It is combatable with Atari Dos 2.5, MyDos} 4.5, and Sparta Dos 3.2. It specializes in allowing you to boot disks when used with the SOFTBOOT.COM utility. This means th}at you can have AtariWriter+ in one snapshot and an InfoCom adventure game running in the 2nd snapshot. I've tested this out }with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with no problems. It also uses almost none of the memory is the lower 48k of ram. It ac}heives this by putting most of itself into the ram that is under the operating system rom. GENE}RAL INSTRUCTIONS If using Atari Dos be sure that RAMDISK.COM is not on the disk you boot from. A ramdisk will destroy th}e snapshot image that is maintained by Snapshot. You must have Snapshot on a dos disk that can boot before you try to load an}d run Snapshot. This is because Snapshot will reload the DUP menu immediatly after initializing itself. After Snapshot loads,} you may press shift-control-1 or press the HELP key to switch to the 2nd snapshot. You will hear a buzzing sound from your s}peaker when you do this to let you know that the snapshot process is under way, and that you should release the key. The DUP }menu will load the first time you switch to the 2nd snapshot, so don't take your dos disk out of drive one until after switch}ing to the 2nd snapshot the first time. If using Sparta Dos 3.2 be sure that you do not use RD.COM unless you use it wit}h the /E modifier (256k+ machines only!). This is because RD.COM will destroy the snapshot image that Snapshot creates and ma}intains. If you have a 256k Rambo-compatable upgrade you can still have a 128k ramdisk if you use the /E modifier. Load Snaps}hot from either the command line or from a batch file. If ran from a batch file, the batch execution will terminate when Snap}shot is loaded. Snapshot should be the last entry in your STARTUP.BAT file. You can use secondary batch files to continue you}r normal booting process if necessary after Snapshot is loaded. You may switch between snapshots with the keys mentioned} in the paragraph covering Atari Dos operation. } Caution must be exersized when using SNAP11.COM version of snapshot with Sparta Dos 3.2. This is because it only copies }the lower 48k of ram when saving and loading snapshots. What this means is that the Sparta routines, vectors, and database th}at is kept in the upper 16k is shared between both snapshots. If you use Sparta 3.2 in both snapshots, Sparta may become conf}used after a disk-swap and zap your directory! This isn't a problem if Sparta is used in only one snapshot, and another dos u}sed in the other one. For more information about booting disks in the 2nd snapshot, please refer to the SOFTBOOT.DOC fil}e. Tim told me about an idea he had for SSI wargamers. His idea was to be able to save and reload various SSI wargames at any }point desired, and to be able to upload and download these files to a bulletin board system. This would allow wargamers to pl }ay against each other. I thought it was a good idea, too. The end product being the SSR.COMPATABILITY The SSR i }s compatable with the following SSI wargames: COLONIAL CONQUEST GETTYSBURG CHICKAMAUGA SHILOH }CARRIER FORCE Other games may be added to the compatibility list, as more games are tested out with the SSR in the futu }re. More may be added later, as new, more compatable versions of the SSR are made.--------------------------------------- } The SSR is to be distributed as a diskcommed disk, or optionally, diskcommed and arced. This is because it is very impor }tant that all the files be distributed together, along with the DOS provided. The files included on this disk are as fo }llows- DOS.SYS DUP.SYS AUTORUN.SYS (SNAP11.COM) BSAVE.COM BLAD.COM REHACK14.COM SNAP11. }DOC SSR.DOC REHACK14.DOC---------------------------------------STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONSFOR SAVING A GAME } Just to be safe, place a write protect tab on your wargame disk, AND on your SSR disk! I also suggest starting out with SHI }LOH or GETTYSBURG at first.STEP 1 Choose one of the compatable wargames mentioned in the compatability list. Get it's } disk out, and set it aside. We will refer to it as the "wargame disk".STEP 2 Place the SSR disk in D1: and boot the }disk while holding down the OPTION key. You will see the SNAPSHOT 1.1 title screen, followed by the DUP.SYS menu.STEP 3 } Press the HELP key. When you hear a buzzing sound from your speaker, release the HELP key. The screen may appear scrambled } for a second or two. This is normal. Your disk will spin again as the 2nd snapshot loads in the DUP.SYS menu. You are now in } the 2nd snapshot, looking at the DUP.SYS menu.STEP 4 Place the wargame disk into D1:, and load the AUTORUN.SYS file }that is on it.STEP 5 Play the game for a while, and at some point where you would like to save the game, press the HE }LP key. You will snap over to the 1st snapshot, and be looking at the DUP.SYS screen. The screen may look scrambled during th }e snapping process. This is normal. Also, there may be some scrambled player/missle data flickering on your screen. This is n }ormal, and is only temporary.STEP 6 Take the wargame disk out of the drive, REMEMBERING WHICH SIDE WAS 'UP'. This is }important for resuming the game later on.STEP 7 Place the SSR disk back in D1:. Load in BSAVE.COM. You will then be p }resented with the Bank Saver title screen, and an option menu. The various functions of the menu will be discussed later.ST }EP 8 Place a new disk in D1:, and choose the FORMAT option. CAUTION, this will permanently erase all data on the disk. }Follow the prompts for formatting the disk.STEP 9 After returning to the main menu, choose the function to Save a gam }e. Follow the prompts, which will ask for a save filename, etc. The program will then save three extended ram banks, which co }ntain your wargame. STEP 10 Place the SSR disk back in D1:. At the function menu, choose Exit. You will be returned b }ack to the DUP.SYS menu. Your wargame is saved!---------------------------------------STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONSFOR RELOA }DING A GAMESTEP 1 You must have gone thru the steps mentioned in the STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAVING A GAME. S }TEP 2 Place the SSR disk in D1: and boot the disk while holding down the OPTION key. You will see the SNAPSHOT 1.1 titl }e screen, followed by the DUP.SYS menu.STEP 3 Load BLOAD.COM. Then place the disk with your saved wargame on it into }D1:. Choose the Load function of the main menu.STEP 4 When prompted, type in the complete filepath of your saved warg }ame. The program will now reload the three extended rambanks with your saved wargame. When it is done, press RETURN to return } to the main menu.STEP 5 Place your wargame disk into D1:, WITH THE CORRECT SIDE UP.STEP 6 Press the HELP key }. The screen may scramble for a few seconds. This is normal. When the snap is done, you will be returned to exactly where you }r wargame was previously saved!--------------------------------------MISCELANIOUS NOTES Both the BSAVE.COM and the }BLOAD.COM programs can display a directory from any drive that is online. You may also save and reload your games from any dr }ive you have online. You may also format a disk in any drive online. Any function in these programs may be aborted by p }ressing the RETURN key. When choosing the Exit function, ALWAYS BE SURE THAT THE SSR DISK HAS BEEN PLACE IN D1:! This i }s because it will try and reload DUP.SYS.--------------------------------------ADVANCED USAGE You will eventually c }ome across games that will NOT ALLOW YOU TO SNAP back to the 1st snapshot. (It's the 1st snapshot that has the DUP.SYS menu, }and where you run BSAVE and BLOAD from.). For games such as these, an additional utility is included. It is the REHACK1 }4.COM utility. If a game won't allow you to snap back to the 1st snapshot, follow the steps for loading a game with the } following addition. Immediatly before STEP 4, load the REHACK14.COM utility. After doing this, continue onward, with STEP 4, } etc. This step must be done with COLONIAL CONQUEST. What this utility does, is to watch an interrupt vector that SNAP11.COM }(the autorun.sys file on the SSR disk) uses. If that vector gets stolen by the game, the REHACK14 routine will re-enable it f }or use between BOTH the game, and SNAP11.COM. In other words, I've got an interrupt routine watching another interrupt vector }. Some games do not have an AUTORUN.SYS file on it. These games usually either have their own unique DOS system, or are } just a plain boot disk, without any real FMS (file maintenance system). For games such as these, the SOFTBOOT.COM utility ma }y come in handy for. What it does, is allow you to load in and initialize the SNAPSHOT system, and then boot a disk without c }ompletly re-initializing the computer system. To use the SOFTBOOT utility, follow the steps for saving a wargame, but i }mmediatly before STEP 4, load in the SOFTBOOT.COM utility from the DUP.SYS menu. Follow it's instructions, and it will attemp }t a softboot of that disk. You may find that some games require BOTH the REHACK14 and the SOFTBOOT utilities to be used }. In cases such as this, follow the steps for saving a wargame, and immediatly before STEP 4, first load in the REHACK14.COM }utility, and then load in the SOFTBOOT.COM utility. Follow SOFTBOOT's instructions.--------------------------------------- }THE FUTURE OF THE SSR SYSTEM I'll be trying to make the SSR compatable with a wider range of games. If there is a cert }ain game that you would like be able to save and reload, but the current SSR doesn't support it, please contact me at the BBS } given at the end of this doc file. I'll be glad to see what I can do for you.--------------------------------------Happy } wargaming!Support Shareware!Tom Hunt1704 Twp.
