Chiko using CLSN Pascal Version 1.0 copyI}right 1993It is after midnight when the toe of your commanding officer's boot firmlynudges you from sleep. ThepersistJ}ent drizzle can be be heard onthe tent as you slowly attempt tobring yourself to full awareness. With a few sparse words yK}ou areordered to navigate a mine field. The damp mulch beneath your feetabsorbs you footfalls as youcautiously make yourL} way toward yourtarget. As you go, his wordscontinue to go through your head justlike the cool dampness of nightthrough M}your flak jacket.Intelligence reports indicate thatthere is an enemy mine field cuttingoff our retreat through the gorge.N} It is only 13 meters wide and 8meters deep and contains 10 thermo-nuclear mines. You must mark all ofthe mine locationsO} as quickly aspossible so that the company can getthrough the gorge without incident. The newest detection equipment cansP}how you where a mine may be hidden,but it is up to you to make the finaldecision to mark it or not.It is just before sunrQ}ise when youarrive at the gorge and the minefield. As you survey the mist-shrouded terrain, you hesitantlythumb the mineR} detector on with abarely audible click. The displayshows a grid of 104 square metersand confirms that there are 10 minesS}hidden somewhere in it. Then, asalways, you take the first tentativesteps out onto the field knowing fullwell that you mT}ay turn instantly intodust. You silently pray that luckand intuition have not abandoned youon this day.System RequireU}ments:* 130XE or compatible (Note: not all XL memory upgrades are compatible with the 130XE)* optional joystickOV}bjective:The object of the game is to mark allof the mines in the grid in theshortest amount of time. The gridmeasures W}13 by 8 and can have from 10to 32 mines randomly placed in it. By using the joystick or keyboard,cells in the grid can be X}exposed ormarked as being mined. To help youdecide which cells contain mines, thegame will display a value between 1and Y}8 in each cell next to a mine. When the mines are placed into thegrid, each immediately adjacent cellvalue is incremented,Z} provided thatit does not contain a mine.When cells are exposed, 3 things canhappen. The most immediate is yourinstanta[}neous vaporiaztion. Luckyfor you this is only a game. Thesecond is that a number isdisplayed. This value tells you the\}number of mines that can be found inthe immediately adjacent cells. Thethird thing is that the selected cellis clear. If]} you are fortunateenough to have this happen, the gamewill continue to expose cells untilall cells without mines adjacent ^}tothe initial selection are exposed.Game Play:The game can be broken into twodistinct parts. The first part isthe s_}etup phase. It is during thisphase that the number of mines in thegrid can be changed. It is also fromthis phase of the `}program that a gameis started. And it is from thisphase that the program can be exited.Starting a game will result in a na}ewgrid being constructed, the number ofgames played incremented, the clockreset and entering phase two. Thestart of thisb} portion of the game isindicated by three tones beingsounded.In the second phase of the game, thecursor can be moved, thc}e cells in thegird can be exposed or marked, andthe game marked as completed.In either phase of the game, thecommands cad}n be entered from thekeyboard or the joystick. Therefore,it is important that you know whichphase the program is in, since}ejoystick stick commands are phase andscreen position sensitive. Aftera c}}ell is marked as mined, marking ita second time will change that markto a pole without a flag. The numberof marked cells ~}is also decremented. Marking the cell a third time returnsthe cell to its original state, i.e.not marked and covered.S}coring:The scoring is performed at the endof a game in which you did notfiguratively turn yourself to dust. The best tim}e, in other words, theshortest time with the greatestnumber of placed mines will resultin your statistics being moved into}the "Best" category. The game numberyou achieved your best time, thenumber of mines placed and the timeare all displayed} on the right sideof the screen in the text window. It is possible to have a short time,but not get into the best column,}because the best time alreadydisplayed had more mines placed inthe grid.Since I've taken the time andresource to explod}e you when youstep on a mine, I've also decided toreward you when you win. In caseyou can not recognize the tune, itis t}he refrain from The Battle Hymnof the Republic.Playing Tips:I have found that it really does notmatter where game pla}y starts. Iusually pick the corners. I look foran excessive number of corners andbuild by marking and exposing cellsin }this area first. In other words,build on knowledge and do not takewild guesses as to the positions ofthe mines.The othe}r thing I will tell you isthat, contrary to popular belief,patterns do present themselves wherethe mine's location is not }known. It means that, at times, you willhave to guess at the location of amine. But in many situations, ifenough cells h}ave been exposed, themines' locations can be deduced. Butremember, building on incorrectassumptions can lead to thedeton}ation of a mine. In this gamenothing is ever known with absolutecertainty.If you are having trouble getting thehang of }the game, remember to set thenumber of placed mines to a lowvalue. As you gain experience withthe program, then you can i}ncreasethe number of mines placed on thegrid. However, the process of makingthat first correct selection willbecome all }the more difficult. If104 cells becomes too easy, tryMINESWP2, which has 208 cells and upto 80 mines. Or, perhaps tryMI}NESWP3, with side-by-side game playon two 96 cell grids. =pE:Sح)p өjt2t tp B VL®pBqDE JK VL©!}`uA#"P` ~#Յ` ~#ʆՆ` ~#` ~#ʆ`ӹ 'Ӡ` H% P#L# H% Z#L!}# H% i#L# H% q#L# H% ~#L# H% ~#L# S#L#Ԇ l#L#ֆՅL#ԆL#ԩ  $өӹ` H%H h !}$`  $`ӹ 'Ӡ ` H% 7$Ș $өӬ`Hh $H !}$Ɖ $h`Ӥ 'ӤL$ӤL$`8刅剅 8儥児`L^1!} Hӹ 'h` b%֦ե` ^%ե` Hөӱh h&`ӹ 'Ӡ!}`  %`ӹ 'ӬԈԎ`өӠ ӢȘ h&`HhHH ,&Ɖ!} .&hh l&`өӤLB& 'ӤL\&`ee` b% + H%L% b% + H%L% b% !}+ H%L#% f% H%L)% % H%L% % H%L%HH +hh &Ɖ &`Ӥ 'ӤL&ֹ 'ӤL'Ԉ!}Ԏ`@  fڰ` `ڰ` ڰ ` (۰`L^1L^1w'x' #8w'x' %`#w'x'HH R%!} R%mw'mx'hhleԊeթL# b% (,L#HH + <,hh ,ԦL' ( *L^1` b% +Ӥ!} 'ӠL# H%H 'Ӡ8ih` H%H 'Ӡih` b% -0 #8`` b%L+ !}`ԥՄ <,0 b% <, *`Lb% f% ( +L# b% /L# % (L`$ b%L# b%L# b%L#HH %hhL$H!}H b%hhԦդL$ b% -L# b% +L# f% +L# b% ,L# b% ,L# -L)$ + %Ԧ -L)$ b% % -L)$ + &.L)$ + v,L# + 9'L!}# + ,L# + ?'L# + B-L# + -L# + P,L# + \,L# + (,L# + -'L# + <,L# + 3'L# + .L)$ + L.L`$ + .L)$ + U-!}L# + h-L# % b% 5.L#` + <, *LE + <, *?8 + <,03 *.' + <,"0 + <,0 + <, *L#L#!} 3'` + *;4 + *1* + *0'% + *0 + *0 + *L#L# ` + *;4 +!} *1* + *'% + * + * + *L#L# +D0: +-0- +90 +9!}L#L# b% +Lb% f% Lf% % +L% % +L%`օՅԅ` ``I`8ԅ!}Յթօ`IԥIեI`H Dh`eԥeեe`8ԥե` h,` o,`&&`Ff!}f` :/ Dڢ h, / (,`ՅԅՅԢ&& eԥe``Fff`fff`` ,]օ +H8!} ,A- / , , , <, (,L+-A- 0/hE +`L^1%ԥ%ե%`ԥե`E!}ԥEեE``` # {- , - v, + b%L<,`֥``H)hJJJ%'`.!}... -.M..``Y`9`H)hJJJ=%'``m ʈ!}`L^1򩀅`0:`8` {.AG`8`&&`օՅԤ .80  .ԅ`8`Lؤ-.!}+`. .$ .  ذ u/ . +`&&```ԕ``u`!}6*`D<8@(i /- D/ /% / N/ ^/ N/ ^/ %/ 0/`8`H + /h +`H + u/!}h +` :/ D /uԕةCL!}D:MINESWPR.IMGS 0 000000 2ƥ`0`0`!}00x76X`0x76X`h@1 1H ' h` S9 A# 06Q<70600`Q<0 VHQ<Ɲ0h!}0`0Q<8hh8JE" R% R%8 A# # 0Q<Q<ʆȠ # 61 # Z$ 6 !}7 62 # Z$ 6 7 6 6 7 0l Error # at #LS' ' #LH% ` 2i ĩ0i` ' Z$ % %2!}Ĉ` ' 'ƅ #Lz& 20 00 0 42 ]2Ly'L^1 ' ' # H%` 2 2 2 2  2 !} 2 2Ʃ 0 %2 2ŝEĝDǝJB :1Ly'Ʃ 00 2"0 BL:1 2 2 2Ly'{a ` 2 2 *3Ԣֆթ!}Ly' 2 2 2 23ED)IJԝKB :1Ly'S:3m3 2Tm3 2UV` HIHBhL:1 2!}}W 3Ly' 2 3Ly' 2 3 2=4 3Ly' 2 3 2 3ԢֆթLy' 2 3=4 2 JKB :1Ly' 2!} 2=4Ly'ԐeԪʈ`L^1.)e԰% Խ8`ԍ`!}  ' Z$ % + ' # ' # + Ԑ0`L^1 2 4 P4Ly' 2 4 4Ly' b% +L# f%)L# b%!} + v,L# f% 9'L#L^1 b% -L# b% -L#Ǎ55 b%Hֽ ' 2՝EԝD5I5HǝB :1h` ' ' # H%!}Ʃ ' # ' #LH% 2 5 k5 2I5H5 Ly' 2 5 k5 Ly'ȄƠ Lk5 ݩL#HH b% 6hhL6HH f% 6h!}hL6L#HH % ;6hhL6HH % ;6hhL6-m6 2DEHI BL:1`L# H%666`6 6!}%60 86H `$h  b6 %` 6 b% /R< b%ԥR< 6 f% BL 7 6 %ȅ 6Lb6ȅ 2L3 6 H%!}L 7 6 b% Q7L 7FALSETRUEȄƠLk5ȩ0`ȅƪ0.0 2D7EHIB :1777`!} m7!}77`7e77` (8 . :8L#L^1 I8Lz& I8L& I8L& (8 . :8 #L&L^1 (877ɛ e7 #Lz& (8 !}۠ȱɛm777 `$L& (8ɛȘL#Ƚ0L# 2L+ 2 ' ' 8 `: # &Ly' 2 8H!}H ' ' # b%hh ;Ly'oөө@@<@ө`1<@ө`@é `H9 i!}`:өL^1™H9`H9ˆ`ii8倥偰 9`:ө L^1H908K9M9L9N9`H9֭J9խI9ԭH!}9 H9K9L9 9H9)H9I9eI9J9eJ9M9K9N9L9 K9 9`Ӎ: 9 9 9 9Ln: ::` 9 9H9%)Q9I9!}O9J9P9 9L:Q9H9`8`֍Q9ՍP9ԍO9 : 9`8ƅ;; Í;;ˆ`Í;;`;í;` !}:I9mK9O9J9mL9P9 :+K9Q9L9R9 : ; 9K9mQ9K9L9mR9L9 9 ;` 9 9H9%)I9mK9J9mL9 9Ld; ;` *!}H : ; a;h`L^1 2H D 9 9H90mK9ԥmL9 9L;hөLy' 2H D 9 9H908K9!}ԭL9ՐՆ 9L=L< 2 < ݰ-L< 2 < ްL< 2 ' # f% / Ly'L^1 2 ' # f% >= / Ly' 2 < !}=L< 2 < =L< 2 < r=L< 2 < >L<)8?Ք FکLfLܩ)@0)!})Ԡߢ ޠ (`$)e>i (ې`8!})@0+bՅ)e)e ݦ `F ݢ> `ڠw @ݠ`D'R!}FuCP?b9dYd`@W2@?tS)%@@e8`0?i (۩E< ݢb? `ڢE< ڢK< !} ݢE< (ۢK< `ڢl ڥK< fƢK< ݥ"8@Ji@)j `@Hֽ 'Ӡ !} Ԉh` 2 2 ' # ' # + h?
