At thistime Croxton (XIV/3/2) requested which of tz}he 4 or +5 brigades he was to cap- P,K-ture. The fighting around Jay's mill was inconclusive with both sides sendingmz}ore troops toward the area. Liddell's division and XIV/1 ran into each other and neither reached those they wz}ere to have supported. During thefighting EctL-G.or was worried about his right flank and reported his concern to Forrestz}, who said he would take care of it. Later Ector was worried about his left flank. When informed, Forrest replied: "Byz} God, I am here and will take care of his left flH..ank as well as his right!" Forrest did (of course). bridge.xvCheatham's division had crossed the river early at Dalton's ford but did notreceive orders until 11AM. The orders ~} weren't worth the wait. Bragg had Cheat-ham march behind the Rebel line and thenattack through Walker's Corps. This was succ~}essful b+ut much time was lost P,K-marching. Meanwhile Rosecrans, since the woods blocked all vision, was f~}ollowing the battle by ear. XIV/4 and XXI/2 arrived in time to checkCheatham & meet the advance of Buck- ner's ~}Corps, XIV/4/3 fighting Cheatham in deep woodL-G.s. XXI/2 was attacked thriceby Wright while MTI regiments moved fromthe rea~ }r to Poe's field in near reserve.Hill's Corps made a maneuver similar to Cheatham's, marching around even more. As Bragg los~!}t time getting his army intoaction, the Union broughH..t up more reinforcements. rders |vBragg had ordered Buckner, who in turn ordered Stewart, to continue Cheatham's attack. This would have required moving#} NE then attacking west. Stewart ignored the orders and instead immediately at- tacked the center of the Union line. His $}brigades+ advanced with Clayton lead-P,K-ing, followed by Brown then Bate. This attack, around 2:30, achieved sensation-a%}l results, routing XXI/3. In desperation, one regiment of XIV/4/2 charged Stewart's advance and managed toconfus&}e it momentarily. As Bate's bri- gade pushed L-G.past La Fayette Road, (hex col. 13), and onward toward Dry Valley Road (h'}ex 8,19 to hex 1,16), the Union finally brought in the MTI regiments which inflicted devastating casualties in the open (}fields near the Viniard farm. Stewart's divisionH.. pulled back across La Fayette Road. movingvHaving found a weakness around Viniard farm, the Confederates continued the attack with Hood's Corps. Both Law's an*}dRobertson's divisions assaulted the Union right and quickly pushed west of La Fayette Road (col. 13). XX/1/3 was roll+}ed by Be+nning, Gregg, and McNair. P,K-Because of this continual pressure, expediency caused the right side of the U,}nion line to be mixed brigades from 3 corps. XX/1 and XX/3 held the line when Hood's attack began. XXI/1 counterat- tacked-} from the south, and again the ConfederatesL-G. retreated east of La Fay- ette Road. The fighting in the woods limited.} action to brigade level while the effect of the artillery caused saw- mills to refuse to accept trees from thebattlefield /}for decades afterward, (be- cause of their high metaH..l content). aw's anvLate in the day Cleburne's Division arrived on the far right to join Cheat- ham's renewing the attack on the Union 1} left. Thomas had personally adjusted theUnion deployment prior to this attack. XXI/2 and XIV/4 met part of the assault and 2}held, wh+ile XX/2 did poorly. XX/2/2 P,K-gave way so the rest of XX/2 was orderedto pull back. XX/2/1 did but XX/2/3 was u3}nable and attacked instead! This count-erattack pushed Deshler back and killed Gen. Preston Smith. However, the Union line w4}as quite jagged and straightening it later reqL-G.uired pulling back. The Con-federates attacked into the night with confuse5}d laggards shooting their own troops in the back. Much fire was high, irregularly pruning the trees. The Union had marched all day, were exhausted, andmost were cut off from fresh water. Man}ymen found only bloddy pools to drink from. The coldness of the night could not be offset by lighting fires. When Cleb}urne's m+en built fires to dry their P,K-wet clothes, (from crossing the river ina rush), the Union sent artillery shellso}ver as gifts. Hood's men, newly arrivedby train, did not have their camping gear and, more importantly, their artil-lery s}upport had not shown up either. Longstreet rL-G.eached the battlefield about11 PM and Bragg formed the army into twowings f}or the next day: Polk commanding the northern one and Longstreet the southern. The plan was for Polk to beginattacking at} dawn on the right, and suc-cessive brigades to joinH.. in from right to left down the line. er. ManvThe Union council of war at night felt that the battle would continue on the morrow. Immediately withdrawing to Chat}-tanooga was discussed but would have conceded defeat and might have disinteg-rated the army's cohesion. Furthermore, by s}imply ho+lding the field the second P,K-day, the North felt they would gain a victory and that Bragg would be compel- l}ed to retreat. Some advocated pulling the right wing back to Dry Valley Road to shorten the line. Thomas dozed thru most o}f the meeting and whenever proddedfor an opiniL-G.on said "strengthen the left." Final dispositions had Thomas coverin}g McDonald's Kelly's, and Poe's fields. Palmer, XXI/2, got no orders during the night, so Thomas provided them in the }morning. By dawn the Union had rested and most of tH..he line was fortified - especially Thomas' portion. to ChatvNegley (XIV/2) ordered to move north wasvery tardy in making the move, claiming he was waiting for XXI/1 to take his } place in line. Rosecrans then publicly chewed out Wood (XXI/1) for not being quick in obeying orders. This produced disa}ster lat+er. The South meanwhile P,K-could not get their attack started. Hillkept trying to find out what his orders w}ere, but couldn't locate Polk. Polk eventually gave orders directly to the division commanders, bypassing Hill. As the sc}heduled 6 AM attack had not occur-red by 9 AM,L-G. Bragg changed his orders tothat of a general offensive instead of apass al}ong attack from right to left. Even so, the Confederate attacks did notcommence until almost 10 AM. The Union made use of }this pause during daylight hours to shift more men H..to the north where they were soon to be needed. his vA seesaw battle north of the Union fort-ifications drew a call by Thomas for more reinforcements. Stovall and Adams } got around the Union left but were driven back by XIV/2 which ended up in open fields without entrenchments. Helm then} drove t+hem back but soon came to a P,K-bloody halt on the fortified line. Helm (Lincoln's brother-in-law) died in the a}ttack but his men were rallied by Forrest. XIV/3/3 was transferred north, preserving the Union left flank. These and ot}her fruitless, bloody attacks on the Union prL-G.epared positions rattled Rosecrans. Rosey sent a hasty order directl}y to Wood (XXI/1), who at 11 AM obeyed this bad order to shift his men north. Moving around XIV/3 to close up with XIV/4, }Wood left a gaping hole. Longstreet filled it witH..h 11,000 men: Hood, Stewart, Hindman, and Preston. Adams vGist and Liddell had initial success at-tacking the Union left flank but it was undone by the counterattacks of XIV/3/3} and XXI/2/3. These piecemeal attacks gained nothing directly though they did force the Union to commit reserves. It was }Longstre+et's attack with Stewart on P,K-the right, Hindman & Preston on the leftand a center of Johnson, Hood and McLaw t}hat was decisive. Stewart's orders camefrom Bragg and his premature attack on fortified XIV/3 was repulsed. The rest met li}ttle or no opposition. Hindman swept away XL-G.X/1 and XX/3, halting only when savaged by the MTI rifles. Johnson crossed} Wood's empty breastworks and hitXIV/3 and XXI/3 in flank. The latter wasmarching north in column when assaulted and the divi}sion disintegrated. Johnson held Villetoe while shatH..tered Union brigades reformed on Snodgrass Hill. XIV/3/3vHindman's successful attack removed XX/1first, then XX/3 from the field before Manigault was stopped by heavy firing } from the MTI regiments. Trigg and part of Preston's division reinforced Mani- gault. Parts of many Union brigades ral-lied} around +Snodgrass Hill in the time P,K-obtained by this MTI action farther south. Longstreet followed the advance p}ersonally and sent word to Bragg for more troops to exploit the success. Bragg replied that no men were at hand though} several fresh brigades were actu-ally availabL-G.le. The Union army HQ had been swept up in the rout, with Rose- crans n}ot stopping until he reached Chattanooga. From there he ordered Thomas to withdraw the remaining forces to Rossville} at dark. Despite the rout of half the army, ThomasH.. gathered enoughmen to extend his line to face south. iring vJ]K) ` MȍM Xf f))J#0ȱL=K0oiȱ LG `@ Ȣ} M1J L' )+ )@) i )𑘠 ) ) fLJ0LJMLF)OAO Y } Y`LtL𥫅HH f0N)Dȱ `!J!ȢJ M hh`񅫥 fЧhh}`MM ) : i7 h8 hB h`MM0IiA `L=K0oiȱ LG `@ ȢE({)'* 4(A &*'* ( c'*`&*0 [q (*Ņ! } g%L))p dpȑ󈱘 iȱiA )Ȯ'*} |)N*ipȥ'* )0L(L( (* c E*``[q ݥ0 8* 0 8*} 4 i H E*hФ80 e,- L4 F ` )e`Ņ! h({)) ` "+ f*)͵* f`*** ! ** f))͵* 䮷****ҭ*}L** \* *- +HȢh * * '* L*L * **A 0 * N }ι*⥪|)w** `L)* * *mgζ**莺***gm**gm `**eJ*eJ*}*ή*и**LP)*L( * η*η* \* ** * * `HL)* f % } `*x*s+ *** fϮ*L(**Р**` +8i`+ +̶} `+ +hi+ծhi+`++L`++ 888 8}ͮ+++п+t+++A 0 * N ί+⥪++`,- L4***ҭ*mAssistant Sec. of War Charles Dana (a civilian) ordered Wilder (MTI) to flee to Chattanooga but instead he stayed on} the battlefield and covered the retreat of the artillery and hospitals. Later, under Thomas' orders, his men held the sout}hern gap+s through the ridge. XIV/3 P,K-and XXI/1/3 formed on Snodgrass Hill facing south and were supported to the w}est by the Reserve Corps which had brushed aside Forrest to link up with Thomas. Ferocious ongoing assaults by the So}uth on Snodgrass Hill were repeat-edly turned L-G.back. This bloody hand-to- hand combat by Hindman, Johnson, et al exhaust}ed the troops, with only Preston still relatively fresh. After remaining quiescent for hours, Polk finally re- newed attack}s on the Union's left flank.Though battered and bentH.. into a horse- shoe shape, Thomas' line just held. ayed onvAt dusk, XIV/4/3 attacked north to clearthe exit road for Thomas' army. The withdrawal to McFarland's gap and thenc}eto Rossville did not go too badly with only a few regiments isolated and later captured. Bragg did not move forward un-til }the next+ day. In retrospect, the P,K-Union had many bad commanders and went into the second day of battle without a p}lan, only vague hopes and expectations.Negley (XIV/2) was disgraced at this battle and Rosecrans removed. Rosey's main f}ault was he let his attention be focused on tL-G.he early fighting by the left wing and was too active in shiftingtroops }north. This had worked on the first day when the river was between thearmies and Bragg (not Longstreet) di- rected the e}nemy corps. The resultant disaster was mitigated bH..y Thomas' firm stand as "the rock of Chickamauga." d thencv
