Sensible Soccer is one of two soccer games available for the Jaguar. I don’t have Fever Pitch, so I can’t comment on how this stacks up against it, but I can tell you that I picked this game up for 10 bucks and it was a hulluva good deal. It doesn’t sport huge, fluidly animated characters, rockin’ tunes or sound effects, but it does provide some very good entertainment value. The graphics are very "stale." The characters are very small. Ever played Cannon Fodder? These guys are the same size. Of course the game is playable with these small dudes, but friends and family may ask you why you fired up your NES or Genesis. Despite the smallness, the dudes are animated pretty well. The soccer ball looks pretty cool. It’s kinda cool how they fit so much detail in such a small ball, hehe. The menus and such are pretty clean and sharp. Shall we say music or lack thereof? The intro track is kinda cool, and the menu song is very nice (I really thought it was good). There is no music in the game which, I guess, is true to the sport of soccer. There is some ever-present crowd chanting going on throughout your games. These little chants are kinda cool, but sometimes get repetitive. The crowds ooohs and ahhs are pretty cool too ;) Giving the ball a boot will produce a thumping sound, but there is not much more than that. I would have liked some voice to go with this game, but…..ahh well I guess. Control? Yes…..Standard character movement with the joypad and 3 different kicks are carried out by the A, B and C buttons. The little "extra" on the control subject is the ability to bend your kick. This is done by pressing the joypad in different directions after your shot. This may take some time to master, but it’s always nice to have greater control over what you’re doing, right? You also have the ability to slide kick a loose ball or headbutt a ball in mid-air. I found the controls to be nice and responsive. The gameplay is the best thing in the game. There are a ton of different ways to play this game. Play a Cup, League, Friendly, Euro Cup, League of Nations, World Championship and tons more! There are a stadium full of teams to choose from. There are varying weather conditions, player substitutions, and selectable difficulties. The game is very fun. After about two games, I was assured that it WAS possible to score! I thought it was darn near impossible! It takes some nice strategy. Lob the ball in close to a teammate and let him slide kick it in, or bend you kick just right so it escapes the goalie. It’s pretty cool to get a few friends together and have a big World Championship. You can select how long you want each game to be, so you may want to set it low if you do this with some friends. The game’s a good addition to a Jagger’s library if you’re not just looking for some graphic flash. If you are, by all means, don’t bother with this one. This game simply has some great gameplay which can be enjoyed alone or with friends. At times during the tournaments and championships, I get very excited. Yes, this game gets pretty intense when you’ve got a championship on the line. The CPU teams give you a very good challenge, and they’re not overly cheap. I especially like the sudden death mode that comes up on a tied match in a tournament. Talk about biting some fingernails. This is a game that I’ve kinda grown attached to; it’s pretty good.
