PC Xformer is one of the oldest Atari
emulators. It was written by Darek Mihocka of Emulators Inc. Xformer used
to be a commercial product, with some free crippled demos available. Now
version 3.6, the newest MS-dos version is freeware. Xformer 96 will remain
a commercial product.
This section will cover version 3.6, look for a separate section on
Xformer 96 coming soon.
Platform: MS-DOS, Linux DOSEMU
Models Emulated: 800, 800XL, 130XE
Emulated:CTIA/GTIA, Display Lists, DLI's, P/M graphics with collision
detection, fine scrolling, Joystick support, sound
Compatibility: Moderate, I'd estimate 65-70%
Current Version: 3.6
Author: Darek Mihocka
Pros:
FAST!!! Written in almost 100% x86 Assembly language, this is the fastest of
the Atari Emulators, runs around 6x faster than a real 8-bit on my 5x86-133,
and I hear the new version is even faster. Supports .XFD/.ATR files. Has
regular/full speed toggle. Can read Atari binaries from your PC drive. You
can also toggle BASIC and 800/XL compatibility on/off on the Fly!
Cons:
Mediocre compatibility. Only emulates pure tone sounds (no distortion)
