Now you'll be able to go beyond the middle and fa}r east missions included with the original disk. If you're tired of bombing Libya, Egypt, Vietnam, Syria, Iraq, and th}e Persian Gulf, then this program is for you. With the help of an atlas, you'll be able to construct bombing missio}ns for Russia, China, and wherever your imagination takes you. If a current event in the real world gets you steamin}g mad, you can take it out on that country with a new mission and your trusty old F-15 Strike Eagle combat plane. Th}e original F-15 Strike Eagle disk from Microprose and a joystick are required to effectively use this program. } PRELIMINARY STEPS The first thing you need to do in order to use F-15 CS is to copy all the files from the origin}al F-15 Strike Eagle game disk to a blank formatted disk. Since the original game disk is copy-protected, the copied} disk will not work without some alteration. After you've made a copy of the original game disk, copy F15CNSET.BAS} to this same disk and RUN it. The main menu screen will appear at the top and the first mission map (Libya) will ap}pear at the bottom. Use the up and down arrow keys (without CONTROL) to highlight the "UNPROTECT" option and press R}ETURN. A warning appears asking you not to give out unprotected copies of F-15 Strike Eagle. Please honor this!! Pre}ss START to begin the unprotection process. Step #1 warns you to use only a copy of the original disk. I can't stre}ss the importance of this enough. If you should accidentally damage the original disk, the program will not run, and} you'll lose one of the best games around for the Atari. Press RETURN if you're using a copy of the original. Step #}2 of this part of F-15 CS will reconfigure the disk. Step #3 will write a temporary file to the disk. Step #4 will te}ll you exactly what to do after that in order to make the copy disk work. Step #5 gives you the option of printing ou}t the instructions to your printer or going back to the main menu. Turn your printer on and press RETURN for the print}out or ESCAPE to return to the main menu. After following the instructions in Step #4, the copied disk should boot} and run fine. If it does not, or if you get an error message during step #2 saying that this program cannot unprote}ct the F-15 Strike Eagle program in the disk drive, you may send the F-15 Construction Set disk back for a refund. Not} all versions of F-15 Strike Eagle are the same. Some may have different copy protection schemes than the one I had w}hen I wrote this program. Since F15 CS will not work on a copy protected disk (actually it will work if you write ne}w DASH*.MAP files to the original disk, but this is NOT recommended), you are entitled to a full refund if the UNPROTEC}T option does not work. If it does, you're ready to edit the mission maps. Press ESCAPE to get back to the main men}u. OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN MENU OPTIONS *** MISSION *** The original F-15 Strike Eagle comes with 7 missi}ons, each with their own DASH*.MAP file. The MISSION option lets you view the characteristics of each mission on the} original disk. When designing a new map, it is important that you consult these mission descriptions. You should h}ave the same number of targets, at least one home base, and use the same file name when saving the new map (unless yo}u save it under a different filename and rename it later). If you don't do this, some strange things may happen when } playing the game. After looking at a particular mission description, you may want to go to the I/O menu (see below) a}nd load in that map. Then you can return to the main menu and EDIT the map. *** EDIT *** You will n}eed a joystick plugged into port 1 in order to edit a map. To do the editing you can either load a map in from the I/O} menu (see below) or start from a clear map with nothing on it by using the CLEAR option (see below). After you sele}ct the EDIT option, an arrow pointer and various map symbols will be displayed in the middle of the screen. Use the }joystick to move the arrow to a new map symbol. Note that when the pointer is over letters, you change the letter by }pushing the joystick up or down instead of left or right. This allows you to put titles and symbols on your map. Any t}itle should be kept short and at the borders of the map, since they can clutter the map up and even conflict with gam}e play. Choose one of the map symbols by pressing the joystick button. When you do that the word SELECT will appear }in inverse video indicating that you can end editing with that map symbol by pressing SELECT. The map coordinates wi}ll appear below SELECT. A white cursor will appear on the map at the indicated coordinates. Move it around using th}e joystick. Place the selected map symbol on the map by pressing the joystick button. You can add or delete airport}s, rivers, home bases, missile silos, land, water, and targets. Putting the rivers together with the three appropria}te symbols will take some practice. Make sure you always put at least one home base on the map and no more targets t}han are indicated by the mission description. Press SELECT to end editing with a particular map symbol and then pres}s OPTION to get back to the main menu. *** CLEAR *** This option allows you to clear the map area and m}ake it either all land or water. After selecting CLEAR from the main menu, press "L" or "W" to clear the map display} area. Press ESCAPE to abort this option. *** I/O *** Choosing this option will bring up a sub-menu t}hat lets you perform some file manipulation options. Pressing ESCAPE before selecting one of these options will retu}rn you to the main menu. Pressing ESCAPE after selecting one of them will abort that option and return you to the I/O } menu. You should not use an extender when entering a filename for these options. The program assumes a ".MAP" extend}er for any filename you enter (also with the DIRECTORY option, it displays only those files with the ".MAP" extender)}. When the program does any disk I/O, the top half of the screen will flash strange colors and characters. This is be}cause of the display list interrupt used to change character sets halfway down the screen. Follow the simple prompts} for entering filenames for these options. *** UNPROTECT *** See PRELIMINARY STEPS above for a descriptio}n on using this option. FLYING HIGH I hope you have a lot of fun with this program. F15-Strike Eagle }from Microprose is a super game for the Atari. Please, please, please honor their copyright and do not give out unprot}ected copies of the game to others.
