LCan't find D8:DVC.OBJ B VDEBJ V}911ϩDE BI Vdl IHEDB V0DE8HI} V B VL0 OASIS BBS SOFTWARE (c) 1986 All rights reserved. This section of the documentation describes how to set up a}nd customize yourBBS. You should also read the other .DOC files to learn how to use your BBS toits fullest. } SETTING UPThis BBS program was written entirely in assembly language by Rich Renner andRalph Walden.} Months of testing have been done on both the HELP BBS and theACE BBS to eliminate as many bugs as possible. By carefully }reading thedocumentation and following the set up procedures described, you should have acrash free BBS.You must run your} computer without BASIC. If you are running an 800 you willneed to remove your BASIC cartridge; XL/XE owners hold down OPTI}ON to lock outBASIC.First make a backup of the OASIS disk. The main OASIS program disk is setup sothat you can boot it a}nd have the BBS run. You may find it helpful to refer tothis version as you customize the BBS to your system and your own p}references. You need to create a boot disk that you will use whenever you boot the BBS.Format a disk and write DOS to it. }It is highly recommended that you useSparta DOS. Other DOS systems will work, but they will not be able to expandfiles as }needed. With Sparta DOS, message bases and your password file willexpand as they are used, so you can start with each file }being small. Youronly size limits will be the amount of disk space you have. With any other DOSsystem, you must decide ah}ead of time how large you want each message base tobe, and how large your password file will be. Also, if you are using 105 }0drives, then the purchase of an ICD doubler for each drive will not only giveyou more storage, but with Sparta DOS, it wil }l triple your drive's speed.Once you have your boot disk formatted and DOS written to the disk, copy anRS232 handler to th }e disk. Next, copy the files OASIS.COM, SETUP.RES, andDVC.OBJ from the OASIS program disk to your boot disk. These are the } onlyfiles that are required to be on D1:. You now need to decide on which drivesyou will keep your other files, and copy }files from the OASIS program diskaccordingly. The following files must be copied. Which drive they will be onis up to you}.There is an important difference between .RES files and .SUP files. .RES filesare loaded into memory while the BBS is bo}oting. The BBS then sends thesefiles from memory as needed. .SUP files reside on a disk and must first beloaded into memo}ry before being sent to the user. If you have a RAM disk, there will be very little difference in speed between .RES files a}nd .SUPfiles. You will probably NOT want all your files as .RES files. The passworddata and your .RES files must share th}e same memory. The larger your .RESfiles, the less room for passwords. If the total number of passwords in useand availab}le passwords drops below 200, you may not be able to boot the BBS(the BBS must use part of this memory while it is booting).} Each passwordrequires 7 bytes of memory, so if you converted a 700 byte .RES file to a .SUPfile, you would have room for }100 more passwords. *.RES files It's a good idea to put all the .res files on your boot disk, as these are only us}ed while the BBS is booting. Once the BBS is running, you can remove the disk and replace it with another disk with diffe}rent files on it. MESS.DAT This contains all the prompts your users will receive. The BBS reads this in durin}g the boot process and stores it internally. It's probably best to put this on your boot disk as it won't be used once th}e BBS is running. *.SUP - these files are used while the BBS is actually running. You may want to put these on a }separate disk that you will put in D1: once you remove your boot disk. MV*.SUP - these are your movies, the logoff} screens, and various .RES files that you wanted as .SUP files. IMPORTANT - if you want MVA.SUP and MVB.SUP se}nt as the user logs off, they MUST be present while the BBS is booting. CONFIG.DAT - this file is used whenever a }user logs off - it keeps track of all the callers, highest message number, etc. This would be a good candidate} for a RAM disk. PASS.DAT - this file contains all your passwords. MESSAGE.* - these are your message bases. Each me}ssage base can be on any drive you select. Message bases have the extension .DAA, .DBB, .DCC, etc. The highes }t message base will be used for E-mail. As this will get the most use, it would be a good candidate to place on a RAM!} disk. You are now ready to customize your BBS. There are two files you must changebefore you can really run your BBS. T"}he first is the CONFIG.DAT file. Tochange this, put in your OASIS program disk, and load the file CNFGEDIT.COM.This program#} will allow you to set how many message bases you will be using, give names to each message base, set the guest user defaults$}, and edit thebackground and character color the BBS will use. You can also use it to expandexisting files, or create blan%}k files such as a new message base. If you arenot using Sparta DOS, you will need to use the option to write a blank fi&}lefor each message base you will be using. Your first message base is calledMESSAGE.DAA, the second is MESSAGE.DAB, etc. '} will create a file of 120bytes. You will then need to use the option to expand the files to themaximum size you th(}ink you will need. Once you have expanded your messagebases, you should also expand your PASS.DAT file. Each password will)} take up64 bytes - so take the number of passwords you expect to have and multiply itby 64, and expand the file by that man*}y bytes. Remember, you only need to dothis if you will NOT being using Sparta DOS. If you use Sparta DOS, the BBSwill cre+}ate any missing files while it is booting. It will also automaticallyexpand the files as needed. In other words, if you do,}n't have Sparta DOS, youshould get it! CAUTION: when entering or renaming a message base using CNFGEDIT, DO NOTEXCEED -}15 characters or all sorts of terrible things will happen with yourmessage bases. Now select the option to set the gues.}t options. These are the commandsthat a guest may use. When you press , you will see a list of the currentsettings. The/} first 3 lines are the possible commands a user may use. If theletter is in inverse, the command is enabled. If it is a no0}rmal character, then the user will get the message "Access denied" when they select thatcommand. If you would like to change1} a command, press . You will be given achoice of 6 numbers corresponding to the 6 lines of options. If you select<1>, 2}you will see something like this:ABCDEFGH11111111A 1 below the letter means the letter is enabled. A 0 means the option3} isturned off. The cursor will be placed over the first number. If you don'twant to change anything, just press RETU4}RN. Otherwise, move the cursor underthe letter you want to change and enter a 1 to turn the option on, or a 0 toturn the o5}ption off. Then press RETURN to see the new options. The letter Ais a special case. If this option is off, then a user ca6}nnot view any movies. All other commands will correspond to your menu. Until you become familiarwith the BBS, it's a good i7}dea to leave all options on for now. BE SURE YOULEAVE THE LOG OFF COMMAND (G) ENABLED!The 4th line contains a number for 8}each message base. If the number is ininverse, then the user can use that message base. This will affect whatmessage base9} names the user will be given when they press the command. Auser can NOT change to the E-mail base even if the number i:}s turned on. Toturn off a base, change it the same way you would change one of the commandline options. The 5th line is t;}he users level. This should be a number between 0-9. Alldownload files on your BBS will end with a level number. The user<} can onlydownload the files whose level is the same or less then the users level. Forexample, if the users level is set to =}2, then she/he will not be able todownload a file that ends with level 3 or greater. The 6th line is how long you will allo>}w a guest to stay online per call. Thistime is in minutes.Once you have edited the guest options, press for no change?}s. At the topof the menu will be the message "Guest function on". This determines whetheryou will default to allowing gue@}sts on your BBS. You can change this with the option. You will also be able to change this from the BBS - this just setA}sthe default for when the BBS boots up.You can also set the colors the BBS will use. The default is to use a blackbackgrB}ound, and a character brightness of 10. Press is you wish to changethese. You should leave the brightness at about 10.C} While the BBS is waitingfor a call, the screen will be dimmed. It will brighten up once the BBS has acaller.Once you hD}ave made all the changes you want, press and the program willwrite out the CONFIG.DAT file. Now you are ready to edit E}the SETUP.RES file. This is the master file the BBSuses when it boots to determine where files are, which files you are usiF}ng, andmany of the options that you may choose from. First, load up a word processorand load the file SETUP.RES. It is veG}ry important as you work with this filethat you DO NOT GET ANY LINES OUT OF ORDER! You must NOT delete any lines, except thH}ose lines that begin with a ';'. A ';' is considered a comment, andthe rest of the line is ignored. Here are the options, I}line by line. Y/N - This tells the BBS if you are using Sparta DOS 3 and an R8 clock. If Y, then the BBS will getJ} the time from the R8 cartridge. If not, you will be asked to set the time and date. Do NOT say yes if you are not K} using Sparta DOS 3 or your computer will crash! Y/N - use FUNCT.SUP & AFUNCT.SUP? If this is Y then the BBS will lL}ook for FUNCT.SUP and AFUNCT.SUP instead of using FUNCT.RES and AFUNCT.RES. The difference is that .RES files M}are read into memory during the boot process and sent to the user instantaneously. The .SUP file must first beN} read in from a disk. If you have a RAM disk, you may want to use .SUP files in order to gain more room for passwordsO}, otherwise stick to .RES files. FUNCT is your 40 column ASCII menu, and AFUNCT is your 40 column ATASCII (AtarP}i) menu. Y/N - use AFUNCT.RES? If the above line is Y, this line will be ignored, but MUST still be here. ThQ}is determines if you want a separate menu for ATASCII callers. Your ATASCII menu may contain graphics characters whichR} can only be seen by 8 bit Atari users. Y/N/F - use SFUNCT.SUP instead of SFUNCT.RES? This will be your 80 columnS} menu if you decide to have one. You can have it stored internally as a .RES file, or if this line is , it T}will be read in from disk whenever the user request to see the main menu. If you enter then the BBS will uU}se FELCASICI.UP as a welcome screen for Flash users, and FFUNCT.SUP as a menu for Flash users. (Flash users would entV}er a when asked to press return during the log-on or when changing translation. Y/N - use PASSAP.SUW}P instead of PASSAP.RES? This file is sent to a user if they decide to apply for a password. Y/N - use WELCASCI.SX}UP instead of WELASCI.RES? This is your welcome screen for non 8 bit atari users (ASCII mode). Y/N - use WELCATA.Y}SUP instead of WELCATA.RES? This is your welcome screen for 8 bit Ataris. .RES files are loaded into memory whZ}en the BBS boots up, are kept in memory at all times. .SUP files are read in only as needed, and not kept in memory. [}The more .RES files you have, and the larger they are, the less room for passwords you will have. If you are starting to \}hurt for password space, then you can change some of the .RES files to .SUP files. Y/N - use MVM.SUP & MVV.SUP instead ]}of VBASE.RES & VBASEM.RES. Making these .SUP files means you can change the Vbase section without taking the BBS ^} down. Y/N - use MVD.SUP instead of DBASEM.RES. Y/N - use MVE.SUP instead of DBASE.RES. *WARNING* if say yes to th_}is, you can ONLY use the command to display text files. You MUST use the DBASE.RES if you want to have pro`}tocol downloads from the base. Y/N - use MVF.SUP instead of FDIRECM.RES Y/N - use MVI.SUP instead of IDIRECM.RESa} Y/N - use MVP.SUP instead of PBASEM.RES 1/2/3/4 - Determines how the

command is used. 1 means send the user PHb}ONE.SUP. 2-4 will use PBASEM (or MVP.SUP) and PBASE.RES. 2- send text files (like command). 3-send specific file wic}th protocol. 4- Use categories and download by number (like command). 1/2/3/4 - Determines how the command is d}used. 1 means send the user DNLD.SUP. 2-4 will use DBASEM (or MVD.SUP) and DBASE.RES. 2- send text files (like ce}ommand). 3-send specific file with protocol. 4- Use categories and download by number (like command). Y/N - use tf}he command to access the IDIREC download section? If this is , then the user will be sent the file: INFO.SUP. g} (see information about download areas on the BBS) Y/N - use a separate menu for 80 column users (SFUNCT)? Y/Nq}BOASIS COMBPASSAP RESBPBASE RESBPBASEM RESBPRNTPASSCOMBSETUP DOCBSETUP RESB SFUNCT RESBTEXTPRO CNFB USER COMBVBASE RESBVBASEM RESB WELCASCIRESB WELCATA RESB% DOS SYSB2AUTORUN SYSB3MENU BASBvHOASISDMOOBJ - use a separate 80 column bulletin (SBULLET.SUP)? Y/N - send the file GUEST.SUP to all system guests? name - thr}is is the name of the subdirectory to use for uploads (you MUST be using Sparta DOS to use this). If you do NOT want s}uploads to go to a subdirectory, place a '0' here.;The following lists the name of all the .RES files. The name must}t be there, even if the file is not to be read in. For example, if you are going to usethe command for the user to readu} INFO.SUP, then the files IDIREC.RES andIDIRECM.RES will not be read in. Their names must still be here in theSETUP.RES fiv}le! A number greater then 99 will turn off this feature. When a user logs off, the } BBS checks each message base except E-mail to see if the number of messages is greater then this number. If so, t}he first 5 unlocked messages within the first 64 messages will be deleted and the base will be compacted. Now }you are ready to customize your menus and download areas. Examples of eachof the files are provided on your disks. Take a }look at these and change themas you desire. You should look at and/or change the following files: WELCATA.RES - this fi}le is the welcome message sent to your ATASCII callers. You can use all the control characters you want in this file.} WELCASCI.RES - this file is the welcome message sent to your ASCII callers. DO NOT use any control characters in t}his file. It will be seen by all other type computers on your system. AFUNCT.RES - if you enable the option in SET}UP.RES, this menu will be sent to all your ATASCII callers. You can use control characters in this file. } FUNCT.RES - this is the menu for your 40 column users. This menu will be seen by non-Atari users, so you should not} put control characters in it. SFUNCT.RES - this is the menu for 80 column users. Do not use any control c}haracters. FDIRECM.RES - this menu is selected with the option and displays the download categories available }from the F function on your menu. FDIREC.RES - this is the support file for FDIRECM.RES. The first line contains }all of the letters and numbers corresponding to the download categories you have. Following this is a list of th}e drive and subdirectory to search for. Take a look at the examples on the disk to get a better idea of ho}w to use this. IDIRECM.RES - if the option is enabled in SETUP.RES, then this will be used as a second download ar}ea accessed as . The format is identical to the download area. IDIREC.RES - this is the support file for I}DIRECM.RES. EXT.RES - this file determines how the BBS will interpret the first two letters of the extension on yo}ur download file names. Typically the first letter would be used to state the language, and the second to s}tate the type of file. In EXT.RES the first line lists all the possible extensions you will accept for the firs}t extension letter. The next line is for all the possible extensions for the second letter of the extension. }If a file name has an extension not in this list, the BBS will use the meaning of the last command you list. Fo}llowing this is a list of the meanings of each command. Take a close look at the EXT.RES provided on the dis}k before you start changing this file. VBASEM.RES & VBASE.RES - this is your text file section. VBASEM is the }menu displayed to the users, VBASE is the list of the specific text files. PBASEM.RES & PBASE.RES - how these are }used depends on how you specify it in the SETUP.RES file. DBASEM.RES & DBASE.RES - how these are used depends on h}ow you specify it in the SETUP.RES file. PASSAP.RES - This is your password application information which will be} sent to a user when they request a password. Since this file isn't sent very often, it's a good candidate to c}hange to a support file. The option is in your SETUP.RES file. You are now ready to edit your support files. With t}he exception of theMV?.SUP files, these files must all be on the .SUP drive you specify inSETUP.RES. The MV?.SUP files are} on you "movie" drive, also specified inSETUP.RES. BULLET.SUP - this file is sent to all guests as part of the log on } procedure, and once to all password holders (if auto bulletin is enabled in SETUP.RES, otherwise, the user must t}urn it off with the Xpert options). DNLD.SUP - this file is only sent if you select #1 for the DBASE option in } your SETUP.RES file. GUEST.SUP - if the option is turned on in SETUP.RES, then this file is sent to all guests} when they log on. HELP.SUP - this file explains all the commands on the BBS and how to use them. You will probab}ly find the HELP.SUP file included on the disk to be sufficient, but you should look through it to be sure it is wh}at you want. INFO.SUP - this file can be sent with either the

or command. It is sent with the }command if you select that option in SETUP.RES. It is sent with the

command if you selected #0 in SETUP.RES for t}he PBASE section. PHONE.SUP - this is sent with the command, and typically would contain a list of} other BBS numbers, but you can change it to contain any kind of information you want. SBULLET.SUP - this is the s}ame as the BULLET.SUP only it is sent to all 80 column users. Use this if you want to send a special message to your }ST users. UPLOAD.SUP - just before the BBS asks for the name of the file the user is going to upload, this }file is sent to them. You can use it to tell them whatever information you want, or just create the file with a singl}e RETURN if you want it ignored. MVA.SUP - if this file is present on you movie drive when the BBS is booting } up, then it will be sent when an Atascii (8 bit Atari) caller logs off. MVB.SUP - if this file is present on your mov}ie drive when the BBS is booting up, then it will be sent when an ASCII caller logs off.If you wish to have online m}ovies on your BBS, they will need to be namedMV?.SUP. You can select the drive on which the movies will be stored in theSET}UP.RES file. The ? would be a number from 0 thru 9. The movies will be sentto all callers who are in ATASCII mode with 40 c}olumns set as their parameters. They are accessed by typing a number key 0 thru 9. The last file to edit is the MESS.DA}T file which contains all the promptsthat are sent to the user. Use the BBS a while before you edit this file soyou get an} idea of how the prompts are currently set up. Like the SETUP.RESfile, it is crucial that the lines remain in order, and yo}u do not delete anylines. The first line contains a list of the letters for each command. If youwould like to use a differ}ent letter for a command, you can change it in thisline. For example, if you want to be the screen width instead of }, thenyou would simply change the 'T' in this line to a 'W'. The position doesn'tchange, only the letter. For example, th}e second character is the command toread the system bulletin. You can use any character there you want to executethat comm}and. Remember if you change the options, you will need to change whatis enabled/disabled in the config.dat file for guests,} and the SETUP.RES filefor new password holders. Within the MESS.DAT file are 5 prompts labeled Control 4-8. These are}sent when you press control 4-8. You would normally use these when chatting toa user and you have a predefined message to }tell them. If the last characterin the line is a control Z, then the BBS will drop out of chat mode. This wayyou could se}nd a parting message and drop out of chat mode all in onekeystroke. You can force a return in the middle of a line of t}ext in this file byusing a control comma.
