Basically, Pryzm works by flippingbetween a color screen and aluminance screen very quickly, sothat the end effv}ect is 16 colorswith 16 luminances, for 256 colors. For best results, whenever you usePryzm, turn the color up highenoughw} so the colors are extremelybright. Pressingany)t} key will get out of the helpscreen, and pressing ? will displayit again. Notice that to savespace, commands of similar t)u}ypehave been grouped together. Commands in inverse correspond tothe function description also ininverse. At the drawing )v}screen, you will seea blue cursor, and an informationbar at the right side of thescreen. You can use the joystickto cont)w}rol the cursor, or use thecursor keys (without pressingControl). The information bar willdisplay your current X and Ycoo)x}rdinates, as well as the colornumber you are currently using. Pressing SELECT and OPTION willmove the information bar left)y} andright, respectively. (The bar canbe moved out of sight to the left.)COMMANDS--------Box: When you push B or F,)z} thecursor will turn green, pointing tothe upper left corner of your box. Using the joystick or the cursorkeys, you can d){}rag out the lowerright corner. When you aresatisfied, press the trigger, orpush Return, and the box or squarewill be dra)|}wn in the current color. The Box command draws a rectangle, but the Filled command will alsofill it in.Color Change: When)}} you push C, apalette will appear wherever yourcursor is, and another cursor willshow you what color you arecurrently usi)~}ng. With the joystickor cursor keys (remember, withoutpressing Control), you can changethe current color. Moving up and)}down will change the hue; movingleft and right will change theluminance. Note how theinformation bar changes accordingto)} the color. When you aresatisfied, press C, Return, or thetrigger. (If you use the triggerto exit, be careful not to hol)}d ittoo long, or you will draw onto thescreen as well.)Directory: Press D, and the screenwill clear. Type in the compl)}etedirectory path, and press Return. When you are satisfied, press anykey to resume drawing. You may useControl-1 to pau)}se the listing.Toggle Edit Mode: In PA, there arethree different edit modes. Firstis Normal Mode, which simply meansth)}at whenever you draw onto the'canvas', you replace theunderlying color. Second is theHue-Edit-Only mode. This meansthat)} when you draw, only the hue ofthe pixel is changed, the luminancestays the same. Finally, inLuminance-Edit-Only mode, on)}ly theluminance is altered, not the hue. When using the Color ChangeCommand, you still have full accessto all 256 colors)}, but only the hueor luminance will be used. This isespecially useful for adding colorto Graphics 9 screens, which areus)}ually greyscale. The color ofthe cursor will reflect the modeyou are in. Normal editing yieldsa blue cursor, Hue-Only gi)}ves a redcursor, and Luminance-Only shows awhite cursor.Pixel Average: Pressing H willdirect PA to perform a pixelaver)}age horizontally. Pressing Vwill perform vertical averaging. The effect isn't very breathtaking, but it can smoothen your )}pictureslightly. When invoked, a secondcursor will zip across the screen, showing you approximately where itis working on)}. If you have to stopit, simply press any key, and theaveraging will discontinue at theend of a row or column. Thesefun)}ctions can be used in conjuctionto the Edit only modes--you canaverage only the luminance or thehue.Load/Save: When you)} press L or Sfor these commands, the screen willclear, and you will be prompted forthe full filename of the file to beloa)}ded/saved. Remember to includethe device, and any necessarypathnames. (In this preliminaryversion, Save is not supported)}.)Paint Fill: To fill with thecurrent color, position the cursorto the starting point of fill, andpress P. If the poin)}t is alreadycolored with the current color, itwill not continue. I designed thiscommand to imitate the pouring of aliqui)}d, filling upwards. Sometimes, it may take one or twofills to fully fill the area. Again, this command can be usedwith th)}e edit modes. During thefill, the cursor will blinkperiodically; when it is done, thecursor will return to its naturalco)}lor. If you need to break out ofthe fill, simply press any key.Rays/Extending: Rays is used todraw lines, by connecting)} twopoints. When you press R, anothercursor will appear, pull it to theendpoint of your line. Press thetrigger to draw )}it, or use R orReturn. Remember that you can usethe cursor keys too, and that theedit modes still apply. The Xcommand i)}s similar, but when youperform it, all lines drawn will befrom a fixed center. Position yourcursor to the fixed point of )}yourchoice, then press X. Now, extendthe endpoint cursor, and draw asmany rays as you want. When youare done, press X o)}r Return.Trigger Latch: When you press T,you toggle the trigger latchfunction. This makes the triggerseem as if it was)} held downcontinually. To use this, press T,then position your cursor, andpress the trigger. Now, thetrigger is latched)}, and you nolonger need to hold it down. Whenyou are done, press T again to turnit off. This is especially usefulwith t)}he Extending rays function,or just for drawing with greaterprecision. (Note: Do not use thiswith Color Change, instead, )}disableit first. Or better yet, use thecolor cycle keys.)Quit: Pressing Control-Q willinstantly perform a Warmstart, a)}ndexit to Dos. If location 580contains a one, then the computerwill perform a Coldstart, so becareful.Load/Save Gr.9/1)}1: These functionswill load and save, Graphics 9 and11 screens. Simply type in thefull filename as before. When youloa)}d a Gr.9 or Gr.11 screen, theother screen will still be present;i.e., if you load in a Gr.9 screen, its Gr.11 complement fr)}om the oldscreen will still be present. Bewarned, that with the savefunctions, (of this and normal .PZMpictures), if you)} run out of spaceon the disk, PA will not be able todetect it. It is wise that youcheck the directory before yousave. ()}These four commands are notimplemented in this preliminaryversion. Pressing these keys willyield a buzz, as will S for th)}eSave command.)Cycle colors: Sometimes, it is tootroublesome to use the Color ChangeCommand, so you can use these keys)}to cycle through the luminances, orhues. Notice that these keys aresimply the cursor keys performedwith Shift.Lighten/D)}arken: You may noticethat Gr.9 screens sometimes appearlighter, so you can use these twofunctions to darken or lighten th)}eluminance. It will not affect thehue, no matter what edit mode youare in. When you darken, allcolors that already have)} luminanceof 0, stay that way--all othercolors decrease one. The sameapplies for lightening, towardscolors with luminanc)}e 15.Clear: This function is invoked bypressing Shift-<. This commandclears, again, depending on theedit mode you are )}in. For example, you may only clear out theluminances, or hues.CLOSING-------You may have noticed that PA isdesigne)}d to help you add color toyour Graphics 9 pictures. I admitthat not all pictures will workwell with color, but some can t)}urnout well.
