Primal Rage CD
                                                    By Brian C. Bessemer

Who will rule new 'Urth?' Primal Rage has finally made it to the Jaguar CD in a decent translation of the arcade original, intro story and all. A comet hits the Earth and dinosaurs (the Draconians) emerge as gods fighting for control of new Urth. Unfortunately, the screens on the intro flash in and out way too fast and you barely have time to read them. Once you get to the actual fights, though, everything becomes much sweeter.

The title includes all seven fighters from the arcade with every move and fatality. Blizzard is the good-guy god of the bunch. He's a white primate that uses snow and ice attacks. Chaos, another primate, uses farts, vomit, and urine against his opponents. Sauron, the god of hunger, is a yellow T-Rex that simply wants to eat everything. Diablo uses fire attacks, including a damage inflicting teleport. Armadon is a heavily armored dino with tons of thorns. Vertgo, the only female, looks like a cross between a dinosaur and a king cobra. She's quick and has incredible reach. The last dino, Talon, is not only the smallest, but the quickest and the only one without a projectile attack. 'Total Dominations', 'Quick Kills', 'Sudden Deaths', and 'Lightning Combos' are included as well.

Aside from its similarities to the arcade, Jag P.R. includes two new fighting matches (Tug-of-War and Endurance) and an 'easter egg.' You can choose different color combinations for the dinos! I discovered this when I began a match with Sauron, but instead of being purple on yellow, he was black on purple. Cool! After trying again and again, I figured out how to do it. When you choose your fighter, hold down A, C, or OPTION while you hit B. Each dino has 3 extra color combinations. (My personal favorite is the yellow and dark green Vertigo.) The control interface becomes really smooth, with the addition of some 'extras', once you purchase a ProController, but without one your thumbs are going to hate life.

Graphically, the game features sprites that are slightly smaller than the arcade's... I'd say around 85% the size of the originals. The fighters are animated nicely, with alot of color. You really won't notice their size difference that much when fighting. I actually like the smaller size as it leaves the screen uncluttered. I don't, however, like the fact that the backgrounds seem to have alot less color depth than the dinos. There's no way the backgrounds use 16-bit color. It looks more like 8-bit. That could have been done much nicer, especially considering the Jaguar's hardware.

Although the sound is really good and clear on this CD, the music sounds just like it came off a video game. Even though it did, I would have liked a new soundtrack for this version. Oh well, I guess I can't have everything.

If you're a Primal Rage fan, and own a Jag CD, there is no reason not to buy this title. It's a good translation of the arcade game, just not perfect. It has superb playability and as much replayability as any other 2D fighter out there. My only recommendation would be to purchase a ProController if you don't already have one.
