Hover Strike

Atari Shooter Cartridge

Game Description

Hover Strike is a game that has a fairly similar point to it like the Cybermorph games have, search and find (a genre which I like quite a bit). Hover Strike has 30 levels which are texture mapped and 3D and your goal is to defeat the Terrakian Pirates and prevent them from taking over that planet. You use a hover craft (that makes sense doesn't it?) and you can use an array of weapons such as missles to make way through Hover Strike.

Graphics

The graphics are pretty good in the cart version, but they are obviously going to have to suffer through being compared to the CD version which is improved. Still the texure mapping is done very nicely and Hover Strike has a pretty nice amount of detail as you'll find with many of the ground surfaces and enemy objects. A very nice effort here.

Sound

The effects are decent in Hover Strike and what you would expect though they are far from groundbreaking. On the other hand I found the music to be very, very good. There are a variety of tunes (something in which the CD lacks as they play the same track during the game) and each one is of very good quality. The voices are also very well done for a cart, the sound certainly enhances Hover Strike as it is done very well.

Gameplay

The play takes a few minutes to get used to, but once you do you'll enjoy the gameplay quite a bit. The only complaint is it is a little slow, but then again I suppose hover crafts are also so that is not very much of a minus. The accuracy of your weapons are also very impressive which is also nice in heated battle. No complaints on the gameplay as it was certainly a positive!

Overall

I enjoyed this game immensely as I am quite a fan for this genre of games. There are no major flaws in my opinion and this game is long and will keep you busy for quite a while with it having a very good level of challenge but it is not overly tough either. If you like this genre of games and don't have the Jag CD, I would look into this one, if you have the CD I would go for the improved CD version as that is quite impressive with the improvements and extra levels they added!
