He sent me quite a long letter(much too long to reproduce in TGR)telling me I should have sent forfurther in>Y}formation before criticisingFUTURA in my editorial. Maybe this istrue but at the time of writing allthe info I required wa>Z}s in the PD filein FUTURA. Also, nowhere in the filedid it quote that the listing was apreliminary one only. Maybe the tit>[}lesI mentioned are the only two non-PDtitles entered in the library but Ihonestly didn't intend for my commentto lead peo>\}ple into thinking that mostof the PD library from FUTURA is madeup of commercial titles. Even if I did make a mistake I do>]}n'tthink Mr.Murray had the right to callme incompetent for giving my opinion ona matter. Surely that is what aneditorial >^}is for! I didn't intend formy comment to sound like 'destructivecriticism' so I apologise if it cameout that way. I also a>_}pologise formaking it sound like Mr.Murray uppedthe price of FUTURA for his ownfinancial gain. I read my editorialagain a>`}nd must admit it could be takenthis way, so again I apologise. To whoever is reading this I adviseyou to get hold of a cop>a}y of FUTURA 6which Stuart tells me will clarifythe whole matter. You may make moresense of it all then! Anyway, onto a RE>b}ALLY serious matter!Namely some contributions please! I amvery disappointed with this issue ofTGR because there just aren'>c}t enoughdoc files in it! I like to try and getthe right mixture of programs and docsbut it just hasn't been possible inth>d}is issue because nobody has submittedanything. If you've got an idea for anarticle then do it and send it! Thanx to all th>e}e people who saw the adin Page 6 and wrote to me for recentissues of TGR. Special thanx to Alanwho actually wrote back say>f}ing heenjoyed them! It's a pity he decided tosend an article he wrote to DeanGarraghty because "his need seemed thegreate>g}st". I'm not sure about that butthanx for the kind words. I see that Excel is to cease afterissue 26. This is a pity but i>h}t hasbeen on the cards for some time. In theearly days you could always find a gemof a program among the crud (usuallywri>i}tten by Robert himself) but recentlyRobert has been busy with 'Lizard' fromTiger Developments and 'The Page 6 10thAnnivers>j}ary Demo' so he hasn't had muchtime to write any programs for Excelit seems. I hope you are all doing your bit andsupport>k}ing the new software releasesfrom Derek Fern. At the moment I havebought only 'Operation Blood' and 'MegaMag 5' but this i>l}s all I can afford soI have done my bit for the moment. Please do try and support Derek and hispostage charges (sorry it ju>m}st slippedin!) and more new software will beimported!John E. (TEBSF)Anyone familair with DOS 2.x wBs}ill knowthat when files are saved the lastsector of any file will always contain'rubbish' left over from the lastsector wBt}ritten. This program clears allthe unused data from the last sector ofany file written to a DOS 2.x disk. Now I predict thaBu}t around 0.01% of theAtari population will find this utilityuseful but I only wrote it to'clean-up' the TGR disks. It willBv} work on any DOS 2.x disk but donot try to modify SPEED menu disks asthe menu will become corrupted. Thereshouldn't be anyBw} problems but onlywork on a back-up!*TGR Fixer!----------This program will fix a few bugs inpast issues of TGR. It is Bx}possible thatyou don't have a bugged disk but if indoubt fix the disk anyway! The 'fixes' may not become immediatelyappareBy}nt but I can tell you that thefix for TGR 04 is in one of thelocations in 'Overheard!' where I had abit of a problem with Bz}my text packer(all manual you know!) and the fix forTGR 07 is for 'Bandit Boulderdash 8'where there are some funny sounds B{}whenyou start to play the game.Be warned! There is no disk check builtinto the program so make sure youalways enter the cB|}orrect disk or itwill be corrupted!@%OK! The joke maybe wearing a littlethin but I have nothing else to putin TGR!Some people may find these offensive sopressF~} ESC if you're the sort who findsthe language in 'Prisoner' a little strong.*More Top 810 Tips-----------------1. If F}you are ever planning on taking a long cruise then don't forget to take your 810 with you. Then if the ship sinks yoF}u and your family would be able to float to safety on the back of your faithful 810.2. If you somehow manage to get yF}our 810 disk drive through customs then why not hide a cache of hard drugs inside it? You'll probably kill a few F}people but who cares? You'll be rich!3. When walking down a busy street why not hold your 810 against your ear whiF}lst talking incoherently? Just watch as people stare at you in admiration, thinking you own a new fangled mobile 'phF}one.4. Are you sick of getting your ass kicked because of your dimunitive size? Next time you plan to go out walkinF}g take along your 810 and if you see a gang of youths walking your way simply place your 810 on the floor and stand F}on it. Watch on in amusement as the yobs walk on trying desperately not to make eye contact with you.5. Do you finF}d it hard getting a female friend? Next time you decide to go clubbing it simply insert your 810 into your jockstrapF}. You'll have to beat the chicks off with a brush I'm telling you!John E. (TEBSF)DZGuess what? Yep! Nobody has sent in a'Your Page' for inclusion in TGR. Donot worry because I am sure someonewill see my plJ}ight and send me one forthe next issue (major hint all!).H;TGR Info--------TGR is released when it is complete! There is no time limit to this but thenext issue will not appear befN}ore May1st 1993. To receive a copy of the next issuesend a SAE and a disk to the editorialaddress stating your requiremenN}ts. Contributions are encouraged andwithout them TGR will not survive verymuch longer! Support TGR and it willsupport theN} Atari 8-bit for years tocome. TGR has two menu types. Boot withBASIC for the BASIC menu (which you'veobviously already sN}een) and bootholding OPTION for the extra files. All DOC files in TGR are copyright theindividual authors but they may beN}reproduced by other Atari supportersas long as THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR ANDSOURCE ARE INCLUDED! TGR editorial address is: 17 LiN}ttonBank, Gamesley, Glossop, SK13 9HF.L(Better Programming------------------At last it returns! Sorry about thedelay but I didn't really have manyideas on what R}to write about, but Ithink this issues could be of help toa lot of people.*There's nothing worst when running aBASIC proR}gram and having to wait anabsolute age whilst data is beingloaded from disk. The reason it isusually so slow is because thR}e programhas used the GET command to retrievedata from the disk drive. This istotally unnecessary because a smallcrash coR}urse on using locations 850,852-853 and 856-857 will allow you toload data from disk at the same speedas a normal load. UR}sing the aforementioned locations isreally quite easy, you just needsomeone to point out what each locationdoes and then yR}ou should have noproblems at all. You must first openyour file before the necessary POKEsthat are shown here.*loc 850TR}his is the read/write location. If youare reading data from the disk then thevalue 7 should be stored in here. If,on the oR}ther hand, you are writing todisk you should store 11 here. By storeI simply mean POKE 850,7.*locs 852-853These two locR}ations are the start ofmemory to load into. A problem is theyare in hi/lo format and so yourstart address must be converteR}d beforebeing stored in these locations. Forexample, say you have to load your datastarting at memory address 11734. TocoR}nvert this number into hi/lo use thefollowing... LOC=11734:HI=LOC-(INT(LOC/256)*256): LO=INT(LOC/256)This will give youR} the value of 214 inHI and 45 in LO thus store 214 in loc852 and 45 in 853.*locs 856-857These two locations are for theR} numberof bytes to be loaded. Again they're inhi/lo format and you can use the aboveprogram to convert the number. If youR}are unsure about how many bytes to loadthen simply storing 255 in both locswill do the trick most of the time. This is onlyR} if the data you are toload has nothing after it. For exampleif you are to load a font into memorythen chances are the filR}e will containthe font data and nothing else. Sostoring 255 in both locs should befine. The next bit you have to do is caR}ll thedisk drive into operation. This is donevia a small machine language routinethat you have probably come acrossbeforeR}. Because this doc can't dealwith special characters you will haveto load the file 'D:BET.BAS' from thisdisk to see an exaR}mple. The only snagwith using all the information here isthat it will only work with IOCB 1.Although it is possible to chaR}nge itto work with any IOCB number (by this Imean the number following the hash whenyou OPEN a file) it could be hard forR}some of you to follow and would makethe BASIC listing rather harder tounderstand. Just remember to alwaysleave IOCB 1 freeR} at all times for anydisk I/O that is needed.*That about wraps this up. I hope thishas helped someone, somewhereunderstaR}nd this subject a bit more.John E. (TEBSF)P-Software Reviews----------------Not so much 'software reviews' thistime but more 'newsletter reviews'.*TWAUG NewsletterV} and Disk #1---------------------------- The first issue of this newsletter anddisk from the Tyne and Wear Atari 8-bitUsV}er Group consists of a 24 page A5booklet full of reviews, instructions, etc. and a double sided, single densitydisk full ofV} goodies. You also get aleaflet informing you of the disksavailable in the TWAUG PD library. The disk contains a number ofV} BASICprograms including a few games from theold ANTIC, a 130XE extra memory tester, some 1020 plotter demos (to go with thV}earticle in the newsletter), Tomo'sWavy Demo which appeared in TGR 07 andan atrocious digi-demo from someone whowishes toV} remain anonymous (sorry guys, the next one will be better!). The bonus on the B-Side of the disk isa updated program origiV}nally publishedin ANTIC. The program is 'Talking MathWizard' and is a program to test yourMathematics knowledge to the fulV}l (atsome of the higher levels anyway). Theuniqie feature of this program is thatthe answers are actually spoken. It'snotV} always easy to tell what is beingsaid but it adds a nice dimension tothe program. When you open the orange-coverednewsleV}tter the first thing you'll seeare a few advertisements from Atarisupporters like Excel, Boot!, FUTURAand BaPAUG. It was aV} nice touch ofTWAUG's to give over this advertisementspace free of charge because it'll helpAtari users see just where theV}y can getsupport for their machine. Inside the newsletter you'll find aletters section (no letters as yet),a nice nostalgV}ic corner (a bit like theYour Page in TGR), an extensive guideto Daisy Dot III and the things it can(and can't) do, instruV}ctions for thegames on the disk, a buy/sale/contactsection, an article on mastering the1020 plotter, an extremely short (mV}uchtoo short I thought) article oncommunications and the first in aseries on machine code reprinted froman old Monitor maV}gazine for the benefitof all. The first issue of the TWAUGnewsletter costs an extremely low#1.50. All future issues will V}cost#1.95 and it's #11.00 for a year'ssubscription (6 issues). This offersgreat value for money and I can'trecommend it hV}ighly enough. It isplain to see that this scheme hasn'tbeen thrown together in the hope ofmaking a fast buck. It has been V}madeby people who love their Atari FORpeople who love their Atari. I've alsobeen told that the next issue will beeven betV}ter than the first with morepages and more contributors! Even morereason to subscribe right away! Send any money to: PO BoV}x 8, Wallsend,Newcastle-on-Tyne, NE28 6DQ.*FUTURA------ I briefly mentioned FUTURA in lastmonth's editorial, but here V}is a moredetailed look at what's on the disksbrought out by the North of ScotlandAtari User Group. All disks are doublesiV}ded, single density.*issue 1-------On the A-Side of this issue you willfind the games Let's Hop and TotalRecall. The AV}-Side is mostlydominated by text files though andit's there that you see FUTURA at itsbest. The docs files in this issuecV}over a wide range of interests fromStuarts review of AMS5 to an interviewwith the author of DIAMOND GOS. On the B-Side of V}the disk are theprograms To Kill A Commodore, BombJack (Gunpowder Charlie to all the oldAtari User readers), Speedscript (V}anadequate word processor). How to MeetCows (I thought it was funny!),Cyrtabor (a foreign game that isimpossible to contrV}ol) and theapparently liberated Table Football(since when was it PD?). All in all, an excellent first issue.I look forwaV}rd to seeing more... wait! What's this?*issue 2-------Issue 2 carries on in the sametradition of the previous FUTURA wiV}thall the text files on side A and thegames, etc on side B. On the A-Side of this issue is thehorse racing game Triple CrV}own, it'squite good. The docs files (other thanthe usual) are a report on the CanadianAtari Expo 1992, A look forward to tV}henext AMS, Inside Atari BASIC part 1,Some more about Diamond GOS (guesswho didn't read it?) and an INFO FILEfor you to fV}ind Atari 8-bit support. On the B-Side are the programs Think +Work, Atari Drum Machine, Laser Demo,Quadromania XL, Sound V}MonitorProfessional and Jump! These are allexcellent programs, but Think + Work ismy favourite. Another nice issue, FUTURV}A seems to begoing from strength to strength. I'll(hopefully) do a review of issuesfollowing 2 in a forthcoming TGR butatV} the moment I am a bit pressed forspace.John E.
