Chiko with CLSN Pascal version 1.0!} copyright 1993System Requirements:* Atari 130XE or the equivalent Note: not all XL memory upgrades a!}re 130XE compatibleDistributed Files:* VQUIZCS.ED - the program used to build a quiz* VQUIZCS.HLP - program docume!}ntation for VQUIZCS.ED* *.VQ - VQUIZ data files generated by VQUIZCS.ED and used by VQUIZ.ED* VQUIZ.ED - !}the program used to take a quiz* VQUIZ.HLP - program documentation for VQUIZ.ED* RUN.UTL - menu program to la!}unch the *.ED programs or to display *.HLP files* RUN.CTL - data file used by program RUN.UTL* RUN.DOC - docu!}mentation for the program RUN.UTLDescription:VQUIZCS was designed to constructthe data files to be used by thecompa!}nion program VQUIZ. The actualquiz consists of 22 words dividedinto 2 columns of 11 fields displayedon the screen. At th!}e bottom of the screen arandomly selected definition isdisplayed. I believe this method ofdisplaying words is more effect!}ive inbuilding vocabulary, since it is muchmore difficult to weed out theobiviously incorrect answers. For example, in ot!}her programs ofthis nature, a definition isdisplayed along with a smallselection of choices, one of which iscorrect. In !}these games it does notalways require that you know thecorrect answer, but the wronganswers. Is this an effectivelearnin!}g tool? It is hard to say. But in this presentation all 22answers are displayed at once. Itbecomes much more difficult t!}o weedout the incorrect answers, which thenimplies that person taking the quizdoes indeed know the correct answer. The pr!}ogram comes with a samplevocabulary list. By using theconstruction set (VQUIZCS) othercustom lists may be built. Lists d!}onot have to be completed in onesession, but should be complete, i.e.have 22 words defined, before a quizis taken. The r!}andomizing functionof VQUIZ does not take into accountincomplete lists.Screen Layout:The screen is divided into 4sec!}tions. The top section is theprogram title line and copyrightnotice. The second section is themessage display. This is !}the areainto which VQUIZCS will place all ofits user directions, warnings, andcomments. The third section is themenu bar!}. The highlighted letters inthe menu bar are "hot", i.e., pressthe indicated letter and theassociated action is executed.!} Thefunction of each of the 4 menu barselections will be described in moredetail later. The fourth section isthe genera!}l purpose work area. Itwill be used to display the diskdirectories for loading files or todisplay the work area for build!}ingthe list of words and theirassociated definitions.Menu Bar:As mentioned earlier there are 4"hot" keys on the menu!} bar. Theletters "L", "S", "M", and "Q" arehighlighted in the words Load, Save,Maintain, and Quit. Each functionwill be!} described in more detailbelow.Quit - The Quit operation willterminate the execution of theprogram. Nothing fancy is do!}ne atthe time of program termination. Itwill not ask you to save the currentfile. It will not give you a secondchance t!}o change your mind aboutquiting. I will admit that this israther crude and perhaps if there issufficient demand for these!} featuresthey may be incorporated into afuture release. But at this timethis was the simpliest and mostexpedient way to !}end the program.Load - The Load operation is used toload an existing file into memory. The program will first examine the!}disk in drive #1 for all files withthe extender ".VQ". This list ofnames without the extender is thendisplayed on the sc!}reen and the firstentry is highlighted. By using thearrow keys (without pressing Shift orCntrl) the highlight (cursor) ca!}n bemoved. The program can displaymultiple pages of filenames. Anytimethe cursor moves past the top orbottom edges of t!}he screen sectionthe next page of filenames will bedisplayed. Once the desired file hasbeen highlighted simply press Retu!}rnto load the file. When thisoperation is complete the programreturns to the Main Menu.Maintain - The Maintain operatio!}nallows the existing file to bealtered or a new file to be created. Two work areas are created. To bemore exact two boxe!}s are drawn on thescreen. If a file has been loaded, the current word list is displayed. The cursor (highlight) is placed !}onthe first entry and the definitionfor that word is displayed in thesecond box at the bottom of thescreen. By using the!} arrow keys thecursor can be moved from word toword. If return is pressed thecurrent word can be edited or a newword can!} be entered.Press return a second time and thefirst line of the definition ishighlighted. The editor used toaccept you !}input is line oriented anddoes not perform word wrapping. Nordoes it behave in the standard IBMfashion. If there is text!} already inthe field, it will take a Shift Clearto clear the field. It does notperform an automatic clear when thefirst !}character is pressed. Nor doesthe editor allow inserts within thefield. It will backspace through thefield deleting char!}acters as you go. Pressing Return will indicate thatthe entry operation is done. Pressing Esc will indicate that theentry!} operation is to be aborted,i.e. the entry is null or empty. Youshould remember that this is an 8-bitmachine with limited!} resources andcompromises must be made. Theroutine used to get input recognizesthe left and right margins, allowsthe fie!}ld to prefilled, cleared withShift Clear, allows single charactersto be deleted with Backspace, allowsfor a null operation!}, and uses theReturn to indicate an end ofoperation. It also accepts data inupper or lower case. Yes, it couldhave poss!}ibly done more, but then therest of this program would have doneless. For example, the Load functionmay not have been abl!}e to display adirectory of files. I felt thelatter feature was more importantthan the former. The program allows a maxim!}um of 3lines of definition. As such, atleast a Return must be pressed foreach line. So, for example, if thedefinition i!}s one line long, it wouldbe entered and ended with a Return. However, 2 more Returns would berequired for the next two lin!}es,though the lines are going to beempty. The program then returns tothe word selection mode. At thistime pressing Esc !}will return you tothe main menu bar.Save - The Save operation does justthat, and perhaps a little more. This is your opp!}ortunity to changethe name of a file. When the Saveoption is selected a box will pop upwith the name of the current file,!} ifone was loaded earlier using the Loadoption or it will contain "D1:". Atthis time you can alter the contentsof the na!}me field. The name shouldnot contain an extender. Theextender is provided by the program. When the save is complete the !}programagain returns to the main menu bar. At this time, you may decide to Loadanother file or to Maintain theexisting fi!}le to customize it foranother individual and then Save itagain with a different name.Personal Observations:I told a f!}riend of mine about thisprogram and he expressed an interestin it. In the mean time, he used adatabase program to create !}afacsmilie of VQUIZ. The word listconsisted of the phonetic spelling ofthe word along with its usage. Forexample, he en!}tered the word as follows: com plete (v)However, he was able to define analternate character set which includethe v!}owels and consonants with thespecial symbols. Perhaps this can bean future enhancement to theprogram. His program was li!}mited todisplaying a word and the definitionof the previous word on the screen atthe same time. There was no quizcompone!}nt to the program. However, Imay add a feature where the words inthe quiz program may be reviewedwithout taking the quiz.!}Mailing Address:Your suggestions and comments will beappreciated or if you are having aproblem with VQUIZCS please se!}nd yourcorrespondence to: Joseph R.
