Blood IV›› Broderbund's Print Shop is a powerful program which allows you to ea¦}sily create cards, banners and signs, although it does have a few limitations. Broderbund failed to include a way of deleting§} your unwanted creations. Broderbund also decided to invent their own method of storing and retrieving files, rather than usi¨}ng the standard Atari (DOS 2.0S) disk file structure.› While Broderbund has included almost every conceivable option nece©}ssary to create printed matter, they lacked the foresight to envision Print Shop being used for anything except creating fancª}y stationary. My program, Art Shop, extends the usefulness of Print Shop by adding several features, allowing it to be used a«}s a video display tool. Art Shop will convert back and forth between Print Shop's SCREEN MAGIC files (which are stored with "¬}Print Shop" DOS) and Datasoft's Micro-Painter [or compatible] files (which are stored with Atari DOS 2.0S). Art Shop also pro}vides you with a method of manipulating Print Shop data by deleting files, renaming files, listing file names on a printer an®}d formatting disks.› By giving you the flexibility to convert pictures between Print Shop and Micro-Painter, the value of¯} each program is considerably enhanced. Some new possibilities include:›› 1) Add colors and patterns to your Screen Magic°} files, by loading the converted picture into Micro Illustrator.› 2) Superimpose captions onto pictures you've already cr±}eated with Micro-Painter, by loading the converted picture into Print Shop.›› 3) Add captions to digitized pictures you'v²}e stored with Computer Eyes video acquisition system, by loading them into Print Shop. The final image could then printed on ³}transfer paper and ironed onto a T-shirt!›› 4) Create colorful title screen sequences for movies you record with your VCR´}, by turning Print Shop files into Micro-Painter files. These screens could then be displayed or further manipulated by anothµ}er graphics program.›››How to Use Art Shop› Art Shop was designed to be very user-friendly. Menu's are used extensively i¶}n this program. The program automatically checks for the correct type of disk (Print Shop or DOS format) before reading from ·}or writing to the disk. Any errors will be displayed briefly, and the program will restart itself. Most of the prompts can be¸} entered with a single key press - the (RETURN) key is not needed except when answering Yes/No questions.› After RUNning ¹}the program, you should be staring at the main menu with eight choices. Enter a number between 1 and 8. If 8 is entered, the º}program ends and returns you back to BASIC's READY prompt.› 1) Delete Print Shop file›After this selection is made, you a»}re prompted to enter the type of Print Shop file to delete. Screen Magic files consist of an entire Graphics 8 screen and req¼}uire 61 sectors on the disk. Graphic's are the images used on cards, banners and signs - they require only 5 disk sectors.› ½} After you have entered 1 or 2, you are asked to enter the drive which contains the Print Shop data disk. The disk is immed¾}iately checked to verify it is a Print Shop disk. If the drive was not available, or if (RETURN) was hit instead of a drive n¿}umber, the program simply reRUNs itself. If the disk drive did not contain a Print Shop disk, you are again asked for the souÀ}rce drive number.› A directory of all the Print Shop files (of the type you previously selected) is now displayed. SelectÁ} the file you want to delete by pressing the corresponding letter [Uppercase, non-inverse letters only]. If more than 18 fileÂ}s exist on the disk, then you may press (RETURN) to view the remaining names. Your selection is displayed and you are asked tÃ}o confirm your choice. If you want to delete the file, hit 'Y' followed by the (RETURN) key. The file is read and the directoÄ}ry information is erased. Once 'OPERATION COMPLETED' is displayed, you are free to swap disks. The program will automaticallyÅ} reRUN itself after it has completed this function, or after you responded with 'N'.› Since the program is basically selfÆ}-documenting, I will just briefly explain the remaining six options. Please remember to not remove the disk from the drive unÇ}til 'OPERATION COMPLETE' or an error message is displayed.› 2) Print Shop ==> Micro-Painter›This operation will convert PÈ}rint Shop Screen Magic files to Micro-Painter. After answering several questions, you will be prompted for a destination fileÉ} name. You must use file names which are legal under Atari DOS 2.0S. If no file name is entered - only (RETURN) is pressed, tÊ}hen the source file name is also used for the destination file name.› Disk swapping instructions will be displayed, and tË}he picture is loaded directly into screen memory. After the tone has sounded, you may insert your DOS formatted disk and hit Ì}(RETURN). The picture is saved and you are returned to the main menu.› 3) Micro-Painter ==> Print Shop›This operation conÍ}verts Micro-Painter pictures to Print Shop Screen Magic files. The procedure is similar to the above operation. You are allowÎ}ed to use the same file name for a Screen Magic file and a Graphic file - they are identified seperately on the disk. If you Ï}entered the same file name as one already existing on the destination disk, then the old file is automatically replaced with Ð}the new one.› 4) Format Micro-Painter disk›This option simply formats a standard DOS disk in drive 1.› 5) Format PrinÑ}t Shop disk›This is a quick way of formatting a Print Shop data disk without powering down and booting up Print Shop.› 6)Ò} List Print Shop directory›This function lists all the Screen Magic or Graphic file names to the printer. If you want to simpÓ}ly view the directory, then select option 7. When you are prompted for a new file name, then just hit (RETURN).› 7) RenamÔ}e Print Shop file›This selection will allow you to rename any Print Shop file.›› Sidenotes› Art Shop is very welÕ}l protected against user errors, although the (BREAK) key will still interrupt the program. I didn't trap out this key in casÖ}e some of you wanted to step through or modify this program. If you want to experiment with this program, I suggest preparing×} a test disk to work with. This program directly reads from and writes to the disk without the aid of DOS. One error in this Ø}program will almost guarantee a scrambled disk.› When using selection 2 [Print Shop to Micro-Painter], if you don't enterÙ} a DESTINATION file name, the source file name is used WITHOUT the '.MIC' extension. Under selection 3 [Micro-Painter to PrinÚ}t Shop], only the Micro-Painter files with the '.MIC' extension are displayed. This means if you convert a Print Shop file inÛ}to a Micro-Painter file and don't enter a destination filename, then you can't convert it back without first adding '.MIC'.› Ü} Since the Print Shop's Screen Magic files are all displayed in full-screen Graphics 8, no color information is needed [orÝ} saved] with the picture. When you convert this picture into Micro-Painter format (4 color) then color information is useful.Þ} Since a few graphics programs need this color information, I simply added your Atari's default colors onto the picture. You ß}may want to substitute your own colors into lines 500 and 510 (Peek 708,709,710 and 712).› Good luck and enjoy.›you to eatEF–»ÊØÙA¤ÈÔM¤×CUÒÏC²C°C±C¸I¤ORÄËÓDÌDLÎC¶CØÌÎÁC´C³C·PÌÇA¨ÚÂÃÄÐB¤QÑÑCOÌCµÅJ±€€á} € â}@ !"€#$ã}%&'()Z A_, -€ (‚ƒ-@„ ƒ%-€)(…,$þQ A A@ä}#†A`5-@?(-<*>-K‡@N(Q(› c A% AT#‡5-@@ A(Ordeå}rsSAd@3Wˆc‡@#ˆ!@)ˆP:ˆ, +#N[ A0‰ŠŠ> $Lt. This æ}will take a few seconds.›5) You can either SAVE the entire game again with the new lines, or test it first to see if you likeç} it or not. Most books on Atari computers will give you more information about the above procedures.››Your mission is to wipeè} out all of the Klingon ships, while finding and orbiting Class M planets. StarFleet will notify you when your mission is comé}pleted, after which you'll return to Star Fleet HQ for a mission analysis.›MAIN MENU DESCRIPTION››0: STATUS›This will give yoê}u a readout of the ship's current status, with information such as energy, stardate, etc. Pay careful attention to the energyë} amount!(More on this later)››1: DAMAGE CONTROL›A listing of ship functions and their conditions will appear on screen. If soì}mething is damaged, the damage level will appear--this will decrease as time goes on,until the function is operational.››2: SCí}IENCE COMPUTER›This is used to scan the objects in the quadrant. Use this to find Class M planets, as well as how much energyî} enemy vessels have.››3: SHIP'S COMPUTER›This has several useful functions:›› >DATA BASE SCAN will give coordinates of Klingï}ons, planets, star bases, stars, and unexplored areas. Coordinates will not be given if you haven't explored the area yet.›› ð}>LONG RANGE SCAN FROM DATA BASE will give a long range scan from any coordinate that you input.›› >QUADRANT DETAILED DISPLAYñ} will give you information about a particular quadrant that you input, provided you have "seen" it with a regular long range ò}scan. If you have explored a quadrant with a Class M planet, this function will tell you if the planet is explored or unexploó}red.›› >NO ACTION will return you to the main menu.››4: LONG RANGE SENSORS›This will provide you with a nine-square, 27-quadô}rant scan of the surrounding area. The"playfield" is an 8x8 grid, with each square of the grid broken down into three quadranõ}ts. At the top you'll see the letters K,B,S, and P -- these stand for Klingons, Bases, Stars, and Planets. Look underneath thö}ese in the quadrants to see if there's anything interesting. If you see "1" under S, for example, there is 1 star in that quad÷}rant, which has a specific coordinate. The game starts from quadrant 7,7,2: 7 across, 7 down, quadrant 2. The first two digitø}s of the coordinates range from 0 to 7, and the last digit from 0 to 2. X - (0-7) across Y - (0-7) down Z - (0-2) quadrantù} in square X, Y The X and Y values are displayed in inverse video. Coordinate numbers are displayed along the top and right sú}ides of the screen, and your position is always the center quadrant.››5: SHORT RANGE SENSORS›This will allow you to see the sû}tuff that's in the quadrant you are in.››6: IMPULSE ENGINES›This is how you move about inside the quadrant. When selected, thü}is function will first provide you with a short range scan (if the sensors are not damaged!). Next you will be asked for a heý}ading. The heading ranges from 0 to 7, with each number representing a direction:›› 3 2 1› \|/ › 4-X-0 X=your current pþ}osition› /|\ › 5 6 7››After selecting a heading, you will be asked for a speed. The number you enter will move you that maÿ}ny squares. For example, if you input "2" for the heading and "3" for the speed, you will move UP 3 squares. To explore (orbi}t) a planet or dock with a star base, move into the SAME square as the planet or base.››7: WARP DRIVE›This is how you move ab}out the galaxy. You must first enter a destination quadrant, then a warp factor (speed). As stated earlier, the first two digi}ts of the coordinates can range from 0 to 7, and the last digit from 0 to 2. Enter what square of the 8x8 grid you wish to go} to and which quadrant (x,y,z). To travel to quadrant 4,3,1, simply enter "4,3,1" for the destination prompt. Warp factor is }the speed, and your energy and the stardate will change according to how far and how fast you travel. If you are about to ent}er a Klingon-infested quadrant, using a higher speed will kind of surprise them, giving you an advantage when the fighting be}gins. For exploring, though, it's best to use "1" for the warp factor.››8: PHASERS›This will allow you to fire your phaser ba}nks at the enemy. Chekov will ask you for an energy level--the number you enter will be used for EACH Klingon! So if there ar}e 2 Klingons and you enter 200 for the phaser energy, a total of 400 energy units will be drained from the ship. If the Kling }ons are far away, more energy is needed to reach them. The advantage of using phasers is that the Klingons you are firing at }need not be directly in the line of fire. You can get an estimate of how much energy to use by using the Science Computer to }find out how much each Klingon has. Occasionally the phasers will miss, and the computer may fire again to try and hit the ta }rget(s).››9: PHOTON TORPEDOES›These will almost always destroy a Klingon ship. You will be given a short range scan (if possi }ble) and then be asked for DIRECTION. The direction format is exactly the same as the impulse engine direction format. Theref}ore the Klingon must be in the line of fire--up, down, left, right, or any of the four diagonal directions. Be careful when u}sing these; you will be relieved of your command if you hit a star, planet, or star base!! And yes, it IS possible for the to}rpedo to miss the target.››10: ALERT›This is to change the condition of the ship: green, yellow, or red. ALWAYS go into red a}lert before entering a quadrant containing Klingons! One hit while in green alert will result in HEAVY damage. Use green aler}t while exploring.››11: REPAIR›Choosing this will reduce the damage level of damaged functions. This is faster than waiting f}or the function to "fix itself." You might have to choose this more than once if something is badly damaged.››12: SAVE/LOAD }(not on menu)›This will take you to a save/load›screen. You can use a cassette drive or disk drive to store the present game }conditions. This way you don't have to start all over again later if you can't finish a game. If you have ENTERed the additio}nal lines, you will NOT be able to save the game on cassette.››A FEW HINTS ...››* To replenish (somewhat) your energy and get} more torpedoes, dock at a star base. These can be found using the ship's computer.››* Avoid entering a quadrant containing a}ny strange objects!››* Class M planets are usually alone, so explore each quadrant that has one planet. You get more rating p}oints for each M planet explored.››* Warping blindly around the galaxy not only drains energy, but also could land you in a b}lack hole! But sometimes it's the only way to find those boneheaded Klingons.››* Use photon torpedoes on Klingons with high e}nergy levels, but make sure you are lined up properly.››* You don't have to get to the main menu to enter commands. You can e}nter commands from any screen; the computer "remembers" when you do this, and executes it when possible.››* To exit the game,} enter a number GREATER than 12. To resume, type GOTO 500. The program should catch any errors that might occur; you might ha}ve to re-enter something if it wasn't done correctly the first time. If something goes wrong, however, clear the screen and t}ype "GOTO 500". This will take you back to the main menu. If the problem continues, try re-running the program.
