It says: "Beware of the Ankh!"Thou hast successfully climbed the tree! Before thou even gets the chance to look around, thy attention is imediately taken by a spectacular golden box resting in the branches. Thou dost open the box to find a beautiful sparkling gem that appears that it may be magical. Thou dost put the gem into thy pack and then dost look around...Halfway up the tree, thou hast lost thy balance and hast fallen to the ground! Thou hast not been too wouGnded this time, but thou should be more careful next time! The view up here is spectacular! This must be one of the tallest trees in all of the forest. Thou can see for miles upon miles. To the south, thou sees the infamously dangerous swamplands of Zenobia, and to the imediate northwest can be seen the pathway back to the city.Thou hast grown bored of the splendor of the fore$st and so returns to the ground... T Y DUNGEON Y 9:Upon entering the city gates, thou art greeted by a group of townfolk. They see that thou art carrying the beautiful princess on thy shoulders. Several cheers and congratulations art heard, as thou sees a man making his way through the crowd. He tells thee that he is married to the princess and says that thou art a hero! Áǂ ~ǁGw~Ggwǟ000 6 GGGGGGGf/The World of Zenobia is an incrediblylarge online universe of adventure anddiscovery. It is unique in the telecomworld in that it provides an unmatchedlevel of complexity and variety to itscitizens. It is not so much "played"as it is experienced. Zenobia hascrossed the boundaries of being merelya game, venturing into a land withmonsters, magic, and damsels indistress - a world in which only quickwits, the strength of your sword arm,and strange magical powers may separateyou from a king's treasure or the clawsof a fierce beast.Zenobia allows you to venture into anessentially unknown land with only thehelp of yourG alter ego - a character athome in a world of demons and darkness, dragons and dwarves. You will be ableto see with the eyes of your charactera scene existing in the mind of theworld's creator, and, generally, in theimaginations of your fellow players. As you set off in a quest of fame andfortune, you are both a character inand a reader of an epic you are helpingto create. Your character will dowhatever you wish him to do, subject tohis human (or near-human) capabilitiesand vagaries of chance. Fight, flee,or parley; take the high road or low;the choice will be yours.Zenobia may (and most likely will)become, for both you and yourcharacter, a way of life. Yourcharacter does not stop existing at theend of a game session; normally, youuse the same character again and againuntil he dies a final death and cannotbe brought back to life by even themagical means typically available. Inthe meantime, he will have grown richeron the treasure he has accumulated fromhis journeys, may have purchased newand better equipment, won magicalitems, or found protective devices tokeep him safe. As he gains experiencefrom his adventures, he will grow inpower, strength, and skill. The World of Zenobia is a detailedfantasy world provided for you (andyour character) to explore. It is aland colored by myth and legend, populated by brave heroes, skilledswordsmen, skulking thieves, cunningwizards, and comely wenches, and filledwith cursed treasures, spell-forgedblades, rings of power, loathsomebeasts, dark forests, and a dungeonthat stretches into the bowels ofHell.Zenobia is not just a game, but anexperience - for within the boundariesof the World, you may fight mythicalbeasts, use magical items, rescue fairmaidens, battle other citizens, protectyour honor on the jousting fields, seekpleasure at the brothel, explore theforsaken swamplands, solve perplexingpuzzles, overcome the legions of thelost, slay a nine-headed pyrohydra, cross a firey pit, endure a cold thatnumbs the soul, or face Death itself. And live.R GAll but a few of the files for Zenobiaare found in the ZEN> directory whichis to be set up as described in thefile covering the installation of thegame. To do so is as simple as a copyfrom ZEN>*.SYS to your backup drive.n !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPThe World of Zenobia is easily the mosthighly-detailed, complex, and involvedonline adventure ever developed for ahome computer-based BBS. The systemsinvolved in the inner workings ofZenobia, while simpler than some, areas accurate as any and far moreauthentic than most. What does allthis involve? Well, as with anythingso complex, Zenobia takes up a lot ofroom. Programmers Sig here....(ACE)The Shadow _]' Krishna Lou Trapani ATASCII screens Sig List.... ŭ ٠ Glenn, Where do you find the time? What is y order to run Zenobia on yourcomputer, you must be running theCarina II bulletin board system andhave at least 300k free on a singledrive (whether it be a hard drive or aRAMdisk). Because the drive isaccessed so often and there are so manyprogram modules, the ideal home forZenobia is on the RAMdisk of a 1-MegMIO or a highly-expanded XL/XE.Zenobia also requires BASIC-XL orBASIC-XE.What to do first&-You must first decide how you want topresent Zenobia to your users. Zenobiais run from its own directory. Thismakes it flexible enough to be usedfrom absolutely any SIG - or evenmultiple SIGs as long as the MAIN.BASloader file is in each SIG.Since Zenobia will become so popular,it is probably a good idea just tocreate its own SIG. A file transferarea is not needed, though you may wantto include a message base to allow fordiscussions about game strategie;s,questions, challenges, etc.Making a home for ZenobiaT-If you plan on creating a Zenobia SIG,then you must first enter the Ext-Sysmodule of your system. From the menu, access option "S" to "Create/Edit asection" and add a G"The World ofZenobia" SIG as you would add any otherSIG. As noted earlier, a SubProgram(Games) section is all that is needed+,though a message base is probablydesirable as well. Note down the drivenumber where you placed the MODSEC_?>folder.At this point you'll have alreadydecided from which SIG Zenobia is goingto be used. (Either its own or someother) You will now need to find theprogram called MAIN.BAS (Found in theroot directory of Disk #1 on yourZenobia disks). Now go to DOS and COPYMAIN.BAS to the MODSEC_?> folder of theSIG where Zenobia will be used. Thisis the program that CARINA II will runfirst to enter a user into Zenobia. Ifyou want Zenobia to run from a gamesmenu, rename MAIN.BAS to something elseand consult your CARINA II manual onhow to make the menu use it.Now you must decide which drive youwant to put the actual game files ofZenobia. It doesn't have to be thesame drive number as the MODSEC_?> fileyou created. This is very desirable ifyou've decided to use Zenobia from asection that already eats a lot of diskspace. It's now time to create the actual homefor Zenobia. To do this, all you needto do is go to DOS and create a ZEN>folder on the drive number whereZenobia is to reside.Let's assume that you want to placeZenobia on drive number 4. From theSpartaDOS D1: prompt, you would type: D4: CREDIR ZEN>And that's allU there is to it! Youhave just made a home for Zenobia tolive.Copying the filesf-Your first step is to go through eachside of your Zenobia disks and copyeverything from the ZEN> directoriesfound on them to the one you justcreated on your BBS. Start with Side 1- Disk #1, then go to Side 2 - Disk #1,then Side 1 - Disk #2, and so on untilyou are sure that you got all the filesto their new home. If Zenobia is tosit on a RAMdisk, then you must find aspot on your hard drive to create abackup ZEN> directory and then copy allfiles to that directory too! After you do this, you have one morefile to copy. It's called GATEWAY2 andis found on the root directory of Side1 of Disk #1. Copy this file to yoursystem's MODULE> folder. (If MODULE>resides on a RAMdisk, don't forget tocopy it to the hard drive where itshlould be backed up!)ENTERing new chanCges-In order for Zenobia to run properly, afew additions to your system's GATEWAYfile were needed and a s=eperate file,GATEWAY2, added. GATEWAY2 checks eachuser to see if they are a new user, andif so, deletes any Zenobia characterthat the previous holder of that BBSaccount number may have had.The changes to GATEWAY are simple; inaddition to telling it to run GATEWAY2when it is finished, only one line isadded:20 Poke 760,Asc("1"):Poke 705,C0Memory location 760 contains theATASCII value of the drive number wherethe ZEN> game directory is to reside. The default line of code (as shownabove) has this set as drive #1. Youmust change the value to the drivewhere you placed your ZEN> folder. For example, if you put your ZEN>folder on D4: then you would changeline 20 above to:20 Poke 760,Asc("4"):Poke 705,C0Memory location 705 is used to tellZenobia if the user online has enteredthe game yet on that login and must bereset before all new callers. To add the changes to your currentGATEWAY program, you must go into BASICand load that program. Assuming it ison D1: you do this by typing:LOAD "D1:MODULE>GATEWAY"After this is done, find the file onthe root directory of Zenobia Disk #1 -Side 1 called GATEWAY.ADD. Once youfind this, merge it with your GATEWAYprogram by typing this from BASIC(Where 'x' is the drive number wherethe file resides):ENTER "Dx:GATEWAY.ADD"After you've done this, make thenecessary changes to LINE 20 of theprogram (as described above) andre-SAVE GATEWAY to your MODULE> folderby typing (again, assuming it is ondrive one):SAVE "D1:MODULE>GATEWAY"If yozur MODULE> folder sits on aRAMdisk then remember to back it up tothe hard drive at this point!Initializing the World--Now that you have completed the set-upof the game (whew!) you are ready toget things started! From basic, youmust RUN ZEN>SYSMOD to enter the sysopmodule of Zenobia. (Consult the fileon sysop commands for help).Select option 'I' to 'Initialize theworld.' After answeing 'yes' to makesure you want to do this, your newworld is created!Testing out the World-You must log on to your BBS normally inorder to test out Zenobia. If youdon't do this, then the sGystem will notknow where to look for the ZEN>directory, not to mention not knowingwho you are, etc.Log on as you normally wOould and thengo to the games section in the SIGwhere Zenobia is and you'll be taken ona journey to your new World. That's ith! You're done. You can nowread the online help files and get anidea of what Zenobia is all about.ǐRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~The Zenobia sysop module (sysmod)contains several sysop utilities, including both the user and computerfighter editor. To enter sysmod, alocal sysop simply needs to run theprogram via Basic or the Carina Syscommodule, or can enter Zenobia normallyand hit the SELECT key at any prompt.Sysmod may also be activated by anyuser who has Sysop access to the EmailSIG on your bbs. Remote sysops simplyneed to hit a carret ("^") at virtuallyany main menu prompt in any module.Combat modules don't support thisfunction, as to prevent sysops fromtrying to cheat by leaving a fightprematurely.Once in sysmod, you will be presentedwith a menu of choices: [E] Examine citizens [F] Find a user [S] Scan citizens [V] View computer fighters [A] Add a computer fighter [C] Compact fighter file [I] Initialize World [G] Go to a module [R] Return to City [Q] Quit to BBSLSet's take a look at these options oneby one as they're listed.Examine citizensc-This will easily be most common commandthat you will use of all the ones insysmod. It allows you to edit andmodify virtually every aspect of auser's citizen. Note that the editingcommands here are exactly like thosefor editing computer fighters(explained later).Upon selecting the command, you will beprompted for the citizen name or numberthat you wish to examine. Whenediting players or computer fighters,DO NOT exceed these values or errorswill occur within certain modules. Forexample, do not give a player a weapongreater than #20, for there is no suchweapon. Likewise, there are only 6Gods, so do not place a value higherthan 6 for that item. Sysmod Does Notcheck for these limits.Special Note: Item #4, Status, shouldnot be changed in most cases. It is anǛindication of the user's currentstatus. (0=Alive in City, 255=Lodged,254=Dead, other = Foresting or inDungeon) This item sGhould only bechanged if a 0, 254, or a 255 isdisplayed, and should only be changedto a 0, 254, or a 255.Pocket gold and bansk gold may notexceed 16 million gold pieces each.(I think that is a limit easily livedwith). Experience may not exceed64,000, and all the other items may notexceed 255 (except where other limitshave been noted). For example, aplayer may not carry more than 255torches at any one given time. You are given many more choices thanjust changing the value in each item. Here is a list of your options from thecommand prompt:Hitting RETURN during the display of acitizen's stats or at the commandprompt quickly skips to the nextrecord.[A] Show user Again : Re-display userstats.[S] Save status to disk : You must usethis option to save any changes made, otherwise they will not be saved uponexiting or going to other users. Foradded security, you may make it so thata user must type a password to executethis, and some other sysop comands.Place any password you'd like in a filecalled PASSWORD.DAT and put it in yourZEN> game directory. You can createthe file with the Carina text editor.[Q] Quit user edit : Return to userprompt.[K] Kill (Delete) user : Delete aplayer from the Zenobia password file.[!] Revive (Undelete) user : Undeletesa citizen. DO NOT use this functionfor users that have been deleted due totheir bbs account being deleted![B] Blacklist user : Use this functionto keep unwanted or abusive players outof the game.[+] Go to next user : Skip ahead inpassword file (Ex. +10)[-] Previous user : Skip back inpassword file (Ex. -3)[#] Go to User # : Go to a specificuser. (Example, type: #10 to go touser #10)[P] Program fighting style : Selectingthis option gives a sub-menu with thedifferent programming options that maybe changed. Consult the Arena modulefor descriptions. Note two additionalones: Attack (0=Ignore users when theysee you in the dungeon/forest, 1=Attackthem upon entering the room) and Style(0=Cautious, 1=Defensive, 2=Aggressive,3=Reckless and Daring)[I] Edit special Items : A list ofspecial items is displayed afterchoosing this option. Each item isfollowed by a "yes" or "no" indicatingif the user is carrying it or not.[M] Edit Mercenary info : This optionalGlows you to view/edit the number ofthe mercenary that is waiting for auser and the number of the citizen thatsent it. A zero (0) indicates nomercenary is waiting. Note that if youplan to edit this, do not put innumbers of mercenaries or citizens thAatdo not exist! This will surely causeproblems.Find a UserL-There will be times when you will wishto examine a certain user's citizen butwill only know his bbs handle and notthe citizen name. If this happens, youuse this option and sixmply enter thebbs handle or account number and sysmodwill quickly find his Zenobia characterfor you.Scan Citizens--Select this option to quickly show acitizen-scan complete with eachcitizen's current status.View Computer Fighters---The options available under thiscommand are exactly as those under theuser edit command, though the editingis for the Computer Fighter/Mercenarypassword file. Please note that thereshould be NO deleted fighters in thisfile. If you wish to get rid of afighter, delete him normally and thencompact the file. The fighters in this file are both usedas outsiders (computer fighters) andmercenaries. The price they hold intheir 'pocket' is what will be won fromthem if they lose a fight. The pricethey have in their 'bank' is what theycost to hire as a mercenary. Note thatplayers with less than 420 gold (theprice of the current cheapestmercenary) are not normally allowedinto the mercenary shop. Mercenariesare meant to be foQr high-level citizensto use against other high-levelcitizens, and so should be costlyenough so that normal playes cannotaffo"rd them.Add a Computer Fighter8-This option allows you to add anoutsider to the fighter/mercenary statǛfile. There are 40 mercenariespre-defined for you when you purchasedthis program. There can only be 255fighters in the file.Compact Fighter file.-As noted before, there CAN NOT bedeleted fighters, for they will only beignoredE and treated as if they weren'tdeleted. If you want to rid yourselfof fighters in the file, delete themnormally, then use th/is option compactthe file.Initialize World?-This is what you will use when settingup or resetting up Zenobiga. Thisoption deletes all the necessary filesand re-creates starter files for you.Go to a Moduleu-Use this oHption to return to anyZenobia module.Return to City and Quit to BBSf-Use these options when yo-u're finishedwith sysmod and wish to exit. This file contains inside informationthat you, as the sysop and game masterof Zenobia, may like to know. Some ofit, specifically about items, shouldnot be given to users. It is much morefun to allow them to find it out bythemselves.Questions Ask ed by Users$-There will certainly be users askingquestions about the functions ofcertain things in Zenobia. Hopefullythis file will give you enough answersto cover them. Most of them are likelyto concern the purpose and location ofcertain items. Zenobia was designed tobe an adventure in exploration. One ofthe most enjoyable aspects of the gamewill be the discovery of new andintriguing objects and then findingways to use them. Though it is yourresponsibility to give players thisopportunity, you will also need enoughinformation to at least give hints tosome of the more perplexing things inZhenobia - or to describe something thatsimply should be known by all.Ways of Getting Yourself Healed--One of the main concerns with life inZenobia is getting yourself healedafter being wounded or fatigued. Thereare several ways of doing this.Within the Emporium can be found ahealshop with salves, nectars, elixersand several potions. Salves, nectars, and elixers are carried with player'sas they explore and may be drunk orapplied (as the case may be) whenneeded. GSalves and elixers are meantfor wounds, and nectar for fatigue. The other potions found in the healshopare to be drunk upon being purchased.Their effects are immediate. Detailsof what potion does what must belearned by each adventurer (and in manycases, the effects are determined by aplayer's stats)The Pub contains several means ofhealing yourself. There is HealingWheel (a means of gambling for healingsupplies) as well as quite a number ofother methods that must be foundthrough discovery. The Pub-There is an important thing found inthe pub that may be overlooked as beingunimportant. User's are able to talkto computer-characters that hang out inthe pub. These characters areextremely important to many parts ofZenobia. Some of them will sell youthings, give you valuable information,or just give you small talk. Note thatthere are more than a dozen peoplefound in the pub and not all of themwill be present at once. You may needto go in and look for a certain personon sev;eral different occasions to findthem.Item DescriptionsL-Here's a brief summary of some itemsthat may be found in Zenobia:Keys and lockpicks : There will, at onepoint or another, be locked doors thatmust be crossed to continue with ajourney. The keys in Zenobia fitalmost all locks, but are limited toone use. If a key fits a lock, it willalways open it. Lockpicks are quite abit cheaper than keys, but do notalways work. A player's dexteritydetermines the effectiveness of apick.Stable Keys : There is a special lockfound on the stable door that even thekeys won't open. A specially made keymust be found to be allowed into thestables.Leather Pouches : You'll find itnecessary to have a pouch to be able tocarry some items with you.Darts and Blowguns : Poison darts are arather effective weapon in that they, once embedded into an opponent, drain aplayer's fatigue. The amount of damagedone each turn is determined by thatplayer's stats (the more endurance hehas the less he'll tire) and by thenumber of darts that are embedded atone time (obviously, having four dartsin you will do more damage than justone!) Trying to hit an opponent bythrowing a dart at him will not yieldas good results as shooting it from abloGwgun, which has a greater chance ofhitting.Torches and Lanterns : Being in thedark is always a dangerous situation. You may trip over a great number oftraps, get lost, and may not find thetreasure that you might find withlight. Lanterns generally last asubstantially amount of time longerthan a torch, which burns out ratherquickly.Trap Disarmers : A good supply ofdisarmers is always nice to have. Aplayer's ability to use a disarmer isdependant on his dexterity. Disarmershave one use each before they break.Monster Repellent : Easily the mostimportant thing to carry in the forest, the repellent vials will drive away allbut the nastiest of beasts. Simplythrowing the vial at a creature usuallydoes the trick.Shovels : It's always a good idea tobring a shovel along with you if youplan to dig for items or treasure.Shovels will substantially increase aplayer's chances to find something.(Though the attribute of intuition isstill the single most important thingdetermining if something will or willnot be found)Treasures : Any treasures that acitizen finds can be sold in the Guild(as can many other items). The priceof many things sold to the Guildmastercan be negotiated. Once you find atreasure, you cannot find it again.(Unless you reset your character, ofcourse)Magic Ring (Ring of Protection) : TheRing of Protection gives, to the onewho wears it, a magical protection fromwounds. It may, depending on themagical ability of the citizen, keepthe player safe from up to half of whathe would normally sustain from a hit.Magic Gem : The Gem brings specialmagical qualities to the one who holdsit. In addition to that, it alsoincreases magical ability.Deathshield : There is a rather nastyspell in the World called 'InstantǛDeath' that will cause an opponent tocollapse to death immediately uponcasting it. Without a Deathshield, there is no defense against this spell(aside from hope that it will fail!). The Deathshield makes this spellvirtually useless.Player Limits and Restrictions/-Because of the popularity of Zenobia,it was found that several limits had tobe imposed on players to prevent themfrom exploiting the game, as well asother users. Most notably, users are only allowed toeGnter the World of Zenobia twice perday (reset at midnight of each day).Any attempt to enter more than thatwill result in being kicked right backout. As a sysop, you can simply runZEN>CITY right after being kicked out. This will allow you to enter more thantwo times per day if you wish.Players also face several restrictionsduring their current call. They areonly allowed to fight once per call andjoust three (3) times per call. Inaddition to this, there are severalcounters that are kept for certainother things. It has been found that because of thecall-limits, users would simply logoutnormally and call right back to get inthe rest of their daily limits. Thisis not possible now, as a player is notallowed to enter Zenobia again untilanother player has been given thechance to enter.Every effort has been made to make thebenefits of having multiple accounts asminimal as possible. It is stilladvantages to have a second characterthat your main character can exploitand mooch off of. T{here's not muchthat can be said about this, except towarn you to look out for multiples.Hang-Ups and Dropped Carriers--Because of the way MOE II is designed,it is impossible for a program todetect dropped carrier and then dosomething about it. (Like clean upthings and save current stats) This isdue to the fact that MOE II doesn'tgive the program a chance to notice itbefore it drops into basic and runsWAITCALL. This simple quirk in thedesign of the BBS would normally letusers get away with murder! Zenobia isa little smarter than most, however, inthat it takes care of it this problemin the most critical areas: duringfights, foresting, and dungeoning. Ifa user hangs up while in a fight, inthe dungeon, or in the forest, theywill be surprised when they decide tologin next. Zenobia saved their statsas they were AND noted that they xhungup on the system. They will then pay ahefty penalty for hanging up on thesystem (a rude behavior at any time).FC &#+ ###J R### ###W kThe World of Zenobiaq y### ### G### ### Copyright 1987-1988 Katt-Ware ### ###f k### ##The World of Zenobia represents a greatnumber of hours of work and testing. The resulting product is theculmination of countless additions andmodifications to a basic design. Originally, Zenobia was to be a singleplayer RPG-type game consisting of onlytwo or three modules. It has grown toan incredible size, and is not likelyto stop for awhile; for Zenobia isnever-ending and ever-expanding. Updates, mods, additions, and even newmodules are likely to be released at alater date. They will be offered toZenobia owners for the cost of thedisks and shipping, in addition to asmall additional cost (Most likely for only $5). New fighting arenas, interactive user competitions, morecities, and possibly even a networkedZenobia World (for adventuresconsisting of citizens from across thenation!) may all be released toregistered Zenobia purchasers soon. Smaller additions, bug fixes, corrections, or adjustments will bemade available for download on the WestCoast Syndicate (mentioned later) aswell as other Carina II boards thatchoose to carry them. All Zenobia disks are unprotected foryour convenience; however, I ask thatyou respect this and not pirate it. Each copy of Zenobia is encoded with aunique serial number that can be viewedonline and traced back to the originalowner.Several bigger and better projects foruse with the Carina II bulletin boardare in the planning and/or developmentstages. I will simply not be able tocomplete them if Zenobia is going to bepirated. There are very few peopleproducing high-quality software for the8-bit Atari (or, specifically forCarina II) these days. rPlease respectmy copyright and allow me to continueto support this computer and even offerupdates to Zenobia. -Zenobia was never meant to be user-expandable. In fact, it has beenpurposely avoided. It was my intentionto keep my work in its original state.Zenobia is being sold as a completeworld as it is. Hopefully, it willcontinue to be as it was cC reated. -As to avoid conflict with otherprograms that you may want to useonline, you will have to know thatZenobia uses some key memory locationsthat can not be changed or modified byother modules.Location 760 is reserved for Zenobiato store the drive number where theZEN> folder resides. This locationis reset upon a system reset - whichmeans that you will have to login tothe BBS again or re-poke this locationafter a Reset.Locations 704-708 are used and are notto be touched by other programs. Theyare mostly used as internal countersfor the current user online. Thesememory locations are theo color registerlocations for player/missle graphicsand are unlikely to be used by otherCarina II programs.~ ---As mentioned earlier, The West CoastSyndicate will be used as a supportsystem for Zenobia. There is currentlya Zenobia SIG set up for discussionsabout the adventure. Minor fixes, adjustments, and changes will beavailable for download. I will be sureto call WCS frequently as to answer anyquestions or respond to any comments. The number to WCS is: 415-825-2952 andis/ accessable via the CAOAK node of PCPursuit.> >D-Speaking of The West Coast Syndicate, let me extend my thanks to Bill Brown, the sysop of WCS. He has not onlyallowed me to use WCS as the launch padand first site for Zenobia, but hasstuck through its countless revisionsand modifications. Zenobia has evolvedfrom a simple game running with Carina1 to an extremely detailed worldcontinually developing under the CarinaII bulletin board system. Bill Brownwas there throughout every stage ofZenobia and has offered numeroussuggestions and ideas. Thank you,Bill.Special thanks are offered to JeremyHuie, `John Wallace, and Tim Tait fortheir extensive play-testing,bug-hunting, and wonderful ideas. F1d APA67=1AAE@IWCA@[cP;@0g,c6. It's full of mystery and unthinkable horrors. As thou enters, a sudden sense of forboding overcomes thee. The deeper thou enters, the more the light fades. It eventually shrivels into a dim irradescence just bright enough to light the way. There's a heaviness in the air. It's quite still, as if having never been disturbed in countless ages. It reeks of decaying plant life which has accumulated over the years. As thou looks up to see the tops of the trees, thou notices a fine mist settling to the ground. Thou suddenly becomes cold and a chill runs over thee. It's not a shivering sensation of a cold night, but a chill one feels when one senses danger. When thou turns to retrace thy steps, thou finds thy way suddenly blocked by an impossible thicket of briars. As thou stands not knowing which way to go, the irradescent light suddenly turns to an utter darkness; tangible and all-encompassing. Thou realizes now that thou art at the mercy of the forest.Behemoth: This huge four-legged sauroid lacks the wings and firey breath of a true dragon but is even bigger. Although slow and clumsy, it is extrememely powerful, and its scaley hide is tough.Brontotaur: This huge beast is the greatest of the mutant tauroids. It's fifteen-foot height and ground-shaking mass deserve the name, "Thunder Bull." Although slow moving, the mighty beast is well protected by its thick, hairy hide.Criotaur: With its manlike legs, arms, and torso and ram's head, this mutant beast is not properly a "bull" at all, but is no less dangerous than the other tauroids. The curled horns can weigh as much as two hundred pounds and are capable of delivering prodigious blows.Demon: TGhe spirit of evil in the form of a giant with a muscular torso, bat wings, horns, a tail, and pupilless red eyes- The ruler of the Netherworld.Elasmotaur: The bull head of this beast rests upon a distended but strong neck. Its reach and exceptional quickness, which make it difficult to strike, make it a very dangerous foe.Fiend: A demon of the Netherworld, in form like unto its ruler, but lesser in power and aspect.Firedrake: The true dragon, fast as the wind and fierce as a typhoon, with all the powers of legend. Its firey breath and steel claws will tear apart an inadequately protected adventurer.Gargoyle: A magically animatEed statue, winged, fanged, and clawed, with a leering mouth and misshapen body. Its heavy, stony form makes it the slowest of winged creatures but almost invulnerable to all but the most powerful of blows.Ghoul: Although not truly of the undead, this fearsome creature is attracted to the dead and dying. It has long, extraordinarily powerful arms, wicked claws, and razor-sharp fangs that rend the bones of the victim and enable the ghoul to get at the marrow within. Giant Bee: A bee two to three feet in length, patterned and colored like its smaller cousin. It is rather slow and soft-bodied but possesses a venomous sting.Giant Centipede: This brown insect is about six feet long and is covered with a tough but flexible shell. It is quick and dangerous, and its mandibles are covered with an irritating toxin.Giant Earwig: This repulsive creature is brown or black and a yard long, although its pincers add another foot to its length. It is usually found under large objects or in other dark places.Giant Mantis: This menacing creature is pale green and may exceed five feet in length. Its mandibles are strong and its forelegs razor sharp and lined with hooks on the interior edges to hold prey fast. Altogether, a potent attacker!Giant Mosquito: This slender, fast-moving insect has a four-foot long wingspan. Its bite can be painful, but it is more annoying than dangerous to a healthy, armored adventurer.Giant Rat: This rodent is the size of a large dog, and its correspondingly nasty incisors are capable of biting through most armor. It is dirty and reeks of a musky odor.Giant Red Ant: This is perhaps the most formidable of all insects in the forest. It is somewhat larger than its black cousin, and its carapace is considerably harder. It is surprisingly quick, and its great pincer jaws are capable of biting a person in two!Giant Snail: This huge mollusk is slothful and very slow. Although easy to evade, its armored shell makes it hard to kill, and a careless adventurer could be crushed beneath it.Giant Spider: This great arachnid resembles a black tarantula grown to more than man-size. Although somewhat clumsy, the spider has pGowerful mandibles and a potent venom.Giant Wasp: Slimmer, faster, and more elusive than the giant bee, the wasp possesses an equally nasty stinger.Gynotaur: The female minotaur is smaller but quicker than her male counterpart and only slightly less dangerous.Imp: A minor demon or fiend, smaller than a man and dangerous only because of the flaming spear it bears.Lost Soul: Among the least of the legion of the damned, this disembodied spirit is not powerful but extremely elusive.Minotaur: This legendary beast, half man half bull, is renowned for its ferocity and strength. Although its head is that of a bull, giving it sharp horns that are even more formidable than the claws at the end of its powerful arms, it is carnivorous. Mummy: This is the embalmed and enwrapped body of someone long dead. Although it is fragile and slow, its claws and teeth transmit a rotting, leprous blight that effects a victim with supernatural speed.Pyrohound: A large, shaggy hound, coal black in color, with red feral eyes, gleaming fangs, and a quickness that belies its size.
