Fast, sometimes }smooth graphics canbe made easily and moved aroundquickly. Full graphics screens can bemoved up and down with just a fewk}eystrokes. Any ATASCII character canbe used in your creations, and anyediting key can be used to move them. Once you have} created your animation,it can be sent over the modem and seenimmediately by any ATARI user. A list of available commands} follows: A.  When you press this, the Menu willglide off the screen, and you'll seethe cu}rsor in the corner. Try hittingCTRL and any letter key. If you're notfamiliar with the graphics characters, look up the key}board layout in theBASIC manual. For the sake of demonstration, I'llmake a nice logo for a friend. I'mgoing to type out }SUE + FRANK in large, friendly letters. Now that you have some large letterson the screen, try going to the top ofthe scr}een (hold down CTRL and anyarrow key a few times) and SHIFT-INSERT/ SHIFT-DELETE. That will make all ofit move DOWN, then }UP. Now we want to go back to the Menu(at least I do), so press any of theconsole buttons. Now press 1 on theMenu again,} and you get to see what youtyped, moving down and up! Notice how the Menu fades down off ofthe screen when you select an} option? To do this, press CTRL-INSERT andCTRL-* over and over, until you reachthe top. This will make it do the samething} as the Menu. Try typing all kindsof keys and any editing key foranimation, then go back in the Menufor--- C. } This option deletes your work frommemory. Before you do this, you will beasked "ARE YOU ?" If you are,} type'Y' and press RETURN. S. This option allows you to save yourwork to disk. Just enter the f}ilenameas follows: FILENAME.EXT. The info issaved just as a text file and it canbe manioulated just like any othertext fi}le can be. If you want a disk directory, justpress RETURN. If you don't want tosave anything right now, press CTRL-Qand }RETURN to go back to the main Menu.Note that your file will have a ClearScreen character (CHR$ 125) at thebeginning, so th }at the screen willclear when it is being shown. L. This is just like Save Graphics, butyou'll b }e loading it from disk. As itloads, it will be displayed, so youcan see what you've created. If you areunsure of the many }fine features of theSave option, review it immediately. T. 四 When you first typed your creation,di }d you get it right on the first try?Or did you have a lot of characters todelete that you didn't want? When you return to} look at your work, you see every keystroke that you made.Your work may have a perfect pictureafter all the keystrokes are }shown, butyou really don't like all of thosemistakes. Well, don't despair. TakePicture can make it look as if younever ma}de a mistake. Let's try all of it. Press 'T' andoff we go. The computer says, 'WHILEPICTURE IS BEING DISPLAYED, PRESS} TO SPEED UP, PRESS TOSLOW DOWN OR PRESS TO TAKEPICTURE'. I'll explain that later. 'DO YOU WANT TO COME U}P FROM THEBOTTOM', the computer asks. If youpress 'Y', then a CTRL-* will be addedto the beginning of the picture, causing} it to be displayed from thebottom, scrolling up from here on in.I want mine to, so I answer 'Y'. 'TAKE PICTURE OF LAST F}RAME?' comesup next. If, after the last characterthat you typed, you have a file thatyou wish to save, press 'Y'. I, fort}he sake of demonstration, do not. The computer clears the screen andstarts printing all the charactersthat I typed, the s}ame way I typedthem. The characters are coming out alittle slowly, so I press , andthings speed up a little. I see} that the word SUE is about tofinish printing out (in large letters). For the sake of demonstration, I onlywant this to say} SUE, so I press ԛand hold it down until the charactersare coming out very slowly. The verylast corner of the E comes} out, and Ipress . The screen turns BLACK andgets lighter and lighter, until it'sWHITE. This takes a little time, but}not much. The Take Picture option has done itsjob, and it returns me to the Menu. Ipress 'A', and SUE come out from left}to right, top to bottom. There are nomistakes, and it looks quite nice. But what happened to '+ FRANK' youask? A few day}s ago, I saved them todisk without the SUE. This is perfect, because I can now show you how to----- G. } I know you don't have '+ FRANK' savedon disk, so you can just read this forthe sake of demonstration. I hit 'G'an}d something similar to 'Load ScreeN'shows up. If you're unsure of what'load a screen' is, review the 'L'section immediatel}y. I press RETURN,because I forgot what filename I used. Okay, there is is: ANDFRANK.LGO 024.I type ANDFRANK.LGO. The com }puterappears to be loading in the logo likenothing out of the ordinary. But,actually, it has taken out the clearcharacter!}---it takes out the firstcharacter from the file. It has finished its job and sends meback to the Menu, where I belong. I"}nreview, you could say that the AppendGraphics adds a logo onto the end ofyour logo from disk. K. #} Some people like 38-column mode, butif you're like me, you want those extratwo spaces for your masterpiece. Youhave a$} choice. Just press 'K' and makeyour choice. You may want to save your logos withan extender that reminds you of thecol%}umn mode. For example, SUENFRNK.40or RENEE.38. A logo that was made in40-column may or may not look so goodin 38-column, a&}nd vice-versa. If you'd like to customize yourprogram to be 40-column without havingto press 'K' and choose the mode ever'}yday when you load ATASCII Animation, this is what you do: change thevariable in line 130 to read LM=C0.That will set the (}left margin at 0instead of 2. D. 䛛 This has absolutely nothing to dowith 38/40 column. I)}f your current workis coming out well and, by mistake, you press - instead of CTRL-*, you'lluse this option. Actually, an*}y time you type acharacter that you don't want duringContinue Make Screen, you can use 'D'on the Menu to erase forever the+} lastcharacter that you typed. That concludes the Menu options fortoday. Feel free to review any optionsthat you don't q,}uite understand. ǠŬ٠ӛ I use ATASCII Animation a lot formaking those letters. Once you get-} thehang of it, thry're quite easy. Theyare mainly based upon the controlcharacters (O W E R A S D Z X C, andSHIFT-=). No.}tice that they includeevery 90-degree angle and everystraight line. With these, you canmake up any kind of square or lette/}r. It may take a bit of practice, butit can be done! I always make them ininverse, so they stand out better.qUsing "Animate.Bas": -------------------- Previously, callers to the "Text-Movie Warehouse" could download a tiny progra1}m called "Showwer", that I wrote in Atari Basic, to display the Atascii movies downloaded there. Unfortunately, the program 2}loaded files agonizingly slowly. Fortunately, a superior Atascii edit/display program called "Animate" was donated to th3}e site by Bruce Willard. His program loads Atascii files far faster than my old program, and displays them at a decent speed4} as well; while still providing enough memory for even the largest movie files. (Atari Emulator users may find the progra5}m a bit slow on all but the fastest PC's. Try PC-Xformer in "turbo" mode.) To run "Animate" from your Atari 400/800/XL/XE6} or emulator, you must have Basic installed and the disk (or virtual disk file) in one of your Atari disk drives. From the 7}Basic "Ready" prompt type RUN "D1:ANIMATE.BAS" (change the "1" to the proper drive number if necessary), and follow the on 8}screen instructions. The documentation for "Animate" is an animated Atascii file as well, and can be viewed by loading it9} into "Animate" like any other movie, using menu item #4. If you have any other questions regarding use of "Animate.Bas",:} you may Email the author, Bruce Willard, at: bwillard@mindspring.com Questions regarding use of the different emulators ;}should be directed to their respective authors. Questions regarding the "Text-Movie Warehouse" web site specifically sho<}uld be directed to me at ambrosia@flash.net. Movie donations are eagerly accepted, and you will receive full recognition for=} your contribution. Have fun!
