No longer needs the *.rsc file, as it is embedded into the program to save about 37k of memory at run time. Optimized some of the code, and generally made mostly internal changes. It does about 8 partitions on a 20 meg drive in about 1 second. The program will display the free space on each partition, listing both bytes and Kilobytes and percent used. A total of the same is kept at the bottom of the dialog, and the user may deselect active drives at will, and the current total will be continuously updated. If you are running a bbs, or collect alot of software on your hard drive, I am sure you will find Bytfree to be useful. The program is fairly unique in that it is both a desk accessory and a program at the same time. Just rename to bytefree.acc to run it as a desk accessory. The file is arced with docs. This program will do a variety of disk formats including 9 or 10 sector, 80 or 82 tracks, regular or fast format. It will also format Magic disks or place an MSDOS boot sector on a disk so that it can be used by PC DITTO (or any MSDOS machine). It can also write an excutable boot sector on a disk to do a variety of things (do a cold start, bypass an HD autoboot, run a program called COMMAND.PRG, turn disk write verify off, set your ST to medium res or set the system clock). It will also intelligently copy regular or Magic disks with a format destination disk option (will copy a disk in one pass and has option for multiple copies). Version 3.0 adds a few more options including HFS support for Spectre 128, a step rate option and two more boot options. This version is shareware. Shareware donators will receive the help file (not included with this version) and the v.3 desk accessory version. . tJ.. tFORMT236DOC t Kg)FORMT236HLP t VFORMT236PRG t [ - CSS FORMAT & DISK COPY - A Complete Disk Format & Copy Utility by Mike Mitchell Copyright (c) 1988 by Michael J. If you find this program useful and decide to keep and use it, please compensate the author for his time and effort by sending $6.00 to register your copy today. Just fill out the registration form at the end of this file and send it to: Michael J. Mitchell c/o Catspaw Software Systems P.O. Box 362 Garden City, MI 48135 ATTN: FORMT236 FORMT236 may be copied and distributed freely provided it is not modified and this documentation and the FORMT236.HLP file is included along with the program. FORMT236 may NOT be included with any other product for any reason whatsoever without the written permission of the author. LANGUAGE: FORMT236 was written and compiled using GFA Basic by GFA Systemtechnik from Michtron, Inc. 576 South Telegraph Road Pontiac, MI 48053 Phone (313)-334-5700 OPERATION: To run the FORMT236 program, just double-click the filename. In a moment the title/work screen will appear. You can exit the program by clicking on the exit box. OPTIONS: The options you have to pick from are, Sides, Number of Tracks, Number of Sectors per Track, Drive, Number of Sectors per Fat Table, Disk Information and Disk Copy. 1) Sides, This option is easy to understand, 1=Single sided and 2=Double sided. Just click on either box. 2) Number of Tracks, This option has three selections to pick from. 80 Tracks, 82 Tracks and USER. The first two are simple enough, let's look at the USER option. Click on the USER CSSFORMAT Version 2.36 10/30/1988 Page 1 box and another selection box will appear. You can now pick from 20 to 86 tracks. Holding down the left mouse button on the UP or DOWN box and the number of tracks will increase or decrease in slow mode. Holding down the right button will give the user fast mode. Special Note, Not all ST drives will do 86 tracks, I have the old Epson drives (the ones with the square eject button on the right hand side) and they will format up to 84 tracks with no problem. Using an extended track format over 82 tracks all the time may knock your drive head(s) out of alignment. 3) Sectors per Track, Here you also have three options to pick from 9 Sectors, 10 Sectors and USER. The USER option works just like the one in the number of tracks except that you will be able to pick from 1 to 11 sectors per track. Special Note, 11 sectors per track formats can be unstable and can not be read by the desk top. I do not recommend it's use. Try using 10 sectors per track with 82 tracks per disk. 4) Drives, I really don't think I have to explain this option. Click on the A box to format drive A: and the B box to format drive B:. 5) Number of Sectors per Fat, Here's the best part of all. The Atari desk top format always has 5 sectors per FAT table with two FAT tables per disk. After reading about the Atari disk layout I found that you don't need 5 sectors per FAT. I won't go into detail on why but I will tell you this, if you are formatting Single sided disks all you need is 2 sectors per FAT, Double sided you will need no more than 3 sectors per FAT. This will free up 4 to 6 more sectors for data. DISK INFORMATION: This option will allow the user to retrieve all the format layout information about the disk being checked. Use the default drive select option to select the drive to check. The information returned will tell you how many sectors per track, number of tracks, number of sectors per FAT, number of sides and much, much more. This is done by reading the Boot Sector and Bios Parameter Block (BPB) of the disk/drive being checked. DISK COPY: Once you click on disk copy the disk copy option box will pop up. At this point you will be able to select the source and destination drives, write with or without verify and select auto format. 1) Auto FORMAT With the auto format ON the destination disk will be formatted to match the source disk. With the auto format turned OFF you will have to make sure the destination disk is preformatted to match CSSFORMAT Version 2.36 10/30/1988 Page 2 the source. This is done once again reading the Boot sector of the source disk and passing the parameters found to the format command for the destination disk. 2) WRITE VERIFY With write verify ON each track will be read back after the write to insure that the data written was correct. In the OFF position the data is just written and NOT read back for verification. Authors Note, Just after getting the ST over two years ago I wrote a small AUTO FOLDER program that would turn the write verify off and have been writing without verify ever since and have never lost a byte of data. 3) SOURCE & DESTINATION DRIVES Selecting source and destination drives is quite easy so I won't go into detail on this. I will mention that if your system has only one drive connected then all the B drive boxes will be inactive and the defaults for disk copy are, auto format ON, source drive is A, destination drive is A, and write verify is OFF. On a two drive the defaults are the same except for the destination drive which is now drive B. 4) DISK COPY OVERVIEW You can copy from drive A to B, A to A, B to A, or B to B on a two drive system and just A to A on a single drive system. One other thing I should mention, when you click on the copy disk box the program will start working. You will not be prompted to insert the disks to be copied. You will be prompted if the source and destination drives are the same and it will take more than one pass to copy the complete disk. At these prompts you may press any key to continue. You will also be prompted during the formatting of the destination disk. ERROR TRAPPING: Error trapping in the program is very generic do to the amount of memory it takes up. I did this because I still wanted to copy a double sided disk in just one pass (one to read and one to write) on a one meg machine. HELP: If you click on the help box you will be given a brief explanation of the program options in page format. You can use the left mouse button or any key to continue to the next page or the right mouse button or the Esc key to abort. UPDATES: Registered users of FORMT236 will receive program updates for $2.00 to cover shipping and handling. If an update becomes available the user will be notified by mail. FORMATTING: Before formatting a disk you must first select the number of sides you want to format, the number of tracks to format, the number of sectors per track, the number of sectors per Fat and the drive you want to format. Select number of sides by clicking on the number 1 for single sided and 2 for double sided. To select the number of tracks to format click on the number 80 for a standard track count, use 82 for the extended format or click on SET and you will be able to select from 20 to 86 tracks per disk provided you drive will support the track count. CSS FORMAT HELP Version 2.36 Page 1 To select the number of sectors per track to format click on the number 9 for a standard sector count, use 10 for the extended format with or without extending the tracks or click on SET and select from 1 to 11 sectors per track provided your drive will support the format. NOTE: We DO NOT recommend using 11 sectors per track because it is so unstable for reliable data storage. Selecting the number of sectors per FAT to use. The standard is 5 sectors. You can select from 2 to 6 sectors per FAT. We recommend using 2 for a single sided disk and 3 for a double sided disk. To select the default drive for formatting just click on A or B depending on which one you want to work with. If you only have one drive the B drive boxes will be inactive on both the format and copy screens. PO BOX 369 DONALD OREGON 97020 HACK'N COPY IS SHAREWARE Shareware is programs that can be copied and given away but not sold. You are free to distribute this program in any manner you please as long as this file and the program list are distributed with the program. You can not sell the program. It may be included with other shareware or public domain programs on a diskette that is sold for $5.00 (five dollars) or less. If you paid for this program and did not get it from Mount Hood Software Group please send us a note telling us who is selling it. This program was originally written for a publisher that is no longer in business. After getting the copyright back a number of options were considered for marketing the program. A number of persons in the Portland Atari Club wanted to see if ST users would support the shareware concept so we decided to try it first. Mt Hood Software asks you for a $10 donation to help compensate the author for his time in writing this program. Copy programs are obsolete the day they are released. They need to be updated every two or three weeks to keep current with new protection schemes. If this one is to be updated regularly, the author is going to have to be compensated or he will not do it. This version copies programs; future versions will completely remove the protection so they can be run from hard disks. You can watch for future versions of this program on various bulletin boards or send $15 to Mt Hood Software and we will mail you the next version when it becomes available. Send us $100 and we will mail you the next 8 versions. If we do not update the program 8 times in the next year we will refund for the unsent copies. The next version will be available as soon as there are a number of programs released that can not be archived by this program. The HACK'N COPY TOOL KIT may be included in a future release. This collection of disk routines is what we use in analyzing program protection. This general purpose program will allow you to dump and modify any sector or track to the CRT or printer. With a small amount of knowledge you can also restore files that were accidently deleted. This program currently exists. However, it was designed for the authors' own use and is not as bullet proof as it should be. Mount Hood also has a general purpose format program. It also will be included as an option of this program. Some people have stated that they would like to see this program available as a desk accessory. Send us your views on that. If enough $10 bills think it is a good idea, it will happen. (c) 1987 THE MOUNT HOOD SOFTWARE GROUP page 1 HACK'N COPY is very simple to use. Unlike many other programs on the ST, HACK'N COPY automatically sets the screen resolution to medium or high and configures all other required machine options. (It restores the initial configuration when it exits.) LOADING HACK'N COPY HACK'N COPY may be loaded from a floppy drive, hard disk or even a ram disk. To start HACK'N COPY, just double click the program icon or name line. TYPES OF BACKUPS HACK'N COPY allows you to make three different types of backups. The simplest is a normal sector copy backup that accomplishes the same thing as dragging one disk icon to another disk icon in the desktop. The only difference is that HACK'N COPY is much faster. The second option is a normal sector backup with format. This option allows the destination disk to be unformatted before the backup begins. On a single sided disk this is only 15-20 seconds slower than a simple sector backup. (It is faster to use HACK'N COPY to copy an empty formatted disk than to use TOS to format a blank disk.) If you use this option you can select normal, fast read, or spiral sector placement on the destination disk. Most programs will read the so called fast format a lot faster than the normal track image. It will take HACK'N COPY slightly longer to make the duplicate if you select the fast read option. The spiral read option is probably the best "default" selection. (If this last section has confused you just use normal.) These first two options allow you to verify the destination disk during the backup if you desire. You may also verify that two disks are identical by selecting one of these options and the verify only option to compare two disks. The third type of backup HACK'N COPY will perform is a nibble backup. This option will backup most protected disks. SELECTING OPTIONS Selecting options is very simple with HACK'N COPY. To change any option first press the key to make the option selection display appear. Use the arrow keys to position the cursor to the field you wish to change and enter the new value. If you press or the original value will be restored. When you press the or an arrow key the new value will be saved. When you have selected your options just press to return to the main screen. The options are very straight forward and self explanatory for the most part. The option for the number of times to retry errors defaults to three because that is the standard TOS value. If you select the REPORT ERRORS option, the program will stop if it encounters an error during a sector copy or a sector with format copy. (Errors are a normal part of (c) 1987 THE MOUNT HOOD SOFTWARE GROUP page 2 many protection schemes, so the nibble copy does not report errors). The STARTING TRACK and ENDING TRACK value should be normally left at zero and 79. The nibble backup will backup tracks 80 and 81 automatically if the limits are zero and 79. Some protection formats have data in those tracks. You might set the ending track to a smaller value if you know there is only data on the first few tracks of a disk. The options default to what should be the most common backup for many people so most of the time you may not have to change any of them. MULTIPLE COPIES HACK'N COPY will allow you to make multiple copies if you are not in the nibble backup mode. After making the first backup HACK'N COPY will ask you to insert another destination disk; just insert the disk and press return to make the next backup without rereading the source disk. If the prompt appears and you do not wish to make any more copies just press to quit. STEP RATE SPEED Some third party disks for the ST do not seek at the same step rate as the drives supplied by ATARI. You can use these drives with HACK'N COPY by selecting a slower step rate. To determine the proper step rate, first set the step rate code to two and make a sector copy with format. Then verify that the backup matches the original. Do this in two passes, DO NOT USE COPY WITH VERIFY until you are sure you have the proper step rate. If the backup does not verify set the parameter to one and repeat the operation. If that does not work try it with the parameter set to zero. After you have determined a step rate that will work, you may use all HACK'N COPY parameters normally. RUNNING THE PROGRAM Once you have selected the correct options (or immediately after entry if you are using the default selections), you can start the backup operation by just pressing . The program will then prompt you with a message to put your disk or disks into the proper drive(s). After inserting your disk, press again and the program will begin the backup. If the destination drive is the same as the source drive it will prompt you again when it needs the destination disk. On some configurations you may have to swap disks more than once. While the program is operating it will display the track it is currently processing. You may stop it at any time by pressing . After you have finished using HACK'N COPY, press to exit to TOS. HINTS IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE If you have trouble making nibble backups of some programs, make the source and destination drives the same. Slight variations in speed and other drive characteristics are normal and may prevent exact backups if (c) 1987 THE MOUNT HOOD SOFTWARE GROUP page 3 different drives are used for the source and destination. Another source of trouble with some systems is that the drives on your system may spin slightly faster than normal. The drives on the ST should spin at 300 RPM +-2%. At 300 Rpm the drive should write 6250 bytes on each track. However, if your drive spins at 306 RPM it will write fewer bytes on a track. This may prevent you from backing up some programs. A protection method used by some manufactures is to write the program using a drive that is spinning slower than normal. This will place more data than normal on each track. With a regular backup it is impossible to rewrite this data on the ST. HACK'N COPY attempts to analyze these long tracks and write them so that the protection works correctly. An exact backup of many of the programs currently being released for the ST can not be written on a ST due to various hardware limitations. HACK'N COPY will analyze these programs and attempt to create a operational program for you. However, HACK'N COPY may not backup some programs that have been released since your version of HACK'N COPY was. This is not due to bugs in HACK'N COPY. If you find a program that you can not archive it is likely that there is already a new version of HACK'N COPY available that can. The protection scheme used by some companies (FIRST BYTE is one) is written by a MAC. The variance in the bit to bit time on some of these disks is outside the specification for the disk controller in the ST. We have some diskettes that we have never been able to correctly read the whole diskette correctly. If you have the same misfortune and can not archive one of these disks try the following steps. Set the number of times to retry errors to 9. Then make a sector copy with format of the disk. Due to the number of errors this may take a while. Then make a nibble copy of the disk you just made. The unreliability of this protection scheme will likely make it one of the first ones we completely remove. ECONOMICS When a program like this one is sold by retail stores the list price has to be in the $35 to $40 range. If you look at everyone's (publisher, distributor, and retailer) costs, you can not expect a product to sell for much less. Some mail order operations have less overhead and can sell for less, but someone has to pay for their 800 phone lines. Typically, program updates cost $20 or more. Usually this is a reasonable figure. However, there is a problem with programs like this one. As stated above, it will be obsolete very rapidly. You, the purchaser, do not want to constantly pay $20 for program updates. That is why we are trying shareware. Most users have said they do not mind paying $10 for updates. If you are worried about running programs that come off bulletin boards (we sometimes are) send us $15 and we will send you an original. It costs about $5 to buy a disk, duplicate it, package it, and mail it. There is not a lot of profit in the extra amount but we will do it for people who are concerned. If SYSOPS will send us note we will put it on your BBS system. TIF Software will not be held liable for direct or incidental damages resulting from any defect or omission in these programs or the documentation. These programs have been tested thoroughly but TIF Software can not be held liable if it doesn't work on your system. MegaMatic has been tested to run on the 520 ST, 1040 ST, Mega ST2 and the Mega ST4. It works on an all floppy system and on a system with hard drives. It works on the older roms and the new ones. It works with or without the blitter installed. I've even tested it on a 1040 ST that was running 2 1/2 megs and the new roms. But that doesn't mean it'll run on your system. Long ago I reached a conclusion that "all ST's are not created equal". The documentation and programs included in this arced file, are copyrighted by TIF Software. These programs are NOT public domain, they are shareware. Since MegaMatic is shareware, please feel free to make copies of these programs for you, your users groups, BBS's, ect. But please, make sure that you include these files everytime you distribute it. There is nothing that I hate worse, than not getting all the files needed to make a program perform properly. MEGMATIC.PRG CONFIG.TOS MEGMATIC.DOC As I said earlier, MegaMatic is shareware. If you like it and use it, send TIF Software a few bucks. If you don't like, let us know why. Now, on to the good stuff. Page -1- Introduction (or "where did I come up with this idea") When I first bought my ST, I didn't know anything about the AUTO folder and how to use it. But before too long, I had 5-6 programs in my AUTO folder that 'I just had to have'. Between these 5-6 programs and 3-4 accessories, it was taking forever to boot up my computer (even with a hard drive). So to make life easier (and faster), I decided to take the best ideas from each of these 'AUTO programs' and incorporate them into one program. The first problem that I ran into was that I HATE 'all-in-one' programs. Usually there was only 1 or 2 parts of these 'all-in- one' programs that I used. All the rest of the program (along with my computers memory) was wasted. So I decided to make MegaMatic a 'all-in-one' program where the USER (that's you!) could decide what parts of it THEY wanted to use. In other words, much of MegaMatic is configurable by the user. The parts that are not configurable (listed later in the docs) do not take up any memory after boot up. Once they do their job, they disappear from the computers memory. Also, I HATE AUTO programs that 'asks questions' and then sits there until the user gives an input. I want to be able to turn on my system and go do anything I want and when I come back, it's all up and ready to go. MegaMatic at bootup has two areas where it asks for user input (more on these later). At each spot, MegaMatic will wait for approximately. 1 second for an input. If no input is received, MegaMatic will then continue on and just use the default input. Since I don't know C, Pascal or Modula, I was forced to write MegaMatic in pure 68000 assembly code (it was either that or GfA Basic). MegaMatic was written with HiSoft's DevPac Editor/Assembler. Since MegaMatic was written in 68000 code, you'll find it short (less than 4k) and fast. Also, once MegaMatic has been booted and is running, it only takes 1k of your precious memory to run (that does not count the memory needed for the ramdisk or print spooler however). To make the program user configurable, I also wrote a CONFIG.TOS that goes along with MegaMatic. You HAVE to use the CONFIG.TOS on MegaMatic before using MegaMatic. (more on CONFIG.TOS later) How to install Mega-Matic (or "if you don't follow instructions, don't blame me") ALWAYS make a backup of all the files before attempting to use any of them. MEGMATIC.PRG HAS to be configured with CONFIG.TOS before using it. MEGMATIC.PRG HAS to go into the AUTO folder first. (Sorry guys, but I have to know what some of the lower memory address's are before some other program modifies/changes them.) If you are running a hard drive booter in your AUTO folder, it can go in before the MEGMATIC.PRG. Page -2- Mega-Matic's basic features (or "I thought that this part would never get here") 1) RESETTABLE RAM DISK ** I've heard the pro's and con's about the resettable ram disks. To me, any ram disk that isn't resettable, isn't useable. The resettable ram disk 'saved my bacon' more than once. This ramdisk will survive a normal RESET with no loss of data. But remember, this is not guaranteed!! 99.9% of time it works properly but .1% of the time the system bombs beyond repair and can corrupt the ram disk pointers or the data on the ramdisk. Resettable Ram Disks boot up a little different than 'normal' ram disks. They take two 'passes' to boot up. The first time MegaMatic is booted by the system, it moves parts of itself into high memory (right under the graphics screen). It then modifies some of the lower memory pointers and does a warm reset which then causes it to be booted again. It then looks to see if it's been booted before (by looking for some 'magic' data in high memory). If it has been booted before, it then finishes it's job by hooking some of the lower memory vectors into the program that has been moved under the graphics screen. At that point it returns to TOS and lets the system finish booting up everything else. This ram disk is configurable in size from 128k to 2 meg (minus 24k for 'overhead'...i.e. FAT tables, directories, ect.) with the CONFIG.TOS. Also at powerup, it can be temporarily configured to different sizes. During the first pass (see above paragraph), MegaMatic will display a prompt................ 'Input:' for about a second. If you temporarily need a different sized ram disk from your normal one, all you have to do press certain keys and the system will re-configure the ram disk size for you. This size will last through resets and will only disappear when you power down. (Also see ADDENDUM for additional 'Input:' features.) Here's the keys that you can press to change the ramdisk size. (remember, all these sizes will be less 24k for the 'overhead') 1 - 128k 2 - 192k 3 - 256k 4 - 320k 5 - 384k 6 - 448k 7 - 512k 8 - 576k 9 - 640k 0 - 704k ESC - 768k SHIFT - 832k (for you math types, just add 1 to the number and multiply by 64) The resettable ram disk is configurable (with CONFIG.TOS) as to which drive identifier that you want it set up as. Your choices will be C-P. I always use P for my ram disk because I haven't ever found anything else that uses that drive letter. The only program that ever had problems with my ram disk as drive P was DCopy. He uses some nonstandard figuring and uses drive P as a printer drive. So if you use DCopy, you might not want to use P as your drive indentifier. Page -3- 2) PRINT SPOOLER ** MegaMatic also gives you a configurable print spooler. This print spooler can be configured in size from 16k to 144k. (In the CONFIG.TOS you just enter a value from 1-9. MegaMatic then figures the print spooler size by multiplying 16k times the figure you inputted. If while printing, you want to stop the print spooler, just press the CNTL/SHIFT/ALT-0 keys (the '0' is the one on the numeric keypad, not at the top of the keyboard) all at the same time. This will zero out the print buffer. If you've got a print buffer in your printer, this won't stop the printing until your printers buffer is empty. 3) Disk VERIFY On/Off This feature allows you to turn the disk write verify off or leave it on (on is the system default). You'll find your disk writes are speeded up with VERIFY off. NOTE: Be careful if you have VERIFY turned off. Some drives can give bad writes if there is no VERIFY on. You'll usually know how dependable your drives are. 4) WHICH DRIVES MegaMatic will display which drives are connected to the system at powerup (including ram disk). 5) SCREEN SAVER ** A screen saver will turn your screen 'off' (turn it black on color systems, reverses colors on mono) if you've left your system unattended for a certain period of time. Once you touch the mouse or a key, the screen will return to normal. This is supposedly to stop the monitors from being 'burned in' by displaying the same screen for hours at a time. This screen saver will work on either color or mono systems. You can configure (using CONFIG.TOS) how long the system will wait before it turns the screen saver on (2-9 minutes). I like my screen saver to keep 'flipping'. Going from off to on to off to on...etc. I use it as a timer as well as a screen saver. When I see the screen go dark, I know 7 minutes have passed (my default) and when I see it go back normal again, I know another 7 minutes have passed. You can configure the screen saver to 'flip' or just stay dark with the CONFIG.TOS. In this revision, you can turn the screen-saver routine off by pressing the ALT/SHIFT/CNTL and '(' keys (the '(' is the one on the numeric keypad). You can toggle the screen-saver back on by pressing the ALT/SHIFT/CNTL and ')' keys (the ')' is the one on the numeric keypad). This is nice if you don't want the screen to turn off when you're downloading/uploading a program/file. Page -4- 6) FREE RAM This feature displays the total memory of the system and how much memory is free after booting up. This does not include the memory used by accessories or other auto folder programs booted up after MegaMatic. 7) MEMORY CHECK ** Does a two pass memory check (a fast and a slow memory check), every time you boot up the system. 8) AUTO DESK ** This feature allows for the automatic desktop selection of either a low, medium or high res desktop at bootup (LOWDESK.INF, MEDDESK.INF and HIGHDESK.INF). MegaMatic looks to see which monitor you're using at boot up and if you're using a mono monitor, it will boot up the mono .INF file (HIGHDESK.INF). If you're booting up in color, MegaMatic automatically chooses the MEDDESK.INF (medium res). You can choose to go into low res at powerup by simply pressing any key when you see the following prompts displayed during MegaMatic's second pass (see paragraph in ram disk section describing the two passes)............ 'Hooking in Auto-Desktop selector' 'Installing ' After the word 'Installing', MegaMatic will wait for a short period of time for a keypress. If it see's it, it'll bootup the LOWDESK.INF file. If no key is pressed, it'll bootup MEDDESK.INF. To create each file, you simply go to the res that you want, set the desktop up how you want it and then save the desktop. Then just rename the DESKTOP.INF file to name needed (for low res - LOWDESK.INF, for med res - MEDDESK.INF and for high res - HIGHDESK.INF) I also keep a normal DESKTOP.INF file on my desktop in case I have to change resolutions from the desktop. 9) COLD/WARM RESET Once I got my Mega, I found out that was a 'major pain' to get to the RESET and ON/OFF switch on it (not one of Atari's better ideas). And with the incompatibility of some programs on the Mega, I found myself needing the RESET and ON/OFF button more than ever. So I added two special key combinations that would allow me to do a warm or cold start from the keyboard. Here's the two key combinations.......... ALT/SHIFT/CNTL-* (the '*' is the one on the keypad only) will give you a cold start (POWER OFF) ALT/SHIFT/CNTL-. (the '.' is the one on the keypad only) will give you a warm start (RESET) The features that have the two '**' after their names can be configured so that it won't be attached. Page -5- How to use the CONFIG.TOS (or "aren't we done yet?") As stated earlier, you HAVE to use the CONFIG.TOS before using MegaMatic. All the defaults are set to zero in MegaMatic until CONFIG.TOS sets them. I didn't make CONFIG.TOS too smart, so make sure that it and MegaMatic are on the same directory (they can be in a folder as long as both programs are in the same folder). Also, there is minimal error trapping done. Any errors will run through one of two routines, either the READ error routine or the WRITE error routine. If you make any mistakes or just want to quit CONFIG.TOS at any time, I put in a 'panic' key. Just press the ESC key at any time and you will be sent back to the desktop without anything happening. When you double-click on the CONFIG.TOS name, it'll automatically load in a file called MEGMATIC.PRG. MegaMatic HAS to be named this or CONFIG.TOS won't load it. Then CONFIG.TOS will check to make sure that the correct version of MegaMatic has been loaded. (This version is 1.1x. The last digit is not checked. It's just there to let me know which revision you have) Also, you CAN configure the same version of MegaMatic over and over again. The CONFIG.TOS automatically sets all the defaults back to zero when it's loaded into memory. You'll be asked a series of questions concerning how you want MegaMatic configured. If you've read the descriptions above, the questions are all pretty much self-explanatory (if you haven't, you should). After you answer each question, you'll then be prompted with a "Correct? es o". If you want to redo your answer, just press 'N' and CONFIG.TOS will take you back through the question so you can answer it again. A 'Y' will take you to the next question. If you later decide that you configured one of the earlier questions wrong, don't worry. Before CONFIG.TOS will write the MEGMATIC.PRG back out to disk, it'll ask you "Is everything correct? es o". At that point, you can press 'N' and you'll start all over again. Pressing 'Y' will write the modified MEGMATIC.PRG back to disk and take you back to the desktop. A special note. Do to CONFIG.TOS's limited intelligence, when you are entering the size for your ram disk, you'll have a choice of entering 2-32 (2*64k=128k ramdisk, 32*64k=2048k ramdisk). If you're entering a one digit number (2-9), you'll have to press RETURN when done. You don't have to press RETURN for a two digit number. Page -6- Final comments (or "it looks like we're almost done!") MegaMatic has been tested for several months with no noticeable bugs but there is no doubt in my mind, that someone out there is going to find one. If they do, let me know. Tell me how your system is configured, what AUTO programs you're running, what accessories that you're running and what happened when you had the problem. I'll try to test the problem out if possible (I don't have all the programs available for the ST though). The only two programs that I've had any problems with are: WORD PERFECT - This print spooler in this revision of Mega- Matic doesn't work with Word Perfect. I don't know why this happens since the print spooler works with everything else that's been tried with it. NEO-CHROME - You'll get some slight flicker at the bottom of the screen. They must be using some of the same interrupts that MegaMatic uses and the timing is slightly off. Remember, this is Share Ware. If you like it and use it, send TIF Software a donation (none too small, none too large). People that send donations will get upgraded to future versions free. (Future versions will NOT be Share Ware and will NOT be allowed to be freely distributed. Lloyd E. Johnson (programmer, reviewer and musician) Mat Ratcliff (programmer and reviewer for Analog) Dave Mumper (author of TINYVIEW/TINYSTUFF.....without who's help and code, I'd never got the keyboard reset routine done) and all the others who put out fine p/d software that I was able to get ideas from. Page -7- ADDENDUM to MegaMatic docs (or changes and fixes that have been added) Version 1.12 (11-24-87) - fix the 'out of memory bug that effected the ramdisk and spooler Version 1.13 (12-04-87) - fix the FREE RAM display Version 1.14 (12-17-87) - add a CLS before displaying text add making sure all floppy drives are off before exiting - this only effected non-Supra drives using the Supra software. add abort without installing MegaMatic. Pressing the SPACEBAR at the 'INPUT:' prompt will now abort the installation of any of MegaMatic's features. Version 1.15 (01-03-88) - Fix SPACEBAR input so it works even RAM-DISK is not selected. Fix bug that caused MegaMatic to show bombs (two) before returning to system. Version 1.17 (03-15-88) - Add on/off toggle for screen saver Correct improper programming that mis- handled the TRAP 1 vector. Mono and colour. Note: Does not work with SHADOW. If you have SHADOW or prefer to use another RAMDISK other than MEGAMATIC's then get MINIMATIC. A quick reminder, Super Boot is SHAREWARE and if you want to use Super Boot regularly please register your copy for $10.00. THESE FILES SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN YOUR .ARC FILE, AND WHEN UPLOADING TO OTHER BBS'S, PLEASE INCLUDE ALL OF THESE FILES: READTHIS.1ST STARTGEM.PRG STARTGEM.DOC SUPERBT.PRG SUPERCS.PRG SUPERCS.RSC SUPERBT.DOC To set up your boot disk, run SUPER_CS.PRG and it will create a new datafile called SUPERBT.STF. This file replaces the two files previously used, SUPERBT.PDC and SUPERBT.CFG, so you can delete those two files. Also, copy STARTGEM.PRG and the new SUPERBT.PRG to your AUTO folder. NEW FEATURES ADDED * There are now 30 function keys. The normal set of 10 is shown at the bottom of the screen in Super Boot. Holding down ALT shows another set of 10, and CONTROL shows yet another set (hold ALT or CONTROL while pressing the function key to select the other keys). If you hold down SHIFT while pressing a function key, the files will be set according to the function key, but Super Boot won't exit so you can temporarily modify one or two of the files. * Editing the function keys is now much easier, and the program pretty much is self explanetory on what you need to do. There are 2 new keys active when editing function keys, the DELETE and the INSERT key. * The password may now be visible or invisible. * Instead of only being able to use ALT as a bypass key, the key you use is now selectable and ALT, CONTROL, SHIFT, or CAPS LOCK may now be used. * Super Boot can also now be configured so that if a certain amount of time passes before a key is pressed, it will be bypassed. It can look for the keypress while showing the welcome screen, while in the file selection screen, or while in either screen. (When configuring this option, the best button to pick is BOTH). For the time delay option in the welcome screen, you must press a key before the # of seconds you specified to show the welcome screen runs out. For the file selection screen, you must press a key before the number of seconds you specified in #6 on page 5 of SUPER_CS.PRG runs out. * Auto programs can now be shown in their execution order in the directory instead of just in alphabetical order when using SUPERBT.PRG, since some programs have to run in a certain order. There is also an option in SUPER_CS.PRG to print a listing of AUTO files in their execution order to the screen or to a printer. * A Help Screen has been added with a summary of key commands and a display of some statistics like date, time, etc. (just press HELP while in the file selection screen). From the help screen you can also modify the date, time, write verify, or startgem program (explained later). * Monochrome users can now select a color scheme (white on black or black on white) and other monochrome color problems have now been fixed. * Support is now included for STARTGEM.PRG (Startgem is a program which autoboots a single GEM based program). Each function key can be programmed for a single GEM program to be autobooted, and there is also an "AUTO STARTGEM" feature which always boots a pre-selected GEM program (for example if you wanted Super Boot to always run NEODESK after you got to the desktop). The Function Key Startgem programs have a higher priority than the AUTO STARTGEM program so if a function key is hit, its startgem program will be booted instead of the auto startgem program. * A button is now included in SUPER_CS.PRG to print out a registration form to the printer or screen. * You can now have Super Boot set a Default Configuration if it is bypassed. It sets the configuration based on the configuration of function key F1. * The DELETE key is now active when using Super Boot. Pressing DELETE deselects all files in the file selection screen. * The previous data file size limit of 32128 bytes for other type files has been removed and files of any size are now usable. * Function keys can now have up to 40 files active at once instead of the previous limit of 20. * There is now a RANDOMIZER function available for the welcome screen. This option randomly selects a welcome screen instead of showing the same one each time. If you use this option, be sure to enter a search path instead of a filename for the picture (e.g. "C:\PICTURES\" instead of "C:\PICTURES\WELCOME.NEO"). * Absolute file paths are now supported when configuring OTHER type files. (e.g. a source path "E:\DATA\" is now supported instead of paths just limited to your boot drive like "\AUTO\"). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When you get a chance you probably do need to read through the manual to pick up a few things you might have overlooked.
