Do this: Build a circle on the screen incolor 2 (press 2, then C for circle. put the first point !@}in the middle of thescreen, and the second about 3/4 the way up from the bottom). Make sure thecursor is inside the circle !A}before you start filling! Now. Press 3 and F. SM2will switch to color 3 and fill the circle with it (the fill is slow becaus!B}eof the storing of the lines, the DLIs in the background, and the highresolution mode the screen is in). Wasn't that neat? !C}Not impressed? Well,we'll see 'bout that! Press 4 for color 4, R for repeat fill (we will not filla new area, but use the s!D}tored pattern from the floodfill we just did to drawa pattern OVER the filled area) and 5. The character after the 5 is any!E}Atascii key from 32 to 95. Each valid key has it's own pattern assigned to it.The numbers from 1 to 9 approximate a tone sca!F}le you can use to mix colorswith. 5 is a 50%/50% mix of the NEW color (color 4) and the old background(color 3 in this case!G}). The result should be a checkered pattern inside thecircle. You can choose different colors and different patterns by pres!H}sing thecolor number (if you wish to change it), then R (Repeat last fill) and thepattern key. If you want to explore all t!I}he patterns, feel free; there are 64different ones! On the other hand, if you want to change them, or just lookat them all !J}at once, just use your favorite character set editor (make sureit can handle GRAPHICS 1 & 2 character sets. I personally lov!K}e "The Next Step"from On-line, but most any will do). Just load the file SM.SET and there it is! Designer fill takes that !L}idea one step farther. In one swell foop, it 1:does a floodfill on the area you indicate with a color different than thebac!M}kground (this is to find the extent of that area), Repeat fills it withit's original color solid (restore the area to the wa!N}y it was before thefloodfill), and Repeat fills again with the correct color and pattern key.Whew! Complicated, eh? Try a f!O}ew small circles or box outlines and see how itdoes the job! Alternating fill is a solution to a problem I was having with!P} MicroPainter:What if you want to fill over a patterned area? MicroPainter doesn'tunderstand that the pattern is actually a!Q} pattern, just looks like a series ofvery small areas to fill. Well, the solution is here. Alternating fill willalternatly !R}fill an area with 2 colors. This will quickly eat away most simplepatterns, and a combination of several different Alternati!S}ng fills will clearaway even the toughest patterns! When the Alternating fill has done enough, just tap the space bar and it!T} will quit when the fill finishes. Beware, though! An Alternating fill can get out of hand! if left unchecked is will destroy!U}your drawing as quickly as it erases a pattern, so beware! A few caveats about the fill software exists. If the area you t!V}ry to storeinto memory is too big, the program will do one of three things depending onwhat fill you were in at the time: F!W}loodfill, it will stop dead, so you canerase it with Repeat fill, or continue by doing other floodfills. Alternatingfill, c!X}ontinue. It assumes that you want to clean up the area anyway, so itchugs along. Designer fill, will stop, erase any changes!Y} it made, restoringthe screen to where it was before the fill started. Also, if the fill's stackspace gets too crowded the !Z}screen display will crash. This is remedied bypressing ESC and entering the EDIT mode again. Just remember to break upcompl![}icated fills into smaller pieces, by putting small blocks in the way orwhatever. Kitty Corner is my way of -}having you specify a rectangle for me to do something to. When Kitty Corner is mentioned, here's what you do: move th-}e blinking cursor to one corner of the rectangle and press the button. Then move the cursor to the diagonally opposite -}(how about diametrically disinclined) corner and again press the button. In some cases you may need to do this again-} for a second rectangle. Box outline: Kitty Corner a rec- tangle and the rectangle will be outlined using the current b-}rush pattern on the pc.B - Filled box Draws a solidly filled area colored in the pc. use Kitty Corner to denote your-} rectangle.C - Circle C also uses Kitty Corner. The first point will be the center of the circle, the second will be o-}n the circumfrence. The circle will be drawn using the current brush and the pc. Note: the circle is only circular on-} the screen! The actual height/width ratio is 100/57.I - Pixel increment Specify a Kitty Corner, and the computer will-} add 1 to every pixel color value in the rectangle. Note: Pixel incrementing the same box four times will return it to-} it's original condition.R - Repeat last fill R is used in conjunction with both D (designer fill) and F (flood fill).-} R uses the same Line Buffer data for another pattern or color. It can be used to restore an erroneous fill to its las-}t color.X - Expand Gr.7 This is useful only to expand some pictures saved in Gr.7 format. X enlarges the top half of t-}he screen to full size.A - Alternating fill A will prompt you for entry of two colors. It will then repeatedly do a -}flood fill at the present cursor location with each color you specified in rapid succesion. Stop it by pressing any key-}. Note: this has the same rules as the flood fill for complex areas.E - Exchange colors E asks you for the old color, -}then needs a Kitty Corner. E will check each pixel in the box to see if it is the same as the old color, if so, It wi-}ll change the pixel to the pc.<> - Change brushes Either < or > will change your brush pattern. The brushes are 9x9 arra-}ys of a pattern, which is used quite frequently throughout the program. To change the shape of a brush, press 'M' at -}the main menu screen+ - Expand/Contract + will take a rectangle of any (KISS, keep it small, stupid) size and expand o-}r contract it to fit any other sized rectangle. Use two Kitty Corners to specify the two rectangles.= - Block copy D-}enote a Kitty Cornered rectangle and an UPPER LEFT corner of the destination area. A equalivalently sized copy will be -}transferred to the end zone.$ - About the author: This is me. Sean M. Puckett 693 n.w. 11 st.
