We call this the FORMAT MENU because here is where you tell DMG just how you wish your printout formatted. Through~} this menu, before sending any data to the printer, you can effect changes in the displayed values -- thus ch}anging the "format" or appearance of your printed text -- by pressing the key and, while holding it, }pressing the key that corresponds to the letter of the value you wish to modify. Some of these values may or ma}y not be modified, according to your previous selection from the MAIN MENU. - Displays the current font }in memory. To change it, press CTRL/F, insert the proper disk then merely enter the desired font's name. To k}eep the current font, press . - Once you've cycled through the font filename procedure, and if you}'ve selected MAIN MENU item #1, you will here have the opportunity to change the name of the file which you wish to p}rint. If you've made an error in typing on your first try, this is where to correct it. - Press CTRL/}D to change the displayed value, then press key 1-4 else press to keep the current value. Depending upon the } capabilities of your printer, there are four print densities available through DMG. Your printer's density sam}ples follow: .f/d1c1 density one .f/d2 density two .f/d3 density three } .f/d4 density four .f/d2c0 .bcu.DOT-MAGIC!!! page 4 }- To change SPACING, press CTRL/S and then hit number key 1-9, or, to keep the displayed value, press . T}he appearance of your text can be changed considerably by changing the spacing value as you can see: }.f/s0c1 spacing of zero .f/s2 spacing of two .f/s7 SPACING OF SEVEN .f/s3c0 } Since DAISY-DOT characters are PROPORTIONAL, they consist of character data with NO spacing between t}hem whatsoever. It is entirely up to you to choose the spacing between your characters. You should experiment} to determine which spacing and density combinations look best with the various fonts and your printer. }- Press CTRL/B to toggle auto-bold on and off. When boldface is on, text sent to the printer will be printed }in DOUBLE WIDTH. Boldface is nice for signs and the like. It yields excellent results when used with the TYPE}WRITER and LABELER. - Press CTRL/C to toggle auto-centering on and off. When centering is on, t}ext sent to the printer will be proportionally centered on your page according to the density, spacing, boldface, and} page width you have selected (see WIDTH below). ** PLEASE NOTE: Since FONT, FILE, DENSITY, SPACING, BOLDFA}CE, and CENTERING are always "remembered" by DMG and since they can also be changed by commands within your t}ext file, be sure to check that these values are correct before pressing to begin printing. .U.PAGE D}ATA The PAGE DATA values tell DMG what to expect in the way of text formatting so it can print your page}s properly. These values are not always "remembered" by DMG and, should you choose to leave the FORMAT MENU a}t any time (including changing font or file), they will most often return to the default values shown in figure one. }You set these values just before pressing to print. These values cannot be changed by commands wit}hin your text file. - Press CTRL/L to toggle the lines per page value shown here. There are three avai}lable: 18 lines for 3 X 5 index cards; 66 lines for standard 8 1/2 X 11 paper; and 84 lines for 8 1/2 X 14 legal size}d paper. DMG prints only in the standard six lines per inch mode on your printer and counts these lines to en}sure proper pagination when printing only selected pages of your text file document. Since this value is unim}portant when in the TYPEWRITER or LABELER of DMG, the CTRL/L key is inactive in these modes. .bcu.}DOT-MAGIC!!! page 5 - Press CTRL/W to modify the page width displayed here. This } value should be the actual width in inches of the paper on which you are printing. There are a number of self-exp}lanatory values available. DMG uses this value to determine the center of your page for proportionally center}ing text. It also uses it to determine the absolute maximum length that a line of text can be according to font, } density, spacing etc. Should you attempt to print a line that is too long to fit on the paper according to this v}alue, DMG will truncate (cut off) the excess and it will be "lost." ** NOTE: the WIDTH value of "7" is 7 3/}4 inches in actuality. You may find that with certain fonts and margins, text on standard 8 inch paper will "}center" more attractively using a width value of 7. ӠϠ- DMG is capable of printing ALL pages of your doc}ument, or only the ODD or only the EVEN pages of your document. Press CTRL/P to toggle to your choice. You ca}n use this feature to print on both sides of the page, or create documents in two columns (see HINTS for more} details). Your success here depends entirely upon correctly formatted text files and the proper LENGTH value as note}d above. The CTRL/P key is inactive when in the TYPEWRITER or LABELER. ҠƠ- Press CTRL/N to let} DMG know how many copies you wish to print. The cursor will jump to the window where you can type any number} from 1 to 99 then press . This key is active in all modes so, when you're using the TYPEWRITER, beware that yo}u don't inadvertantly print a line of text more than desired. ** NOTE: When "LINKING" text files, multiple }copy results are unpredictable. (see pg8) - Press CTRL/Q to tell DMG then first and last pages of your} document you wish printed. This feature is similar to the one available with most word processors and the val}ue is entered in the same fashion as with NUMBER OF COPIES above. The CTRL/Q key is inactive in the TYPEWRITE}R and LABELER modes. ** NOTE: Pagination with DMG has nothing to do with the actual page numbers that appe}ar in your formatted text file. The first page accessed from the disk file is considered as page #1 by DMG regardless} of any page number you may have assigned to it with your word processor. *** NOTE: Even when print}ing only selected pages of your document, DMG -- with the exception of include ".pic" -- will execute any and all } commands found within your text file whether they end up going to the printer or not. This is necessary so make }sure that all disk files to be accessed are where your text file claims they are! .bcu.DOT-MAGIC}!!! page 6 .u.MAIN MENU ITEM #1: PRINT A TEXT FILE This is DMG's bread and bu}tter mode which will yield very professional looking results with properly formatted text files. DMG needs te}xt in files that have been "printed to disk" and thus formatted for the printed page. It will work with "saved" w}ord processor files. Properly formatted text files can be created with a number of word processors, some as n}oted below: Ҡ- From ATW+ main menu, press "P" to print; answer "N" to the "PRINT TO PRINT}ER?" prompt; assign your desired filename to the file; choose item C = ATARI 1027 from the printer selection } menu; answer ensueing prompts as desired. (see HINTS) - use the command CTRL + SHIFT "O"; enter you}r desired filename at the output device prompt; answer "N" to the send control code prompt; answer en}sueing prompts as desired. Ҡ- There is no way within LETTER PERFECT itself to print formatt}ed text files to disk in ATARI compatible DOS. One solution is to convert the LJK DOS saved file to an ATARI DOS }file then load and print to disk with ATARIWRITER PLUS. This, unfortunately, may require extensive re}-editing of your file. However, there is now available an excellent utility for printing LETTER PERFECT } files to disk! In fact, this document was prepared with LETTER PERFECT on an 800 model ATARI equipped with an }AUSTIN-FRANKLIN 80 column board (old habits ar hard to break). It was then printed to disk with the }РԠϠŠ. If you've obtained this copy of the doc by sending a donation to C H Q, then you alrea}dy have this utility. If not, it is available from us. Once you've loaded the desired font as described on page tw}o, and entered the name of your text file, make sure all of the desired values appear in the FORMAT MENU (pg3}). Then, place the proper disk into the drive (see HINTS), set your printer to top of form and press to} print your file. The screen is blanked during printing except when displaying certain commands found within your tex}t. You can, at any time, pause printing by pressing the Š or abort printing by pressing the ke}y. **CAUTION: DMG will ignore any characters that are not found in the font samples on page two (ie control }codes, etc.). It will, however, accept characters and print these characters as ě text! Most} word processors will not produce inverse characters when the print to disk feature is implemented. You can, however,} reload the "printed to disk" file into the word processor (if it will fit!) and re-edit (carefully) the text} you wish underlined. ** NOTE: The Wizard's РԠϠŠ for LETTER PERFECT users print }to disk text as !! .bcu.DOT-MAGIC!!! page 7 .u.COMMAND}S WITHIN YOUR TEXT FILE Besides printing absolutely terrific copies of straight text files, DOT-MAGIC!! }can understand and execute a number of commands within a text file as well. Careful attention to the explanation of } these commands and their proper forms will enable you to utilize DOT-MAGIC!! to the fullest extent in just a s}hort time. All types of commands share one thing in common: the very first character, ҠΠ}Π, in an individual line of text received by DMG be a period (.). This initial period alerts } DMG that a command follows. The command itself must follow . A command is then terminated by another per}iod, a space, or a carriage return depending upon its type. With the exception of any filenames appearing in }a command, DMG is insensitive to the case of the command and will execute it whether the letters are upper or } lower case. Should a command not follow its prescribed form given below, DMG will execute it but will instead, p}rint the faulty command as text in your printout thus alerting you to the error. Command forms appear be}low, but please note: the "->" preceding and the "<>" brackets in each are there solely to prevent DMG from e}xecuting the command sample as it prints this documentation or to denote optional parameters respectively. You should} type these characters when typing commands intended for execution. Again, we recommend tha}t you copy this doc file to your printer as straight text through DOS then compare that straight text printou}t to the printout that results from DMG. .u.FONT/FORMAT COMMANDS FONT/FORMAT commands can be used to l}oad a new FONT (pg3), change DENSITY (pg3), change SPACING (pg4), toggle auto-BOLDFACE (pg4), and toggle auto}-CENTERING (pg4). These commands cause changes in the appearance of your printout and take the form: } .c.->.f// + carriage return To initialize this command, the characters ".f/"} be the first characters other than spaces in the line. To load a new font, its device specifier, filena}me, and the extender ".NLQ" appear in upper case letters after the first slash. The optional second slash } (if no font is loaded, only one slash is needed) can be followed by any or all of the self-explanatory letters and }their values: "B" then 1 or 0 for BOLD on or off; "C" then 1 or 0 for CENTER on or off; "S" then 1-9 for SPA}CING; "D" then 1-4 for DENSITY. Mix and match in any order as you please. ** NOTE: Since FONT/FORMAT COMMAN}DS cause the printer to print a blank line in their place, they should replace a carriage return between para}graphs in your text. .bcu.DOT-MAGIC!!! page 8 .u.HEADING COMMANDS } As the name implies, HEADING commands are intended for use with paragraph headings and to offset parts of your} text as desired. Their effects on your text are . They execute for one line only and affect only th}e text that follows them on the same line. They come in three forms for BOLD, CENTER, and UNDERLINE. Here are some sa}mples and the effect they have on your text: ->.u.UNDERLINE THIS TEXT .u.UNDERLINE THIS TEXT } ->.b.PRINT IN BOLDFACE .b.PRINT IN BOLFACE ->.c.CENTER THESE WORDS .c.CENTER THESE WORDS }->.bc.MIX BOLD AND CENTER .bc.MIX BOLD AND CENTER ->.BU.UNDERLINE AND BOLD COMBINED .BU.UNDERLINE AN}D BOLD COMBINED ->.bCu.ALL THREE!! .bCu.ALL THREE! As you can see, the case in which the comman}ds appear makes no difference to DMG. These commands can also be mixed and matched in any order as desired.} ** NOTE: The only way to underline text within the body of your document is to send that text to DMG as } characters .u.LINK FILE COMMAND With this command you can link seperate files together and once } DMG has completed printing the current file, the linked file will then be printed without pause. The link comm}and takes the form: ->.link/Dn:filename.ext + carriage return This command, like FONT/FO}RMAT commands, will cause a blank line to be printed and should replace a carriage return between paragraphs }within your text file. It can, however, replace carriage return between paragraphs within your file (eve}n the first line!). ** NOTE: Combining multiple copies (see pg5) and link commands yields unpredictable res}ults. .bcu.DOT-MAGIC!!! page 9 .u.INCLUDE PICTURE COMMAND }As you have seen, DMG can include within your text graphics 7.5, 8, 9, 10 or hi-res color microscreens saved in strai}ght binary, MICROPAINTER or compressed MICROILLUSTRATOR (ATARIARTIST, KOALA, etc.) disk files. DMG does not n}eed to be told which kind of disk file (uncompressed or compressed) these screens happen to be saved in, it d}ecides for itself! This command takes the form: .c.->.pic/Dn:filename.ext/<1,2,3> + (n) carriage returns} If no optional parameters are present after the filename, DMG will print the picture positive, centered, }in size two. To change this default, follow the filename with a slash then: "L" = blocked left, "C" = centere}d, "R" = blocked right; numeral 1, 2, or 3 = size; "N" = negative. For example, this command: .c.->.pic/D2:M}ENU.PIC/1LN (followed by 16 carriage returns) would cause DMG to print a negative of the picture MENU.PIC from drive} two in size one blocked left. DMG would subsequently ignore the next 16 lines of the text file. ԡ: }to print a picture in size one or size two, the command itself must be followed by 16 carriage returns. For s}ize three, follow the command with 33 carriage returns. These blank lines are necessary since these are the areas of }the paper pictures cover when printed in their respective sizes. This ensures that pagination will be accurat}e when printing the remainder of your document. Make sure these blanks cross a page break!! ** NOTE: } When DMG encounters an INCLUDE PIC command, it will issue one-half line feed before printing the actual picture dat }a then issue one-half line feed after the pic is completed. Some pics may need extra space to look attractive } when inserted within text on the page. It may sometimes be better to have a carriage return precede the comm }and itself, then follow the required blank lines with an extra return as well. Of course, if a caption is to be print }ed under the pic, type it centered with the ->.c. command after the blank lines, ad}d that extra trailing line feed after the caption (as we did with MENU.PIC for figure one on page 3). *** } ̠٠: If your text file includes commands that access disk files for fonts or pictures, DOT-MAGIC}!! find these files exactly where your commands say they will be! The text widow used to display} your text before it is sent to the printer is considered as one long continuous line. Editing keys active ar}e: BACKSPACE, ARROWS, SHIFT/CLEAR, CTRL/A (beginning of line), CTRL/Z (end of line). Simply type your text in } the window, set the format values as explained on pages three through five (the FORMAT MENU active!), then press } to print the line. The TYPEWRITER is an excellent place to experiment with various fonts, }densities, spacing, and widths to get the "feel" of the way DMG works with your printer. Since the FORMAT MENU is act}ive in this mode, it is very simple to change format values and fonts for making comparisons while printing t}he same line of text. .u.MAIN MENU ITEM #4: LABELER The labeler was designed to print on standard 1 X }3 address labels. In all respects, this mode is identical to the TYPEWRITER except for the following: each of} the five lines of the text window represents and individual line of text on the printed address label; CTRL/}B and CTRL/C toggle BOLDFACE and CENTERING respectively for only the line in which the cursor appears. An inverse "B" } and inverse "C" to the left of the window indicate when the respective mode is "on" for that line. WIDTH is !}automatically set to three for this mode and cannot be modified. ATW+ will LOAD type D}of file (pics, programs, etc.) and SAVE that file to another disk just as if you'd copied it through DOS to the disk.E} There are two cautions you should note for doing this: ϠԠԠŠŠΠٛ ١ In fact, don't leaveF} the main menu of ATW+ while copying files this way. Also, you use the ̯ӠŠɢ option from the G} main menu when saving the file. Step by step it would go like this: Boot ATW+. Format a blank disk. TyH}pe and edit your text. Save that text to the new disk. Print that text to the disk (see pg6). Load into ATW+ any ".NLI}Q" font that your text needs to access. Save with CTRL/S the fonts to the new disk. Load into ATW+ any pic fiJ}le that your text needs to access. Save with CTRL/S the pics to the new disk. Load and print to the disk any linked K} files that your text needs to access. There! Now all of your files are on one disk to be easily accessed by DML}G when printing! .U.WITH MORE THAN ADDRESSES The LABELER of DMG (pg10) will make excellent VIDEO CASSEM}TTE LABELS!. Just trim them a bit so they fit. Here is a sample: .bc.CROCODILE DUNDEE .c.1986 / 98 mN}inutes .c.PG-13 / HI-FI stereo .u.WITH THE 130XE RAMDISK If you have an AUTORUN.SYS file that O}initializes the RAMDISK and perhaps can automatically copy files to it, copy that file to your backup of DMG.P} Then append the DMG AUTORUN.SYS to that RAMDISK file on the backup disk. You can use this to auto-load upon booting Q}the ".NLQ" fonts to the RAMDISK for quick access. Another method is to boot with your favorite DOS disk aR}nd hand copy any files to the RAMDISK. Then insert the DMG disk and, using menu item "L", LOAD and run the AUS}TORUN.SYS file on the DMG disk. .u.WITH LONG FILES If you find it necessary to split a single documentT} into two or more seperate files because it "grew" too large to fit the editor of your word processor, you caU}n retro-fit them back together once you've got them printed to disk for DMG (pg6). All you need do is append the V} second file to the first (etc.) through DOS menu item "C". The pagination formatting should remain intact but youW} must be careful to keep the page numbers correct. Most word processors offer the option to start page numberX}ing with any number, which is also useful with DMG's LINK file command option (pg8). .bcu.MORE HINTY}S FOR USING DMG .u.WITH A SHORTAGE OF PAPER You can use the PAGES TO PRINT option of DMG (pg5) to reduZ}ce the space needed to store your hard copies of documentation files. Set your printer to TOF and print only [}the ODD numbered pages of a file first. Remove the paper from the printer then re-insert it so that TOF is at\} the top of the BACKSIDE of page one that you've just printed. Print then only the EVEN pages of the file! This is he]}lpful with doc files because you will have, when the resulting book is laid open, fully TWO pages of informat^}ion before your gaze (no more need to leaf back and forth as with doc printed on only one side)! You should use _} at least 20lb bond paper for this feature. .u.WITH NEWSLETTERS The PAGES TO PRINT feature (pg5) can`} enable you to print text in two columns on the page. This is tricky, so pay attention. Since normal DMG fonta}s are proportional, two column text or justified text printed to disk with the word processor will get all screwed upb} when printed with DMG (try it). There is a solution: on the expanded doc disk you will find .NLQ fonts that c}have the first character of their name replaced by a "J" (ie ROMAN.NLQ = JOMAN.NLQ). Use these fonts for JUSTd}IFED text, TWO COLUMN text or for tables (like we did for the table of contents). These fonts have had their charactee}r data padded with blanks and are designed for use with a SPACING of ϛ (IMPORTANT!!). Some look good, othef}rs don't.
