You must run thespeq}cial "T:" handler as an AUTORUN.SYS before using ACETERM. ACETERM is currently not available for 850/Hayesr} compatible modems, butwill be with enough requests. A 1200 Baud version is planned for at thattime.Although this hels}p file is long, please read it at least once. Manyquestions and problems you may have later will be answered here. t}Also, the method for installing your own phone numbers and passwords are atthe end of this file.If you should eveu}r need to reset the ACETERM because of a lockupor for any other reason, you may press SYSTEM RESET. This will v}hangup, clear the system, and check the handler. Type RUN, then press RETURNto start again. ЛPressing w} at any time will display the terminal menu. Set upyour terminal for the needs of the computer you will be cx}ommunicatingwith. is the language used by ATARI-based BBSes and otherATARI users, ASCII is for non-ATARI y} computers. (The ACETERM willautomatically set the translation as determined by your phone numberdirectory.) z} Some ASCII computers also require INEFEEDS in order tosee more than one line from you at a time. Use the DUPLEX{} to changeto half-duplex if you cannot see what you are typing when connected,or to change back to full-duplex if |} you are getting multiples of eachletter you type.Choose dialing mode with ONE/PULSE DIALING.ACETERM allows oper}}ation in your choice of standard 38 column ATARI"narrow" mode or in ACE80 full 80 column screen mode. Toggle betw~}eenACE80 and narrow screen modes with IDTH. (ACE80 width will only beactive when: 1) it is the selected screen }mode, and 2) you are either"online" connected to another computer or iewing a file. TheDIALER menu and ter}minal menu will always be in standard ATARI modewhen "offline".)You may pick new colors and contrast for }your terminal displayby using and while the menu is displayed. Also, youmay silence the buzzer t}hat will normally sound when a connection ismade or a long-distance number is dialed by pressing UZZER.You may ch}eck the directory of a disk in drive #1 by pressing ENUOF DISK. Delete a file by using ILL, or you may ORM}AT a disk.Use IEW/PRINT to see what is in a file or to print a file. Thisfunction is a very powerful tool to } see a file in your choice of 38column "normal" screen mode, or in ACE80 full screen mode, dependingwhich has b}een selected from the terminal menu. Additionally, youcan toggle your system printer on and off at any time } during thedisplay. You may "fast forward" through the file by holding ,and may "rewind", that is, BACK UP } several lines by pressing CONTROL/Rwhile viewing. This feature lets you locate and print any section ofany file NO }MATTER HOW LONG THE FILE MIGHT BE. the TERMINAL MENU carefully. You must use it often and understandevery option} on it. File transfer will be covered later.Press RETURN to exit the TERMINAL MENU when you are ready. (When youa}re already connected to another computer, most functions willautomatically return you to the terminal mode} when completed.) ̛You must have a valid telephone directory on your ACETERM diskbefore any a}utodial function can be executed. To make or update adirectory, choose option , PHONE LIST, from the terminal }menu. Thiswill only work when you are NOT CONNECTED to any other computer.Follow the prompts to create or add }to your personal directory, and toreturn to the ACETERM.Once you have a directory loaded into ACETERM, press any} lettershown on the PHONE DIRECTORY to begin dialing, or press RETURN andenter a number to dial. The number w}ill be dialed as it is displayed. If no answering computer tone is detected, the number will beredialed. Yo}u may abort the dialing at any time by pressing anykey. If you wish to connect with another computer at a }number you havealready dialed on your phone, or if you are already talking to the otherparty, use the ŭ select}ion on the directory. You may enter a sequence of numbers to be dialed if you wish to tryseveral BBSes instead of} just one. Good BBSes are popular-you oftenwill get busy signals. Press while the PHONE DIRECTORY isd}isplayed, and then enter the letters representing the numbersyou want to try. The sequence will begin when yo}u press RETURN and willrepeat until an answer is received or you stop it by pressing any key.If you do not want the s}equence to repeat, end the sequence with aperiod (.) before pressing RETURN.When an answer tone is detected, you wi}ll see the following:š-> TO HANG UP-> FOR TERMINAL MENUIf a password is stored in the dire}ctory for the number dialed, youwill also see: -> TO SEND NEXT PASSWORDPasswords may be included in your phone } directory, and may have manydifferent parts (up to 25 characters total). A slash (/) separates eachsection, and each } will be sent, in sequence and followed automaticallyby a return each time you press START.When prompted for yo}ur stored password or words, press STARTto send the first part of your password. Press them again for th}enext part when ready, etc. You may begin your communication. Some BBS systems require you tosend several R}ETURNs before they will recognize you. ǿFor modem connections to work, one computer must be in }the "HOST" mode(also called "ANSWER" mode) while the other is in the "CALL" (or"ORIGINATE") mode. Most often, y}ou will be the CALLER. Some othermodem software does not include a HOST mode, so when connecting withthem, use} the HOST mode on your ACETERM. Press the ESCAPE key whilethe PHONE DIRECTORY is displayed, after the CALLER is o}n The phone. ŮYou begin in "terminal mode", where you can type to the computer at theother end}- be it a BBS or another user. When you want to access a filetransfer, check a disk directory, or anything else, press} to getto the terminal menu. For transfer of files and programs, use PLOAD and OWNLOAD (XMODEM)modes."XMO}DEM PROTOCOL" is a system used to obtain accurate file transfers. It breaks the files into sections, sending them one} at a time. If thereis an error, the system will send the section again. XMODEM will alsoautomatically save the file f}or you.The ACETERM has the full ATARI implementation of XMODEM includingthe AMODEM system of dealing with a sho}rt last block of information. This assures program transfers without file length errors that arecommon with othe}r modem software. In addition, ACETERM will check to seeif IBM-type XMODEM is being used and will automatically change } to thattype protocol if it is detected. To use XMODEM to receive a file, first have the other end (or BBS)get the} file and their own modem ready for the transfer. When theyare ready (or when the BBS says READY TO BEGIN X}MODEM TRANSFER),press to go to the TERMINAL MENU, then press "D" for OWNLOAD.Enter the filename as you want i}t on your disk, and press RETURN. TheACETERM will begin the transfer immediately, and will cue the senderto beg}in transmission. Watch and wait until the transfer is complete.Note that you will not always see the exact number of} sectors sent asa program may use on a disk. You may abort a transfer by pressing andholding the button. To }PLOAD a program, the same procedure is used, except that youwill be cued when to begin by the receiver. Wait t}o see a bar, growingslowly (something like this:______________(or when the BBS system tells you to begin), then got t}o your menu andselect PLOAD, give your filename, and RETURN. The rest is the same andtotally automatic.NOTE: Occasio}nally XMODEM transfers will get "out of sync" and will seemto just stop. Wait at least a minute to see if it will recover} by itself. If not and the system does not abort by itself, press and hold toabort the transfer, or in the worst }case, a may be necessary todisconnect. This can happen with any software. źThere is about 1}K of memory left after the ACE80 is installed in a48K machine.
