(Note: there is }no DOSpresent on side 2!) Be sure toduplicate both sides of yourDigital Editor disk.Though this program does notrequir}e the use of Atari 1050Enhanced Density, it was the onlyway to keep all the required filestogether on one disk side. If yo }uown a double density capable drive, try to use that format. It is bestto keep as many files together onone disk as possi }ble, especiallythe "PHO" files with the"EDITOR.TUR" file. If all you set out to dois "get your feet wet", all you windup with is wet feet! Well, nolonger! Desk-t}op publishing for the8-bit Atari is finally here, and "TheDigital Editor" makes it possible. The Digital Editor version} 3.6 isa vastly modified version of theprogram by the same name. Originallywritten in Turbo Basic by Atari ClubCelle in G}ermany, DE attempts tobring desktop publishing to theaverage Atari 8-bit user. (Minimum64K XL/XE only.) The original versi}oncontained numerous bugs, was quitedifficult to use, and in some cases, extremely slow. I have done my bestto turn D.E. i}nto a much moreacceptable DTP program. One of the files I have includedwith The Digital Editor is a slightlymodified v}ersion of "BILLBOARD", aSHAREWARE program by Chris Wareham. The original 2.0 version of DigitalEditor had no provision for }hardcopyoutput, except for a small, UNTESTED,printer dump written exclusively forthe Atari 1029 printer. Neither I,nor th}e author, were able to testthis program. Yet, I have includedit on the disk for those who mightneed it.BILLBOARD is a S}tar/Epson compatibleprinter dump program which shouldwork with just about any printer. This version has been slightlymodif}ied especially for use with D.E.and now requires Turbo Basic to run,but should still perform alloriginally intended tasks }just aswell. One feature added to it, and toDE, is subdirectory support forMyDOS/SDX users. The Digital Editoris quite la}rge, and intended forsingle drive owners. It isrecommended that you keep as manyfiles as possible on the same disk.(I per}sonally use MyDOS 4.5 withTurbo Basic in double density on myXF551 drive, and have found thissetup quite acceptable.)Sub-}directories are supported up toone level deep. The remaining files, exclusive toThe Digital Editor, are Public Domaina}nd may be distributed freely assuch. I ask for no donations inreturn. Shareware donations for useof BILLBOARD should be di}rected toMr.Wareham at the address provided inhis program listing. I would, however, love to hear of any new orunique uses} for this program, as wellas see the results of your work. I have provided a means ofcontacting me at the beginning of }the"EDITOR"s program listing. Enjoy! - Tom. coz Page: 1 Tutorial for use with9}: "The Digital Editor" Version 3.6 by Tom D'Ambrosio. :} October, 1990. Please follow these instructions to fully acquaint yourself with this pro;}gram. If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to me at the address provided at the beginning of the<} "EDITOR.TUR" program listing. Please note, the very first thing you should always do is backup your programs =}(all disks) and proceed using copies. One added feature to the Digital Editor (and "Billboard") is My>}DOS sub-directory support (up to 1 level deep). Expanded Atari's using Turbo Basic and the SpartaDOS X cartridge shou?}ld also be able to use sub-directories. Follow these steps: 1. With an XL/XE computer, reboot with The@} Digital Editor in drive one. 2. Turbo Basic will load and run, followed by two introduction screens. A}Later, you may bypass this introduction by pressing any key, but for now, let the intros run through. 3. Once B}you have gotten your fill of music, press START for the Main Menu. 4. From the Main Menu select 1 for the EditC}or. 5. Please note the instructions on this intro screen, as they will only be shown from here. All functionsD} in the Editor are performed in FUNCTION/RETURN or START/CTRL/arrow combinations. Press any key to begin. E} 6. After a moment, the title bar will display the current character size and the 40 column font currently active.F} 7. Though not immediately apparent, there will be a tiny dash, or "cursor", in the upper left hand corner. PreG}ssing SHIFT/CLEAR will home the cursor to this position, with out affecting the display. Use it when you can'tH} find the darn thing. This cursor marks the "upper left hand corner" of each character. The cursor control keI}ys all function normally. Pressing the spacebar will only advance the cursor to the next position, so as not to eraseJ} any underlying graphics. 8. Hold the SELECT key and press RETURN, taking you to the Editor Menu.K} Page: 2 9. Select "4" and do a directory ofL} that disk. There should be two files, "SAMPLE1.TXT" and "SAMPLE2.TXT" on either side 1 or side 2. M}These two files were printed to disk using AtariWriter+ and the two format files: "FORMAT1.AWP" and "FORMAT2.AWP" provN}ided on the disk. If you do not own AW+, you can still add text using any word processor by setting the properO} format: Single column format: Top Margin: 0 Bottom Margin: 0 Left Margin: 0 Right MP}argin: 73 characters across. Page Length: 1/3 of a full 11" page. Double column format: Same as thQ}e single format with a second right margin of 33 and a second left margin beginning at 40. 10. After returningR} to the menu, choose "9" to enter a text file. You are then warned that continuing will destroy any previous woS}rk. Since you have not entered anything else, enter "Y" to continue. 11. Enter "SAMPLE1" at the D: prompt. OT}nly D1: is allowed, so have your file in drive one. There is no reason to enter the TXT extension since it is U}assumed. 12. The screen will clear and the pre-formatted text file "SAMPLE1.TXT" will gradually appear on the V}screen. If your file contains more than 22 lines of text, anything there after would be ignored. Make sure evW}ery screen that you create is saved as a separate TeXT file. 13. When finished, your prompt will return to theX} home position and the font size will default back to 40 column, single height. 14. Move the cursor (look careY}fully, it's tiny) anywhere you want, and type a character or two of your choice. Lower case characters are alsZ}o available. SPECIAL NOTE: I have added one special change that lets you move the cursor one half step (depe[}nding on current character size) up or down. Occasionally, you may find yourself unable to get text of differe\}nt sizes on the same line, at the same height. By holding down the START key while doing a CONTROL UP/DOWN arrow, ]} the cursor will travel only half as far as the current character height. This works best when using both single a^}nd double height text on the same line. _} Page: 3 15. Hold down the OPTION key and press RETURN. The current character size will change as indicated`} by the title bar. This line DOES NOT despict the current character size, as typing any character will show. a}It will, however, correctly display the current font. Also, this line will not appear on your printouts, so dob}n't worry. 16. The title bar should now say: "double high, 40 columns." Hold the SELECT key and press RETURN c}for the menu. 17. Now we'll load a new font. Do a directory (4) of font files by typing "*.FNT" at the promptd}. Make sure the disk with your font files is in drive one. When the directory appears, choose a font name ande} press RETURN. Any 9 sector Atari character set may be used with D.E. If you have a large collection of font files,f} now's your chance to put them to good use. 18. From the menu, type "5" and load your font. Do not enter the g} device "Dn:". "D1:" is assumed. Again, the extension is optional. You will automatically be returned to to yoh}ur screen. 19. Notice that the title bar now reflects the current font. 20. Type a few characters in this newi} font. Now press OPTION/RETURN again. The text style should change to 80 columns. The changing of fonts has nj}o effect on either 80 column text or on previously typed text. Type a few more characters. 21. Repeat step 20k} for "double high, 80 column" sized characters. 22. Time to add some pictures. If you haven't already done so, l} plug a joystick into port 1. Go back to the menu and do a directory of "PHOto" files. 23. Photo's are not dm}igitized photo's. They are simply hand drawn "icons" clipped from any 62 sector picture file using the "Convern}ter" program on this disk. (Though I have not tried it, you can add DIGITIZED PHOTOS to your work using EASY SCAN II o}(c) from Innovative Concepts! Read the section on The Magazine Maker for more details.) 24. Choose a "p}photo" and return to the menu. Select "3 - Load Photo". For now, we will ignore the "save screen" warning by q}pressing RETURN. 25. Enter your photo's name. Again, do not enter the device, and the "PHO" extension is optir}onal. Soon, your icon will appear on a blank screen. s} Page: 4 26. IMPORTANT!!! When the photo appears, make sure the disk with the "EDITOR.TUR" fit}le is back IN DRIVE ONE! If not, the program will crash and your page, if not saved, will be lost! 27. As soou}n as you move the icon, your page will reappear. Your icon will flash as you move it. Underlying text will remain v} unaffected until you press the trigger, setting your icon at that location. 28. If the icon is invisible w}when you press the trigger, it will reappear where it was last visible. 29. If all has gone well, you should hx}ave returned back into edit (typing) mode. Now, return to the menu and save (2) your file (on a separate data y}disk). Make sure the file name you use does not already exist. Your PaGE will be saved as a 59 sector file with z} the PGE extension (if no extension was given). If your disk is full, or any other error occurs, insert a new disk {}and try again. 30. Now exit the Editor by selecting "7 - Main Menu" from the Editor menu. 31. From the|} Main Menu choose "2 - The Converter." ***** The Converter ***** 32. When this program's }}menu appears, insert your data disk. * Please note: From the menu, there is no way to convert a file from any~} format to the PaGE format. Pages may only be created using the Editor program. 33. Choose "3 - Page to Pictu}re Conversion" and enter the name of your page. (or do a directory if needed.) The proper extensions are assume}d throughout Digital Editor, except from within "Billboard". 34. When prompted for the save file name, you may} give the same filename again. If you do, you will have two files; one with the "PGE" extension and one with "}PIC". When finished saving, your PICture will appear. Press any key to return to the menu. 35. This new "PIC}" file is in 62 sector, Micro Painter format compatible with the Graphics drawing program provided with DE or a}lmost any drawing program of your choice, provided it will accept 62 sector, graphics mode 8 (high res.) files. } * For more detailed information regarding The Converter, please refer to the section on using The Magazine Maker. } 36. Exit to the Main Menu. Page: 5 } ***** The Graphics Drawing Program ***** 37. Select "3 - Graphics" from the menu. This program is }in compiled Turbo Basic for speed. The original program was unbearably slow, with many bugs, and written in a }hap-hazard style that prevented it from being compiled. All the features of the original have been retained.} 38. When the program finally loads, you will see a blank screen with a tiny pulsing dot at the center. Press S}TART for the menu. 39. From here, choose "L" and load your PICture file. Make sure your data disk is in drive} one. 40. Find a blank spot on the screen and move to it using the joystick. (If you think the cursor is slow }now, you should have seen it before.) 41. Press SELECT to invoke the Zoom function. This will take a f}ew seconds. 42. The Zoom window does not scroll with the cursor. This window is physically set by your cursor}'s position when SELECT was pressed. Press the trigger and draw a line around the edges; the full size of your} window. 43. If you pressed SELECT before, and nothing happened, you are probably too far down or right. Move} the cursor a little farther in the opposite direction until Zoom can be enabled. If you haven't already done }so, do step 42. 44. Press SELECT again, returning you to your full screen. After a few seconds your box will }appear where you have drawn it. 45. Remember the size of this box. This is very important in the Graphics/Dra}wing program. This window is the same size that is used by both the Copy and Mirror functions. 46. If you wan}t, you may go back and erase this box. OPTION toggles you between draw and erase modes. 47. Try a little free}hand drawing by pressing the trigger and moving the joystick. If nothing appears, you are probably still in er}ase mode. Page: 6 48. Press STA}RT for the menu and try some of the other functions. Here are the descriptions of each: 1)Freehand> The defau}lt drawing mode you just used. 2)Lines> Press the trigger once to plot a point, move the cursor and press the }trigger again to draw to that point. Process must be repeated for each line drawn. 3)Circle (C/H)> First plot} the Center of your circle, then its Height. 4)Oval (C/R/H)> Plot Center, Radius, then Height. 5)Fill>} To fill any enclosed area, place cursor inside the space to be filled, and press the trigger. 6)Points> Plots} dots only. Moving the stick while the trigger is pressed has no effect. 7)Script/Text> Allows you to enter 4}0 column text from any cursor position. To use, put cursor where you want your text to appear, and press the t}rigger. To exit, press ESCape. 8)Load Char Set/Font> Load any standard 9 sector character set. For use with "}Script" (7). C)Copy> Duplicate a portion of the screen. Remember that box you drew in Zoom? This is the maxi}mum copy size. To use, position your cursor at THE UPPER LEFT CORNER of what you wish to copy. Press the trigg}er once, then reposition the cursor at THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER of what you wish to copy. Then move the cursor to } the top right of where you wish it to appear. The copy will either replace, or superimpose itself on top of its new} location, as selected by you from the menu. BOTH COPY AND MIRROR MUST BE RE-SELECTED FROM THE MENU BEFORE EAC}H USE. Copy/Mirror DOES NOT default to ANY drawing mode once complete. Select a new mode from the menu. } D)Directory> Use as you have in the other programs. Again, subdirectories are supported. L)Load Picture> L}oad any previously saved 62 sector picture file. 59 sector PGE files must be Converted first before they may be } edited here. M)Mirror> Functions exactly like the copy function, except that the copy will be an inverted ref}lection of its parent. Enter "3" to continue. The "X" reflection is "left to right"; "Y" is "top to bottom". } Both types of reflection may be used simultaneously, if so desired. S)Save picture> Saves current screen in 6}2 sector Micro Painter format, compatible with Billboard. The "PIC" extension will be appended if none is give}n. R)Reboot/Menu> Since this is a compiled Turbo Basic program, you must Reboot to re-enter Basic. You can sk}ip the introduction by pressing any key when the orange "Credits" screen appears. } Page: 7 If you seem to be having trouble while in Zoom, it is poss}ible that the drawing mode you last selected is still active. All drawing selections (including Copy & Mirror)} are allowed within Zoom. Now that you have created your masterpiece, resave it (on your separate dat}a disk) with the filename you used before. (Any filename will do, but for now, lets not create any more files.) } Then, select "R" for Reboot to return us to the Main Menu. ***** The Magazine Maker. ***** } If you only wish to produce disk based magazines, or if you do not own a printer, then you may use this program} to create a "magazine on a disk". Great for users groups, BBS's, and the like. Here's how: Though} it is not necessary, yet much more convenient, you will probably want to go to DOS and format a blank disk, just for }this purpose. Write both DOS, and the Turbo Basic AUTORUN.SYS to this newly formated blank disk. (Do}n't format the DE disk by mistake!) When done, copy every PGE file you wish to appear in your magazine to this} disk, the order is not important. To copy files using a single drive, use the (C)opy function with no desti}nation filename. Reboot DE and run the Magazine Maker program. Follow the on screen prompts and press RETU}RN. Enter the name of each PaGE, one at a time, in the order you wish them to appear. Remember, the PGE exten}sion is assumed unless you indicate otherwise. When you have entered all the names of all the pages you wish } to use, end filename entry with CTRL "," - a small heart should appear. Now enter some intro text. This t}ext will be the first thing to appear when the magazine is loaded. Do not use commas or any screen/cursor cont}rol characters in these lines. A name and perhaps a prompt to "press any key" are usually good ideas. As pr}ompted, terminate with the "*" character. The screen will go black momentarily as the files "MAGMAKER.DAT" and "DISKM}AG.TUR" are created. Then the program will run, allowing you to view your "magazine". } Page: 8 Press any key to step through the pages, pressing} the spacebar instead takes you to an optional menu, allowing you to change screen colors, advance to the next }page, and Quit. If you wish for this magazine to automatically load and run whenever the disk is booted, ren}ame the file "DISKMAG.TUR" to "AUTORUN.BAS" (not on the same disk as DE though). Tips and Tricks: The} magazine maker only allows 59 sector, PGE files to be used in your magazine. The "Mag-Maker" will not recognize 62 s}ector "PICture" files produced or edited using the graphics program. To use PICture files, I have provided a s}hort program called "MAGMAKER.62" which simply reads and displays 62 PIC files in much the same manner as "MAGM}AKER". A minimum understanding of BASIC and very few program changes will be required to fully utilize this pr}ogram. Instructions on how to modify it are included within the program listing. It too can be made to auto-run when} placed on a blank disk with DOS and Turbo Basic and by renaming it "AUTORUN.BAS". (This program requires Turb}o Basic to run.) Through the use of PHOto's created using "The Converter", any hand drawn image can be impor}ted into your PGE files. Allowing you to display PaGEs in much the same way as "MAGMAKER.62". Once you have }your PAGE looking the way you want, save it with the graphics program. (these are 62 sector files only.) Then, } exit the graphics program, and run "The Converter". To Create a PHOto: From The Converter, select choice "1} - Picture to Photo conversion". (If you do not remember your PICture's name then do a directory instead.) } After a moment, your picture should load and appear. Your cursor, a small flashing dot, will be in the upper le}ft corner. Using your joystick, move the cursor to the upper left of where you wish to define your photo. Pres}s the trigger once. If the sound is up on your monitor, an audible tone will be heard. Move again to the LOWE}R RIGHT of the icon you wish to define. As you move, the icon will be blacked out, indicating the portion of the } screen to be defined. When you arrive at the lower right of your icon, press the trigger again. Your ico}n may be nearly any size. Icons/Photos are defined as squares, (or rectangles if you prefer) and are "cut" fro}m these horizontal and vertical locations. If you should press the trigger at more than one corner, the extraction wi}ll be aborted. Page: 9 Th}e Converter will then define the icon you selected and black out the remaining screen. It was previously noted to me }that this "fill screen blackout" might get trapped in an infinite loop. But, I have yet to of had this happen t}o me. You may include "digitized photos" this way using Easy Scan II (c) from Innovative Concepts. Digitize} any photo in high-rez, graphics mode 8 - 62 sector, format. Make sure the photo you digitize is roughly the s}ize that you desire the icon to be. Use The Converter's PICture to PHOto option to "cut" the icon from this s}creen. Save it as a PHOto and then it may be included on any PaGE/PICture file. I do not own, nor have I us}ed the Easy Scan, so I can not assure you that this works, though I assume that it does. If you are successful}, I'd love to see your results! Soon, the Photo will be repositioned at upper left, and you will be prompted} for a filename. If you do not like the resulting "photo" you may abort the save by pressing RETURN at the prompt. } Otherwise, enter a filename (PHO extension is appended if none is given) and press RETURN. In either case, you w}ill be returned to the Converter menu. Option "2 - Photo to Picture" is used to turn previously defined } PHOto's into 62 sector graphics files so that they may be further edited using the "Graphics" program. Once a "pho}to" has been re-edited to your liking, it may be redefined as a photo again using the converter program. When }using this option, follow all on screen prompts for directions. To define a "photo" as a PICture, use option} 2 to load the PHOto of your choice. Using a joystick, you may move it anywhere you wish. Press the trigger t}o place/drop the icon. The resulting file may be edited with the graphics program. ***** Hardc}opy and BILLBOARD. ***** Two programs that may be used to obtain a hardcopy of your work have been provided.} The file "HARDCOPY.TUR" is the original Atari 1029 printer dump program. It's author does not know if it will } work, and I have neither used it, nor altered it in any way. I have simply provided it in case someone needs it. } The "Hardcopy" option of DE loads and runs a specially modified version of Chris Wareham's BILLBOARD (SHAREWARE}) program. This version requires Turbo Basic to run, supports subdirectories (up to 1 level deep), and include}s on screen prompts to aid in DE printouts. } Page: 10 Also, this new version is quite large, and in most cases, does not recognize the memory conf}igurations set up by the other DE programs. As such, you will most likely be prompted for a System Reset and t}o re-run the program, once loaded. From the menu, use the arrow keys to select the functions. When loading }a Digital Editor, 62 sector PICture file, select "Gr. 8" when prompted for "LOAD AS:". BILLBOARD does not assume the }"PIC" extender as in the previous files, so it must be included if so desired. Once your picture has }loaded, it will be displayed in INVERSE format. Press any key to return to the menu. Select "Print" from thi}s menu. To send output to the printer, enter the device as "P:". The next thing you should see is informati}on regarding the use of Billboard with the Digital Editor. This screen is only here as a reminder. Here} is what it means: If you wish to print your page from Left to Right, it is then possible to print up to 4 P}ICtures on the same page, in newsletter format. (Actually, it is possible to print up to 8 PICtures, using sin}gle width/single height, but this is a bit too cramped to be legible.) Decide if you wish to print your page }from Left to Right, or Top to Bottom (sideways). Press RETURN to continue. Enter the next prompts in accordan}ce with these notes. If printing more than one picture per page, follow these guidelines: 1) Make }sure the page begins in the printer as low as it will go (when using standard 8.5" x 11" paper). 2) To print} 2 separate PICtures on one half of the page, block the first picture "LEFT" where indicated. 3) Make sure t}he printer is on and ready. Press RETURN. 4) When finished, you will be prompted to return back to the top }of the page. Type "Y". (This only works with tractor feed paper!) *** If you are printing 2 pictures to the} LOWER HALF of your page, you will probably want to turn the printer OFF then ON AGAIN, so that when you are pr }ompted to "Return to top of Page" the printer will believe the top of the page is where you started instead of }the actual physical top of page. Page: 11 } 5) Perform all the same selections as before, except this time, block your PICture RIGHT. 6) To print }on the lower half of your page, it is a good idea to manually roll the paper back about an inch, to the last line } printed. Don't worry about this printing over the bottom of your last page, nearly every D.E. PIC file begins with } a small blank margin at the top, (where the font line appeared in "The Editor") unless you specifically put so }mething there while in "The Graphics" program. DE PICture files are a bit too long to all fit on one page with }out rolling the paper back some. (on 8.5" x 11" paper.) ESC after printing should return you to the "Press }"M" for Main Menu" prompt. To do so, just type "M". And that's it! You should now have a working knowledge }of The Digital Editor, and going from idea, to hardcopy. Play around until you become familiar with it. If an }y problems or errors do come up which you are unable to figure out, you may contact me at the address provided }in the "EDITOR.TUR" listing. Enjoy! - Tom. Oct. 1990.
