Michael
President's Corner

September, 1999

Just got my MIO back from K-Products (the second time) the other day. Everything works! And his prices are very reasonable. So now I have an Epson LX-810 printer, and my Zoom 2400bps modem both connected to the computer via the MIO. Now all I need is a hard drive...

Did we resolve the issue of whether the Club is interested in buying the "Once Upon ATARI Video Documentary Series?" The web site is: http://www.netcom.com/~hsw . After reading all about it again, I'm interested! There are four Episodes:

"1) House of Video Games,"
"2) The Enemy Within,"
"3) They Just Have To Like It," and
"4) The Agony & The Ecstasy."

1 and 2 come together on one tape for $46, and 4 is available for $26. Episode 3 is "pending edit, due Autumn 99." Perhaps we should hold off any club purchase decision until the entire set is available?

Finally...ah yes, Bylaws. We will hold votes on the following Bylaws changes at the September meeting.

Article IV, Section 1.
Now reads: "The officers of the club shall be President, vice-president, and Treasurer. These officers shall perform the duties prescribed by these bylaws and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the club."

Proposal, make the Secretary an elected officer: "The officers of the club shall be President, vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer. These officers shall perform the duties prescribed by these bylaws and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the club."

Article IV, Section 2.
Now reads: "The President and vice-president shall preside over the scheduled club meetings. The Treasurer shall keep account of the books and the treasury of the club."

Proposal, adding Secretary's responsibility, as well as clarifying contingencies for absences: "The President shall preside over the scheduled club meetings. In the President's absence, the vice-president shall preside over meetings. The Secretary shall record in writing the minutes of each SPACE meeting, and preside over club meetings in the absence of the President and vice-president. The Treasurer shall keep account of the books and the treasury of the club, and shall preside over club meetings if the President, vice-president, and Secretary are all absent."

Article IV, Section 3.
Now reads, no changes proposed: "Section 3. The officers shall be elected by a majority vote, or by acclamation if only one person is running. The term shall be for one year, or until a successor is elected; the term of office shall begin at the close of the annual meeting at which the officer is elected."

Article IV, Section 4.
Now reads: "The President and vice-president shall actively seek volunteers to fill the following positions: Secretary; Disk Of the Month (DOM) Librarian; Paper Librarian; Educational Software Librarian; Bulletin Board System Operator; Newsletter Editor; and Membership Chairman. These volunteers shall be subject to the approval of the club membership. Special Interest Group (SIG) Chairmen will be appointed as needed."

Proposals, separate votes for each:

1) Drop "Secretary"
2) drop "Paper Librarian"
3) drop "Educational Software Librarian"
4) drop "Bulletin Board System Operator".

If we have time, we could continue on with discussing Article V this month.

Article V now reads:

Section 1. The regular meeting of SPACE shall be on the second Friday of each month, unless otherwise ordered by the club or the Executive Board.

Section 2. The November meeting of SPACE shall be known as the Annual Meeting and shall be for the purpose of electing officers, receiving reports of officers and committees, and for any other business that may arise.

Section 3. Special Meetings can be called by the Executive Board or upon the written request of 10 club members. The purpose of the meeting shall be stated in the call. Except in the case of emergency, at least 3 days notice shall be given.

Section 4. Fifteen (15) members of the club constitute a quorum, when current membership exceeds 50; all other times a quorum shall be 7 members.

Section 5. All regular and special meetings of the club shall be open meetings. Executive Board meetings are not open meetings.

Section 6. Club DOMs will be sold at club meetings by the designated DOM Librarian or the Membership Chairman. The price of this software to be set by the Executive Board.

I would propose changing Sections 3 and 4 to refer to percents of the current membership, rather than specific numbers of members. I would also question the purpose of Section 4.

Bring your thoughts to our September meeting, and keep using that Atari!

Space Minutes
August 20, 1999

Michael Current, Space club president, opened the meeting at 7:45 p.m. Michael Current asked for a secretary report from club secretary, Mike Weist. Mike recapped the minutes printed in August Space club newsletter.

Michael Current asked for a treasurer report from club treasurer, Greg Leitner. Greg stated that the club ended with a treasury balance last month of $1532. The club took in $43 last month from 9 DOM sales and 1 membership renewal.

Expenses were as follows pizza party cost and 2nd quarter room rent of $195. The new balance stands at $1337.43. Greg Leitner noted that room rent tonight is free because of mix up by City of Falcon Heights. Room rent for 3rd quarter should be $130 instead of $195.

Greg also stated that there would not be an auction tonight, but maybe one before the end of the year.

Greg Leitner and Michael Current gave the membership report and the DOM report for Glen Kirschenmann, DOM Librarian and membership chairman, because he had to leave early.

OLD BUSINESS- Michael Current talked about the CGE (Classic Game Expo) that was held in Los Vegas. Michael Current placed a order for a video of this event.

Michael Current reported that FreeNet(One of the first ways to get on the Internet free) is shutting down. The reason is there equipment is not Y2K ready. Don't want to upgrade because it is too expensive. There was a Atari SIG on FreeNet. Michael Current is working with person that had Atari SIG on FreeNet to create a Atari Web site All the stuff the from the Atari SIG on FreeNet will be on this Web site.

Michael Current talked about possible bylaw changes in the future.

1. Change the club secretary position from volunteer to elected position

2. New officers will start in November instead of January.

3. Remove mention of BBS in bylaws

4. Drop the positions of software and paper librarian from volunteer positions

NEW BUSINESS- Randy Gelking reported on a Atari video series put out by a Howard Scott Warshaw, a 2600 game programmer for Atari. The video series is a behind the scenes look at Atari. Part 4 is available for $25.95. It is a 30 minute tape.

Mike Weist asked about free Internet being offered. Mike Weist also told the club members about Hamfest that is coming up in October '99.

Meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

Greg
Treasurer's Report
by Greg Leitner
September, 1999

I was getting a little worried when at a quarter past seven on Friday, August 20, only three members had arrived for the meeting. I always knew that whenever we would change the meeting time or place our attendance would probably drop off. I was relieved when by 7:30 we actually had eight members present and when you consider that our total paid membership now stands at sixteen, we really had a good turnout.

We were able to cover some by-law articles that we will be voting on next month and since this vote will affect all the members of SPACE, it would be in your interest to attend the September meeting. Remember that the meetings will revert back to our regular second Friday of the month.

Glen brought in another great DOM for the August meeting and out of the twelve copies we had we sold eight and the $24.00 we made on the DOM sales were the only receipts we had for the month. Our expenses were the second quarter room rental and the cost of the July and August newsletters. These expenses were $195.00 and $17.92 respectively. Our treasury now stands at $1,343,51 for the month ending August 31, 1999 . Also, our next room billing for the third quarter will only be for two months since our August meeting was free.

The Club is very healthy and if all members will continue to by DOM's and renew their memberships, the outlook for the Club is certainly rosy. Come to the meeting in September and let's discuss when we should have another auction and don't forget the all important changes and renewing of our by-laws.

See you in September.
