The keyboard player[} lets you use your computer keyboard like a piano keyboard to play tunes, but using real sounds, rather than computer-generat\}ed noises as is usually the case with this type of program. You can have 3 sounds in memory and can quickly change between th]}em while playing tunes. The keyboard player has responsive keys, so that the sound will only play for as long as you hold the^} key down. Just like a synthesizer!! The Digi-Studio disk contains many sounds for use with the keyboard player, ranging from_} church bells, to pig grunts, to a baby crying, to screams, and lots of synthesizer sounds. In fact around 25 sounds in all. `}Why buy a synthesizer when your Atari can do the same?!›› The tune player allows you to play pre-programmed tunes using aa}ny of the available sounds on the disk. A few tunes have been included on the disk for you to play.›› Digi-Studio comes ob}n a DS/SD disk, and includes a printed manual. It is aimed at everyone, whether musically inclined or not! You may just want c}to use it for fun, or compose a tune with it! The comprehensive user manual makes it a joy to use!›› Digi-Studio will onld}y work on XL/XE computers with 64K RAM. No extra hardware is required. The sound samples just play through your TV speaker!››e} The full Digi-Studio package costs just 5pounds (UK), or 10pounds foreign (payable by international money order in UK pof}unds sterling), including printed manual. Unfortunately, they ceased trading a while back. But, ˆ}there are still some of these things around, and you may (like I did) get one second hand.››What is the controller card?›----‰}------------------------››The controller card is a small circuit board which was available for both XL and XE machines. It reŠ}quired some soldering to fit. It also came with a master disk containing various control software. More on this later. A manu‹}al was also supplied.››The basic idea behind the controller card, was that special software could be loaded and remain invisiŒ}ble to whatever software you were running normally. This allows you to do some pretty clever things.››ComputerHouse calls the} controller card the "Desktop Management System".››The Software›------------››Supplied with the controller card is a disk of Ž}master utilities. This disk is double sided, but each side is the same. Side 1 is for printers with 216/n variable line feed,} and side 2 is for printers with 144/n variable line feed.››You simply put the disk in drive 1 and turn the computer on. You }then get the main dektop menu. From here, you can change system parameters, or load other desktop utilities from the disk. Th‘}is is what is available:››System character sets - you can choose from 14 character sets. Once you have set the one you want, ’}it will remain active until you finally turn the computer off.››Control Panel - Lets you alter various parameters. You can tu“}rn auto scroll on/off, turn noisy I/O on/off, turn the key click on/off, turn inverse flash on/off, turn fast cursor on/off, ”}change colour defaults, and alter cassette baud rate. Again, these will all remain active until you turn the computer off.››S•}uperDump II - this desktop utility is very useful. It allows you to stop your main program and dump the contents of memory ou–}t to disk. This is useful for software development, but is also a good way of transferring those awkward tapes to disk, becau—}se this utility dumps the program AFTER it has loaded, therefore by-passing the muti-part tape load problem.››The O.S. boot m˜}enu - This allows you to convert Mutiboot menus to a menu which remains resident under the control of the controller card. Th™}is saves you having to keep loading the menu from disk.››400/800 O.S. saver - 400/800 owners are in for a treat here! If you š}load the desktop software into a 400 or 800, and then select this option, it dumps the O.S to a bootable disk file. Then you ›}just boot this disk into an XL/XE with a controller card and the old O.S remains resident. Your XL/XE is now the closest you œ}can get to a 400/800 because you have the exact old O.S in your XL/XE. This means you have to plug Basic in on cartridge. Als}o, the self test is replaced by the memo pad! This is the utilmate translator!››Snapshot printer dumper - another excellent už}tility for those of you with an Epson compatible printer or an XMM801. You install the printer dumper on your controller cardŸ} and then boot a game or whatever. When you want to dump a screen to the printer, you just press the HELP key. The controller } card takes over and freezes the program and dumps the screen to the printer. When it's done, the program just continues! The¡} printer dumper has draft, SHQ I, and SHQ II modes. Draft seems good enough for me, but SHQ must be even better. Unfortunatel¢}y, these modes don't seem to work on my XMM801.››Disk I/O analyzer - If you load this util in your desktop, any disk you boot£} will cause the controller card to send data to your printer, with the following details: disk status, command status, hardwa¤}re status, memory location, sector, memory buffer, commands sent to disk drive, disk status, call addresses. Each sector read¥} from the disk causes a line of data to be printed detailing what exactly is happening. This allows you to find lost or corru¦}pted files. Holding down the HELP key stops it doing this.››Format disk - Formats a disk in non-standard format. Just used fo§}r the following option:››Save desktop to disk - this allows you to save your favourite set-up to disk as a boot file. This sa¨}ves you having to keep selecting from the menu each time.››Direct exit - performs a cold start. This saves all the set-up det©}ails for you in the desktop, and then boots your disk in the normal way. You can also hold down START here as well if you wanª}t to boot a tape.››The control panel›-----------------››The control panel is a set of little pins which are mounted on top of«} the computer. You have 3 little blocks which slot over the pins in various ways. This gives you extra control over the deskt¬}op.››Desklock - with this set, your own program is unable to re-set your controller card.››RAM mode - your program is allowed} to re-set the desktop with this set. Mainly used if you want to write your own utils for the desktop.››Desktop on - with thi®}s set you can use the desktop facilities.››Desktop off - switches the desktop off completely. Computer now acts like a standa¯}rd XL/XE.››Basic on/off - lets you switch Basic on and off.››You can also switch all these settings while your programs are r°}unning.››The manual›----------››The manual comes as a pile of A4 sheets stapled in one corner. Not the most professional look±}ing document I have seen. It also seems that the author didn't have a very good grasp of English! But, it contains everything²} you need to know, even if it is a little brief!››Problems›--------››It appears that the controller card uses the 16K of RAM ³}hidden under the O.S to store the utils you load onto it. This causes problems if you want to use SpartaDos X or Turbo-Basic ´}or anything else which uses this same area. You have to turn the desktop off in this case.››Conclusions›-----------››The contµ}roller card is a technical piece of kit, which may not be of use to everyone. But if you see one available, grab it! The XL a¶}nd XE versions of it are different, so make sure you know which it is for. Price guide: XL or XE card on its own - 20-25pound·}s, fitted in computer - 35-50pounds. Make sure you get the utils disk and manual. It's useless without these. Also, ComputerH¸}ouse released extra disks for use with the card. I have the 1029 printer dump. Tidied by Dean Garraghty.›------$ä}-----------------------------››Goody! I get to answer another question! Well.... GIF stands for (correct me if I'm not exac$å}tly quoting it, guys!) Graphics Interchange Format. I'm not sure how it's formatted, but it IS compressed. There are at lea$æ}st 2 GIF viewers for the 8-bits. I don't think either care if you have 256k or 16k..(well..256 or 32...).››The programs are $ç}AT8GIF.COM, which stands for Atari8-bit GIF viewer and APACVIEW.COM (I have APACVW12.COM as well.. my ARC of the original APA$è}CVIEW release is really thrashed for some reason...) I'm pretty sure both require a file with RGB data. AT8GIF.COM is good a$é}s far as resolution, but that's it. It can go up to hi-res (320x192x2 - 320 pixels/line, 192 lines/screen, 2 colors) if need$ê}ed (I have a Mac picture somewhere). It's other mode is 160x192x4. The only problem is how it shows the colors. It shows t$ë}hem as red, green, and blue (and black). When mixed, these colors can look good, but most pictures I have SUCK with this vie$ì}wer. It sets up 2x2 pixels to show the colors. Purple would be red,blue/blue,red .. actually, more like red,blue/black,red $í}or something. I don't really recommend this program, but it's good to have just in case.››The other program, APACView was ma$î}de after the programmer (forgot his name) read about APAC screens in Antic or Analog magazine. APAC stands for Any Point, An$ï}y Color. Since you have the 800xl (well..more like NOT a 400/old 800), you have the GTIA chip (George's Television Interface$ð} Adapter?). It's capable of taking 8k of memory and displaying it as 80x192x16. Now, this looks REALLY good. If, say, you $ñ}have a digitized ComputerEyes picture in 16color mode, you can switch APACview into b/w mode and view it fine. (it has 2 load$ò}s.. GIF (*.GIF) and APAC (*.PI9) ). The 3 GTIA modes are: 16 shades of a background color (I made TRUE 256 colors by changing$ó} the backgd down the screen 16 times! using a DLI)...9 colors that can be changed... and 16 colors of a certain brightness (e$ô}xcept black, black stays darkest.) (Note that ONLY mode 9 - 16shades - can view 16 shades, using POKE or SETCOLOR will only $õ}give you 8 shades!)››What APACView does is alternate the modes on the screen (using a DLI, I'll suppose...what else!?). This$ö} gives you 256 simulated colors anywhere on the screen by coloring on the color line, and brightening it on the shade line, s$÷}o if you step back it will look ok. The only problem is because the mode lines are alternated for this program, it gives the$ø} GIF file 1/2 as many lines down the screen to use (not too much of a problem because AT8GIF did pretty much the same thing).$ù} It ALSO is only in 80 columns, giving you a HORRIBLE resolution of 80x96 vs.160x192, but who cares, because as I said, AT8G$ú}IF works about the same as far as ridding you of resolution!››What >I<'d like to see is a really fast page flipper to double $û}the vertical resolution. There would be a full screen of color, and a full screen of shades, then flip between them and simu$ü}ltaneously change between the two modes (color & bw). I've tried.. 'course that was with BASIC, (turboBASIC, mind you, but $ý}still)... Maybe when I get Action!??? ››Also, a neat thing to do is double the horizontal res. by, again, having 2 screens $þ}(doing both uses 4 screens..32k, it would JUST fit on a 48k machine with a reasonably small dos, say MyDOS or AtariDOS must c$ÿ}ontinue later!!!››Bill Kendrick.››t would JUST fit on a 48k machine with a reasonably small dos, say MyDOS or AtariDOS must c$"This article was taken from the newsnet system. Some things to keep in mi) }nd: bigger power supplies are NOT always better - the really big ones (200 watt+) won't even work unless they sense a load on) } the line. A power supply rated between 30 and 70 watts should work OK for a single hard drive setup. Also, be sure you get a) } power supply rated for a hard drive, not a floppy drive. Hard drive power supplies are designed to run 24 hours a day, flopp) }y power supplies aren't. A case and power supply will cost between $50 and $150.››The only cable you'll need is a SCSI cable - a 50)} pin (2 rows x 25 pins) ribbon cable with a female connector on each end. The cable connects the hard drive to the interface.››The last thing you'll need is the hard)} disk driver software and DOS. SpartaDos is much more polished, offering time/date stamping of files, I/O redirection, a much more advanced dir)}ectory structure and many other features. SpartaDos X cartridge now costs around $50 from ICD.››MyDos 4.5 is much closer to A)}tari DOS 2.5, except it features subdirectories, configurable ram disk sizes and hard disk support - it is shareware.
