When all theletters have been ente&}red, thephrase will spell out a quotationfrom a book, article, etc. In thepuzzles made by Mrs. Kingsley (andother good pu&}zzlemakers) theinitial letters of the wordlistalso spell out the name of theauthor of the quote and the workfrom which it&} is taken; I'm notthat good a puzzlemaker yet!In this computer version, much of the tedious work of getting thecorrect le&}tter in the right spaceis done for you - and there is noneed for an eraser! The computercan clear mistakes instantly. The&} entries in the WORDLIST may besingle words or phrases. Those thatare longer than 12 letters may becontinued in the next W&}ORD, andsuch continuation will be indicatedin the DEFINITION. The words aregenerally not unusual "crosswordpuzzle" words,&} but should befamiliar to a reasonably well-readperson.Now, about the DEFINITIONS them-selves.They are usually synonym&}s or shortdefinitions, but not always of themost common meaning of the word. Agood dictionary is a handyreference. Also a&} good atlas. Butwatch for any ending with aquestion mark or an exclamationpoint; those are probably notstraightforward de&}finitions.Perhaps a pun? There are someconventions regarding thedefinitions which you should watchfor;1) A semicolon (;&}) separatingdefinitions indicates differentmeanings of the word, or morecorrectly different words thathappen to look the &}same. Forexample; a definition for LEADmight be "leash; heavy, dark greymetal".2) If the WORD is really more thanone wo&}rd that is indicated in theclue, as: (2 wds.)3) A word that is usuallyhyphenated would be marked: (hyph.)or (compound). &}Also, a contractionis indicated by (contr.).4) A slang word would be marked(colloq.) In addition it might bemarked (Br.)&} for British usage or(Aust.) for Australian. Likewise,if the word is in a foreignlanguage, it would be indicated;Fr., Sp.&}, Ger., etc. A foreign wordnow common in English usage willnot be so marked.5) Sometimes the clue for a wordwill not be &}a definition per se,but a quotation with the word (orphrase) missing; such as: "A _ intime saves nine", which should lead&}you to answer: STITCH. (Of course,if the quote is followed by '?' or'!' you should think in terms of apun or joke answer.&}In later puzzles, we might feature'cryptic' clues, which are notdefinitions at all, but secondarypuzzles to solve. But mo&}re aboutthat later, should the need arise. If you have never triedDouble-Crostics before you might bewondering how to go &}about solvingone. Here's the way I go about it:I start at the top of the WORDLISTand work my way down to the end, answerin&}g those I can figure out -or making some guesses. If I canget something down for about athird of the words, I figure I'mr&}eady to tackle the PHRASE. I lookat it to see if I can recognizeany words or parts of words, tryingto guess at a phrase or&} sentence.Sometimes the puzzle title can giveyou a hint as to the subjectmatter.Look for one-letter words; thoseare pr&}obably 'A' or 'I' - not forsure, but that's the most likelything. Use the 'flash' command(CNTRL-F) to see what WORD it is&}in. Does knowing that there is an'A' or 'I' in that position helpwith that word? Likewise, check thetwo-letter words, espe&}cially onesin which you already have oneletter. There are not that manytwo-letter words. If you see 'T_'you have probably&} found an 'O'. If you see some 'impossible' lettercombinations, such as 'THK' thattells you that the WORD with the'K' in i&}t is probably wrong. Trychanging the 'K' to a vowel; doesthat help with that WORD? If youthink you can guess a part of as&}entence in the PHRASE, type it inand see what does for the WORDS youskipped before. Any help?Don't be afraid to guess; it&}'s easyto erase mistakes on the computer(CNTRL-D). Move back and forthbetween the PHRASE and the WORDS(CNTRL-J), trying t&}hings.Really stuck? Save your work todate (CNTRL-S) so you can come backto it later. Or print out what youhave so far (C&}NTRL-P); that willalso give you a list of theDEFINITIONS you can take to thelibrary with you. Or, better yet,to show to C&}harlie at work. Youknow, the guy who's so hot oncrossword puzzles. Maybe he canhelp you. (Watch out though; onceCharlie s&}ees AUTOCROSTICS he mightwant to borrow your Atari!)But the most important thing is toHAVE FUN! That's what AUTOCROSTICS&}are for.And then, when you get really goodat solving them you might want totry your hand at creating them! &} ___________________________________INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTOCROSTICS V1.4______________________________&}_____Load Turbo Basic XL and runPLAYER.TBX.
