Blood IVReprinted - JACS 6/86 IssueBroderbund's Print Shop is a powerfulprogram which 3}allows you to easilycreate cards, banners and signs, although it does have a fewlimitations. Broderbund failed toinclude 4}a way of deleting unwantedcreations. Broderbund also decided toinvent their own method of storing andretrieving files, ra5}ther than usingthe standard Atari (DOS 2.0S) diskfile structure. While Broderbund has included almostevery conceivable op6}tion necessary tocreate printed matter, they lacked theforesight to envision Print Shop beingused for anything except crea7}tingfancy stationery. My program, ARTSHOP, extends the usefulness of PrintShopby adding several features, allowing it to 8}be used as a videodisplay tool. ART SHOP will convertback and forth between Print Shop'sScreen Magic files (which are sto9}redwith "Print Shop" DOS) and Datasoft'sMicro-Painter (or compatible) files(which are stored with Atari DOS2.0S). ART SH:}OP also provides youwith a method of manipulating PrintShop data by deleting files, renamingfiles, listing file names on a;} printerand formatting disks.By giving you the flexibility toconvert pictures between Print Shopand Micro-Painter, the v<}alue of eachprogram is considerably enhanced. Some new possibilities include:* Add colors and patterns to yourScreen Mag=}ic files, by loading theconverted picture into Micro-Painter.* Superimpose captions onto picturesyou've already created >}withMirco-Painter, by loading theconverted picture into Print Shop.* Add captions to digitized picturesyou've stored wi?}th Computer Eyes videoacquisitions system, by loading theminto Print Shop. The final imagecould then be printed on transf@}erpaper and ironed onto a t-shirt!* Create colorful title screensequences for movies you record withyour VCR, by turninA}g Print Shop filesinto Micro-Painter files. Thesescreens could then be displayed orfurther manipulated by anothergraphicB}s program. How to use ART SHOPART SHOP was designed to veryuser-friendly. Menu's are usedextensively in this program. C}Theprogram automatically checks for thecorrect type of disk (Print Shop orDOS format) before reading from orwriting to thD}e disk. Any errors willbe displayed briefly, and the programwill restart itself. Most of theprompts can be entered with E}a singlekey press - the key is notneeded except when answering Yes/Noquestions.After running the program, you sF}houldbe starting at the main menu witheight choices. Enter a number between1 and 8. If 8 is entered, the programends anG}d returns you back to BASIC'sReady prompt.(1.) DELETE PRINT SHOP FILEAfter this selection is made, you areprompted to H}enter the type of PrintShop file to delete. Screen Magicfiles consist of an entire Graphics 8screen and require 61 sectorI}s on thedisk. Graphics are the images (icons)used on cards, banners and signs -they require only 5 disk sectors. After yJ}ou have entered 1 or 2, you areasked to enter the drive whichcontains the Print Shop data disk. The disk is immediately cheK}cked toverify it is a Print Shop disk. Ifthe drive was not available, or if was hit instead of a drivenumber, thL}e program simply re-runsitself. If the disk drive did notcontain a Print Shop disk, you areagain asked for the source driM}venumber.A directory of all the Print Shopfiles (of the type you previouslyselected) is now displayed. Selectthe file N}you want to delete bypressing the corresponding letter(uppercase, non-inverse letters only). If more than 18 files exist onO} thedisk, then you may press toview the remaining names. Yourselection is displayed and you areasked to confirmP} your choice. If youwant to delete the file, hit 'Y'followed by the key. Thefile is read and the directoryinfoQ}rmation is erased. Once'OPERATION COMPLETED' is dispayed, youare free to swap disks. The programwill automatically re-ruR}n itself afterit has completed this function, orafter you responded with a 'N'.Since the program is basicallyself-documeS}nting, I will just brieflyexplain the remaining six menuoptions. Please remember, do notremove the disk from the drive unT}til'OPERATION COMPLETE' or an errormessage is displayed.(2.) PRINT SHOP => MICRO-PAINTERThis operation will convert PrU}int ShopScreen Magic files to Micro-Painterfiles. After answering severalquestions, you will be prompted for adestinatioV}n file name. You must usefile names which are legal under AtariDOS 2.0S. If no file name is entered- only is prW}essed, then thesource file name is also used for thedestination file name.Disk swapping instructions will bedisplayed, aX}nd the picture is loadeddirectly into screen memory. Afterthe tone has sounded, you may insertyour DOS formatted disk andY} hit. The picture is saved andyou are returned to the main menu.(3.) MICRO-PAINTER => PRINT SHOPThis operatioZ}n converts Micro-Painterpictures to Print Shop Screen Magicfiles. The procedure is similar tothe above operation. You ar[}e allowedto use the same file name for a ScreenMagic file and a Graphic file - theyare identified separately on the disk.\}If you etered the same file name asone already existing on thedestination disk, then the old file isautomatically replaced]} with the newone.(4.) FORMAT MICRO-PAINTER DISKThis operation simply formats astandard DOS disk in drive 1.(5.) FOR^}MAT PRINT SHOP DISKThis is a quick way of formatting aPrint Shop data disk without poweringdown and booting up Print Shop_}.(6.) LIST PRINT SHOP DIRECTORYThis function lists all the ScreenMagic or Graphic file names to theprinter. If you wa`}nt to simply viewthe directory, then select option 7.When you are prompted for a new filename, then just hit .(7a}.) RENAME PRINT SHOP FILEThis selection will allow you torename any Print Shop file.SidenotesArt Shop is well protectb}ed againstuser errors, although the keywill still interrupt the program. Ididn't trap out this key in case someoc}f you wanted to step through ormodify this program. If you want toexperiment with this program, Isuggest preparing a testd} disk to workwith (Make a back-up copy - Ed.).This program directly reads from andwrites to the disk without the aid ofDOe}S. One error in this program willalmost guarantee a scrambled disk. When using selection 2, if you don'tenter a DESTINATIf}ON file name, thesource file name is used without the'.MIC' extension. Under selection 3,only the Micro-Painter files witg}h the'.MIC' extension are displayed. Thismeans if you convert a Print Shop fileinto a Micro-Painter file and don'tenter q}@?B%DOS SYSB*)DUP SYSBDSPGRAPHS DOCBYPSPRINT OBJJOYSTIK MAC!KOALAPADMACBSARTSHOP BASB<2ARTSHOP DOCB0wPACKTOOLOBJB$PSFCONV BASBPSFLOAD BASBiSHOPTOOLOBJBK:PSPIC OBJBPSPIC DOCBAUTORUN SYSBDOC TXTBDOCREAD BASa destination file name, thenyou cannot convert it back withoutfirst adding the '.MIC' extension tothe file name.Since tr}he Print Shop's Screen Magicfiles are all displayed in full-screenGraphics 8, no color information isneeded (or saved) wits}h the picture. When you convert this type of pictureinto Micro-Painter format (4-color)then this color information becomest}useful. Since a few graphics programsneed this color information, I simplyadded the Atari's default colors ontothe end ofu} the picture. You may wantto substitute your own colors intolines 500 and 510 (PEEK 708, 709, 710,712). Good luck and env}joy.ay wantto substitute your own colors intolines 500 and 510 (PEEK 708, 709, 710,712). Its purpose is to give you access to Print Shop's fancy hi-resolution text and graphics. PSPI6}C.OBJ will load a Print Shop SCREEN MAGIC file into memory as a graphics mode 8 screen. It will then let you overlay Print Sh6}op GRAPHIC files anywhere on that screen. The resulting screen can then be saved as a 62 sector picture file, which can be6} accessed by any standard graphics utility such as Graphics Master, KoalaPainter, etc..USING PSPIC.OBJ Files ca6}n be loaded from Print Shop data disks or from Print Shop GRAPHICS LIBRARY disks. Insert a disk which contains Print Shop 6}files into drive 1 and press 'L'(load). You will see the first filename in the directory. Use the space bar to step t6}hrough the files. As the filenames are printed on the screen, the file type(screen magic/graphic) will be indicated. Whe6}n you see the file you want, press .LOADING SCREEN MAGIC FILES When you load a screen magic file, the scree6}n will be cleared and the picture will be loaded into memory. Press any key to go back to the main menu.LOADING PRINTS6}HOP GRAPHIC FILES When you load a Print Shop graphic file, the following things will happen. 1. You will be asked for t6}he X and Y coordinates which will be used to place the graphic on the screen. Typing in response to either promp6}t will set that coordinate to zero. 2. If you have already loaded one or more files into memory, you will see the followi6}ng prompt."Clear or Existing screen?"Typing 'C' will erase the screen in memory while typing 'E' will not. 3. If you re6}spond with 'E', you will see another prompt."Overlay(Y/N)?"Responding with 'N' will erase the area under the graphic wh6}en the graphic is loaded. Typing 'Y' will not. 4. The graphic will be placed on the screen at the specified coordinate6}s. Press any key to return to the main menu.SAVING FILES To save a screen, type 'S' from the main menu. Make sure 6} you have a disk that has been formatted with Atari DOS in drive 1. The name of the last file you have loaded will be pri6}nted on the screen. You can enter a new filename or type to use the name of the last file loaded.CAUTION! Print S6}hop file names may contain characters which are not allowed in Atari filenames. Make sure to delete any such characters.6} I hope you enjoy using this program. If you have any questions or comments, please leave me a message.MIKE<74005,4756}> I hope you enjoy using this program.
