››The PGP-1›The Personal Game Programming System›› Have you ever had the feeling that one of your Atari 2600 cartridges was actually cheating? Ever felt like you should do good at the game because you shelled out some bucks for it? Well, now you can do something about it. The PGP-1 Personal Game Programming System will allow you to get even or change your favorite 2600 game to your liking.›› The PGP-1 comes with its own 4K of RAM and its own cartridge slot and keypad, complete with hexadecimal digits. This nice little system sits on top of the 2600 and connects to it via a connector cartridge that plugs right into the 2600 cartridge port. With this system you can now view almost any 2600 cart and change it up, providing you understand assembly and machine language. For those who do know how to program in machine code, this system will allow you to edit variables, game characters, sounds, shapes, colors, speeds and even your own strategies. Just imagine what you could do with Atari's Adventure cart. All of the commands in the cartridge are two letters long, actually they are hexadecimal numbers. In case you don't know how to program in these cryptic languages, Answer Software (the makers of the unit) have their own games with instructions on how to modify them. The first game of the batch is called Malagai, a maze game which involves stealing keys from aliens.›› If you want to really get the edge in Atari's Pac-Man cartridge, just change lines 1954 through 1959, inclusive, to EA (decimal 234). This change alone will slow down the ghosts to about one-fifth normal speed, while your Pac-Man's speed will remain the same.›› This system really adds some power to the Atari 2600 games system. It would make a nice addition to a keyboard system and other such enhancements. The list price is somewhere between $170 and $200, from Answer Software Corp.››› This article originally appeared in the May 1983 issue of Electronic Fun with Computers and Games, Vol.1, No.7, written by Jens von der Heide.››File by Don Rogers, May 11, 1987.››
