RAMbrandt GALLERY by Bard Ermentrout __________________ This program p}was wholly created using ValFORTH products of Valpar International, Tucson, AZ, 85713 based on fig FORTH, provided thq}rough the courtesy of the Forth Interest Group, P.O. Box 1105, San Carlos CA. It is in the public domain and may be dr}istributed free of charge to all ATARI users. RAMbrandt Gallery is a program for the automated display of RAMbrands}t pictures in modes 1, 2, 3, and 4 (but not mode 0 [GR. 7]) stored in the normal RAMbrandt format (10 pictures per diskt}). It will not work with any other picture formats. To use pictures from other formats you can use the RAMbrandt DOu}S module to convert them to RAMbrandt format pictures. To use mode 0 pictures, load them up in mode 4 with RAMbrandtv} (they will only cover half the screen) and then use the scale command to double their size. Resave them as mode 4 pw}ictures. There are two parts to the Gallery program, the actual projector and the slideshow editor. RAMbrandt "x}SLIDE PROJECTOR" --------------------------- Think of the program as a slide projector which has room for 10 pictuy}res. These can be displayed in any order with a variety of wipes and dissolves between pictures. You can mix differentz} graphics modes and either control the projector manually or automatically. It can use the extra memory of the 130XE{} to store 8 pictures so that the disk drive is only used occasionally. It also can store up to 10 pictures in an Ata|}ri 800 with the MOSAIC Select RAMdisk boards. This is all done automatically. GETTING STARTED ---}}------------ Copy this disk using a sector copier (available in the Public Domain from user groups or Public Domain ~}copy services such as BELLCOM, Box 1043, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7A5). Store the original disk in a safe pla}ce and use the copy. DO NOT PUT ANY MORE PICTURES ON THIS DISK! Take out all cartridges and insert side 2 of this di}sk into your drive. On XL/XE machines, hold down the OPTION key to disable BASIC. Turn on the computer and after a }few seconds the first menu appears. This asks you whether you have 1 or 2 drives. Insert a picture disk. If you hav}e 1 drive insert the picture disk into drive 1 otherwise put it into drive 2. (Note: several demo pictures are included} on this disk for your use...simply leave it in your drive unit). Press START. In 1 drive systems, you will hear a }beep. This means you should insert the disk into drive 1. After insertion, press RETURN. The program will run. If} you are using a copy of the original disk (this disk), it will go directly to the slide show. Press and the p}rogram will go to the Editor after the current disk load is complete. If you used a picture disk which has not been }initialized for the slide show, the program will go directly to the Editor. NOTE: This program attempts to trap dis}k errors such as leaving the write protect label on when saving parameters or leaving the door of the drive open or hav}ing no disk in the drive, etc. When such an error occurs, the program will buzz and wait for you to fix the problem.} Once this is done, press RETURN to continue. EDITOR ------ The EDITOR screen shows a} directory of your picture disk and the current active drive. It will display a warning message that the disk is not }setup for the slideshow. That is OK, you will now set it up. Press RETURN and you will see the command list at the }bottom of the screen. There are 7 commands. The most important is SETMODES. This tells the slideshow program which } mode each of your pictures is. You only do this once. To choose a command, press the number corresponding to it. }0. SETMODE. To get this press 0. You will be asked for the mode (0-4) of each of your pictures. Anything which is la}beled mode 0 will be skipped by the slideshow. Thus if you have blanks on your picture disk, set the mode to 0. Whe}n asked for the mode #, press the mode number or if the mode displayed is correct, press return. This will be done for} all 10 pictures and you will be returned to the main command menu. 1. SAVE TO DISK. Use this command to write t}he slideshow parameters to your picture disk. If you do this, the slideshow will start up immediately without taking} you to the editor. This will not hurt your picture disk. 2. LOAD NEW DISK. This lets you change parameters on all o}f your picture disks at once without having to go to the editor. When you do this, the new directory will be display}ed. 3. CHANGE PARAMETERS. This is the command you will use the most often since it lets you customize your slidesho}w. Press 3 and a new menu appears. The slide projector has 10 slots #0, #1, ... #9 which are shown across the top li}ne. Along the left column are the highlighted letters P, W, T, S. These are the parameters you can change. You wi}ll notice that 0 is also highlighted. This is the first slide. Press N a few times and note how the highlighted numbe}r changes. Each of these is a slot in your projector. Press N to get back to slide 0. You can choose which of your} 10 pictures are to be shown for this slide. To do this press P for picture and follow with a picture number from 0-}9. The number will appear beneath the slot #. Initially, the program default is slide 0 is picture 0, slide 1 is pic}ture 1, etc. If you want to change the order, just use the P command to assign a new picture to the slot. The W com}mand, obtained by pressing W allows you to change the wipe for a given picture. A wipe is a way to go from one pict}ure to the next. For example the ANTIC program FADER is a bit by bit dissolve from one picture to the next. Below the} directory on the screen are the 10 different wipes in this program. They include horizontal, vertical, and diagonal} wipes. A strange dissolve, fader, and many other ones which you should explore yourself. My favorite is SPIN. To }use a wipe for a given slide, press W and follow with the number 0-9 corresponding to the desired wipe. The T comman}d lets you designate how much time to wait between pictures. This is in seconds and ranges from 0-99. Press T and t}hen put the number of seconds. Press RETURN. The S command defines the slowness of the wipe. The larger number you }choose, the longer the wipe takes. Press S and then follow with a number from 0-99. Press RETURN. Once you have ch}anged the first slide, 0, go to the next by pressing N. To get back to the main menu, press . Once you have} set the parameters and they look good, you can save them to disk with the SAVE PARAMETERS command. Then when you l}oad this disk, the pictures will be shown exactly as you have specified. 4. MANUAL/AUTO. This command allows you to} manually control the display of pictures. Each time you press "4" the bottom of the screen will indicate the mode. } This is not saved to your picture disk. When in AUTO, the slides will be projected with a certain amount of time betw}een them. the time is the value that you have set with the change parameters command. In MANUAL mode, the slide will} be displayed until you press the button of joystick 1 or hit the space bar. Then the next slide will be shown. 5}. RANDOM. This lets you show the pictures on the disk in random order and/or with random wipes between them. This p}arameter is not saved. Press "5" and follow the instructions. 6. DISPLAY. This is an unfortunate addition to the p}rogram which was found to be necessary due to some hardware complications. When you have a screen with many display li}st interrupts, the timing to the serial port of the disk drive is messed up and you get checksum errors. This result}s in alot of buzzing by the program and requires you to keep RETURN pressed down all the time. The cure for this pro}blem is to turn the DISPLAY LIST INTERRUPTS off when loading the disk. This is the default option and this is saved }to your picture disk. Press "6" and the DISPLAY will be set to ON or OFF. If your pictures have many interrupts, I }recommend "OFF". This is of course no problem if you are using a RAM Disk. Now that you have set your parameters an}d saved them to the picture disk, you can show the pictures. Press ESC to exit from the EDITOR mode. THE }SHOW BEGINS --------------- Your disk of pictures will be loaded and shown repeatedly until you stop it or t}urn off the machine. You can also change disks in the middle of the show without going back to the editor. } CHANGING DISKS -------------- TWO DRIVES: If you have 2 drives, insert the new disk into the drive that} is not active. Press N. The parameters will be automatically loaded and the new pictures will be shown. ONE DRIVE:} If you have only one drive, press N. The program will buzz. Remove the old disk and insert the new. Press RETURN an}d the show will start up again with the new pictures. CHANGING PARAMETERS ------------------- You} can get back to the editor by pressing ESC. You can then adjust the times and the wipes, etc, and run again. If you} decide you like them, save the parameters to the disk. HINTS ----- 1. If you have a} 130XE and your picture disk has 10 pictures, set two of your pictures to mode 0 and then the program will just load }the other 8 and never have to use the disk. 2. Use the NULL wipe to change between pictures in different graphic mo}des. It just blanks the screen puts up the new picture, and then displays it. You don't have to do this, but, I thi}nk it looks better. 3. Play around with the speeds of the wipes and look at each one carefully. ********}***** Special Bonus ************* You asked for it, and here it is! On the documentation side of }this disk is a program called PATCH.BAS. This will patch your copy of RAMBRANDT so that it will support the stylus b}utton on the ATARI Touch Tablet. In order to use this patch, you must install it in your copy of RAMBRANDT. You shou}ld do this on a back-up copy of RAMBRANDT, not on your original. To make a back-up, you will need a Sector Copier. Th}ese are generally available in the public domain from user groups (such as BELLCOM). Antic also has one available as} part of Sherlock 1050 (AP0155). Boot up a DOS 2.0 or 2.5 disk with BASIC.
