A.0 10/11/84I. OVERVIEW."DIGGERBONK" is a fa 6}st-moving single-player game for ages 6 and up. The object of the game is to find your way through a moving infinite maz 7}e without getting trapped or "bonked". At the same time, you must collect as many objects as you can, while avoiding the 8}enemies, bombs, and fighting your way through fog."DIGGERBONK" is played with a single joystick. It requires judgment, 9}skill, foresight, and strategy. It has nine levels of difficulty. The game keeps track of the highest score attained. :}II. REQUIRED COMPONENTS. DIGGERBONK program diskette 16K RAM One joystick controllerIII. LOADING THE PRO ;}GRAM.1. Remove any program cartridge from the cartridge slot(s) of your computer console.2. Plug an joystick controlle <}r into jack 1 in the front of your computer. Turn on your TV set (or other display device) and be sure to turn up the vo =}lume.3. You have the diskette version of DIGGERBONK:a. Turn your computer off.b. Turn on your disk drive. Use drive on >}e (D1) if you have more than one drive.c. Wait until the BUSY light on the drive goes out, then open the drive door ?} and insert the DIGGERBONK diskette into the drive with the label up in the right-hand corner nearest you.d. @}Turn on your computer. The program will load into computer memory and start automatically.IV. THE FIRST DISPLAY A} SCREEN.If the program was loaded properly, you will see the title "DIGGERBONK" at the top of the display followed by th B}e words "from ANTIC Magazine, The ATARI Resource" and a copyright notice. In a short period of time, another screen with C}a scrolling maze will come into view and you will notice a ticking sound. Adjust the volume of your TV set so that the t D}icking sound is not too loud. V. SELECTING DIFFICULTY / STARTINGDIGGERBONK has nine levels of difficulty. Level 1 is t E}he easiest, and level 9 is the hardest. With some practice, you will probably find that reaching 30,000 points is fairly F} easy on level 1, but very difficult on level 9. Before beginning play, you will see a number in the upper right-hand co G}rner of the screen that continuously increments from one to nine. To select the level of difficulty, you simply start the H} game (as described below) when the number equals the difficulty level you desire. There are two ways to begin play. Yo I}u may press the START key on the console, or you may press the red button on the joystick. A new maze will appear. It wi J}ll contain the object you control with your joystick (the little blue box - YOU).After you begin play, the score will K}appear in the upper center of the screen. The difficulty level will be displayed in the upper right-hand corner. During L}play, you may change the difficulty level by holding the SELECT key down.VI. HOW TO PLAY "DIGGERBONK".The object of t M}he game is to score as many points as you can before your inevitable demise. You can play to better your own best score, N}or you can play against an opponent by taking turns. The highest score will be kept by the game and displayed in the upp O}er-left portion of the screen. The high score is updated only after the end of each game.Points are scored by collecting P} various objects (described below). The game ends when you are trapped with no escape, when you are struck by bomb fragme Q}nts, or when an enemy strikes you when you are unprotected. To maneuver, you move the handle on the joystick controller. R} With the red button in the upper-left corner, the top of the joystick controller corresponds to moving up on the displa S}y device. At times during the game, a white mass will move across the screen from left to right. This is FOG. It is har T}mless, except that it is difficult to see where you are going while you are in it.The ORANGE WHIRLERS are always safe to U} approach. Bonk them, and you get 500 points. Fail to bonk them before they leave the screen, and you LOSE 505 points. V}So the difference between getting or not getting an ORANGE WHIRLER before it falls from view is 1005 points. But....when W} you bonk an ORANGE WHIRLER, your score begins to count down rapidly. You stop it by capturing.......The PULSING GREENI X}ES. Not only will capturing PULSING GREENIES stop your score from counting down, but they are worth 200 points (-202 if t Y}hey escape your capture). In addition, capturing one will give you special powers to bonk enemies for a short period. W Z}hile you have these powers, you glow brightly and become solid.TWINKLERS are worth 100 points if you capture them. You [}lose 101 points if you let them fall from view. For each TWINKLER you capture, you can knock your way through one wall. \}This could save your life, if you're trapped, for example. You can save up TWINKLERS (up to 255 of them), but you must k ]}eep track of how many you have left - don't get caught short! When you have the capability to break through walls, the wal ^}ls show up in sections, indicating where they can be broken. When you have no more TWINKLERS left to use, the walls beco _}me solid again. The BOMB is to be avoided. One thing is sure - it WILL explode! Don't get hit by the fragments. The BOMB `} can also be helpful at times. It may blast a short-cut or even save you from being trapped in a dead-end. However, it wo a}n't stop the enemies. The PURPLE GURPLE is one of three enemies you will encounter. Stay away unless you have been empow b}ered by a PULSING GREENIE to bonk the enemies. If you have been so empowered, bonk him. It's worth 1000 points (you are c} not penalized for failing to bonk any enemy). It is quite easy to pass the PURPLE GURPLE in a vertical hall because he d}usually takes one side and you can take the other. However, you can't pass him in a horizontal hall. The PURPLE GURPLE c e}hanges direction only when he hits something (you can hide in nooks to avoid him). He will not pass by an ORANGE WHIRLER, f} PULSING GREENIE, or TWINKLER, nor go through a wall. The YELLOW BLINKER is another enemy. Like the PURPLE GURPLE, he is g}worth 1000 points if you bonk him while you are empowered, and you are ... well, gone if he hits you when you are not emp h}owered. It is possible to pass him in a vertical hall if you are very careful. However, he changes direction frequently i}and often when you can't see him (he hides). He won't go through walls, ORANGE WHIRLERS, PULSING GREENIES, or TWINKLERS. j}The AQUA CHASER sounds an ominous beat. Consider this fair warning for he is very dangerous. He will chase you at time k}s, so stay away (unless you are empowered, then bonk him). He is worth 1500 points dead. You are worth nothing if he gets l} you. He can pass through ORANGE WHIRLERS, PULSING GREENIES, and TWINKLERS to get you. Hope that you have a TWINKLER sav m}ed up if he catches you in a dead-end. Or, you can press .....The PANIC BUTTON. The red button on the joystick controll n}er is actually a panic button. You can use it in desperate situations, but only once for each AQUA CHASER you bonk. It's o} use costs you 2500 points and you must have a positive score to use it. To use the PANIC BUTTON, first press and hold th p}e button, then knock out the wall of your choice by crashing into it. You are allowed one free use of the panic button at q} the beginning of the game (but your score must be positive to use it).You will hear a "thud" when you hit a WALL. Each r} time you hit a wall, it costs you one point unless you have a TWINKLER saved up.The WRAPAROUND FEATURE allows you to kn s}ock your way through a wall on one side of the maze and come in on the other side. You must be able to break into the oth t}er side, however. This means that you must either have a TWINKLER saved up, or be able to use the panic button to break ba u}ck in on the other side. While you are outside the maze, you cannot move vertically. If you come close to the bottom of v}the maze, the SINK HOLE will appear beneath you and an audible warning will sound. If you fall into the SINK HOLE, the g w}ame is over.VII. FREEZING/RESTARTING/REPLAYINGAt any time during play, you may press the SPACE BAR to suspend the gam x}e. While the game is in a frozen state, the background will be dark blue. To continue play, press the SPACE BAR again. y}There will be a one-half second pause before the game resumes. You may restart the game at any time by pressing START.Y z}ou may replay the game after you are bonked by pressing START or bypressing the red button on the joystick controller.Pr {}essing OPTION at any time will return you to the title page (after which you may press START or the red button to select a |} new difficulty level and begin play).During game play, SELECT may be pressed to change the difficulty level. Press and }} hold SELECT to toggle the difficulty level. The level will wrap around to 1 after 9.SYSTEM RESET may be pressed to re ~}initialize the game. The high score will be erased and the game will return to the copyright screen. After being bonked, } if no keys are pressed for one minute, the game will automatically return to the original copyright screen. The high sc }ore will not be lost, however. When you begin a new game, the high score will again be displayed.VIII. DIGGERBONK QUIC }K REFERENCE.FOG - Harmless.ORANGE WHIRLERS - 500 points.
