USING THE PROGRAM -----------------The Video T-t}itler program allows upto 12 screen pages of text to beentered and saved to disk ifrequired. Titles for the start of avid-u}eo program and credits for theend can be entered separately andsaved under different filenames. Each screen page consists -v}of up to3 lines of large size GR.2 textwith a maximum of 19 characters perline. This amount of text will befound to be ea-w}sily readable from anaverage viewing distance whenwatching tv.When the program is RUN you caneither load in a previousl-x}y savedsequence or create new titles. Ifyou are typing in a new sequence ascreen is displayed whichrepresents the video t-y}itle areawith Line number and page number atthe top. Lines of text are typed inat the bottom of the screen andthen immedi-z}ately shown in theirproper position by pressing RETURN.Titles can be positioned anywhereon the line by inserting spaceswh-{}ilst typing in the text. Gridlines allow accurate positioningif, for example, you want yourtitles centered. A blank line i-|}smade by just pressing RETURN. Whenall 3 lines have been typed in youare asked if the page is OK.Entering a "Y" will move-}} you to theoption of moving to the next page(RETURN) or finishing the titlesequence (enter "F"). A "N" willerase the page-~} for you to do itagain. To view the titles you must firstselect a colour by typing in theappropriate colour number 0-15.-}Although white titles (0) usuallyproduce the best results, colourssuch as red can be used to createthe mood of the video.-} Multi-coloured titles can also beproduced by mixing normal andinverse, upper and lower casecharacters.Having selected -}the colour, if youwish background music or speech toaccompany your titles you areinvited to insert an audio cassetteinto -}your Atari program recorderand press PLAY. A countdown isgiven before the title sequencestarts. This enables you toaccura-}tely time the starting ofyour video recorder by releasingits pause key. Note: use of theprogram recorder is entirelyoptio-}nal.The title sequence starts with ablank screen then the pages aredisplayed by gradually fading thetext in and out. The-} sequence endswith a blank screen forapproximately 10 seconds. Whilstthe screen is blank the VCR can bestopped. If requir-}ed, the music canbe turned off first at anappropriate moment by simplypressing the OPTION key. When thedisplay has finish-}ed you are askedif you want a re-run which willsend you back to the colour selectscreen where you may chose to viewyour t-}itles over again in adifferent colour. Holding down theOPTION key while the titles arerunning will also give you a reruno-}ption. When you are satisfied withyour titles entering a "N" to there-run option will give your theopportunity of saving y-}our titlesto a previously formatted diskusing the form Dn:FILENAME.EXT. CONNECTING THE EQUIPMENT --------------}-----------In order to record the titles ontovideo tape the computer must becoupled directly to the videorecorder. XL/XE-} machines, in commonwith many other systems, have bothmodulated UHF and composite videooutput sockets. For optimumrecordi-}ng quality it's stronglysuggested that the composite videoand audio sockets are used. AllVCR's have suitable composite vid-}eoand audio inputs and it is onlynecessary to make the connectionsusing appropriate leads and, ifnecessary, switch from t-}uner toextension (or camera) input. However, if the UHF socket is used,it should be connected to theaerial input socket o-}n the VCRusing the RF lead supplied withyour computer. A spare channel onthe VCR will need to be tuned tothe computer's o-}utput signal. Thisconnection will result in reducedpicture quality and may cause somepicture disturbances whilst thesigna-}l is being recorded, howeverthe recording should be steady whenplayed back. Again, composite videoconnections will give gr-}eatlyimproved picture quality and it'swell worth the trouble of obtainingthe appropriate leads.Whichever connection is u-}sed, a tvreceiver (or monitor) must beconnected and tuned to the outputfrom the VCR in the normal way. Ifconnected proper-}ly, the computer'svisual display should appear on thetv screen. With the title programrunning the sound from the Ataripro-}gram recorder (if used) shouldbe heard. Adjust the tv's screenbrightness, contrast, colour andtint so that you are seeing -}thebest possible picture display.Alternatively, you could connect astandard cassette recorder to theaudio input socket o-}f the VCR(providing you're using thecomposite video connection). Inpractice, it was found that unlessthe audio output of -}the computerwas matched to the audio output ofthe VCR, best audio quality wasobtained using a standard tapedeck. -} RECORDING THE TITLES --------------------Computer generated titles shouldnot be recorded onto the front ofexisti-}ng programmes as severedisturbances can occur when thepicture changes from titles toprogramme content. In order toavoid s-}uch problems the followingsequence should be employed.1. Record the opening titles (Atari computer).2. Record the pro-}gramme content (Video camera, second VCR or Atari computer).3. Record the closing credits (Atari computer). If a -}video recorder with insertediting facilities is available, computer generated titles can beinserted at any point in anexis-}ting program, usually withoutproblem. MAKING VIDEOS WITHOUT A CAMERA ------------------------------Although the pro-}duction of simpletitles and credits has beendescribed above, there is plenty ofscope for more ambitious graphics.Your Ata-}ri can be an impressiveeffects generator for creating yourown videos. If your VCR has an audio dub buttonyou could record-} computer generatedgraphics (eg. using art and designprograms or ready-to-use picturefiles) and then add the soundtrackaf-}terwards. The audio dub buttonenables you to record audio inputwithout affecting the existingvideo recording. For this you-}'llneed to attach a standard cassetterecorder to the VCR's audio inputas described above. If your VCR does not have an au-}diodub button you can still recordmusic and computer generatedgraphics in real time. If youreally wanted to get ambitious-} youcould try producing computergenerated sounds to accompany yourown videos. SUPER 8mm MOVIE CAMERA -----}------------------Perhaps you don't yet have either aVCR or a video camera. Don'tdespair!Interesting results can be obt-}ainedusing a Super 8mm XL movie camerawith this program. Your camera musthave the ability to film underExisting Light con-}ditions (hencethe camera's XL designation).Simply create your titles asdescribed above and film the tvscreen directly wi-}th your low lightmovie camera. For filming a colourtv screen KODAK recommends usingonly Type G Ektachrome 160 MovieFilm. -}Type G film is intended foruse without a lens filter under alllighting conditions, including acolour tv, and you should ob-}tainpleasing colour balance.Turn off or at least dim the roomlights and using your camera'sthrough-the-lens viewing, cen-}trethe titles displayed on the tvscreen in the viewfinder. Use atripod or at least place the cameraon a steady table surf-}ace in orderto obtain a rock steady picture.Later, when you get your filmdeveloped, you can splice yourfilmed titles and -}credits into yourhome movie reels.
