Atari 8-Bit Computers

Ahhh, the 8-bit computers that Atari made. Many an hour was spent playing games, writing essays, playing games, writing Basic programs, and playing games. Remember "Ultima III"? Remember "Rainbow Walker"? Remember "Spelunker"? Remember "Boulderdash"? Remember "Omnitrend's Universe"? Remember "Necromancer"? Remember "Bruce Lee"? Remember "Gemstone Warrior"? Remember "Dreadnaught Factor"? Remember "Oils Well"? Remember...I could go on for a long time.

o PC Xformer PC Xformer was the first emulator of the Atari 8 bit line of computers. It was originally implemented on the Atari ST and later rewritten for DOS. It is the fastest emulator that I have examined, achieving speeds almost those of a real Atari 800 on even a klunky 486DX33. It and games don't always seem to get along so well. Recently the gang down at Emulators Inc., has released version 3.6 for DOS as freeware (which looks good) and are focussing efforts on the Win95 version in the future.
o XL-it! XL-it! is at version 0.20, and has most of the features you could want, high game compatibility, a shell (somewhat clumsy), even sound that works (on a fast PC). It lacks speed, but since the author Markus Gietzen , plans to implement more and more of the emulator in machine code, that should improve.
o Pokey Pokey is an 8-bit emulator that provides 800/800 XL emulation as well as 5200 game console emulation. The author, Mike Hill , appears to be actively expanding the capabilities of his fine emulator.
