›ALL ABOUT PUBLIC DOMAIN AND ›SHAREWARE SOFTWARE.››› Public Domain (or "user-›supported") software may be copied›freely as long as nothing is›changed in the individual programs,›and as long as NO profit is made›by selling it. Programmers spend›a lot of time writing programs,›and it's great that they put them›in the P.D. They give up all rights›to the program so that users can›have easy access to programs of all›kinds. Why don't YOU put some of›your work into the public domain?›All you need do is make it known›that it is P.D. Do this in REM›statements at the start of the›program (for BASIC progs.) and/or›during the running of the program.›See how I've done it in the progs.›on this disk. All you need do then›is give your friends a copy. It›should then distribute itself!! Or›you could send them to me. I'm›always looking for new and›interesting software for the P.D.›library. Send them to me : Dean›Garraghty, 62 Thomson Ave, Balby,›Doncaster, DN4 0NU, ENGLAND.›I am able to advertise in national›magazines, because I support the›library with sales of my commercial›programs. Or if you wish to make›some money out of your programs,›then you could use the shareware›system. See below:››››SHAREWARE:›› This is the new way of getting›software distributed for free AND›getting some money from it. This›system is used a lot on larger›machines (PCs,etc.) As far as I›know, I am the only person doing›shareware programs for the Atari›8-bit. Shareware uses the P.D.›network for distribution. People›still receive a free copy, BUT they›must pay you a fee if they want to›continue using it. You then send›them a registered copy which they›can't copy. Of course, you don't›know who's getting a copy, and not›all people will register. There are›several ways of getting round this›problem. 1) Only put a shrunk down›copy in the distribution network.›They will then have to register to›receive a full version. 2) Supply a›full copy, but with no user notes.›This way they can see what the›program is like, but will have to›register to find out how to use it!›3) Put a virus or 'trojan' on the›disk. This is really a last resort.›It is not easy to do. It involves›you putting an extra file on the›distribution copy which, when run,›will format the disk, making›it useless, forcing them to›register! Or you could put a›counter on the disk, so that after›they've used it say 10 times, the›disk formats itself, forcing them›to register.› I have had much experience in›P.D. and shareware and will be›happy to advise on the best method›of shareware registration. Again›you could send it to me for my›library. When I sell shareware›disks, the registration fee is›included in the selling price, so›they automatically register! This›way you can be sure of getting›your fee.
