INSTRUCTIONS ____________ Th)}e Computer Aided Instruction Construction Set (CAICS) consists of a program that allows you to design your own instruct)}ional quizzes. Ideal for parents who wish to help their children with schoolwork or for teachers in the classroom, t)}his program allows for programmed learning at each individual's own rate. It can also be used if two students wish t)}o study together, with each making up a series of questions to quiz the other. The purpose of the program is to enab)}le one to easily create a set of questions, answers, and explanations in such a way that a student may move quickly thr)}ough material he/she knows well but spend more time on areas less known. The format is as follows: First there is)} the question. The question may be of any length up to one full screen. This is then followed by the various alter)}native answers. The answers may also be up to one screen in length, although it would be advised that all the answers )}be able to be seen on the screen at the same time. There may be any number of alternative answers. The person is t)}hen asked to choose the alternative that best answers the question. The computer then prints the appropriate response)} for the answer typed. If the person answered the question correctly, he goes on to the next question. If not, he i)}s given a second chance. Once all the questions have been answered, a percentage score is given. To use the const)}ruction set, load the program then type "RUN". You will then see the main menu. To create a new set of questions, u)}se option 2 from this menu. When asked for a filename, type any 8 characters that may be used as a legal filename. Hop)}efully you will choose something that resembles the topic for the questions. Any combination of capital letters and/)}or numbers may be used. You will then be asked for a 20 character description of the topic of the questions. This )}description will be displayed anytime the construction set is asking for the user to choose among sets of questions, so)} be concise and specific. Next, you are asked to give the number of questions. Answer with the number you will ente)}r AT THIS TIME - remember that more questions may be added later. If you are going to type in a large number of ques)}tions, it is best to underestimate the number you will type at this sitting than to overestimate. From this point on)}, you will be asked to supply the question, alternative answers, correct answer, and appropriate responses for each q)}uestion you enter until you complete the set. The program will then state that the file has been created and you will b)}e returned to the main menu. EDITING _______ To edit an already existing set of quest)}ions, choose option 3 from the main menu. It is probably best if you read the instructions included in the program t)}he first couple of times you use this section, although the prompts really should be adequate to guide you. Choose )}which file you wish to edit from the list given. You are then asked if you wish to add to this file, delete questions)} from the file, or simply exit back to the main menu (if you have made a mistake in getting here). When adding to t)}he file, simply follow the prompts as in the main menu option 2 above. The only difference is that when you have com)}pleted each question the program asks if you have additional questions. If not, the file is rewritten to include the)} new questions and then you are returned to the main menu. When deleting questions from the file, simply type a "Y" )} followed by RETURN or even just RETURN to keep a question, "N" followed by RETURN to kill the question. After all t)}he questions have been checked, the program asks if you really want to make the changes. Here's where you can get out )}if you have made a mistake. Type Y if you wish the file modified or N if you do not wish the chang)}es made. In either case you will be returned to the menu. Running through a set of questions is easy with main menu)} option 1. After choosing which set of questions you wish to try, you are asked each question in the set just as out)}lined at the beginning of the article. Main menu option 4 returns you to DOS, and option 5 returns you to BASIC. )}And that's it. Enjoy! of the article. Main menu option 4 returns you to DOS, and option 5 returns you to BASIC.
