Checkered Flag
                                                    By Doc Crinton

I've had Checkered Flag for a long time. At first, I played it for about 20 minutes, and gave up due to the tight control. I recently went back to it, and here are my thoughts.

I played for about 2 hours, and found that if you take the time to master the control, this is a very enjoyable game. Yes, the tight control makes it very different from other racers, but not impossible. I was able to finish the game and scored in the top three. It has a pretty cool winner's ending.

I've always liked the graphics and the music. The tracks are varied as is the music. Now for the controls. The method that worked best for me, was simply releasing the accelerator just before going into a turn and tapping the controller in the desired direction instead of holding it down. Turning was a lot simpler for me then, and I was able to take many tight turns without crashing. As far as the other cars blowing by you, I confess this does happen. However, it is possible to build a substancial lead with minimal crashing. They aren't always with you neck and neck.

By the way, I spoke with Rebellion about the control (I have an old ad for the game that displays the options screen and lists a steering option). I wanted to know if this was an undiscovered easter egg. Sadly, they said Atari made them remove may options before the game was released. It would be great for them to release another racer setup they way they (Rebellion) feel is best.

To sum up, I'd say give this game a chance. The graphics are great, it's not as choppy as people say, the control is manageable with practice, and the music rocks!
