It will generate a list of words an!}d page numbers from a word list and a source document.1.CREATING THE INPUT FILESBefore running INDEX.COM you must cre!}ate the two files that it needs to generate an index. The first file is the INDEXWORDFILE. It contains a list of the word!}s to be indexed, one word per line with a CR after each. For instance, if you want to index the words 'the', 'and', 'to' and!} 'from' the INDEXWORDFILE would look like this:20theandtofrom10The words can be in either upper or lower case, si!}nce INDEX.COM ignores case. It converts all words in the index word list and the source document into lower case when runnin!}g. (You can create the INDEXWORDFILE using PaperClip, just press RETURN after each word.)The second file you need is th!}e SOURCEFILE. To generate this file, load the document you wish to index into PaperClip. You must add a special header com!}mand to the file, so that INDEX.COM will know what page it is reading. On the VERY FIRST line of your source document type:!}nj20CTRL-ZH>PAGENUMBER< CTRL-N10Be sure to use UPPER CASE when typing this. And don't leave out the space between the '' and the '<'.)This tells PaperClip to print a header on the first !}line of each page. Be sure to use header numbers 2 or 3 for any other headers you have defined in your document. (Also make!} sure that they print on a different line than this header.)Next press CTRL-SHIFT-O (the start output command). When the p!}rompt "Print device? P:" prompt appears type "D:filename.ext" (where filename.ext is the filename you wish to write t!}o). Be sure not to use the same name as the original copy of the document. Next you will be prompted "Send control codes? Yes". Press 'N' then RETURN. (INDEX.COM will do strange things if you send printer control codes to it.) Just press R!}ETURN for the rest of the prompts. PaperClip will now "PRINT" the file to the disk file you told it. This is is the SOURCE!}FILE that INDEX.COM needs.2.RUNNING INDEX.COMNow you are ready to run INDEX.COM. To do this load your copy of Atari!}G DOS (or DOSXL, or other Atari compatible DOS). (If you are using an 800XL or 130XE hold down OPTION when booting DOS. This!} will remove the BASIC ROM and give INDEX.COM 8K of additional memory to store the index in.) When the DOS menu appars type '!}L', then type 'INDEX.COM'. (If you are using OS/A+ or DOSXL just type 'INDEX' at the D1: prompt.) T!}his will load and run INDEX.COM.NOTE: Be sure your Atari PaperClip key is plugged into joystick port 2. INDEX.COM will not!} run if the key is not plugged in.After INDEX.COM has loaded you will see the main screen. This is the screen that says "!}PaperClip Index Generator" at the top. It also will give the version number of the program. At the bottom of the screen is !}a number followed by the phrase "Bytes free". This tells you how much memory INDEX.COM can use to store the index. On the s!}ame screen there is also a prompt saying "Index word file:". Type in the name of the file containing the words that are to b!}e indexed (the first file you created), and press RETURN. (You don't need to type the "D:", INDEX.COM will put on the name f!}or you. If the file is not on drive 1, type "Dn:filename.ext", where "n" is the drive number.) Every time you press RETURN,!} INDEX.COM prints a status line at the top of the screen giving the name of the file you just gave it.Next you will be ask!}ed to enter the "Source file:". This is the second file you created (the one with the funny header). Just type in the file !}name and press RETURN.Finally you will be asked for the "Destination file:". This is the file INDEX.COM will write the ind!}ex to. You can either have INDEX.COM write the index to a disk file, or to the printer. To send it directly to the printer !}type "P:". To send it to a disk file just type the filename and press RETURN (just like you did for the other two pr!}ompts). When you press RETURN for the third time, the message "Generating INDEX word list." will be printed. INDEX.COM will!} then read in the INDEXWORDFILE, and create a list of the words to be indexed. Next a message saying "Indexing source file!}." will be printed. INDEX.COM will then read in the SOURCEFILE and generate the index. As it reads the SOURCEFILE, a mess!}Gage will appear telling you what page it is reading. After INDEX.COM finishes reading the SOURCEFILE, the message "Writing !}destination file." will appear. INDEX.COM will then write the index to the destination file. (Either the printer or the dis!}[k file you told it to use.) At the bottom of the screen there should be a message saying "_N Bytes used". This lets you k!}now how much of the available memory INDEX.COM used to generate the index.3.THE INDEXThe index that INDEX.COM genera!}tes is an alphabetical list of the words in the INDEXWORDFILE. Each word is printed in lower case followed by the page num!}ber(s) that the word is on. The page numbers are seperated by commas. If a word does not occur in the SOURCEFILE no page n!}umbers will be printed after it.4.ERROR MESSAGES:Whenever an error occurs when running INDEX.COM, an error message w!}ill be printed in the middle of the screen. Some errors will also print a prompt saying "Press RETURN to continue" at the bo!}ttom of the screen. When you press RETURN, you will get the main screen and the "Index word file:" prompt again.--- NOT !}ENOUGH MEMORY TO STORE THE INDEX WORDSThis message occurs when there is not enough memory for INDEX.COM to store all the wo!}rds to be indexed. When you press RETURN you will return to the main INDEX.COM screen. If this error occurs, first check th!}at there is no cartridge installed (on XL/XE computers make sure OPTION was held down when DOS was booted).--- RAN OUT OF !}MEMORY WHILE INDEXINGThis message occurs when INDEX.COM runs out of memory while reading the SOURCEFILE. It stops indexin!}g the file, and writes the partial index that was generated to the destination file.If you get either OUT OF MEMORY messag!}e, the only solution is to break the INDEXWORDFILE into pieces. Try making two INDEXWORDFILEs, one with the words from A!} to L, the other with M to Z. Then run INDEX.COM twice, once using each INDEXWORDFILE. Then you can combine the two index!}es using PaperClip. (If you still get OUT OF MEMORY errors break the INDEXWORDFILE into 3 or 4 pieces instead of 2.)--- !} UNABLE TO OPEN THE INDEXWORDFILEThis message occurs when INDEX.COM is unable to read the INDEXWORDFILE. Make sure you!}G typed in the correct file name and drive number. When RETURN is pressed, the main screen and the "Index word file:" prompt !}will be printed.--- UNABLE TO OPEN THE SOURCEFILEThis message occurs when INDEX.COM is unable to read the SOURCEFILE. !} Make sure you typed in the correct file name and drive number. When RETURN is pressed, the main screen and the "Index word !}file:" prompt will be printed.--- ERROR WHILE WRITING DESTINATION FILEThis message will be printed when INDEX.COM is un!}able to open the destination file. If you are writing to the printer, make sure the printer is on and online. If writing to!} a disk make sure the disk is in the drive and is not write protected. You may either press 'Y' (which tells INDEX.COM to tr!}y again) or 'N' (which tells INDEX.COM to return to the main screen).5.LIMITATIONSINDEX.COM will only index single w!}ords, it will not index phrases. If you need to index phrases, place an underline (shift minus) between the words in the SOU!}RCEFILE, and in the INDEXWORDFILE.INDEX.COM will not index words containing symbols. The are used as delimiters between!} words. The symbols used as delimiters are:",.;:?!"[]#&'@()<>-=+*The symbols:_%$are treated!} as charcters, and may be present in words.6.QUESTIONSIf there are any questions or comments on INDEX.COM send them to!}] Dan Moore [74035,243] in SIG*ATARI on CIS, or DLM in SIG*ATARI on DELPHI.INDEXINDEX.COMf 1, 2, 3, 4INDEX WORD F!}ILE 1, 2, 3, 4key# 11, 2PaperClip: M1, 2, 3SOURCE FILET 1, 2, 3, 4EX.COM REQUIRES THE ATARI PAPE _|QU` &` Fj`8冨凪` QEӅӥ Q`ʆǪƩ Ɛee%}LJ` QƦʆǢ &Ɛeǐ Q QLQ Q'&&&8儨児祂*LQ&&*ń8&&%}LLQ *R`hihiHHȱȱLڧ`P GHFH`ͪRLR RRRRR%}RRRLS`RmRRiR RRLR`L$S SS SS R`SL;S7S6S7S6S !S R`m5 dTS6SLaSQSPS%}wRS0SSRS mZS*(m[S]S\SQS\S]SLS8QS\SQSSSLSSSPS RLSLS8RSRSRSILSLSLlS`){ %}CZBHIJKED V䌶R``LTT T S`^ B JKIH%}ǥiDiELV`RTSLT RvTvT TwTixTiwTxTyT{TvT S`LTT%}ǩTɭT ST`LTLHLT RTTT TTͶRL ULmUTIL-ULmUTI~LPU8TTTLMUTLjUTmTTi%}DžTTLUTT8T`LUUUUU T`[\ZUVT` R R` R R`LLU RUUUU%}DžTUU !S`U TLU RU UUUU@U TUUIL)VLVU RUI~LdVUUmUUiUUM%}@ULaVLVL|V8UUUIL|VUL VUUU U`EEN#` @ R RLVPress V`&} @Vĩ R RLWPress to continueV !S TILW` XTL#W RW TWWW }TͶRL&}ǛW} RLrWUnable to open file: W\ UWW U T V``} RLWD1:*.*W }TV&}u U RRILWLWLW T V`LWV WL/XVV S T``@ `5XL>X4X4XzJ&}Ǯ)9Xe:Xi4X)`LsLuXqXpXqXV-pXLX``LX RXXXXV`XXLV X&}LXXXͻXLXXXXLXX ;X QmVXmVXXͼXLYXXͻXLYXXLY&}XmXXi8X rXXXXXXLY8XX XLYXXXL.YX RXLYX ͼXLY &}RXLY`YLYYY R& R RY RY RYYYZZYL(ZRV RY XYLZ` R: R R&}ǩ R RVVL`ZZA YVVLtZza YVVLZ@! The FX80 set may be written to disk *}and included into a PaperClip document using the verbatim command. This allows the user to change the character set his docu*}ment will print in. The FX80 set may also be sent directly to the printer for testing of the set being converted.OPERATION*}:To run FXSET, (L)oad it from the DOS menu (or type FXSET at the OS/A+ or DOSXL prompt). The program will load and then as*}k for the file name of the Atari character set. If RETURN is pressed with no filename, the internal Atari ROM character set *}will be used. Otherwise the Atari character set will be read in from the specified disk file. (Be sure to put D: on the sta*}rt of the filename, FXSET will not prepend it for you.) Next the program will ask for the name of the FX80 set. This is the*} file to write the converted set to. You may either type D:filename.ext or P:. If you type D:filename.ext the output will b*}e sent to the specified file. It may then be included into a PaperClip document by using the verbatim command (Ctrl-ZV).Ne*}Gxt the program will ask which portions of the Atari character set are to be converted. The set is broken into four pieces: u*}pper case characters, lower case characters, symbols (numbers and punctuation.) and control codes (these normally are not pri* }ntable, but may be accessed thru special printer commands, look at the FX80 manual for details.). If you wish to convert any*!} section just type 'Y' at the prompt, pressing 'N' will cause that section not to be converted. Any sections that are not co*"}nverted will print in the normal FX80 character set. After you specify the sections to be converted the program will state t*#}hat it is converting the set. When it finishes you will return to the first prompt (Atari set name) if you sent the converte*$}d set to disk. If the set was sent directly to the printer, the program will ask if you wish to see a print sample. Pressin*%}g 'Y' will cause a short sample of all the symbols and characters to be output. The first copy of the sample is printed in n*&}ormal type, the second is printed in bold (emphasized) type. The program will then return to the first prompt.USE WITH PA*'}PERCLIP:(The following desciption assumes you are using the FX80.CNF file on the PaperClip master diskette.)To use a con*(}verted set with PaperClip, direct the output of FXSET to D:filename.ext. When it is thru, boot PaperClip, and load the text *)}file you desire to print. On the first line of the text file type:ctrl-ZVfilename.extThis will tell PaperClip t**}o copy the verbatim file directly to the printer. All text after the verbatim command will print in the converted Atari char*+}acter set. If you wish to use the standard FX80 set, place a user command number 1 in the text. This will switch back to th*,}e standard FX80 set. If you want to use the download set again, place a user command number 2 in the text. User command num*-}ber 3 clears the downloaded character set.NOTE: You may use the verbatim command more than once in a single text file. This*.} allows you to use several different character sets in the same document. But only one download set will be resident in the */}printer at a time.NOTE: In PaperClip version 1.0 the user command are 'LINE' commands. This means that they execute at the *0}Gstart of the print line, no matter where they are located in the line. (ie. You can't change character sets just for one wo*1}1rd, it must be for at least a whole line.) In PaperClip version 1.1 the user commands are 'CHARACER' commands, so you CAN sw*2}itch character sets for each word (or letter for that matter). You are not limited to one change per line.HOW IT WORKS:*3}FXSET reads in a standard 1024 byte Atari charcter set, then converts selected portions of the set into FX80 printer commands*4} that change the character set. Atari characters are defined in an 8 by 8 grid, and there are no limitations on adjacent pix*5}els being on or off. On the FX80 characters are defined in a 8 by 11 grid. This means they are 3 pixels wider than Atari ch*6}aracters are. Also no to adjacent pixels may be printed, there must be a gap of at least one pixel that is off. FX80 takes *7}this into account, and will not allow you to set to adjacent pixels in a character. It ignores the second pixel. Atari char*8}acters usually have a one pixel boundary around them, effectively making them a 6 by 6 character. It is recommend that you e*9}dit the Atari character set before converting it, so that they use the full 8 by 8 grid. (Any standard character set editor *:}may be ued.)The Epson FX80 has a 9 pin print head, but no more than 8 pins can be used in a single character. A character *;}can either use the top 8 pins or the bottom 8 pins. This is controlled by the attribute byte of each character. FXSET uses *<}the top 8 pins for all characters except lower case, which use the bottom 8 pins. This allows lower case characters to have *=}a 1 pixel decender.Daniel L.
