(I do not know ifit will work on upgrad}ed XL or 800's)LOADING GAME:1-Boot DOS 2.5 with RAMDISK.COMpresent.2-Put program disk in drive 13-Type RUN "D:XEBALL"}THE GAME:In XE Ball the outcome of an atbat isdetermined by one pitch only. Thismakes for a very fast game and makesposs}ible the playing of an entirebest-of-seven series at one sitting. If you're a real baseball fanI think you'll realize t}hat whathappens in the course of XE BALL isjust like real baseball. You mustchoose the correct pitch for eachsituation. F}or example, throw afastball to a power hitter and hemight just hit it out of the park.Need a double-play? What pitch would}you suggest? Can the player yourbringing in hit against the lefty onthe mound? Is this the right spot tobring in your ace} reliever? Don'tforget you can't use him for the nexttwo games! FIELDERS: When you look at the fielder'sscreen you wi}ll see 15 playerslisted, two for each position exceptfirst base. Each statistic you see listed isvery important in deter}mining thetype of team you draft. This is what the labels you seemean:FLD- "fielding value" from 1 to 3 1-poor fie}lder 2-average fielder 3-excellent fielderR-batting average against right handed pitchersL-batting average against }leftiesSP- Speed of player 1-slow runner 2-fast runner (in Ver 2.0 slow runners can now steal to}o, but get caught often)P- Power 0-no power 1-power (only power hitters hit homeruns) When selecting a team you must} besure you have at least one player foreach position. Players may play outof position, but this maydrastically reduce yo}ur defense. When you've chosen your team (thisgame uses the AL DH rule) thecomputer adds up all the FLD's,excluding the} DH, and determines ateam fielding rating. So here's howthe rating translates intoperformance: 23:excellent defens}ive team 21-22:average defense under 20:poor defense This rating determines how well youpickoff runners, hold} runner on base, how many errors you make, etc.PITCHERS: Perhaps the greatest improvementin Ver 2.0 is series play. This} meansyou (and the computer) must use theentire staff. On the pitcher's screenyou will see the staff of 10 startersand re}lievers. This is what these labels mean: Ace:a pitcher who can use all pitches 1st-line}:can't use the best fastball 2nd-line:can't use the best fastball and the curveball Also given is th}e the # of inningsa pitcher can go and whether thepitcher is left/right handed and ifhe's a relief or starter.PITCHERS (}cont'd) If you bring in a reliever who canonly go 3 inning in the 2nd inningthen he can not come out for the 6th."9+" m}eans he can go the distance. *In series play any pitcher used ina game must sit out the next twogames before he can used }again. When pitching you may notice thatin an inning where a lot of men havereached base one of your best pitchesdisapp}ears from the screen. This isbecause your pitcher is gettingtired. You may replace him wheneveryou wish. If you don't repl}ace him hewill regain all his pitches for thenext inning.PLAYER AVAILABILITY: You will notice when referring tothe p}layer's stats tables during thecourse of a game that some playershave dots at the bottom of theirboxes. This means that a }player isunavailable to play in the game. Andin the case of pitchers you'll noticethis dot appearing for the game inprogr}ess & the next two games theysit out.ROSTER SCREEN: This will give you your battingorder during the game. It tells you}which player is on which base (thenumber on the far right), the DH, andthe player presently up at bat (thearrow on the fa}r left). This screenis available during the game.THE PLAYING FIELD: The playing screen is fairlystraight forward. In th}e bottom rightcorner of the screen you are giventhe hitter's #, his batting average, whether he hits with power, if thepit}cher is right or left handed andthe fielding strength of the team onthe field. On the playing surface thepitcher's # ap}pears on the pitchingmound and on each base a 0, 1 or 2.A "0" means the base is empty; a "1"means that a slow runner is on} and"2" is a fast runner. The top right corner is your swingor pitch selections. *NB:This documentation is availableon}line here by pressing .THE COMPUTER'S TEAM: In XEBall the computer doesn'tcheat! It has access to only the samepl}ayers and plays you do and doesn'tknow what play you'll use any morethan you know what it'll do. Still,it'll prove a tough} opponent; usingpinch hitters & runners, & relieverswhen the occasion warrants. But, Itwon't substitute indiscriminately. }Soif you are being beaten badly by thecomputer (not unlikely, at first!) itmay never bring ANY players! Also, the comput}er will only bringin players legally. It must rest it'spitchers just as you do. *The computer's players arenumbered the }same as yours: your #8is the same as his #8. So you cancheck on the computer's players bylooking at your own player's stat}s.MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: *There are a few situations whichafter you've chosen a swing or pitchwill be a non-result. This }is not anerror in the program (think of it asa foul ball, etc) *The the program will allow youswing and pitch options n}ot legal forevery player. For example, a playerwithout power will not have a"Longbelt" option displayed, but youcan still} type in that option and itwill allow the play. This means thatyou are on the honor system to onlyuse the plays displayed.} *The program is not structured toplay a game over 18 innings, or morethan 7 games in a series.(cont'd) *Version 2.}0 will detect the end ofthe game. When you see "GameOver" onthe screen merely strike any key andit will give you the final} linescore. *Sometimes during a game there maybe an extended pause while thecomputer considers player moves. *I wrote} the game so that for anysingle-character input you juststrike the appropriate key, but forother input, such as team names}, youmust finish with a RETURN.& FINALLY: XE Ball should be fullytrapped and bug free, but if you haveany troubles pleas}e let me know.-Doug (CIS:72750,1173). PLAY BALL!!!!ENDrapped and bug free, but if you haveany troubles pleasF
