DC STuffer acts just like the desktop, you can open up any desk accessory, and if it does not take complete control of the desktop (or the program you are running) you can go to DC STuffer again to open another desk accessory. This version has a limit of 32 DAs. Version 1.0 has no limit and allows you to load or unload DAs at will without the need to reserve memory for the DAs. DC STuffer program allows you to load a desk accessory and run it as a program. INSTRUCTIONS for version 0.9 ============================ We hope you enjoy using DC STuffer. Here is how to use version 0.9: Simply place DCSTUFFR.ACC with your normal boot-up DAs. Any DA you wish to be loaded by DC STuffer must be placed in the folder STUFFER which MUST be in the ROOT directory of your boot disk. This version limits you to loading 32 DAs. If you wish to abort the loading, press the RIGHT SHIFT button at any time before or during the loading sequence. DC STuffer will ALWAYS leave at least 128K of memory for the operation of programs and the desktop. If the load stops prematurely, you have either loaded in 32 DAs, or have 128K or less left of memory. When you select DC STuffer from the DESK menu you will be presented with either 0-20 DA names, or 18 DA names and arrows to scroll through the DA names, in a drop-down menu similar to the desktop's menu. The DAs will be highlighted similar to the desktop menu. When the DA you want to activate is highlighted, press the left mouse button. Pressing the right mouse button while at the DC STuffer menu will exit DC STuffer, as will moving the mouse into the menubar area, or clicking outside of the drop-down menu. You can load up to 20 DAs and access them at a glance when DC STuffer is selected. If, however, you load in more than 20 DAs, you will see 18 DAs and up and down scroll arrows. Click on the arrows to go up or down in the DA list. If you can no longer go in the desired direction, the arrows will be disabled and not selectable. The speed of this ram disk is much improved over that in the popular INTERSECT Ramdisk that it replaces, as a matter of fact, it is nearly twice as fast as the original. It is functionally similar to its predecessor except that drives C through P may be designated for installation. The print spooler is installable in any size and may be removed (as can the ramdisk) and re-installed at a different size. Also included is the ability to save startup settings so that the ramdisk, print spooler or both may be auto installed at bootup. By popular demand, we have also given you the option of turning off the Sounds and the Warning Messages. Putting RAMBABY On Your System To use this accessory you must place "RAMBABY.ACC" on your boot disk so that it will be included as a desk accessory the next time you start your ST. Using RAMBABY To use RAMBABY you need only click on the "INTERSECT Rambaby" selection bar contained within the "Desk" heading of your menu. Rambaby will then present you with a Dialogue box containing the selector buttons for the Ram Disk and Print Spooler. A display of the currently available memory appears in the middle left of the Dialogue. To install the Ram Disk simply enter the size, in K-Bytes, that you wish to allocate, click on the appropriate drive letter and press the INSTALL Button. Provided that there is enough memory, a success tune will be played, failure to install is usually due to lack of memory. Once installed the Ram Disk can be removed by selecting the REMOVE button. If you have reset your system with the Ram Disk installed you should simply install the Ram Disk by clicking on the OK button in the warning dialogue. If, however, you actually have an active disk on the specified drive you should click on the Cancel button, select an available drive and click on INSTALL again. After successfully installing press the EXIT button to close the RAMBABY Selector box. Before you can actually use the Ram Disk you must tell GEM about it. This is done by clicking once on any drive ICON (so that it is highlighted) and selecting the Install Disk Drive selection bar in the Options header of your menu. The Install Disk Drive dialogue will be presented. Change the Drive Identifier to match the Ram Disk Drive you have installed (C through P). You may then optionally change the Icon Label to Ram Disk. To complete the installation press the Install button an the new disk Icon will appear somewhere on the Desktop. Move it to where you like and it is ready for use. If you want the Icon to always appear automatically when you boot just save your desktop at this point. The Ram Disk and/or Print Spooler may also be set up so that they automatically install when you boot your ST. This is accomplished by creating an auto boot file, which can be done from the RAMBABY Dialogue. To create the auto boot simply set the drive specification, desired Ram Disk Size and Print Spool size in Rambaby Dialogue and press INSTALL on either or both. Once it is installed as you wish it to boot, simply press the SET AUTO button and the file RAMBABY.AUT will be written to your boot disk. The next time that you boot your system RAMBABY will configure itself exactly as you had last set it. Print Spooler Special Features The RAMBABY Print Spooler has some special features not available in most ST print spoolers. These features are activated from the RAMBABY dialogue box and function as follows: - Spooler "ON" is the normal state of the Print Spooler and desig- nates that it is active (if installed) and spooling output. - Spooler "OFF" will stop output from the spooler and allow you to directly print. Printing of data left in the spooler will continue when "ON" is re-selected. - Spooler "FLUSH" will empty the contents of the spooler, this is effectively the same as Removing and Re-installing the spooler. Memory Management Limitations The Memory Management in your ST operating system has several limitations that will affect the way that you handle Ram Disk and Print Spooler Installation as follows: 1.) When changing resolutions you must first de-install the Ram Disk and Print Spooler by clicking their respective REMOVE buttons. (All data in the Ram Disk and print spooler will be lost at that time so make sure that you have backed up anything you will later need). Failure to de-install before a resolution change will cause unpredictable results. 2.) When the Ram Disk or Print Spooler is first removed the memory available indicator will often not show the total amount of memory available. To reclaim all available memory you must run a program from the desktop (showing a file will do the job just fine). 3.) Never install the Ram Disk or Print Spooler from within a program unless you intend to de-install it before you exit the program. The ST operating system will treat the memory allocated like program memory and free it when you return to the desktop, the results of which are unpredictable. You may however de-install or view available memory at any time. In summary, always install the Ram Disk or Print Spooler from the Desktop and you will not experience this problem. When these files are put on your boot disk, the RamBuffer accessory will be properly installed and can be selected from the Desk dropdown menu. When selected, the RamBuffer accessory will open up a window on your screen. It is divided into two parts : Printer Buffer Ram Disk Printer Buffer: Just enter amount of RAM needed for the printer buffer and click on install. When you send something to the printer, the contents is stored in the printer buffer and sent to the printer. Your computer will be freed up after the printer buffer has received the entire document from the computer. If while printing, you decide to stop the printing process, you can click on NOW IN USE from within RAMBUFFR.ACC. This will clear the printer buffer. Ram disk: Just like the printer buffer, select the amount of memory that you want set aside for the Ram Disk and click on INSTALL. The Drive D ICON has already been installed on your MICRO-TIME disk. To install a different drive ICON, just click on a different drive letter in the USE DRIVE section and install the appropriate drive ICON from the desktop. Then if you Save Desktop, your ramdisk drive Icon will appear on boot up, as Drive A & B do. Because of the way GEM operates, the Ram disk or the printer buffer should only installed or removed from the desktop for best results. This is because a good share of programs take up all of available memory for themselves. Exit / Save After you are finished, click on DONE with the mouse or just press RETURN. Gem-Term is free...give it out all over the free world. Gem Term is a handy little ACC that gives you a simple terminal program. While it doesn't have as many features as other terminal programs, Gem-Term has the distinguishing feature that it has its own window, and can be run right on the desktop, or from within any other GEM program. This means you can be running a word processor, doing file stuff or even playing a game and instantly have access to a terminal program at the same time. Useage: Gem-Term is extremely simple to use. Make sure that TERM.RSC is on the same disk as GEMTERM.ACC and boot up your system. To open Gem-Term, go to the DESK menu and select the Gem-Term option. A window will then open on the screen. In version .9 the window is 15 lines high and 80 or 40 colums wide(depending on the resolution you are in) The window can not be resized but can be moved around. When the Gem-Term window is the active window, it functions like any other terminal program: typing sends output to the modem and the modem will output to the screen. If the Gem-Term window is active, clicking on the Gem-Term accessory slot lets you change the following options: Baud Rate: toggle between 300 and 1200 baud Duplex: If you can't see what you're typing switch to Half Duplex. If everything you type is double, switch to Full Duplex. Line Feeds: If the lines of text over write each other turn linefeeds on, else leave them off. Click OK when satisfied. If the Gem-Term window was inactive, it will be brought to the top. Gem-Term is my first working program using GEM, and was written completely with standard GEM and VDI calls in Megamax C. It was fairly large (for a DA), and it took up not one but two "slots," one for itself and one for "Install Printer." Plus, once I set the colors and other choices to my personal preferences, I would rarely even look at it. However, if it wasn't on the boot disk, you didn't get many of the "defaults" that are saved in the DESKTOP.INF file (resolution, icon and window arrangement, and any program installation information is taken care of by GEM itself, using the DESKTOP.INF file). Preferences set by the Control Panel include: RS-232 settings (well, actually the VT-52 Emulator sets these) Printer settings Color choices Mouse double-click speed Keyclick on/off Console bell on/off Keyboard delay time Keyboard repeat rate So, I wrote The ROCP. It's pretty simple - upon boot-up it reads the DESKTOP.INF file, and sets up all of your preferences listed above. It will also be listed in the "Desk" menu, so that if you run across one of those "misbehaving" programs that doesn't reset your colors and/or other preferences after exiting to the desktop, just pull it down and The ROCP will fix you right up. One thing The ROCP does do "better" that Atari's Control Panel is "sluggish" about is setting the system clock from the keyboard clock right at boot up. This will only help you if you've got a mod to "remember" the time and date (like the NonSTop Clock) that doesn't require special software to read the time/date. If you've got one, you're all set. Also, The ROCP works properly in any resolution. If there's a problem reading DESKTOP.INF on boot-up, The ROCP will register in the "Desk" menu as "ROCP Error!" Make sure the DESKTOP.INF file is on your boot disk for The ROCP to work properly. I'm happy to report that the two known bugs in 0.3, i.e. not setting the double-click speed on boot up and "misbehaving" with Timeworks' Word Writer ST (although I'm STILL convinced something strange is going with that program!) have been fixed in this release. As an added "feature," The ROCP will "automatically" reset your prefs after exiting a GEM application. It differs from the VT52 emulator in one major way - it's in a window. This means that you can keep it on the screen while doing other things - For example, you could open Window Term while using a word processor, and switch between your document and Window Term - both will be on the screen. If you've used the Control Panel, Window Term is similar to that. It is a GEM window like any other. Window Term represents a lot of work. However, in the interest of getting this program to as many people as possible, I have made it completely public domain. It may be distributed in any way. The Stripped version is smaller and faster, but has almost no features. You must use an external program to set the RS232 port when using the Stripped version. The Full version is bigger and slower, but has many features discussed in detail below. It's helpful to read the documentation for both before you decide which is best for you. To install the Stripped version, just copy the file WTERM.ACC to the root directory of a floppy or hard disk. When you boot with that disk, it will be listed in the 'Desk' menu as Window Term. To install the Full version, copy the files WTERMF.ACC and WTERMF.RSC to the root directory of a floppy or hard disk. The Full version is listed in the Desk menu as Window Terminal. Stripped Version ---------------- The stripped version, as mentioned above, is much smaller and slightly faster than the full version. There are two versions of window term in order to maintain as much flexibility as possible. Note that with the Stripped version, you must use an external program (such as the Install RS232 desk accessory or a terminal program) to set the RS232 parameters. When you click on Window Term, a window will open on the screen with the title 'Window Term' (there may be some version information in the title also). This is a full GEM window - you can move it, size it, full it, close it, and select it, just like any other window. When the window is active, anything you type will be sent to the RS232 port, and anything coming from the RS232 port will be displayed in the window. Text will wrap at the end of a line and scroll just as in a text screen. There are two special keys you should be aware of when using the stripped version - ALT-F toggles between the normal text font and the small 'icon' font (the same font that's used for the names of icons). ALT-S stops the text immediately. This is necessary because the terminal is sometimes slower than the incoming characters, and will keep printing backed-up characters after you send a CTRL-S to the remote computer. ALT-S sends a CTRL-S and will not accept any incoming characters until you press ALT-S again. Click on the Window Term entry in the desk menu while the window is open for more information. When the window is deselected (another window is made active), Window Term will send a CTRL-S to the RS232 port. When it is reselected, it will send a CTRL-Q. Full Version ------------ The Full version is larger and slower than the stripped version, but has many extra features. It takes up about 40K of memory, while the stripped version take up about 15K. The Full version has all the features of the stripped version except the ALT-F command (which is replaced by a more flexible function of the same sort). In addition, it has the following features: -Ability to set RS232 parameters, similar to the 'Install RS232' desk accessory -Ability to change the font to any of three sizes (two sizes in color) -An optional cursor -Allows the user to set the size of the RS232 buffer -Ability to save all of the above parameters and the coordinates and size of the window to disk Each of these features are discussed in detail below. To access them, click on the 'Window Terminal' entry in the Desk menu while the window is open. You will be presented with a menu. Click on the option you wish to use. Each of the options are discussed below. About Window Term gives some information about the program and credit to the author. Set RS232 Parameters allows you to set the Baud Rate, Parity, Word Length, and other RS232 parameters. It's very straightforward - just select the parameters you want active, and click on the OK button. If you do not want to set the parameters after all, click on the CANCEL button. Set RS232 Buffer Size allows you to set the size of the RS232 buffer. The higher your baud rate, the bigger the RS232 buffer should be. I find that 16K is usually more than enough for 1200 baud. This program has not been tested with 2400 baud or higher; please let me know if there are any problems with that. If in doubt, though, make the RS232 buffer bigger. Set Character Size allows you to select any of the ST's three character sets - the 'monochrome font', which is the character set used with the monochrome monitor normally, the 'color font', which is the character set normally used with the color monitor, and the 'icon font', which is the tiny font used at the bottom of most icons. Using the icon font, you can get a full 80 columns by 24 lines in a relatively small window. Cursor on/off lets you select or deselect the cursor. The cursor is useful when editing lines and such, but it slows down the terminal quite a bit. Note that backspaces are destructive when you are not using the cursor, and non-destructive when the cursor is active. I don't recommend using the cursor unless absolutely necessary. Save settings saves all the above parameters and the position and size of the window to a file called WTERMF.INF in your root directory. The full version of Window Terminal will attempt to read this file whenever it is booted. If it can't it sets up the default parameters. Cancel cancels the menu. This is a pretty simple desk accessory, but if you call FoReM ST BBSs and use Flash to do so, you are missing out on the 'better' file transfer methods. A very nice one is Ymodem Batch. You simply mark the files you want to receive, then select Ymodem Batch download, and the BBS will send them all, and the receiving terminal program will save them on your disk with the same names as on the BBS. Easy! But, as I said, Flash (which seems to be the terminal program of choice for a lot of users) does not support Ymodem Batch. Until now that is! If you boot your ST with YBATCH.ACC you will see the item Ymodem Batch has been added to the Desk drop-down menu. First - how to exit the accessory if you should accidentally select it or just need to get out of it. Press the Undo key and wait until you hear the bell. You should also see the message that it is aborting. Whenever you hear the bell ringing (once/second) press ANY key and the desk accessory will disappear. How to use it. Call your favorite FoReM ST BBS. (I know you must have one, all the better BBSs use FoReM!) You can use any terminal program that allows you to select the desk accessory; or, in a pinch you can use the VT-52 accessory to call the BBS. When you are in one of the file sections of the BBS, type a B to enable Batch file selection. It should tell you it is enabled. If it tells you otherwise, press it again as it was already on. Now list the files. You will see one file description at a time and if you want to D/L it type a B to mark it for batch D/L. If you don't want to D/L it, press to see the next file. (The N for next is not required as Next is the default.) When you are ready to D/L the files selected (1 to xxx files, depending on the system set- up) get back to the file menu where Ymodem Batch is listed. Tell the BBS to send them using Ymodem Batch by typing a Y. When the BBS says it is ready to send, press your RIGHT mouse button to get to the capture window. Now select the Ymodem Batch desk accessory and sit back! The files will be saved with the name as they were on the BBS. They will be saved to whatever the default drive/directory is. (ie., if you are running Flash on Hard drive C, within folder FLASH, the files will be saved in FLASH on drive C. If you are running FLASH from drive A, the files will be saved on drive A.) If a duplicate file is on the destination drive it will be replaced by the new file. If you run out of room on the disk it won't tell you (at least in this version.) The program runs in medium and high resolutions only and was written in OSS Personal Pascal. When all files selected have been received the bell will ring at 1 second intervals until you press ANY key. The desk accessory will disappear and you will be back 'live' in the capture window of Flash (if using Flash of course). Press the right mouse button again to get back to the main window. The program has been tested at up to 9600 bps using Flash with the expanded RS-232 buffer. I did not test it using the VT-52 emulator at 9600 bps but feel it would probably lose some data at that speed with the small RS-232 buffer. If you use a 9600 bps modem (the USRobotics HST) to call FoReM ST BBSs, you REALLY need ST-TERM from Matt Singer. The Fmodem batch transfer using it is 25% faster than Ymodem with the HST.) How to use with the VT-52 emulator. Run the VT-52 emulator accessory, set up the RS-232 parameters (baud rate, etc) and then call the FoReM ST BBS. Mark your files to be received, and when you get the 'Ready to send' cue, exit the accessory by pressing Undo. Now select the Ymodem Batch accessory and sit back. When completed, press ANY key to get back to the desktop and then re- select the VT-52 accessory. To abort the transfer at any point, press Undo. (2) Choose the files to be downloaded from the sending computer (commonly called tagging). (3) Signal the other computer that you are finished tagging files. (4) When told to do so (START TRANSFER from other computer), click on YMOBAT in the file transfer window and then receive. (5) A file selector box will appear with a message at the top, Choose Download Path. Point and click on the drive and subdirectory (Folder) you want the files downloaded to, then the OK button. From that point on everything is automatic. To abort the download, click on the right mouse button. A header (before the YMODEM block) is sent from the sending computer to your computer telling Interlink the name of the file being sent. Interlink creates the file and starts a standard YMODEM download. At the EOT (end of transmission) of the first file the next filename is sent and the process starts again. This will continue until all tagged files have been sent. Interlink Send (UPLOAD): (1) Setup the receiving computer for Batch YMODEM. (2) In the file transfer window choose YMOBAT and click on send.
