It cannot replace TERM1030 forall-around use, nor TSCOPE forCompuserve use. This program was writtenv} in DeepBlue C by Ken Fowkes of Atari.*** DISKLINK is a highly unusualprogram, and has not yet beenthoroughly tested andw} documented. Butrather than delay its availability,we have decided to let each userexperiment with its operationor wait ux}ntil the sysops have gainedsome familiarity with it. The authorhas provided brief documentation, butwill not be able to rey}ply to messagesrequesting individual help. ANYQUESTIONS REGARDING THIS PROGRAMSHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE SIG*ATARISYSOPS z}WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE ABLE TOPROVIDE HELP AT THIS TIME. If you area novice to telecommunications, youare using this progra{}m at your ownrisk. FEATURES of DISKLINK DISKLINK is written in Deep Blue C.It is a 2 part program, including|} the178 sector compiled terminal program, and a 50 sector supplementalhelptext. DISKLINK supports file transfersbetwee}}n two ATARIs running thisprogram in 2 modes- ASCII text andmodified XMODEM protocol. Asdescribed in one of the DOC filesp~}rovided by the author, it ispossible to modify AMODEM and theAMIS BBS programs to make themcompatable with DISKLINK. Then}ecessary modifications are available in Compuserve's XA 2. SUMMARY Well, you 1030 owners asked forit, a}nd thanks to some very talentedsupporters of the Compuserve SIG atATARI, here it is. Remember, thisprogram is available on} a BETA TESTbasis and any msgs should be directedto the SYSOPs, not to the authoruntil furthur notice.SYSOP*Ron Luks 767}03,254 1-14-84_____________INSTRUCTIONS TO CREATE A DISKLINKBOOT DISK FOR YOUR 1030: 1. Turn off your computer, take out your BASIC cartridge, t}urn on your 1030 modem and and other peripherals, put your new disk in the disk drive and turn your } computer on. 5. Once the program has booted- up, select HELP from the DISK 'O LINK menu to read } the Help File. 6. For more detailed information on Disk O' Link's features read file DLINK2.DOC. wDISKLINK'S FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL DiskLink uses the well knownand widely used public domain filetransfer protocol ca}lled XMODEM,which was developed by WardChristensen for sending filesbetween CPM systems. Unfortunatly for Atari us}ers, the XMODEM protocol as initiallyimplemented did not includeprovisions for sending files thatare not an exact multiple} of 128bytes in length (i.e. most Atarifiles). Fortunately for Atari users, almost all the commonimplementations of }XMODEM for theAtari happen to use the samegeneral approach to get aroundthis problem. They include in thelast 128-byte b}lock of thetransmission a byte-count tellinghow much of that block containsvalid data. Both the AMODEMterminal program a}nd the AMISbulletin board system replicate thebyte-count in all the unused bytesof the last block of thetransmission. Di}skLink replicatesthe byte-count in the manner ofAMODEM and AMIS when sending afile. However, it uses only thelow order s}even bits of the lastbyte of the last block indetermining the byte-count whenreceiving files. This gives itcompatibilit}y with Chameleon onthe one hand, and AMIS and AMODEMon the other. The down side ofthis is that DiskLink can't sendand re}ceive from CPM systems(where XMODEM originated!) Unfortunately, for otherreasons, DiskLink is notcompatible with the} currentversions of the XMODEM protocol ineither AMIS, AMODEM, or TERM1030as they nowfunction. In order to help outnovi}ce users, DiskLink allows twousers to type back and forth (in asomewhat halting fashion) DURINGfile transfer. This allows} anexperienced user to guide a noviceuser through his or her first fewfile transfers. Or, two users cantype to each othe}r just toovercome the boredom of long filetransfers. This feature makes itnecessary for DiskLink to sendXOFF to stop the }user at the otherend from typing during disk readsand writes when characters typedwould otherwise "fall on thefloor". Th}e current version ofAMODEM (version 4.2) can'tdistinguish XOFF from SOH (whichstarts a transmission) so it"jumps the gun"} and startsreceiving blocks before they aresent. The current version of AMIS(version ??) can't distinguishXOFF from CAN }(which aborts thefile transfer altogether) so itgives up before things even getstarted.can't distinguishXOFF from CAN ] $ e#Q e# $` `TuN% `l} L)`*) LE ) $ %Y g#L $`) %Q e# $}`) [ɛ&`BJ Y 8A ` z!i{!i!l})`Jȭ)0 4 ɛ)@ ` ) }` ) <% 1%) # #}x E% %X`))`JLEX # #x E% XJJ)# }1%) ! <%)0 ` <% }`J)@Lg"LE`,lHҥҩh@ؘH} ҙ ! Specifically, it will allow users of the 1030 ATARI modems totransfer (UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD) bot%}hASCII and BINARY files to SIG*ATARI and save them to disk. ***Note*** As TSCOPE supports theCompuserve A-Protocol fortr%}ansferring files, it will NOTwork on an ATARI BBS. TSCOPE doesnot support file transfers tocassette. Installing Tsco%}peFormat a blank disk with AtariDOS 2. Write new DOS files ontoyour new disk. Copy TSCOPE.OBJ from your master disk on%}to this new disk. Rename it to AUTORUN.SYS. Booting TSCOPEFirst, remove the BASIC cartridge, turn on the disk dri%}ve, 1030 modem, and any other peripherals. Then, powerup your ATARI with your newTSCOPE disk in drive 1. XL ownersshould h%}old down the OPTION key while turning on their computer todisable internal BASIC. Be carefulnot to hit the BREAK key when youmean to hit the BACKSPACE. TheCTRL-C will abort MOST Compuserveo%}perations. Setting CIS to VIDTEX defaults While TSCOPE is not a fullversion of a Compuserve VIDTEXterminal progra%}m, it will supportsome of the VIDTEX functions, including the UPL andDOW commands for file transfers, and the ONLINE color %}graphicsavailable on various parts of thesystem. Format a bl2-}ank disk with DOS 2(included on this disk) using the"I" option. Write new DOS fileson your new disk with the "H" option.2.}Create a MEM.SAV file (required)with the "N" option.2. Copy the THANDLER.OBJ file ontoyour new disk with the "C" option2/}(of DOS 2) and rename itAUTORUN.SYS using the "E" option.Copy the TERM1030.BAS file ontoyour new disk (but DO NOT CHANGET20}HE NAME OF THE FILE).3. Turn on your 1030 modem, andany other peripherals that may beconnected to your computer. Instal21}lthe BASIC cartridge in your computer (not necessary with the600/800XL's and the XE's). Insertyour new TERM1030 disk int22}o yourdisk drive and close the drivedoor. Turn on the power to yourcomputer. TERM1030 will loadautomatically, checking 23}to seewhether or not your modem isconnected properly. If your modemis not connected, or not turnedon, TERM1030 will not 24}loadcorrectly. You should then checkyour cables and power, remedythe problem, and try again. USING TERM103025} Dialing outThe first thing that will appear, after booting up the program, will be a list of bulletin boardnum26}bers. Simply type thecorresponding letter next to the BBSname. The list that you receiveon your disk has been compiled b27}ythe author of TERM1030, and afterreading the following instructions, you'll be able to modify that listto suit your own p28}ersonal needs. If the number you want does notappear in the list, type return. Youwill then be asked to enter a numberto 29}dial.When the modem has completed dialing, and if no contact is made, the numberwill be dialed again.Hitting any key at a2:}ny time duringthe dialing or waiting sequence willtake you back to the BBS list.An alarm will sound when contact ismade.2;} The Top Line display Memsav-=>Off BBS name AtasciiThe above is an example of the topline of TERM1030. 2<}It will notscroll away, it also will not inter-fere with normal operation. It will give important informationabout your te2=}rminal settings. Itdisplays what translation you're in,Memsave OFF or ON, and the name ofthe BBS your're currently hooked 2>}upto.When MemSave is on, the BBS namewill be replaced with "BUF: 10000".This number lets you know the remain-ing bytes 2?}left in the capture buffer.Sorry, but there is not an unlimitedbuffer (You can download unlimited size files to disk, how2@}ever. See the Download section.) Answering Another ModemIf you want to be on the receivingend of things, you may2A} have a friendwith another modem call you. Whenyour phone rings, hit from the initial BBS menu screen. TERM1030 wi2B}ll then answer the phoneand send a carrier tone to thecaller's modem. Console functionsOPTION: This is used wh2C}ile online totoggle MEMSAVE off and on.SELECT: This can be used on or offline. It will take you to TERM1030'Smain menu.2D}START: Hangs up the telephone anddisconects you from the BBS. The Main MenuOnce SELECT is hit, the computerw2E}ill flip screens and you will seethe main menu.Type "T" to toggle translation fromATASCII to Ascii. If calling a BBSthat2F} is not run on an Atari you willneed to do this.Type "S" to save captured text toDrive #1. This option is used inconjunc2G}tion with Memsave. Saving canbe done on or off line.Type "M" for a disk menu.Type "H" to hangup and dial. You canalso h2H}it START to do this.Type "U" to upload or "D" to download.More on that in the next section.Type to go back on-l2I}ine.Also, the SELECT and OPTION keys canbe used to rotate screen and lettercolors while in the menu section.Use this fun2J}ction to adjust thecolors for easiest readability onyour monitor or TV. XMODEM !TERM1030 uses the standar2K}d AtariXmodem protocol and is compatiblewith over 95% of the bulletinboards using this protocol. You will have an UNLIMIT2L}ED downand/or upload buffer. This meansthat you can transfer files largerthan memory permits.UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIO2M}NSAfter the BBS (or other service)is patiently waiting for you to sendor reiceve (and not before then),hit SELECT to go 2N}to the main menu. Then, choose either "U"pload or"D"ownload. You will then be askedto give a file name. Don't worryabou2O}t being in lower case or inverse, the input routine will convertto straight upper case. After giving a file name, the trans2P}ferwill begin. If you're sending, thecomputer will load a kilobyte at atime off of drive one and send it.It will continue2Q} to load and senduntil the entire file has beensent.Downloading works the same way, except it will save a kilobyte at at2R}ime, until the entire file has beenrecieved. If something goes wrong and you needto abort a transfer, hitting anyconsole 2S}key (START, SELECT, orOPTION) will cause both computersto abort. Adding/Updating BBS numbers.TERM1030 does not supp2T}ort addingor changing the BBS list fromwithin the terminal programitself. The author didn't want aseperate file on the d2U}isk fortelephone numbers. The way BBS'scome and go, it would be a hasslefor the user to keep the disk filecurrent.Inste2V}ad, Mr. Arrington chose tosimply store the name and number inDATA statments. The DATA statments can be easlychanged to an2W}y number and name youwant. The DATA statments start atline 3000.Here's an Example...DATA SWAMPS,324-0218,T.C.M,799-60542X}Just give the NAME,Telephone num.Thats all there is to it.
