Sorry ab9}out this being released halfway through May but like I've said in the TGR Info, TGR will only be released when it is complete9}! I will not fill up the disk with sub-standard PD or text files stolen from elsewhere. That is not TGR policy and never will9} be! Did any of you see Stuart Murray's remarks in Futura 6? I must pick Stuart up on a number of points that he made. Call9}ing me a hypocrite was just silly as I was condemning the fact that the disks were being sold as PD NOT THE ACTUAL COPYING OF9} THE DISKS! Also Stuart claims "Both myself and the contact [who he received 'Barkonid' and 'Phantastic Journey' from] belie9}ved these disks to be in the public domain." Hmmm. Rather strange that seeing as it was this exact contact who had them pass:}ed on to me for de-protecting. The contact wanted the disks to have the protection removed so that he could copy them and sen:}d them out to his contacts. I agreed to remove the protection because the games were not available in Britian and probably ne:}ver would be. I know the name of the person who sent Stuart the disks but I don't think he should be dragged into the quagmir:}e that Stuart Murray (or 'Slippery Stu' - He'll blame it on you, as he's been affectionately called here at TGR HQ) has creat:}ed for himself. Also (there's more?) I would like to know how Stuart knows about games like 'Trix', 'Miecze Valdgira' and 'K:}ult'. All of which have been mentioned in the pages of Futura and have yet to be released commercially in Britain. Could 'Hal:}o Stu' have pirated these titles? NO! Surely not! I'm extremely sorry that it has come to this stage but Stu's attitude of ":}It couldn't be my fault" is totally out of order. Admit it Mr.Murray - you made a MAJOR boob in allowing the disks into your :}PD Library. Of course whoever is reading this may not have gotten a copy of Futura 6 yet. If not then send off for it or get: } it from your local PD library and my rantings may make a little sense! Actually, funnily enough, the only main bit of news : }in the Atari circle is that Futura is going to become a subscription only disk-mag (though how Stuart plans to protect the di: }sk is beyond me). I wonder if Page 6 will now take the same attitude towards Futura as they do News-Disk? Totally ignoring it: } because the PD Library the editor runs is a major threat to theirs? Time will tell, I suppose. OK! Any contributions please: }? Bought a new game? How about writing a review? Got a good idea for an article - how about writing it and sending it? And wh:}at about a 'Your Page' - they are not hard to do! Please think about contributing something to TGR else the waits between eac:}h issue will get longer! I can't offer you anything financially because I don't make a penny from TGR and I don't wish too. I:} enjoy doing TGR and, with more contributors, will continue doing so. Please do think about it. I think you should all know :}that I am writing this whilst in terrible pain, having just got released from hospital yesterday (though rumours that I'm abo:}ut to change my name to 'Jewish John' are completely unfounded). The minute I was well enough to think straight, my first tho:}ught was 'The Grim Reaper'. If I can fight through the pain barrier for TGR then surely you can write something for it! Do yo:}u feel pretty bad now? My many thanx to Ken, Alan and Spite for submitting something for this issue of TGR. It's appreciated:} guys! TGR 10 will hopefully be double sided. Richard Gore put forward the idea of doing a double sided issue as a Christmas:} special but I rejected it because I didn't have the support. I still haven't the support but I'm hoping that may change.Th:}ank you for copying this issue of TGR. Please help it on its way by sending it to all your contacts.John E. (TEBSF)*Updat:}es-------A few updates for programs and articles.EDOS (TGR 04)I never did get a reply from EDOS or Byte Back and Alter:}native.US BOOTER! (TGR 05)This enables warp speed on Happy/Lazer drives and there's no need to copy the disk with ULTRASP:}EED SKEW ON to enable warp speed. Also, Spite informs me that if you load this before loading 'The Last Guardian' you are ent:}ered into the cheat mode. Anyone know what the legal cheat is?TWO FONTZ (TGR 05)Major mix up with this one. For a start R:}AMPTOP isn't lowered and thus the fonts aren't protected and this can cause corruption with a large program. Also when fixing:} the 'bug' I found out I'd reserved too much space for the fonts anyway! If you are going to use this program then I suggest :}the following amendments. If, though, your program uses less than 28k then chances are you will not need to make any of these:} changes.Modify line 0 so it reads POKE 106,PEEK(106)-8Add this BEFORE the GRAPHICS 0Modify line 32751 to read A=PE: }EK(106)this is simply remove the '-16'.Modify line 32754 to read A=A+4originally it said '+8'.and modify line 32765:!} to read POKE 756,PEEK(1798)-4which was originally '-8'.Now everything should work fine!8_TITLE: OPERATION BLOOD.AUTHOR: OUR 5OFT (BLOODY CODERS).PRICE: #5.95RELEASED BY: DEREK FERN.This is a game I have long b>#}een waiting for, so how has it converted to our Atari 8-bit?Well first I have to say the graphics and sound effects aren't a>$}s good as the ST version, but the playability is 110% better! The screens contain well drawn graphics, but lack colour, which>%} is a sad point. The sound effects are pretty good too, although a sample wouldn't have gone amiss!*THE GAME:You control >&}a gun sight (pink!), which you move with your joystick. It is a bit sluggish when moving from one side of the screen to the o>'}ther, another bad point. You have to shoot soldiers which appear on the screen in a number of different ways, rolling, runnin>(}g and just appearing in front of you! They shoot at you, throw grenades and also knifes, which you can shoot at if you're qui>)}ck enough! You also get tanks and helicopters, which you can blast out of the sky with your grenades (activated with the spac>*}e bar). You have to shoot a number of soldiers, tanks and helicopters to finish the level, which is quite easy (after a bit o>+}f practice). You also need to collect icons which scroll on to the bottom part of the screen. These icons contain extra bulle>,}ts, grenades, power-ups and explosives, which if you shoot destroy everything on screen, except the helicopters. The scenes i>-}n the first level are set in what looks like an army camp, the second in a forest and the third in a jungle with huts and tha>.}t sought of thing. The animation is good, although it's not as good as 'Miecze Valdgira'. For example the soldiers seem to sl>/}ide along the ground, like they're ice skating! The game is well packed, lots of action going on. It contains five screens, o>0}f which I have only got to level four! You have to keep watch of your health, which is shown as blocks down the left side of >1}the screen. Your bullets are shown on the right hand side of the screen. At the bottom of the screen are icons, which show th>2}e number of soldiers, tanks and helicopters which you have to shoot. It also contains the number of bullets and grenades you >3}are carrying. On the whole it's a nice 'violent' game with nice graphics and nice sound effects. If you think yourself as a b>4}udding Rambo, then I suggest you buy this game as it won't disappoint. There is also a light gun version coming out soon but >5}in my opinion Derek Fern should have released both versions at the same time.Joystick version on one side with the light gun>6} version on the other. Unfortunately the Super Un-Chopper will not work with the following. i) Any file that was originally OVER 256 sectors lB?}ong cannot be un-chopped.ii) Any file modified using 'Super Chopper Supercharger' also cannot be un-chopped (sorry!).Koung B@}and Trong---------------The disk is filled with these 2-player games.@ITurboflex Plus-------------- To create a version of 'Turboflex' that saves high scores then follow these instructions. FFB}irstly format a disk and write the DOS files to it. This is just to safeguard your original 'Turboflex' from being overwritteFC}n. Now load the original 'Turboflex' game. It was in issue 55 of 'New Atari User' so if you have the issue disk load it fromFD} this. Of course you may have it from eons ago, any version will do. Now insert TGR 09 and type: ENTER "D:TURBO1.LST" TFE}he data will load and when loaded re-insert your previously formatted disk and run the program. Play the game once and you wiFF}ll get a high score (all the scores are set to 0, so it won't be hard!). After you have entered your name into the top scoresFG} they will be saved to disk. Now press RESET and re-insert TGR 09 and type: ENTER "D:TURBO2.LST" After this had loaded iFH}nsert your disk with the high-scores on it and save the new version of 'Turboflex'. Now you have a version of 'Turboflex' thFI}at when first run will load all previous high-scores and save out new ones. OK! Maybe this modification is 11 years too lateFJ} but who cares?John E. I first used a PC computeNV}r a couple of years ago on an Employment training course, and after the usual standard training in spreadsheets, word processNW}ing and database's, I started to play around with the different screen modes via GWbasic. Screen 1 is a CGA (Color Graphics NX}Adaptor) mode with 320 by 200 scanlines and is interlaced. The total number of bytes for a screen is 16,384 ($4000) and the nNY}umber of bytes per scanline is 80 ($50). If we count from 0 to 199 as a computer would, the data for the even numbered scanliNZ}nes (0,2,4,6 etc), is stored consecutiveley from the beginning of the picture data (7 byte header in the file). The data for N[}the odd numbered scanlines (1,3,5,7 etc), starts at an offset of 8192 ($2000) bytes from the beginning. What I wanted to do N\}was convert a demo over from the Atari to the PC, and to aid me I wrote a program to take a 62 sector binary saved screen andN]} convert it automatically to a BSAVE format that the PC would recognise. There's nothing brilliant about it, what it does is N^}expands the screen data horizontally from 160 pixels to 320 pixels. The vertical resolution is left intact (192) and filler bN_}ytes are included to make up the difference. As BASIC is not my forte, feel free to modify the program. After the picture hN`}as been converted you need some kind soul with an ST and a program called XFORMER, to convert the file over to a 3.5" disk. Na}If anyone is interested enough, for a blank 3.5 or 5.25 disk and return postage, I can send some pictures that have already bNb}een converted and ported over, plus a machine code fade routine and demo converted from THE best computer. I was walking around a shop called 'Atari World' wondering what cassette to spend my hard begged-for cash on (no disRf}k drive in them days!) when my eyes just happened to rest on the magazine rack and their before my eyes was a magazine dedicaRg}ted to the Atari computers. I had never even heard of 'Page 6' before this time and the only magazine I bought regulary (but Rh}not every month) was the old 'Atari User'. Anyway the magazine was the last on the rack and it showed! Something rather stranRi}ge had happened when printing and cutting the magazine and the first few front and back pages were actually smaller than the Rj}rest of the magazine. I thought this was intentional at first until I realised that some lines from the type-in listing 'AntsRk} in your Pants' were missing. Well, undaunted, I bought the issue and took it home to read. Was I impressed! The magazine waRl}s absolutely brilliant and in my opinion knocked spots off 'Atari User'. I can't explain why but it just seemed to feel betteRm}r than 'Atari User' ever did. After this I would impatiently wait for the next issue of the magazine (just why wasn't it monRn}thly?!) and when it was due out I'd make the trip into town to buy a copy. This happened for a few issues until I saw Les EllRo}ingham pleaing for people to make a commitment to 'Page 6' and subscribe. I decided this was what I'd do and whilst I was at Rp}it I bought all the back issues that were available (back to issue 20). If anything, after subscribing, the wait between eachRq} issue seemed to get longer but this of course wasn't true! Everything was fine and dandy for quite awhile but then suddenlyRr} my copy didn't arrive when due. I waited for a couple of days and then, thinking it had gotten lost in the post, I 'phoned 'Rs}Page 6' to tell them. Unfortunately I was wrong and the reason the issue hadn't appeared was because 'Page 6' were in a bit oRt}f financial trouble and had had to postpone the issue. This was a great blow and I honestly thought I'd seen the last of 'PaRu}ge 6' but thankfully it wasn't to be. The magazine bounced back and carried on, more or less, the same way as before. The EdiRv}tor was again asking for our financial support via the Accessory Shop and so I decided to order a few PD disks that I'd had mRw}y eye on for quite awhile. I also got a free copy of 'Pokey Player' (which I originally thought was a card game!) for spendinRx}g over a certain amount so you may remember this? Everything rolled along as normal until it was announced in 'Atari User' tRy}hat the magazine was to merge with 'Page 6' for the new 'Page 6 Atari User'. What this basically meant was that 'Atari User' Rz}was to cease and live on only in name. The new magazine was just 'Page 6' with an added title. True, it did have a few of theR{} old 'Atari User' columns in the 'first' issue but we didn't see anything else from the old 'Atari User' except for a few 5-LR|}iners. Again, everything rolled along for a short while and then came another name change. 'New Atari User' was born in the R}}effort to grab more attention on the shelves. Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't, but it wasn't long before the magazine was avR~}ailable through 'order- only' and later through the old system of subscribing. Issue 59 brought along another shock. Maybe tR}he colour cover was no longer necessary as the magazine wasn't available on the newsagents shelves but the new cover looked tR}acky and cheap. Also this issue seemed to have an extremely poor content but maybe the cover gave me such a shock that I wasnR}'t expecting much? Issue 60 was, in my opinion, one of the best issues for a long time, with a nice mix of articles and progR}rams. I'm sure Les could scour the Public Domain for a better game than 'Ten Pin Bowling' though! The thing that surprised mR}e the most about issue 61 was the fact that I wasn't expecting it! I just heard a rather loud plop at the front door and whenR} I went to see what had been posted I noticed tha familiar transparent cover. It did quite shock me actually because I'm usuaR}lly looking forward to the magazine a couple of weeks before it is due. So, does 'New Atari User' have a long lasting futureR}? I think so. The Atari 8-bit users of today are the last in the line. The people left are the people who love their Atari 8-R}bit and wouldn't sell up for the world. Many will (and have) upgraded to bigger and better (?) machines but they don't get riR}d of their Atari 8-bit. For example I have recently bought an STe but I use my 8-bit more than it on a ratio of about 5:1. TR}hus, if 'New Atari User' can survive with present day sales there is no reason why it shouldn't survive for quite a few yearsR} to come. Of course a lot depends on the quality of articles but, in fairness, it is rare to see a poorly written article in R}the magazine. Most are of high quality. Well, I have waffled on a bit haven't I? Sorry about that but I hope you enjoyed reaR}ding the 'Page 6' history as it relates to me.John E. (TEBSF)P@Hello, my name is Alan and this is the story of my life with the Atari. It is Christmas 1985 and I am being left behind by V}the revolution in computer technology, or so Tomorrows World and the papers keeps telling me. I need a home computer, but whV}ich one shall I get? Looking about the shops I see that several clearance offers are available. The Tandy Color Computer is V}only 16k, that one is ruled out. The Commodore Plus 4, with its built in software, is interesting. But it's the Atari 800XL tV}hat seems to have the best overall package of hardware and software at the right price. OK. Having made my decision, I then V}got what seemed to be the last Atari available in Runcorn, as my hands on experience began with helping the Currys assistant V}to repack the last unit, which was the display model. Having got it home, I picked up the manual and got a shock. It was a sV}mall booklet masquerading as a manual. The Introduction to Programming cassette was also quickly gone through. So that took cV}are of BASIC. The other tapes provided kept me amused for longer. Then I discovered the Atari User mag by chance. At last soV}me real info, things were looking up. I even found I had rev.C BASIC on board and avoided problems I didn't even knew existedV}. However I also discovered that I was not going to be a programming genius. In fact it took me a great deal of effort just V}to type in and debug the programs. So what about commercial software? No problem. The local outlets had tons... for other coV}mputers! But only a few Mastertronic titles for the Atari. Some of which made watching paint dry seem exciting. And the tapesV} took so long to load. If only I could afford a disk drive to speed things up. In the end I lost interest altogether and theV} Atari ended up stowed away under my bed, forgotten and unloved. Fast forward to Autumn 1992. Reading the small ads in the lV}ocal rag, I spot an Atari system for sale with a 1050 drive. Making enquiries, I discover that the computer is broken, but thV}e drive and software is too good to miss. Good news eh! Well not altogether, as my own XL, after its long rest, soon decidedV} to become unreliable, and eventually had to be replaced with a second hand unit I picked up very cheaply. It was soon joinedV} by a printer to complete the set up. Now, having put together a working system, I discover that the Atari is, officially sV}peaking, as dead as a Dodo or a Dragon, or even a Video Genie. Anyone remember that? And, as I am still a novice programmerV} I have to rely on the Public Domain and all the dedicated Atarians out there that keep the flag flying. This article forms pV}art of my small contribution to that effort. It was written with T:Edit from TGR01. There are a million stories out there inV} Atari land. This has just been one of them. It could be your turn next. So do John a favour and drop him a line OK!TuBecause TGR has been getting around a bit more recently, I have received quite a few letters congratulating me and TGR contriZ}butors for the quality of the programs and text files. (TEBSF)XQThe Breath of Life------------------Written by John E. (TEBSF)PLEASE NOTE: This adventure is in two parts and the passwo^}rd will be required before you can start part 2. Part 2 will appear in a future TGR.*The last few days seem to have happene^}d so quickly. Firstly the Princess Pethal, your future wife, fell into a deep sleep from which there was no awakening her. Th^}e King's Mage, Sartan, claimed that evil work was ado, the reason being patently obvious. The King himself was deadly ill and^} the Princess is the only living heir to the throne. The holy scriptures quote that if there is no-one to rule over the land ^}then the dark days will return. You remember your conversation with Sartan. "You do know of the dark days, Haplo?" "Of cour^}se", you reply. "The Legend of Prince Shaka and the Battle for Deamorc are stories I learnt when I was very young". "What ab^}out the Elltears?" Your mind sifts through the legend.Prince Shaka was being chased for miles by three hell-hounds. His las^}t hope was to scale a tree at the summit of a hill. He made it up the tree with only a few seconds to spare. Shaka took an i^}nventory of his belongings. The only weapons he had was his bow and an extremely blunt knife, there were no arrows for the bo^}w. "The Elltears is the tree that Shaka climbed up to escape the hellhounds." Sartan nods. "The hellhounds stayed at the bo^}ttom of the tree for 3 days and 3 nights. None seemed to feel hunger or thirst and they had only eyes for the Prince." You c^}ontinue the story. "So the Prince made some arrows out of the wood of the tree, knowing it was his only, extremely slim, chan^}ce." "The Prince made three arrows and as if by magic all found the heart of a hellhound when fired. The Prince claimed the ^}makeshift arrows were so blunt and warped that they would barely pierce a new-born child's skin and they had no flight path. ^}The fight with the hellhounds was the turning point of the whole battle. The land would have fallen without the Prince to lea^}d the attacks." You pick up the story again. "After the battle was won, the Prince declared the tree sacred and named it 'El^}ltears'. Since then it has been forbidden to harm that tree." Sartan nods. "You know the story well, Haplo, but you may be w^}ondering what all this has to do with the Princess. I will explain. The gift of the Elltears is the gift of truth. The reason^} each hellhound was killed when touched by the wood was because, in reality, the hellhounds didn't exist. They were created b^}y an evil mind, they were an illusion of depth. An illusion of the mind. There is a similar problem with the Princess. She is^} under a deep and dark sorcery, much, much powerfuller than mine, I'm afraid. Although she looks as though she is in a deep c^}oma, she is in reality, awake and well. The Elltears will tell her this. She will be given back the breath of life." "So you^} want me to go and get some wood from the Elltears?" "NO!" The Mage shouts. "That is forbidden. You must never harm the tree^}. Never! What you must do is find the cave in the hill, staight underneath the Elltears. In that cave you will find a small p^}ool of water, this is normal rain water which has passed right through the heart of the Elltears and absorbed some of its pow^}er. Be warned, Haplo. Do no let this water touch your skin or it will tell you the truth! That may not sound so bad, but real^}ity can be an extremely strong enemy." "I will find this cave", you vow.
