Flipout emerged as the Jag's first real puzzle game and has a very interesting plot! You are invited to join a flipping festival on another planet, and you encounter twelve kinds of aliens that basically try to mess up the work you have done matching tiles, which is the basic point you have to accomplish. There are nine areas (each area having several games), with you having to flip everything from tiles to food plates, but the basic idea is the same, match the right colored objects with their base. Flipout has four difficulty levels.
As you begin Flipout, you encounter a few fairly easy areas, but then the aliens step in, some of which are just there for humor and others will do things such as throw your tiles you matched back up in the air and eat your tiles so you have to wait until they spit them out to finish the level. The games difficulty moves up in a very efficient manor, and then the last phase of multiple levels you encounter will be about the most aggravating sequence you will ever run into, with 21 tiles and then you have some of those nice critteres flipping them back in the air when you are nearly finished! This all provides for a game that will keep you coming back very frequently, at this time I don't even want to think about the harder difficulty levels!
The graphics in Flipout are quite impressive for a puzzle game, they are very sharp and colorful, and the aliens also look very sharp. The graphical package is about as impressive as possible on a puzzler! The effects in Flipout are very interesting to say the least, one alien makes some noises when a tile hits it that resembles a certain bodily function, but it is well done as are most of the other more sane effects such as the tiles hitting the ground and so on. The music is pretty good certainly, it goes very nicely with a puzzler and the music achieves what it should, though not quite outstanding. The play is very good and plays like this type of game should. It is tough to really go on about a games play that involves tile flipping since there are only so many aspects you can talk about, but the game plays like it should.
Overall, I really enjoyed Flipout. The game is well done all around and creates for an addictive and very effective puzzler. The amount of difficulty levels also helps playability, though I can't contemplate the Zero Gravity Planet being much tougher! The overall package is outstanding, and I would give this game a go if you have any like for puzzlers and tile flipping games, I am not generally a big puzzle fan, but I certainly enjoyed this one! The folks at Gorilla did a very nice job!
