******************************************************************** 4. Dipl.Phys.Volker Grassmann, DF5AI Hannoversche Str. 103 3400 Goettingen-Weende P.S. fuer PACKET-RADIO-Amateure bin ich ueber DB0FE zu erreichen. This is an amateur radio RTTY program for the Atari ST. Capabilities: 1. BAUDOT (60, 75, & 100 WPM) ASCII (110 & 300 Baud) 2. Variable size split Screen Drag the MOVE bar on the transmit window to change size Type ahead to transmit window during receive. 3. Write Sessions to disk Received and transmitted characters are written to disk in the order they occur on the air. 4. Read disk files into transmit buffer. 5. Desk accessory support. NOTE--received characters are written to receive window even while desk accessory is active. This works OK as long as the desk accessory is running in a GEM window because RTTY uses GEM to determine if its window is obscured by another window. However, GEM forms (e.g. the standard file selector form) are not windows and are not protected from being overwritten on the screen by the RTTY program. 6. Limited line editing for transmitting. (delete back to beginning of current line) 7. Drop down menus are used for all functions except: F1 switches unconditionally and immediately to receive mode, and sets RTS off. F2 switches unconditionally and immediately to transmit mode, sets RTS on, and starts transmitting characters from the transmit buffer. When there are none, it holds the modem in the MARK state (no diddling). F3 inserts a character in the transmit buffer (displayed as a greek letter phi) that is not transmitted, but switches back to receive mode when it is reached. Any characters following the F3 character remain in the transmit buffer and will be sent when F2 is selected again. F4 allows deletion of all characters in the transmit buffer (after a confirmation). The deleted characters remain in the transmit window in the display, however. NOTES: RTTY.PRG and RTTY.RSC must reside in the same folder. The program exits immediately if the resource file is missing. The ASCII/Baudot conversion is from the 1982 ARRL Radio Amateur's Handbook, the chapter on Specialized Communications Systems. The FIGS code used is the US Figures (versus the CCITT No 2 Figures). The Bell character (FIGS 5) does not ring a bell, but prints a diamond character. When transmitting Baudot, the conversion from ASCII is done as characters are removed from the type ahead buffer. Characters that do not translate into Baudot are simply discarded at that time, even though they appear on the transmit half of the screen. I use the NOTEPAD desk accessory from COMPUTE! April, 1987 Atari ST disk if I need a real text editor to compose for transmission, which makes up somewhat for the limited editing capability of the RTTY program itself. This is the main purpose of the "SWITCH RECORDING..." menu entry. It allows you to close the file currently being recorded, open a new one for recording, and then NOTEPAD can open the old one for inspection, or retransmitting text if you like. I used Megamax C compiler and resource editor to develop this program (but you don't need a C compiler to run it). This program was written and tested on an Atari 1040ST with single disk drive and monochrome monitor. My RTTY modem is a Heathkit HD3030 and my rig is a Kenwood TS-440S. I don't know whether this program will work on any other hardware although I think it should. Specifically, the color monitor could be a problem. I'd like to hear from anyone that tries this program on a color monitor, as well as from anyone that finds this program useful at all. Features - Baudot (Murray) and ASCII operation. - Split screen display. - Status line including time & date. - CQ, RY, and QBF messages. - Automatic newlines with selectable line width. - Word editing to correct typing errors. - Type ahead buffer to prepare transmit messages while receiving. - Transmit text from a disk file. - Save received text into a file. - Printer output. Version 2.1 Changes - Baud rate fixed for 67 WPM. - Smooth scrolling. - Does not hang up if printer not ready. - Unshift on Space. - Filtering of received data: Carriage Return / Line Feed will always occur in pairs, most ASCII control characters are discarded. - No delay switching between Transmit and Receive when buffer is empty. Interface Connection to "terminal unit" (modem) is through the serial port on the back of the ST. pin name function 1 PG cable shield 2 TxD transmitted data to modem 3 RxD received data from modem 4 RTS activate transmitter when positive 7 SG signal ground Screen Layout The screen is divided into several regions: +-------------------------------------------------+ | [ Prompt For Input ] | | | | | | | | Received Data | | | | | +-------------------------------------------------+ | Status line | +-------------------------------------------------+ | | | Transmitted Data | | | +-------------------------------------------------+ | Mini Help Line | +-------------------------------------------------+ Incoming data is displayed in the top portion of the screen. Sometimes the top line is used to prompt for and collect input, for example the name of a file to send. Characters typed at the keyboard are displayed in the lower region of the screen. The bottom line contains a brief reminder of the function key uses. The status line contains the following information: speed and mode -- "WPM" indicates Baudot in Words Per Minute. "ASCII" indicates ASCII in Baud. transmit -- "recv" means receive. "XMIT" means transmit. "xmit" means transmit steady mark tone during the transition. lc/UC -- Indicates whether whether letters will be displayed in lower or upper case in Baudot mode. Prnt -- When present all received data is sent to the printer. file name -- A file name is present when saving received data into a file. w=72 -- Maximum width of a line sent from the keyboard. b=0 -- Number of characters in the transmit buffer. time & date -- Current time and date. The Keyboard In this version, all input is through the keyboard. The functions of special keys are listed below. The abbreviations on the mini help line are shown in parentheses after the name of the key. Esc - Toggles between transmit and receive. This might not be a good choice because it is too easy to hit accidentally next to the "1". Undo - Exit the program. Return - Start a new line. It is usually not necessary to use this because a word too long to fit on the current line will automatically be placed on the next line. Backspace, Delete - Used to correct typing mistakes before the current word is transferred to the transmit buffer. Explained in the next section. F1 (Speed) - Selects the next mode and speed. This version has Baudot at 60, 67, 75, and 100 WPM. ASCII at 110 and 300 baud. F2 (UC/lc) - ASCII has both upper and lower case but Baudot has only one case. This key toggles a switch which determines whether Baudot letters are displayed as upper or lower case. F3 (SaveF) - Save received data in a file. After pressing this key, a prompt for the file name will appear on the top line. Type the file name and press Return. If the file was opened successfully, its name will be placed on the status line. Otherwise a beep will signal an error. To close the current file without opening another one, just press Return when the prompt appears. F4 (Print) - Toggles printer output on and off. "Prnt" appears on the status line when printer output is enabled. F5 (Width) - This program automatically generates new lines (CR/LF) when input from the keyboard exceeds the maximum line width. Line widths available are 64, 72, and 80. The current value is displayed on the status line and pressing this key selects the next one. F6 (RY) - This is equivalent to typing a line of alternating "R" and "Y" characters. This combination is the traditional test pattern for Baudot because the two characters have alternating zero and one bits (01010 and 10101). It would make sense to use "*" and "U" in ASCII (0101010, 1010101) but might confuse people. F7 (QBF) - Send the Quick Brown Fox message to test all the letters in the alphabet. F8 (deCall) - Send "de" followed by your call. F9 (SendF) - Send a file. You will be prompted for the name of the file at the top of the screen. Transmission of it can be terminated by pressing this key again before it is finished. F10 (CQ) - Turn on the transmitter, send a CQ message, and turn the transmitter off again. Word Editing As printable characters are pressed on the keyboard, they appear in the transmit (lower) region of the screen. Rather than being transmitted immediately, they are saved in a section of memory called the word buffer. This allows corrections to be to the current word. (Here a "word" is defined as any group of adjacent printable characters.) For example, suppose you typed: Location is Chelmsfid Trailing characters of the current word may be removed by pressing either the Backspace or Delete key. In this example, pressing Backspace twice would leave the following: Location is Chelmsf You could then complete the word by typing "ord". The word buffer is emptied each time a group of printable characters is terminated by a space or Return. In this example, it would have been too late to go back and fix up the first two words. When groups of letters are removed from the word buffer, they are not transmitted immediately. Instead they are placed in the transmit buffer. While receiving, the characters just sit there waiting. This allows you to start typing your next transmission while still receiving. (The number of characters in the transmit buffer is displayed on the status line.) During transmit, the characters are sent as fast as the serial port can handle them. Problem Reports, Suggestions, Updates, etc. This program was ported from another machine with a minimum number of changes so it does not use any of the GEM features such as the file selector dialog box. This version is adequate to get your ST on the air but it's missing many desirable features. I will fix any serious problems reported but plan no further development of this program. I have several more interesting projects in the queue and too little time left over after work at a start-up company, little kids, and other responsibilities. For those who would like to customize this program or just learn more about the ST, source code is available for $10. It is written in C and reasonably well commented so you should have little difficulty figuring out what is going on. Source code is copyrighted and will be provided only under the condition that you agree to not give it to anyone else. For any program derived from YARP, I ask that you mention its heritage and share it with others through user groups such as the Atari Microcomputer Network. There is surprizingly little ham radio and electronics software available for the ST. Will you do your part to help correct this? Or will you sit back and watch PC clones dominate the world? Atari Microcomputer Network There is an organization dedicated to Amateur radio and Atari computers (both the ST and old 8-bit models). Accessories to Enhance Your RTTY Pleasure Tired of struggling to tune in signals? Frustrated by old fashioned methods such as signal strength meters, dual ellipse patterns on an oscilloscope or just plain random fiddling until it works? You need the WB2OSZ digital tuning indicator. This unique device features a LED bar graph display with each segment corresponding to a narrow range of frequencies. The basic principle is illustrated below. "*" indicates a lit LED segment. "v" represents a mark on the front panel. v v _ | * | Mark tone v v _ | * | Space tone v v _ | * * | Properly tuned FSK signal v v _ | * * | Tones too low v v _ | * * | Shift too narrow You can instantly see - if signal is steady frequency or FSK. - whether tones are too high, too low, or just right. - amount of frequency shift. The digital circuitry offers greater accuracy and versatility than analog designs. It's crystal controlled so it never requires any calibration. See 73 for Radio Amateurs, August 1986 (special packet issue!), page 40 for all the details. A later revision of the circuit has a larger EPROM and switch selection of different tone pairs. Unfortunately Valley Electronics had some problems and is no longer in the electronic kit business. A more experienced kit manufacturer has shown some interest in producing this handy gadget and is currently evaluating a unit. If this sounds interesting send me an SASE and I'll let you if it works out. 1252 pool 25 ethiopia and somalia exchange prisoners-of-war addis ababa, aug 23 ktanjug) a ethiopia and somalia today made an exchange of prisoners-of-war in the ethiopian town of dire dava in the ogaden region, over which the two countries waged the bloody "ogaden war" in 1977 and 1978. the exchange encompasses over 3,500 ethiopian and 29 somalian prisoners-of-war. ethiopias official news agency ena notes that the exchange of p.o.w.s is "one of the most important events in the process of normalizing relations between ethiopia and somalia." mogadishu and addis ababa signed a peace agreement in april this year. among the most important measures carried out by the two countries in the normalization of their relations, ena lists the withdrawal of troops from the common frontier and the establishment of diplomatic relations. also agreed to was a stop to supporting subverive activities aimed one against the other. in keeping with the agreement, ethiopia has ceased aiding the insurgents of the somali national movement (snm), who are fighting against the government of mohamed siad barre, while mogadishu has stopped its long-standing aid to pro-somali insurgents in the ogaden region. more ps ethiopia and...(two) it has been learned that those released today included cuban citizen orlwvatos, who was captured by somalian troops on ethiopian territory in 1978. carlos belonged to the cuban contingent numbering several thousand soldiers which w zd thenohiopian army to drive the somalian invasion troops out of ogaden. the numtr of released ethiopian prisonevkaof-we is unknown, as, according to an official announcement from mogadishu, several dozen of them havmom live in canada and noopqv ethiopia after they are libaratm the officepof the united nation high commissioner for refugees (unhcr) ip nairobi, however. ss that it has no information on this matter. end ps ohv 1258 pool - wy- computer company pulls out ofms africa london, 23 aug (pna) the us. computer giant, unisys, is pulling out of south africa; it las reported in london tuesday. the report by the independent newspaper said the decision followed an earlier spate of corporate us withdrawals from south africa and comes amid growing convnrn on capitol hill about us trade with south africa. lnyertnight ago, the us house of representaowves passed sweeping sanctions against south africa which would end almost all economic ties with the pretoria regime. the bill calls for the end of all us investment in qmh africa and requiges companies and individuals to sell their holdings. unisys said it had agreed to sell its oarketing and sale subsidiary to mercedes information technology, a south akrican firm with existing intern ectronics. the uksouth african subsidiary generated about 1 per cent of the companys 10 billion us dollars and employs some 600 people.
