Welcome to the tutorial for the Codesmiths Newsletter Reader. The Newsletter reader was written with the express purpo}se of making the reading of disk-based newsletters a rewarding rather than trying experience. No offence, intended, please.}Press a key when the border appears.!#PI Knew you could! This program is in the public domain. It may not be sold for a p}rofit. If it is sold, it may be sold only for the cost of the media upon which it is enscribed. This program is copyrighted.} It may not be re- or over-copyrighted. Keep it off Compuserve.!#PEnough of the psuedolegal jibber-jabber. This file giv}es a brief outline of the functions built into the CNR (Codesmiths Newsletter Reader). The CNR reads text files. The text f}iles should be AtariWriter style, I.E. Carriage Returns at paragraph ends, not at line ends. The CNR (as you have doubtless }noticed) automatically word-wraps and microspace justifies.!#PTo control the features the CNR supports, you must embed comm}ands in your text. The command format goes like this:[RETURN]!#(Commandletter)(Optional options)[RETURN]You should have }noted that each command must be on a line of its own. If you do not place the !# (bangpound as we call it here in the early }A.M.) at the absolute beginning of a line, the command will be ignored. All commands start with !#. Do not start any paragr}aphs with !#, or the CNR will try to interpret them as commands. All Commands have a command letter. This tells the CNR whi}ch function you want done. The command letter immediatly follows the !#. Thusly: !#Q or !#L.Some commands have parameters}. These will be detailed in the relevant sections. The CNR prints anything that is not a command. Anything. Even is it is} classified, just like the New York Times does.!#P Command List !#L - Load Font !#F - Select Font !#W - Wait for a }Key !#P - Page Break !#H - (HOME) Clear Screen !#B - Set Colors !#S - Load Screen File !#G - Global Borders and Line Spa}cing !#M - Menu Option Definition !#K - Menu selection !#I - If statement !#X - Execute sub-file !#T - Top of file !#C }- Chain to file !#Q - End file !#: - Label !#J - Jump to Label !#E - Check for File Existence!#P Command Description}s !#L(0|1)"Filename" or !#L(0|1)X - Load fontLoads a font into one of the two font buffers availible. The number paramet}er (0 or 1) selects which buffer to load to. The filename must be in quotes. X will be explained under !#KFont files are }1024 bytes long, and are in the same format as the font data stored in rom at $E000. Proportionality information is derived }from the font data itself.!#P !#F - Select FontSelects either one of the two fonts for printing by the program.Selecti}ng a font that has not been loaded is a bad thing, and will get you spanked.!#P !#W - Wait for a KeyThis pauses printing} until you press an key. Note that whenever the computer is waiting for a key, the border around the screen becomes a differ}ent color than the background.!#P !#P - Page Break=Halts the printing, and waits for a key. Note that the CNR will wait} for a key if the screen is about to scroll, so this is useful only as a chapter break or something like that.!#P !#H - (H}OME) Clear ScreenBlindly and instantly clears the screen and starts printing from the top. Place this after a !#K for clea}ner screens.!#P !#B(@-O)(0-7)(0-7) - Set backgroung and foreground colorsThe first parameter has 16 possible values, for} the sixteen possible hues for the background screen color. Hue 0, or grey, is entered with a @ (at sign). The color hues a}re entered using letters a-o.The second parameter is the intensity of the background. 0-7 is the range, with 0 being darke}st, and 7 being lightest. The third parameter is the brightness of the text itself. 0-7 is the range, and this should be di}fferent from the background intensity, or your text will be invisible.!#P !#S(G|4|2)"filename" or !#S(G|4|2)X - Load Scree}n FileThis clears the text screen, sets a graphic mode, and loads 7680 bytes of image data directly so the screen. The fou}r color registers are stored as the last four bytes of the file, in 712-708-709-710 order. This is the Micropainter format.}G sets Graphics 9 - 16 color grey scale.4 sets Graphics 31 - 4 color 160x1922 sets Graphics 24 - 2 color 320x192After lo}ading the image, the CNR waits for a key, then returns to a clear text screen and continues printing.!#P !#G(LM)(RM)(LS) -} Global Borders and Line SpacingSets three important global settings. LM is the left margin, default here is two. You may} set this to 0-39, but get wise, if you try to be cute, the program will clean your clock.RM is the right margin, default 2}. For the widest possible screen, use 0 for left and right margins.LS is line spacing, default is 6. This is the number o}f scan lines MINUS FOUR that is how much further down each line of text is printed. 4 is normal for the computer, but the te}xt runs together.Examples: Default setting !#G226 Wide Screen !#G006 More Text !#G004 Big Mes}s !#G000!#P !#M(0-9)"filename" - Menu Option DefinitionSets the option string referred to by the number parameter to the} filename parameter. This, when combined with the !#K command makes this a powerful program.Example:!#P !#M1"D1:Editorial}" !#M2"D1:Letters" !#M3"D1:Basic"This example paves the way for the next command, !#K.!#P !#K(LOW)(HIGH) - Menu select}ionThis command waits for a number key to be pressed. The number must be greater that or equal to low, and less that or eq}ual to high. The number pressed is stored internally. See the Example.Example:!#P Simple Newsletter Menu 1. Monthly }Editorial stuff 2. Letters Yall sent us 3. Basic whaetever Your selection? !#M1"D1:Editorial" !#M2"D1:Letters" !#M3"}D1:Basic" !#K13Figure it out. Powerfull, eh? Not yet. X when used in place of a filename means use the filename we store}d with the !#M command, instead of an X.!#P !#X"filename" or !#XX - Execute sub-fileReads and prints and executes a subr}outine-like file. When combined with the above example:!#P Simple Newsletter Menu 1. Monthly Editorial stuff 2. Lette}rs Yall sent us 3. Basic whaetever Your selection? !#M1"D1:Editorial" !#M2"D1:Letters" !#M3"D1:Basic" !#K13 !#XXTh}is prints a greeting, a menu and a prompt. The sets some internal variables (the !#M statements), waits for the user to sele}ct an option, then prints which ever file the user selected (via the !#XXcommand). You could also use something like this:} !#X"D1:Masthead"And your standard newsletter masthead would be printed. This is sort of like and include file, if you ca}n relate. The implications are staggering, no?!#P !#T - Top of fileThis reexecutes the current file, so the above examp}le would be complete thusly:!#P !#H Simple Newsletter Menu 1. Monthly Editorial stuff 2. Letters Yall sent us 3. Bas}ic whaetever 0. Quit Your selection? !#M1"D1:Editorial" !#M2"D1:Letters" !#M3"D1:Basic" !#K03- get a key 0 to 3 !#I0 }- explained below !#Q - explained below !#H - clear screen !#XX - execute selected file !#T - go to top!#P !#C"file}name" or !#CX - Chain to fileSimilar to !#X, except that the current file is ended, and the new file replaces it. Like tra}nsferring busses. There is no way to return to the previous file using !#C. !#C is a GOTO more or less.!#P !#I(0-9) - If} statementSkips the next line if the number key pressed was NOT the parameter.Example: !#K03 - accepts 0-3 !#I0 - i}s it a 0? !#Q - YES, quit !#XX - NO, execute something.!#P !#Q - End fileObvious. This is not required at the en}d of a file, it just serves for a useful way to exit a subroutine or loop when you test with an if command.!#P !#:(text) -} Define a labelThis marks a position in the file that you will be able to jump to with the !#J command.!#P !#J(text) - J}ump to labelThis causes the CNF to skip all instructions and text until a !#: label is found that matches the jump command.}Note this will only jump FOREWARD.!#P !#E"filename" or !#EX - Make sure file existsThis command will check for the exi}stence of a file (or X). If the file does not exist, the CNR waits for a key, then re-checks for the file. This command wil}l not allow the CNR to continue until the file it wants is found. Use this command to verify that the user has switched disk}s if you asked him to.!#P Final NoteThere's one more thing. The CNR ALWAYS opens a file called "D1:MAIN" and executes i}t. If you are not happy with this, tough. Also, the program does NOT assume a font, you must explicitly load one.My D1:MA}IN looks like this: !#L0"D1:ROMAN.F" !#C"D3:MAIN"Because I have a hard drive and base my work off drive three, this shor}t MAIN loads a font and chains to the main I have on drive three.PLEASE explore this program. It's more powerful than you }think!Sean Puckett 9/18/88 2:28 AM!#P A Users Note! From Kris Holtegaard Sysop Of The WQNR BBS # 1 and WQNR BBS # 2.
