NEWSLETTER January, 2002

It's auction time again! The club acquired a good-sized amount of mostly 8-bit Atari stuff recently from a user moving out of town, so it's another opportunity to enahnce your collection. Bring spending money! Also, if you have any Atari or Atari-related stuff you're interested in finding a new home for, consider auctioning it off through this month's SPACE auction.

The club's PO box is presently paid for through 1/31/02. Do we wish to renew the box for another year, or is it now time to discontinue the PO box in order to cut expenses? I'm not sure, but we'll need to make that decision this month. Bring your opinions!

Another issue is the club BBS. It's been many months since it's been up and operational, as far as we can tell, and we haven't heard from Nolan over the same time period. This development comes after the club earlier greatly benefitted from Nolan's heroic volunteer efforts at establishing the BBS, then making it available over the Internet. But, in practice, we don't seem to really have a BBS at this time. Do we have any other volunteers to run a club BBS. I suspect not. But our club Bylaws require us to have a BBS. Does the club really need a BBS any more? If not, it may be time to consider removing all mentions of a club BBS, and the BBS Sysop volunteer position, in the Bylaws. Are we ready to consider such a move? Bring your opinions this month!

Last month we had another fabulous SPACE Christmas party. The formal meeting lasted a surprisingly long time, but we got to the festivities ok and I hope everyone had a great time. I did! Thanks to all who helped pull it off (and those who helped with the cleanup).

Thanks, keep using that Atari, and come to your next SPACE meeting, Friday January 11, 2002.

Greg
Treasurer's Report
by Greg Leitner
For December, 2001

You would think that the Club would be in trouble if only seven members showed up for a meeting. But I must tell you and even I am shocked that this Club will survive if the last two months is any indication. It sure would be nice to have a majority of the membership each month so that important issues like changing the By-laws or making drastic decisions would have the support of its members. It would also reassure the Board of Directors that it is doing the best job it can do for all the members.

Oh well enough of that. Don't forget the Xmas party next month and make sure you check out Mike Weist's article for what to bring. The members that were present at the November meeting have already signed up for what to bring and the Club of course is going to furnish the main meal.

Now down to the important part of this article. Here is the breakdown on the Club treasury for November 2001.

Beginning balance as of November 1, 2001: 893.14
Receipts for November meeting:

Memberships 15.00
Dom's 15.00
Total Receipts for November 2001 30.00
Expenses for November 2001 .00
Ending balance as of November 30,2001 923.14

If we keep on this pace the Club can almost cover it's monthly expenses on the $30.00 revenue from each month. It would cover the room rental of $25.00 and most of the newsletter expense. Since we are seriously considering the dropping of the BBS and the P.O. Box there isn't much more to report in the way of Club expenses. With this outlook and the current Treasury balance you can see we sitting pretty good for a long time to come.

Please join us in December and help celebrate the end of another SPACE year and the upcoming New Year. Let's all have a great SPACE Xmas party.

I'm proud to announce version 2.7.1 of CC65, a C crosscompiler / crossassembler combo for 6502 systems.

CC65 has C and runtime library support for many of the old 6502 machines, including

The libraries are fairly portable, so creating a version for other 6502s shouldn't be too much work.

Version 2.7.1 is a bugfix release. It fixes a few errors/omissions in the documentation and all bugs that are listed on the "Known bugs" web page for version 2.7.0.

There is still no support for the following features:

* Floats and bit fields.

* stdio file routines on most systems. The 8 bit Ataris are the first machines that do have full file I/O support. Please note that the complete CBM family doesn't have stdio file support!

* The 80 column mode on the C128 is not supported by the conio library.

Available packages:

As usual I will provide the complete sources and several binary packages, including RPMs for RedHat Linux. Linux is the primary development platform, so the sources do compile out of the box on Linux machines.

Please note that there are now separate RPMs for the compiler proper and the target specific libraries. To develop for one of the predefined target systems you need the compiler RPM package *and* one of the target machine packages.

Binaries for DOS and and Windows will follow or may already be available at the time you read this. OS/2 packages will again be available, but since there are almost no downloads for OS/2, so the host platform may get dropped in the near future (again). As with the RPM packages, you need the package for the development system (Windows, etc.) *and* one of the target machine packages.

More information information and a download link, please visit the cc65 web page at

Thanks to all who sent feedback and suggestions and of course to anyone who helped developing cc65!

Compute!'s First Book of Atari Graphics is now available on the Web - full text and all the software. (With permission of the copyright holder.) It's at: http://www.atariarchives.org/c1bag/

Kudos to Allan Bushman, who did the scanning and HTMLizing; and Ron Hamilton for doing the code.
