To maintain accurate and detailed records you simply have to spend a few minutes each week &}entering the scores. As soon as the scores are entered the program takes care of all the record keeping detai&}ls. In addition to a comprehensive weekly standing sheet, a variety of detailed reports can be printed&} at any time. The program is written in TURBO BASIC which is a public domain basic interpreter by &}Frank Ostrowski. The interpreter is included on the BOWLING ASSISTANT program disk. -R--E--Q&}--U--I--R--E--D- -E--Q--U--I--P--M--E--N--T- ATARI XL or&} XE computer with 64K RAM. ATARI 1050 disk drive. Maximum of 218 bowlers. Maximum of 12 bowlers per team. Maximum of 8 bowlers on eac&}h team bowling each week. Maximum of 124 substitute bowlers (depends on league size). 2, 3, or 4 game ser&}ies. Handles intramural teams. Supports scratch or individual handicap leagues. Separate scorin&}g options for men and women. Supports match point leagues. Computes handicaps and averages for teams and &}individuals. Handles forfeits, absentee and vacancy scores. Statistics maintained for teams and individua&}ls. If desired individual stats are maintained by sex. Many options for league modification at any po&}int during season.PT PAGE 4 - BOWLING ASSISTANT - VERSION 2T &} Reports available are: Weekly Standing Sheet Weekly Team Record Weekly B&}owler Record Current Team Summary Current Bowler Summary Current Ranking L&}ist for any STAT Team Rosters League Setup and Scoring Data Bowling Schedu&}le The program does not handle split seasons. The program can still be used to do each half of th&}e split season with a simple comparison of the results of both halves to compute the final statisti&}cs. This is a feature I hope to incorporate in the next version. I have not included it in t&}his or prior versions due to problems with the capacity of the disk to store the statistics for both halves of th&}e split season. -G--E--T--T--I--N--G- -S--T--A--R--T--&}E--D- Before starting to work with the bowling assistant, it is a good idea to make a &} working copy of the BOWLING ASSISTANT program disk. This can be done by using the DOS Duplicate &}Disk function, which is option J on the DOS menu. Alternately the excellent public domain disk copying program, &} US COPIER, which is provided on the BOWLING ASSISTANT program disk can be used. See the index to locate t&}he directions for loading and using US COPIER. The copy of the program disk should have the following&} files: DOS.SYS DUP.SYS AUTORUN.SYS - Turbo Basic interpreter AU&}TORUN.BAS - BOWLING ASSISTANT loader RAMDISK.COM - Sets ram disk for 130XE LOADER.COM - Loa&}der for USCOPIER USCOPIER.EXE - US COPIER program BOWLMAIN.BAS - BOWLING ASSISTANT - Main Modul&}e BOWLRPTS.BAS - BOWLING ASSISTANT - Report Module BOWLING.DOC - this documentation &} Put your master disk away and only use your working copy. If anything should happen to your working cop&}y you can always follow the above procedure again to prepare another copy from your master disk.&}PT PAGE 5 - BOWLING ASSISTANT - VERSION 2T Place the working copy of the &}BOWLING ASSISTANT program disk in drive 1 and turn on the computer while holding the OPTION key down.&} The program will load automatically. The program is completely menu driven and quite user friendly. &} You should be able to use the program without ever having to refer to this documentation. After loading, t&}he program always asks if the data disk is in drive 1. If you have not started a data disk for the lea&}gue or want to start a new league, answer (N)o to this question. If the number is zero, you will '&}not be able to run some of the reports until data is entered. IMPORTANT - To properly close the ''}data disk you must always exit the program by selecting 0 (finished) from the MAIN MENU. '(} -D--A--T--A- -D--I--S--K- -B--A--C--K--U--P- To pro')}tect the investment in time that you've made in setting up the league and entering data, it is strongly '*} advised to backup the data disk each week. If this seems too time consuming to do each week then consider '+}doing it every other or every third week. If something happens to render the data disk unusable, yo',}u will either have to start all over and re-enter all the league set-up information and the results'-} to date or use the backup diskette and enter the data needed to bring the backup diskette up to date. A backup ca'.}n be made by using the DOS Duplicate Disk function, which is option J on the DOS menu. Alternately th'/}e excellent public domain disk copying program, US COPIER, which is provided on the BOWLING ASSISTANT '0}program disk can be used. See the index to locate the directions for using US COPIER. If as you'1} exit the program by selecting 0 on the main menu, you indicate that you want to back up the data disk, you wil'2}l be requested to place the program disk in the drive. Once you press return a loader for US COPIER w'3}ill run. You will see a screen with the name USCOPIER beside the number 0. Press 0 and USCOPIER will '4}be loaded. If you use any other disk copying program, be sure it can copy all the 1023 sectors on '5} the data disk used by the program. Some disk copying programs only copy 720 sectors and you may lose some'6} data. Be sure to label the backup disk with the date of the backup. This will let you know how'7} much data you would have to re-enter to bring the backup up to date. At a minimum you should have two '8}backup diskettes which you alternate with each backup, i.e. use backup disk 1 for the first backup, '9} disk 2 for the second, disk 1 for the third, disk 2 for the fourth, etc.PT PAGE':} 10 - BOWLING ASSISTANT - VERSION 2T -L--E--A--G--U--E- -C--H--A-';}-N--G--E--S- A wide variety of changes can be made in the league at any time durin'<}g the season. Bow'>}lers who are replaced are retained on the sub roster. Subs can be added or dropped. It is not advisa'?}ble to drop a sub who has bowled during the season unless the maximum number of subs has been reached. '@} Dropping a sub who has bowled will create difficulties when reports try to retrieve the bowling data 'A} for this sub. The schedule for upcoming weeks can be changed. Alley numbers can be changed. Pho'B}ne no.'s, sex or entering averages for players can be changed. Scoring options can be changed bu'C}t the changes will only apply to data entered after the change is made. If you need to make a basic 'D}change in the scoring options, e.g. the scratch score, and have it apply to all the results for the season then y'E}ou will have to start over and re-enter all the data. -E--N--T--E--R--I--N-'F}-G- -T--H--E- -W--E--E--K--L--Y- -R--E--S--U--L--T--S- 'G} You will first be asked whether all frames were bowled by all players this week. If any players d'H}id not complete all the frames to be bowled in any game, answer (N)o to this question. If you answer 'I}no or are not sure, you will be asked for each player whether all frames were bowled as the scores'J} are entered. The data entry screen resembles very closely the scoring sheets which are filled out 'K}during bowling. The name of the team is displayed and you are asked if the team bowled. If you answe'L}r N, the team is assumed to have forfeited. If you answer Y, you will be presented with the names of each bowler'M} on the roster. Answer (N)o until the name of the next bowler on the lineup is presented. For match p'N}oint leagues the order of the lineup is important and should be entered just as it is listed on the s'O}coring sheet. Once you answer Y, you will be asked if the bowler was absent. If you answer (Y)es'P} then the absentee score is used, otherwise enter the scores for each game which was bowled. Check the'Q} results entered carefully before you indicate that they are OK. If you answer (N)o for each bowle'R}r on the roster who has not bowled, then you will have the opportunity for indicating whether a current s'S}ub or new sub bowled. If a new sub bowled, then enter the name of the sub. The name of the sub 'T}will not be found on the data disk and the program will request the name, sex, and average of the new sub. I'U}f a sub bowled then carefully enter the name of the sub (the spellingPT PAGE 11 - BOWLING AS'V}SISTANT - VERSION 2T must exactly match the name as previously entered), and then enter the scores for'W} each game which was bowled. The sum displayed below the scores is the sum plus handicap for 'X}each game. The total handicap for the team is also listed below the scores. The total handicap and the 'Y} sums provide a good check on the arithmetic on the sheets and the data entered. This procedur'Z}e is repeated for each bowler on each team. Be sure to check over the data entry screen for errors each '[} time the program asks you if the data is OK. This is your opportunity to correct errors. Your last chance to'\} make a change is when the data entry screen is all filled in for each each bowler on the two teams']}. Once you indicate that this screen is OK, the program proceeds to the next match on the schedule a'^}nd you will not be able to edit the data on the previous screen. The only way to correct an error discovered '_} after you have indicated that the data entry screen is OK is to proceed from the last backup disk or start th'`}e league all over again. Once all the data is entered for the week, it is proces'a}sed by the program. The data processing can take some time to complete, so be patient. -R--E-'b}-P--O--R--T--S- From the MAIN MENU you can choose to run a weekly standi'c}ng sheet or other specialized reports. If you choose to run the special reports, you will be requested to pla'd}ce the program disk in the drive. The special reports module will then be loaded and you will be able'e} to select the report of interest from the menu presented. Some reports will require your selectin'f}g the range of data to be printed in the report, e.g. which week, which teams, which bowlers, etc. So'g}me of the reports will require some time to run due to the high level of disk access and searching required. Plea'h}se be patient, you are using your microcomputer to run a significant database application whi'i}ch would take some time to complete even on today's speedy "386" machines. To run any of these repo'j}rts you must have a printer connected as part of the disk drive daisy chain. The program assumes that 'k} the printer width is 80 columns and the only control character used is a form feed (ASCII 12) to ad'l}vance the printer to a new page. The standing sheet allows you to compose a bulletin of 'm} up to 16 lines to be printed on the standing sheet. This feature can be used to communicate coming events or'n} highlight a person or team's performance or any other information. If you choose not to use this featu'o}re, simply erase the bulletin and it will not be printed. If you want to enter a bulletin then proceed 'p}to edit it. Enter each line the way you want itPT PAGE 12 - BOWLING ASSISTANT - VERSION 2T 'q} to appear on the standing sheet. Blank lines will be skipped when the bulletin is printed. Editing of the lines 'r}is fairly natural. Backspace to correct errors. Control shifted up and down arrows to change lines. 's} Control shifted left and right arrows to move around the line. There is no insert mode. You mus't}t overtype to correct mistakes. Each line is 64 characters and is split into two lines on the editing 'u} screen. There is no word wrap between lines.
