POKEY... THE ATARI 800/800XL/5200 EMULATOR!
What is Pokey? Well I was pretty frustrated by the lack of a good Atari 8-bit emulator for the MSDOS market. There was really only one emulator out there for PC systems and it didn't support sound or joysticks at the time. There were a couple nice Atari emulators for Unix (see below) that worked very well, but I didn't have the space for Linux at the time. So I started working on Pokey. I was delayed for awhile working on Pokey while I was in the process of moving, but now things have settled down and I am pretty pleased with its preformance.

Im working right now on the following
Emulated Sound Support (sound blaster compatibles)
4 Joystick Support (using printer port joystick interface)
Faster Emulation (right now it seems like you need a fast pentium for decent emulation. Ill know more when you guys start testing!)
Support for converting raw MSDOS files to Atari disk images on the fly
Paddle support.
5200 keyboard support. Since the 5200 doesn't have any console keys and uses the keys on the joysticks to start I can't currently start any 5200 rom images that dont start from the fire key.
Im looking for assistance on the following areas.
5200 technical information. I have the Analog article on 5200 hardware but hope there is more.
It wouldn't be nice if I didn't give credit to those who have helped me along the way with Pokey.
Frank Barrus. His ACE emulator (UNIX systems) was very helpfull in my research. Go to Frank's page for ACE
David Firth. His Atari 8-bit emulator was also a source of great help. (UNIX again) Go to David's page for his Emulator. I used David's emulator as a framework for Pokey and used some of the code from his emulator in Pokey. David and all who helped him have done a great job with Atari 800 and I owe them a million thanks
Shawn Hargreaves. His Allegro library for DJGPP made joysticks, video, and keyboard handling a piece of cake. Shawn's email is unavailable right now. I will update this link when he is back on line.
DJ Delorie and his DJGPP compiler. Used to compile Pokey! Click here to check out the FREE DJGPP compiler!
Patrick Bass. Patrick use to work for Atari and then Antic magazine. Patrick has been giving me insight into the workings of the 5200. With his help I hope to have better 5200 emulation soon!
