rebel looked over at the rifle laying on the ground. Crouching to his knees he leapt for the rifle as an invisible force hit him, sprawling him backwards towards the marsh. Getting hold of the dry land he tried to haul himself up when he realized that they were being attacked by a marine in a camo-suit. He was waiting in the tree the entire time. It was an ambush! Janson called out to the other men who were looking down at the still body of the Sergeant. Before the words of warning could leave his very lips, the surrounding jungle side erupted into an explosion of laser light coming from two different directions. Janson instinctively released his grip on the dry embankment and slid back towards the cold waters of the marsh. Beletsky saw Kim make his move and take down the first man struggling over the rifle. Kim managed to retrieve his rifle and dive over a fallen log. The two Special Forces Marines opened up on full automatic at the same time. The other rebels never had a chance. The intense field of fire literally cut them down to the ground. Kim stood up behind the log, glanced down at the small pile of smoking bodies. One of them groaned out for help. Kim quickly fired two quick blasts into the rebel's back, silencing him for good. Beletsky appeared from the jungle and threw the Corporal his rucksack. Kim reached inside and pulled out a yellow die marker. Spraying the invisible paint on the large tree, he turned back to Beletsky, who was busily checking out the swarm of rebels approaching from the west "They're on to us!" "Right, let's get the hell out of here!" Play TOC 01 (Use Squad Leader Kim for this scenario) CHAPTER ONE The sun slowly rose over the horizon as the rays of light began to penetrate the thick green canopy of trees. Sergeant Steiner made his way to the front of the small column of tired men and stopped besides Corporal Simms as she was busily getting readings on here detector. She stopped, looked up at the Sergeant, then looked back down at her detector. "We got big problems Top." "What do you got-" "Looks like we have rebel patrols all over this sector. We have to head south towards the marshlands and find Beletsky's and Kim's path. This damn jungle is so thick, all we have to do is stray two or three degrees off our course and we'll miss the markers." "That's why I chose you to lead us." "Thanks, I'm a Communications Officer not a Navigator." "Yeah, but just triangulate their last recorded message and you should be able to locate their origination point and calculate the distance back and we should be able to get on the right course." "Yeah I know that, but we got rebels all over the area," she motioned towards the detector. "We got to find Kim and Beletsky, but more importantly we can't let ourselves be discovered." Steiner patted her on the shoulders and stood up. "Just keep up the good work, and you'll get us out of here." Turning back towards the rest of his tired group. "Okay people, saddle up and come here." The other five men circled him and knelt down on one knee. "Corporal Kim is going to find us a way out of here and get us on Kim's and Beletsky's path markers. We're going to have to march all day and into the night, without stopping. We got one hell of a long hump in front of us, that's why we've been resting up for the last couple of hours. If for whatever reason you get separated from the main group, I want you to try to find the markers. Kim and Beletsky have marked their trail with die spray. You can only view it with your thermoscanners. Follow the red markers, he said to use the yellow, but I think he said that to throw the rebels off our scent. Our objective is to reach an old abandoned processing plant about five clicks from here. There is a shit load of rebels searching these sectors, so stay frosty at all times. Now move out, we got a mission to do." Play Scenario TOC 02 (Linked with 2 other scenarios) (Use Squad Leader Sergeant Steiner for this mission) CHAPTER TWO Night was now quickly descending upon them. Kim shifted his weight evenly upon the thick tree branch as he scanned the darkening forest for signs of movement. Beletsky had back tracked down their trail and began to set up hidden proximity charges down the false paths, in hopes of catching a few rebels. About a half hour later Beletsky returned, tired and hungry. Kim lowered himself out of the tree and sat down on the soft wet sand of the marsh. "All the ambushes set up?" "Yeah, I used up the last of the charges, all we got left is one neutron." he handed the Corporal the small yellow and black disc." "Steiner and the others should have been here hours ago." "I know, I'm beginning to wonder if they made it through the marsh." "They probably didn't find our markers and got lost." "You don't think they listened to you and followed the yellow markers?" "No, Top's too smart for that." "I still don't understand why our comlinks aren't working." "I don't know, I tried the whole time you were gone, even you couldn't pick me up. My only guess is that we're so close to the processing plant that the building is coated with something inside that's jamming our frequencies beyond 15 meters." "This sucks..." Beletsky kicked the soft sand into the air. "Well where in the hell are they? We can't just-" Both men looked down at the motion detector as it began to beep. Kim grabbed the device and his rifle and headed for cover as Beletsky took his rifle and ran towards the opening of the trail. "What do you got?" he whispered. "Kim frantically adjusted the controls of the listening device trying to focus in on the movement. "Dunno... looks like we have five or six headed to the southwest and about another twenty or so from the south." "You think that's Steiner?" "Damn if I know. There's only five of them, not seven." Beletsky strained his eyes as he peered down the trail. "What if a couple of them bought the farm?' "Could be them if that's the case... It does look like the main group is starting to veer off towards the others." "What's their distance?" "About one click from here." "Which way are they headed?" "South... no now they are moving southwest from here." "That's where I planted those proximity charges!" Kim's mind began to race. If that was Steiner and the others, they were walking straight towards the land mines. They would be wiped out... unless they signaled them in some way. The Comlinks were useless. Yet they had to do something. "Listen up Beletsky. We got to signal Top before he walks into your ambush. I want you to head back down the trail towards the others. Here take the motion detector. I'm gonna set off the neutron bomb. The flash of explosion should be enough to get Top's attention. We got to link back up with them, I'll be right behind you." Blaine was carrying Simms over his shoulder as he struggled to keep up with the others. She hadn't moaned in over an hour, and probably had slipped back into unconscienceness. They knew they were headed in the right direction, but when the rocket exploded next to Simms it not only injured her, but it also destroyed the motion detector and probably their last hopes of finding Kim and Beletsky. The small group ran through the jungle. Blaine, standing well over six four, was by far the strongest of the team, but he too was beginning to waver. The black twenty four year old, simply concentrated on the ground staggering one step in front of the other. The rebels were closing beginning and were only a hundred meters behind them. It was only a matter of time, they couldn't keep running... it was over. Steiner stopped the group and motioned for Krantz to come over. Blaine dropped to his knees and lowered the fragile body of Simms to ground. The cold waters of the swamp swirled around her motionless body. Blaine lifted her faceplate and looked down at her tired, still face. She was still breathing, but it was shallow and raspy. He quickly increased the oxygen intake in her exosuit and replaced her faceplate. Sergeant Krantz walked over to Blaine. "How's she doing." "Not too good Sergeant. She's tough, she'll stick it out as long as she can, but if we move her anymore, the internal bleeding may kill her. We got to stop." "Let me go see what Top says. Hang on Blaine, he'll get us out of this. He always has in the past." Sergeant Krantz ran up to Steiner and knelt down, grasping for air. "What's... what's up?" "I don't think we can go on like this. We don't know how far off we strayed from our course. We could be miles from the processing plant." "Look at the others. We can't go on anymore. I think its time to destroy the datapacks. Are only hope is to set up a perimeter and wait it out. If the rebels keep chasing us hopefully we can set up an ambush, a complete firezone and just duke it out to the end. If it looks like it is lost, we destroy the data." "I hate to give up when we've come this far. But God only knows how far we must have strayed from the markers. Maybe at first light, if we last throughout the night, we'll stand a better chance of finding the processing plant." "Good, get the men into a defensive position. Have them dig in and set up a firezone perimeter. We're going to make our last stand right here." Play TOC 03 (Use Squad Leader Sergeant Sleiner for this mission) CHAPTER 3 Wave after wave continued to pour into the perimeter for the last half hour. Time after time, the Special Forces somehow managed to survive each attack and repulse each rebel assault. The rebels now had them where they wanted them. Already the Zollanti Officer had caught up with the advanced unit of rebels and was busily setting up plans to surround the marines and launch one more final assault. But this time, it would be the last, his main unit of a hundred rebels were only a few minutes away from regrouping and setting up positions. The Zollanti looked down at his holographic map of the area. He chuckled to himself as he traced his clawed finger across the map towards the processing plant. His calculations were correct, the marines were indeed trying to reach the plant after all. How ironic he thought, as he looked back across the edge of the marsh. They were only two hundred meters away. Why did they stop? If they hadn't stopped and set up a defensive position, they could have made it to the plant. Perhaps they had given up all hope to survive? These humans are strange animals indeed he thought to himself. He looked down at his chronometer, only thirty seconds before he launched his final push for the marines. Soon the data packs would be his, soon they would find the listening post, soon they would take the planet, and with the emperor's will, invade the planet, enslave all the humans and take Azarius XA7 for the glory of the Empire! The Zollanti grabbed his plasma rifle and ran towards his men. He would lead the final charge. He would finally get a chance for revenge and bring honor back into his clan for his father's death, 20 years ago. The black nova incident would be glorified with his deeds in battle. His two hearts began to pump harder as he prepared to lead the rebel scum into battle. Suddenly the entire northern edge of the jungle lit up in bright flash of energy. He shuddered under the impact of the sound waves as they rushed across the jungle deafening all. He dropped his rifle and clutched his ears and the jungle echoed in a mad roar of a neutron explosion. A moment later he turned and saw a huge bright fiery mushroom cloud rising up in the distance towards the plant. Sergeant Steiner and the others looked up at the glowing cloud as it stormed over the jungle top. For a brief instant he thought that the rebels were using atomics on them. Then it sunk in that it was a signal from Recon team. Like a beacon in the night, they had to follow the light. "Saddle up people, grab the wounded we moving out in ten seconds. Grab everything you can and follow me!" Play TOC 04 (Use Squad Leader Sergeant Steiner for this Mission) CHAPTER 4 "This way! We can cut through here and get to the processing plant!" Beletsky shouted as he motioned for the others to follow. He ran up to Blaine and took Simms. Blaine unstrapped his laser rifle and began firing down the trail. Two rebels fell to the ground dead as they made their way around the corner of the path. Sergeant Krantz stopped and called out towards Blaine. "Come on Blaine move out!" Blaine refused to hear him. We was like a hungry cat stalking his prey. He fired four more times down the trail killing two more rebels. "Come on Private move your black butt!" Blaine fired two more times bringing down another. He turned and waved him off. "Get to the plant! I'll stall them." he didn't wait for a response, he simply set his rifle on automatic and ran down the overgrown trail, firing before him cutting down the rebels in a succession of short, quick bursts of energy. Sergeant Krantz looked back at the others already racing off. He called out on his comlink to Steiner. "Regroup at the edge of the jungle before you get to the plant. I'm going after Blaine." "Where's Blaine?" shouted the Top Sergeant. "I'll explain later." Blaine ran across the path firing on full automatic. He must have cut down a half dozen or so rebels as he made his way down the trail. Suddenly as he dodged around a bend, he came face to face with a Zollanti. He stood in awe for brief instant as he looked at the seven foot tall creature. Blaine quickly raised his rifle to fire, but it had overheated. The alien grimaced an evil smile and slowly raised his own rifle and fired from the hip. The impact hit Blaine square in the chest throwing him to the ground. He tried to get up but the Zollanti fired once more, this time hitting his shoulder, spinning him back around, throwing him down to the ground once again. Blaine tried to get up again, but found he couldn't move, the pain was too great. The huge alien walked over to the prone human and kicked his rifle away from his reach and towered over him, placing his foot on his injured chest. The creature lowered the rifle to Blaine's head and laughed a disgustingly snicker of self satisfaction. Blaine winced his eyes and spit at the alien. The alien stopped laughing and glared down at him in hate as he wiped the bloody spittle from his face. For a moment he admired the human's courage, but now it was time to kill the animal. One death for many, but it would suffice. Suddenly, from around the corner of the trail, another human appeared. The Zollanti raised his rifle to fire, but Blaine mustered up all his remaining energy and rolled out from under its footing, causing it to miss its target. Sergeant Krantz fired three shots into the Zollanti's chest knocking it backwards. Blaine rolled over, and grabbed his own rifle. The Zollanti regained its footing but was suddenly hammered in the back by Blaine's rifle. He really didn't expect the gun to kick as hard as it did, but he had forgotten he had left it on full automatic. The bright laser beams stitched the alien's back wide open as it fell to its knees in defeat. Sergeant Krantz ran up to the kneeling figure and swiped it in the face with the butt of his rifle. The alien rolled sideways and twitched in anger, rage and pain. Blaine got to his feet, walked over to the Zollanti and pulled the pins from two grenades, that was attached to the back of his utility belt. Krantz smiled as he and Blaine ran off up the trail back towards the other. The Zollanti rolled around frantically, trying to reach the grenades as the first one exploded sending him six feet into the air. The second explosion ripped the lifeless body in two as it exploded in mid-air, sending both halves in opposite directions. Play T0C 05 (Use Squad Leader Seyweant Steiner for this mission) CHAPTER 5 The sounds of running boots echoed around the old compound as the Special Forces Team ran towards the entrance. Sergeant Steiner stood by the locking mechanism and waited for the group to enter. He looked back over his shoulder and glanced around for Krantz and Blaine. All ready some of the rebels were beginning to gather up around the jungle's edge and began firing at them. Where was Krantz and Blaine? "Has anyone seen Krantz or Blaine?" "Try reaching them on the Comlink!" shouted Grism. "Won't work, we're too close to the plant, these walls are emitting some sort of jamming frequency." replied Corporal Kim. "How do you know it'll close?" asked Kim. "Good question," replied Steiner as he looked at the mechanism. "It better or this trip will end real quick like." "Look here they come!" shouted Beletsky. The rebels were beginning to chase the two as they entered the compound's outside perimeter. The entire squad lined up and shouted out encouragement for them to run faster. Steiner forced everyone back inside the building and began to close the door. The heavy steel reinforced doors slowly began to inch their way close as the Blaine and Krantz appeared around the comer diving into the small remaining opening. Steiner quickly released two grenades and threw them out the small remaining gap between the doors, an instant before they closed. A few seconds later they could bear angry rebels banging on the door. A brief instant later, two muffled explosions rocked the doors, then there was silence. "Listen up people. We aren't out of this one by a long shot. I'm sure it won't be long before the rebels find another way into the plant. Krantz, take Blaine and Simms up to medical and get them patched up. Kim and Beletsky, check out this level and look for another way in. Grism you and I are going to find the communications room and try making contact with the Commander back at the Marine Garrison in Freeport. Now move out people, act like you got little time to do it." The teams separated and went their own way, carrying out Steiner's orders. Sergeant Krantz remained behind and walked over to Steiner. "Well, how long do you think we'll hold up in here?" "I give them an hour, two at the most, and they'll be inside." "Then we better get on the horn and let the Commander know we're here!" Play TOC 06 (Use Squad Leader Sergeant Steiner for this mission) CHAPTER 6 Sergeant Steiner hung up the receiver and turned to his men. A sigh of relief broke over his face as he sat down in the dust covered chair. "I got through to the CO." The men broke down and laughed, some cried, others just sat down on a nearby table or chair, exhaustion and relief simply overcame them when they heard the news. The Sergeant waited a few minutes and began again. "I gave him the story and told him we still had the datapacks. He's getting his men ready and they'll be on the way as soon as possible. I figure they should be here in twenty to thirty minutes. We're out of their transporter range so they're going to come in on assault crafts. We have rebel penetration on all levels except this one. It will only be a matter of time before they figure out where we are hiding out. Soon they'll make a push for the upshafts and try storming this level. I don't have to tell you how important it is for us to hold on just a little while longer. The Commander will bring in reinforcements shortly." Steiner stood up and unloaded his rucksack on the table. "Everybody throw in their weapons. I want to see how much firepower we've got left." Each of the marines placed their remaining weapons on the table and stood back. "Okay we got two grenades a piec|e, with some extra clips of ammunition. It's not enough, but it'll have to do. Each of you know you posts, so gather up your weapons and move out" "Remember people," he shouted to them as they were about to leave the room. "We can't afford to let one of those bastards into this level. Krantz, I want you to bring Simms in here, she'll be safer in here. Is she conscious?" "Yeah, she came to a little while ago. She'll be all right, but she's going spend a long time in the infirmary." "Give her the data packs and grenade. If they break into the room, she'll know what to do."
