These kids will have to undergoe special exercises, and some even major surgery all because of a malformation of the spinal column. What is this disease?, The disease is Scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine and in most cases it is accompanied by Kyphosis or posterior curvature. It may occur in any part of the spine but produces its greatest disturbance when it is in the thoraic region. There is usually a compensatory curve in the opposite direction below the primary curvature. The difference between scoliosis and kyphosis is that in scoliosis the spine is cuved from side to side and in kyphosis the spine is curved from front to back. Nearly 70 to 80% of all cases are ^Kyphoscoliosis*, a combination of scoliosis and kyphosis. There are number of causes for scoliosis. A few are habitual poor posture, weak spinal muscles, abnormal growth of spine, heredity, enviromental influences, neuromuscular disease, instinic disease, and others that are still not known. Only about 20 to 30% is caused by neuromuscular or instrinic diseases of the spine. With scoliosis, there are number of other physical problems that may arise. If the scoliosis is severe enough (over 100 degrees), it could cause respiratory and even digestive malfunctions. But with any malformation of the spine, the ribcage tends to lose its symetry. Scoliosis is usually detected in the teen-age years, sometimes in school screening programs. Scoliosis is more common in girls than boys, and can be very embarrassing. Treatment may involve many things such as training, braces, even surgery. If scoliosis is detected early enough, it can be treated by special exercises and posture training. But if the scoliosis is too far along, braces would be worn by the patient. The brace that is most widely used is the "Milwaukee brace" which cover the bode from the shoulder bones down to the hip bones. This brace must be worn for at least twenty-three hours a day, and only taken off for bathing. If the scoliosis has reached over one hundred degrees, then surgery is required. In surgery the surgeon places a steel rod at the top of the spine and the bottom of the spine. The rod can be lengthened or shortened accordingly with clamps that hold it to the spine. There is always another alternative, the patient could undergoe spinal fusion, where they disassemble the spine and fuse it back together correctly.f0m4w64Bibliographyf0m10w60Book of the Body: The Way Things Work, @ 1979 by George allen & Unwin Ltd., pg.390-91 Cecil Textbook of Medicine 15th Edition, @ 1979 by W.
