SMART ART II ------------So. You are a bit confused aboutSmart Art II. Understandable, being a ~}complex drawing package, there are many things to adjust to.If you have been using MicroIllustrator or MicroPainter or any}of the other drawing packages outthere in the commercial world, and if you are new to computer art, awhole new concept of }things youcould never do with pencil and inksnow exists. Before I dive in and startthrowing examples and stuff, let me}explain some of the benefits andlimitations of Smart Art II (hereafter called "SM2").First, SM2 is written primarily inB}asic. This makes it slow in a fewplaces, most noticeably in thecursor update (a cursor indicateswhere a change is to be m}ade next). That is really the onlydisadvantage I can think of (hehheh).Okay... If you are familiar withother Atari draw}ing packages, readthis next paragraph. If not, readit anyway! The way SM2 stores pictures onyour disk is nearly the sa}me asMicroPainter does. This is the"Unpacked" format (my quotes). Micro Illustrator (same as Koala, Atari Artist, and th}e light penpackage) stores the picture in a"Compressed" format which takes upless space on the disk. If youwish to use y}our SM2 pictures withthese packages - no can do(picture file conversion utilitiesare available in the public domainthough})! The converse worksthough. Both "compressed" Micro Illustratorand normal MicroPainter picturesmay now be directly load}ed into SM2with all colors properly set aswell!! SM2 uses Display ListInterrupts to allow many morecolors on the scree}n at once thanwith MicroPainter or Graphics 15(ANTIC mode E) which allows only 4.If you have ever looked at thedirector}y of a disk with thesepictures on it, you probably noticed that they all were 62sectors long. SM2 pictures = 66sectors l}ong, the added length toallow for storage of the additionalcolor information. Now, about Controllers (ie;joystick, touch }pad, light pens, mouse, etc...), SM2 in it'soriginal form supports only thejoystick controllers (port #1,please). However,} by RUNning theSMARTTAB file, you can create afile called SM.OVL. When mergedwith SMARTART.V15 (the mainprogram); use of} your touch pad(Koala or Atari TTablet. NOTPowerpad, though) is allowed forall functions except for "ModifyBrush", which} still requires aJoystick. I suggest that youCalibrate your TTablet (Short for"Touch Tablet") to rest in joystickport #2 }and keep a joystick in port#1. This may be fixed sometime, but no guarantees!I am presently working on a LightPen interf}ace for SM2 (won't thatbe funky!) but as yet (12/30/84)have not ordered a Pen yet. Weshall see. Hey, I'm not gettngpaid! }Oh. About the Mouse I mentioned. I have built a mouse forthe Atari Computers and have beenshowing it around. It has genera}tedquite a bit of interest! Now, advantages of SM2 (I like thispart!). DIsplay list interrupt forcolor mixing vertically.} You canchange the color of any "Paint pot"at any line on the screen. Well, every other line. So, you can havea background} made up of a shadedblue sky, going from white into adeep blue, a grassy backgroundblending into a dirt path, all withone} "color" and still have 3 other"pots" to play with! You like? The main menu has an option called"Modify Brush" that allows} you tochange the "stamp" of the cursor. So, when you press the button, thecursor STAMPs down and leaves animage of itself} in the picture.Speaking of color, you select thecolor of your stamp by pressing 1,2, 3 or 4; each number correpondingto} a color in the color bars (justbelow the text line in EDIT mode). My mother changed some brushes tolook like Christmas tr}ee ornamentsand we STAMPed them down in atreeish looking pattern in severaldifferent colors, then printed itout on our co}lor printer for areally nice Christmas card! Justthought I'd throw in that idea forfree! You have nine brushes to play wi}th,each brush is a 9x9 matrix (i.e. 9blocks up, 9 blocks across). Thebrushes you create can be saved todisk and loaded ba}ck, to alleviatehaving to recreate them when youbegin a new session.A LINE mode is provided for, wherinwhen the activati}ng trigger ispressed, a line formed from thebrush shape is drawn (albeitslowly) from the endpoint of thelast line or poin}t plotted. (editornote: upon rereading of this, itseems I have slipped into atutorial! oh. also, at the mainmenu press "E}" to get into the Editmode (no duh)) An option exists tomove the beginning endpoint of theline to another spot withoutdra}wing over other stuff. Some basic geometric shapes areprogrammed in, the CIRCLE, BOXOUTLINE, and the RECTANGLE. Thefuncti}on of these is kinda obvious, except for how we tell SM2 where todraw it and how big to make it. Toexplain this in greater }detail, letme begin a new paragraph...Here we are! Well, when you select(for example) the rectanglefunction, SM2 will as}k first for acenter point for the circle, andthen for any point on it'scircumference. When SM2 wants apoint from you, the} cursor becomesa target sight shape and flashesrapidly (this is new to youCISers!). Move the cursor to theplace where you} want that point tobe and press the trigger. Thisis known as a POINT. Two points arecalled a Kitty Corner for reasonsthat} will soon become obvious.Press the B function for rectangle(like that? B for rectangle? MeansBOX! gotcha! hehehe) SM2 wi}ll askfor a corner of the box and thenfor the opposite across(diametricaly disinclined? KittyCorner!) corner of the box. }Thistaking all the space between thetwo points and fill it up with yoursolid color. The BOX OUTLINEfunction "O" places th}e perimiterof the box between the two points, not the solid box. Circle is somewhat different. Thefirst point will be the} center ofthe circle, and the second pointwill be on the circumfrence. Acircle in SM2, when plotted, looksalmost precisly} circular. Butwatchout! The actual ratio ofheight/width is 100/57! This canmess you up if you are doingdrafting work or w}hatever. There isno disk, or filled circle functionfor reasons of space and etc...Speaking of drafting, the "-"function }will give you the distancein pixels (the smallest dot) fromthe last point you plotted to thecurrent cursor position. If yo}uwanted to mark 17 dots to the left, you would not need to count themout, just estimate and press "-".Then you can adjust }to get itexact. This makes SM2 especiallysuited for Graph work!On to the neat stuff. We have afew goodies here in the fi}lldepartment: Floodfill, Design fill,Repeat last fill, and Alternatingfill; all selected by their capitalletter.Floodfi}ll is the standard fillroutine with a twist: it remembersthe shape of the area it filled, after it fills it. Every horizont}alline it fills is stored in memory, for use with the Designer or Repeatfill functions. Do this: Build acircle on the scre}en in color 2(press 2, then C for circle. putthe first point in the middle ofthe screen, and the second about3/4 the way }up from the bottom).Make sure the cursor is inside thecircle before you start filling! Now. Press 3 and F. SM2 will switch}to color 3 and fill the circle withit (the fill is slow because of thestoring of the lines, the DLIs inthe background, an}d the highresolution mode the screen is in).Wasn't that neat? Not impressed?Well, we'll see 'bout that!Press 4 for colo}r 4, R for repeatfill (we will not fill a new area, but use the stored pattern from thefloodfill we just did to draw apatt}ern OVER the filled area) and5. The character after the 5 is anyAtascii key from 32 to 95. Eachvalid key has it's own patt}ernassigned to it.The numbers from 1 to 9 approximatea tone scale you can use to mixcolors with. 5 is a 50%/50% mix oft}he NEW color (color 4) and the oldbackground (color 3 in this case). The result should be a checkeredpattern inside the ci}rcle. You canchoose different colors anddifferent patterns by pressing thecolor number (if you wish to changeit), then R }(Repeat last fill) andthe pattern key. If you want toexplore all the patterns, feelfree; there are 64 different ones!On t}he other hand, if you want tochange them, or just look at themall at once, just use your favoritecharacter set editor (mak}e sure itcan handle GRAPHICS 1 & 2 charactersets. I personally love "The NextStep" from On-line, but most anywill do). Ju}st load the file SM.SETand there it is!Designer fill takes that idea onestep farther. In one swell foop, it1: does a flo}odfill on the area youindicate with a color differentthan the background (this is tofind the extent of that area),Repeat }fills it with it's originalcolor solid (restore the area tothe way it was before thefloodfill), and Repeat fills againwit}h the correct color and patternkey. Whew! Complicated, eh? Try afew small circles or box outlinesand see how it does the j}ob!Alternating fill is a solution to aproblem I was having withMicroPainter: What if you want tofill over a patterned ar}ea?MicroPainter doesn't understandthat the pattern is actually apattern, just looks like a seriesof very small areas to f}ill. Well, the solution is here. Alternatingfill will alternatly fill an areawith 2 colors. This will quicklyeat away most} simple patterns, anda combination of several differentAlternating fills will clear awayeven the toughest patterns! Whent}he Alternating fill has doneenough, just tap the space bar andit will quit when the fillfinishes.Beware, though! An Alte}rnating fillcan get out of hand! if leftunchecked is will destroy yourdrawing as quickly as it erases apattern, so beware}!A few caveats about the fillsoftware exists. If the area youtry to store into memory is toobig, the program will do one} ofthree things depending on what fillyou were in at the time: Floodfill,it will stop dead, so you can eraseit with Repea}t fill, or continue bydoing other floodfills. Alternatingfill, continue. It assumes that youwant to clean up the area anyw}ay,so it chugs along. Designer fill, will stop, erase any changes itmade, restoring the screen to whereit was before the f}ill started. Also, if the fill's stack spacegets too crowded the screen displaywill crash. This is remedied bypressing ES}C and entering the EDITmode again. Just remember to breakup complicated fills into smallerpieces, by putting small blocks }inthe way or whatever.Really, this .DOC file does notcover a quarter of what Smart ArtII can do, but it should get yous}tarted and you'll be able todiscover the rest for yourself!Written with blood, sweat and DietCoke by the Author of Smart }Art II:Sean Puckett. Press S, type the number of the p%`}aint pot to change. The cursor will change to a flashing horizontal bar. Push the joystick left or right to change colo%a}rs, up or down to move the cursor. Pressing the button while moving up or down will copy the color from the last line%b} to the new one, a kind of paint, if you will. Press any key to resume normal drawing.D - Designer Fill D can fill an %c}area with any pattern of the 64 in memory. Press D, then the keyboard key corresponding to the pattern you wish to fill%d} with. REMEMBER, if the area is too con- voluted, the progam not complete it.M - Magnify mode toggle Use M to gain a c%e}lose-up view of the screen area. The magnify mode colors are only valid for the line the cursor is on. Most commands op%f}erate the same when magnify is on.1-4 - Select colors Push the numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4 to reset the present color (pc). %g}The pc is the color almost everything is drawn with.F - Flood fill F will fill an area denoted by the color under th%q}b%DOS SYSb*)DUP SYSb SAUTORUN SYSb_HELP DOCb oSMARTDSKDOCbY{SMARTARTDOCblSMARTARTV15b@SM CDEbSSM SETb/XSMHELP bSMARTTABBASb SMLOADERBASb TITL SETbBRUSHES bBSPACE PICe cursor with the pc and store the area's shape in the Line Buffer. REMEMBER, if the area is too convoluted, the progra%r}m will stop the fill, you can erase it with another fill over it, or fill a different area. - Return to menu The <%s}ESC> key () will return you to the main menu leaving screen and colors intact.L - Line mode While in line mode, the %t}cursor is followd around the screen by a line showing the path of the line that will be drawn when the button is pres%u}sed. This takes a little while, be patient.P - Point mode Point mode is the standard drawing fare, press the button an%v}d the brush leaves a mark on the screen.O - Box outline First, let me explain Kitty Corner. Kitty Corner is my way of %w}having you specify a rectangle for me to do something to. When Kitty Corner is mentioned, here's what you do: move th%x}e blinking cursor to one corner of the rectangle and press the button. Then move the cursor to the diagonally opposite %y}(how about diametrically disinclined) corner and again press the button. In some cases you may need to do this again%z} for a second rectangle. Box outline: Kitty Corner a rec- tangle and the rectangle will be outlined using the current b%{}rush pattern on the pc.B - Filled box Draws a solidly filled area colored in the pc. use Kitty Corner to denote your%|} rectangle.C - Circle C also uses Kitty Corner. The first point will be the center of the circle, the second will be o%}}n the circumfrence. The circle will be drawn using the current brush and the pc. Note: the circle is only circular on%~} the screen! The actual height/width ratio is 100/57.I - Pixel increment Specify a Kitty Corner, and the computer will%} add 1 to every pixel color value in the rectangle. Note: Pixel incrementing the same box four times will return it to%} it's original condition.R - Repeat last fill R is used in conjunction with both D (designer fill) and F (flood fill).%} R uses the same Line Buffer data for another pattern or color. It can be used to restore an erroneous fill to its las%}t color.X - Expand Gr.7 This is useful only to expand some pictures saved in Gr.7 format. X enlarges the top half of t%}he screen to full size.A - Alternating fill A will prompt you for entry of two colors. It will then repeatedly do a %}flood fill at the present cursor location with each color you specified in rapid succesion. Stop it by pressing any key%}. Note: this has the same rules as the flood fill for complex areas.E - Exchange colors E asks you for the old color, %}then needs a Kitty Corner. E will check each pixel in the box to see if it is the same as the old color, if so, It wi%}ll change the pixel to the pc.<> - Change brushes Either < or > will change your brush pattern. The brushes are 9x9 arra%}ys of a pattern, which is used quite frequently throughout the program. To change the shape of a brush, press 'M' at %}the main menu screen+ - Expand/Contract + will take a rectangle of any (KISS, keep it small, stupid) size and expand o%}r contract it to fit any other sized rectangle. Use two Kitty Corners to specify the two rectangles.= - Block copy D%}enote a Kitty Cornered rectangle and an UPPER LEFT corner of the destination area. A equalivalently sized copy will be %}transferred to the end zone.$ - About the author: This is me. Sean M. Puckett 693 n.w. 11 st.
