There are 18 articles and 8 ^}programs packed onto this disk! I hope you find them interesting and enjoyable. I'm sorry for the delay in the release ^}of Futura 6 - it would have been out on the 1st March if I hadn't experienced a string of hardware failures (not to mention a^}n onslaught of university essays)! Why is it that everything always happens at the same time? You will read within this^} issue that I have decided to take Futura out of the public domain from Futura 7 onwards. A full explanation is given within^} the Futura.DOC file on Side A. I have placed a number of the articles on Side B. To read these, simply load ViewDocs f^}rom Side A, flip the disk, and enter the filename at the prompt. There are three excellent programs on Side A. Colour H^}elper V4.0 is a type of utility I have wanted to see for a long time. It gives the Setcolor and Poke figures for on-screen c^}olours. No more experimenting with various Pokes! Spider (Demo Version) is a great game written by the Aktiesend Atari ^}User Club in Germany. You must collect all the keys to open the door to the insect repellent spray and the next level. Watc^}h out for all the spiders! There are only seven levels in this demo version but I can guarantee you that they'll keep you bu^}sy for some time. I'm still battling my way through level 5! The top ten highscores are saved to disk. Capture The Fla^}g is, in my opinion, the best two-player game ever written for the Atari 8-Bit! The graphics and sound aren't anything speci^}al but the gameplay is unbeatable! Both players begin the game at the top corners of the maze. They must race down to the b^}ottom to collect the flag. You have a limited amount of ammo which allows you to shoot a wall (or your opponent). When you ^}capture the flag you must race back up to your starting square. However, when one player has the flag, the other has unlimit^ }ed ammo! If you are shot by your opponent whilst holding the flag you loose it and begin at your starting sqaure. You will ^!}then have unlimited ammo to re-capture the flag! This is a true 8-Bit classic! I have decided to devote Side B to the e^"}xcellent Turbo BASIC! Boot without BASIC and select from the menu. To enter Turbo BASIC, simply press Reset at the menu. T^#}ype DIR [Return] and you'll see that your in Turbo BASIC - you can list the contents of a disk without going to DOS with the ^$}DIR command. Complete Turbo BASIC documentation can be found on NOSAUG PD Disks U04 and U23. There are five Turbo BASIC^%} programs on Side B. Horse Racing is a great game in which you must win six races. The battle down the home-straight is rea^&}lly exciting! Full docs are in the HORSRACE.DOC file. Random Music Maker (RMM) produces random musical notes in Turbo B^'}ASIC - the final tunes are pretty good! Word Counter, Loan and HexaDeci are three programs from the Turbo BASIC Programm^(}ing Kit which is reviewed in Software Scene. I have found all three to be very useful. So, there you have it - another ^)}issue of Futura packed with news, information and programs. I hope you enjoy it!Stuart J. Murray, Futura Editor.another \uFUTURA EDITORIAL - MARCH/APRIL 1993Futura 7 Please remember that Futura 7 - May/June 1993 and all subsequent issues b+}will ONLY be available direct from NOSAUG! Send to: S.J.Murray, NOSAUG, 71 Walker Road, Torry, Aberdeen, AB1 3DL, Scotland.b,} The 8-Bit goes marching on!Inside Atari Basic I have discovered that B&C ComputerVisions in the USA (see InfoFile) b-}are now selling copies of this excellent book for newcomers to programming in Atari BASIC. The book was released back in 198b.}3 and has been unavailable for many years. I decided to serialize a small part of this book in Futura due to this unavailabib/}lity (see Inside Atari Basic 1-4 in Futura issues 2-5). However, now that I've discovered that B&C are selling it for only $b0}5 (about 3.50 pounds) I have stopped my serialization. The book has lots more to offer including a excellent section on grapb1}hics and sound. A new intermediate-level programming column will begin in Futura 7 (depending upon a positive response to Qub2}estion 5 in the survey, see COMP.DOC).Advertising for Futura and NOSAUG You may have noticed lately that I have been b3}advertising Futura in a few 8-Bit publications. I have placed ads in the Page 6 Contact Column, Atari Classics Swap'n'Shop ab4}nd the TWAUG Newsletter. These ads have brought Futura to the attention of many 8-Bitters. I have now decided to begin a deb5}termined advertising campaign to ensure the growth of Futura subscriptions throughout 1993. I have started by placing anb6} advertisement with Page 6 Publishing for inclusion in Page 6 New Atari User 61 (April/May 1993). This was possible because b7}of the increase in the number of subscribers over the past few months. I hope to gain a few more subscriptions with this ad.b8} If this happens, I plan to place a quarter-page ad in Atari Classics as well as another small ad in Swap'n'Shop. Further ab9}ds will be placed in various 8-Bit publications throughout 1993. I will also send issues of Futura to these publications forb:} review. Finally, at the end of this year I hope to organise a NOSAUG stand at the All Mirco Show 7 down in Stafford. Thereb;} will be more details about this in future issues. With the advertising and reviews of Futura I hope to increase the amob<}unt of subscribers throughout 1993. I complete my Honours Degree at the beginning of June and would like to concentrate on Fb=}utura and NOSAUG on a full-time basis. This remains dependent on the amount of subscribers to Futura and the level of PD salb>}es from the NOSAUG PD Library. This is where you come in. If you know of anyone who may be interested in Futura or NOSAUG pb?}lease ask them to get in touch with me. The more sales I gain, the more time I can devote to the development of Futura and Nb@}OSAUG. However, whether it be part-time or full-time, I can guarantee you 100% effort on my part.Hypocrisy & The Grim ReabA}per I have just received issue 7 of this PD disk magazine and feel I must respond to comments made by the editor about FbB}utura and the NOSAUG PD Library. "If you no longer subscribe to Page 6 then you may not have heard of a new disk mag titbC}led 'FUTURA'. The disk is double sided, single density and contains programs, articles and the like. When first advertised bD}'FUTURA' was free if you sent a SAE, but now I think it costs #1.95. It is a good disk mag but one thing I must bring up is bE}the PD Library the editor runs. Putting commercial programs like Barkonid and Phantastic Journey into it is just not right. bF} Since when did PD programs have bad sectors? To order the disk mag..." John E., Editorial, The Grim Reaper 07, January 199bG}3. There are two central points of concern here: the price of Futura and the inclusion of commercial programs in the NOSbH}AUG PD Library.(i) The price of Futura, as you probably already know, is indeed #1.95. It has ALWAYS been #1.95! Issue onbI}e was also available if you sent me a blank disk and a SAE. However, I did not receive one single reply to the blank disk & bJ}SAE offer - only orders for #1.95 arrived. I therefor decided to offer Futura for #1.95 only. Anyway, I'm sure you will allbK} agree that this is a very reasonable price. The TGR Editor has implied that the first issue was free and that the price thebL}n increased to #1.95. There has NEVER been a price increase for Futura - it has always been #1.95! The TGR Editor forgot tobM} mention that Futura 1 was available at this price.(ii) The comments made by the TGR Editor concerning my operation of the bN}NOSAUG PD Library are most unwelcome! The two programs of concern are Barkonid and Phantastic Journey. He uses these disks bO}as passing examples instead of as the only two case examples, thus implying that the NOSAUG PD Library contains more than twobP} commercial disks. This is not true! I received UNPROTECTED versions of Barkonid and Phantastic Journey from one of my contbQ}acts just before the release of Futura 3. There were no bad sectors on either of the disks. Both myself and the contact belbR}ieved these disks to be in the public domain. I therefor placed them both in the provisional PD listing in Futura 3. Just abS}fter the release of Futura 3, I received a telephone call from the contact explaining that both disks were not PD and that thbT}ey were, in fact, commercial programs. I then closely examined both disks and noticed the words "DE-PROTECTED BY JOHN E." onbU} each title screen. They were indeed commercial programs which had been pirated. As soon as I confirmed this, I took both dbV}isks out of the provisional PD listing and formatted over them both! I then decided to completely reorganise the whole NOSAUbW}G PD Library to make sure such a mistake would not occur again. This reorganisation has only just been completed! Not one sbX}ingle copy of Barkonid or Phantastic Journey was ordered or sent out. I do not like to criticise the Editor of TGR withibY}n Futura but I felt I had to respond to his mistaken comments. I did write a letter to him at the beginning of February detabZ}iling the true facts and requesting a response but no reply was forthcoming. I detailed in my letter that if he had written b[}to me for the full facts the whole matter could have been avoided. Criticism is only valid when the full facts are availableb\}! The Atari 8-Bit needs all the support it can get just now. However, mistaken comments, such as those in the Editorialb]} of TGR07, are not the kind of support I wish to see! The inclusion of pirated commercial programs in PD libraries is indeedb^} "not right". I agree with this 100% and it is one of the main reasons I have spent many hours reorganising the NOSAUG PD Lib_}brary. What John E., the TGR Editor, forgets to mention is that the actual pirating of the programs in the first place is whb`}at caused this whole situation. The pirating of commercial software is the central cause of the decline in support for the 8ba}-Bit Atari! We have lost the support of dozens of software companies over the last few years (Datasoft, Origin, Electronic Abb}rts, Tynesoft, Zeppelin, Hi-Tec, etc.) due to these pirates. John E. conveniently forgets to mention this in his Editorial. bc} But, then again, who was it who de-protected Barkonid and Phantastic Journey? Hyprocrisy or what?Sound Monitor Professiobd}nal Docs Many thanks to those of you who wrote in offering to translate the German SMP Docs - I was very surprised when be}I received four offers of help with the translation. I wrote to the author of SMP a few weeks ago requesting documentation ibf}n English but have not yet received a reply. I will give him another two weeks to reply and then send out the Docs for transbg}lation to the 'Futura German Translation Team' (Hee! Hee!). Check out Futura 7 for more details. The Docs may even be inclubh}ded along with all the new .SNG files.Futura Competitions Thanx for the suggestions for new Futura Competitions. Herbi}e are some of them:- A competiton with a question about an adventure problem. Whoever sends in the answer/clue/map first wbj}ins the prize. (Steve Phillips, Bristol);- How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Answer: 1.4 x 10^27! (Alan Hitcbk}hen, Runcorn);- An Atari Classic wordsearch (sent by John McIntyre, Broxburn). Keep the feedback coming - Futura is YOUbl}R magazine! Let me know if you have any suggestions for future issues.Communications A couple of Futurians have recebm}ntly written to me requesting information on how to get on-line with their Atari 8-Bits. Here is what you need:(1) A Modembn}. Modems are rated by baud and range from 300 baud to 14400 baud! The higher the baud, the greater the speed of sending andbo} receiving data (and the greater the price!). A good value example is the Supra 2400 which retails for 79.95 pounds (First Cbp}omputer Centre - 0532-319444). For those with a lot of spare cash, the top of the range Supra-Fax 14400 is 270 pounds!(2) bq}An RS232 interface (to connect the modem to your Atari 8-Bit). Gralin International (see InfoFile) sell the Datari RS232 Intbr}erface for 29.99 pounds + 1.50 P&P.(3) Communications software. Page 6 sell Mini-Office II for only 9.95 pounds + 1 pound bs}P&P. I am very interested in beginning a new column dealing with communications and the Atari 8-Bit. Would anyone be wibt}lling to produce two or three articles? I can offer a free NOSAUG PD disk for each Comms article published in Futura. Pleasbu}e get in touch if you can help. I hope to be on-line this summer and will detail my adventures in the world of communicationbv}s in future issues of Futura.Correspondence & Submissions From the beginning of NOSAUG back in 1991 I have replied tobw} all NOSAUG and Futura letters and orders by personal letter. I believe it is essential to let people feel that they are invbx}olved in NOSAUG and Futura even though they may live some distance away. I have no intention of changing this policy; if anyby}thing, I wish to see everyone even more involved. However, I must ask you to understand that sometimes I have very little spbz}are time from my university, work and NOSAUG commitments. This occasional lack of spare time may lead to a slight delay in tb{}he reply to your letters. I make a concerted effort to answer all letters within seven days and I manage this about 90% of tb|}he time. I prefer including personal replies to letters and orders rather than just throwing the disks in an envelope. b}}However, this does sometimes add to the time it takes to reply. I write about 20-30 letters every week and this will increasb~}e if subscription numbers increase. This is why I have decided to make a commitment to all Futura subscribers. From Futura b}7 (May/June 1993) I will do my very best to reply to ALL orders, letters and questions within seven days. Most will be sent b}within three days! My girlfriend has agreed to assist in the copying of disks - this will help a great deal. A prompt and eb}fficient service can gain many new orders. I have decided to begin a new column within Futura entitled 'Futura Feedback'b}. If I can answer some of your questions within Futura the information will be available to all Futurians. After all, the ab}nswer to a question may help many other users with similar questions. I would like to see many more Futurians and NOSAUGb} members becoming actively involved with Futura. This is why I have decided to conduct an annual survey (see COMP.DOC). Youb}r views and opinions are essential to a successful and interesting disk magazine. Articles and programs are always welcob}me. I can offer a free NOSAUG PD disk or cassette for each article published. One Futurian has already offered to submit a b}couple of articles for Futura 7. If an 8-Bit subject is of interest to you it will be of interest to other Futurians too. b} Any news or information, no matter how small, can be of great interest to fellow Futurians. Many of the points mentioned b}in the 8-Bit News column have come from Futura readers. Reviews of commercial and PD programs are also most welcome. Twb}o Futurians have already agreed to produce reviews of NOSAUG PD software for inclusion in Futura 7. More reviewers are needeb}d. Why not review your favourite program, book or hardware add-on? I prefer to receive submissions as .DOC files on disb}k but hard-copies are fine. Don't worry about spelling mistakes, paragraphs, etc. - I'll tidy-up the text before I place it b}in Futura. I believe Futura has a future - a long and interesting future! I would like to thank you all for your supporb}t over the first six issues - it is very much appreciated! I hope you will continue to support Futura well into the future ab}nd join me on a wonderful journey of Atari 8-Bit computing. 2001 - here we come!Yours Atari-8-Bitly,Stuart J. Don Bell (whf}o has run the Library for seven years) reports that, "Unless we receive a substantial number of orders as a result of this laf}test supplement offer, I may be forced to stop supporting the Atari XL/XE computer!" A drop in the number of orders has madef} Don take stock of the likely future and he has made April 30th, 1993 his deadline. "If I receive a large response of ordersf} by APRIL 30th, then it'll be business as usual during 1993, and SUPPLEMENT #2 will be sent to current subscribers this Summef}r as planned." Allan Palmer states in his letter that he has been impressed by the the swift and efficient service of Bef}llcom and urges 8-Bitters to support Don Bell's efforts. Please give them your supf}port. With such support we will see them celebrating another ten years.** The new NOSAUG PD Disk Library listing has nowf} been completed! It is included within this issue (see DISKPD). The reorganisation took much longer than I anticipated but f}I'm sure you'll agree that it was worth the wait. There are approximately 100 disks in this first listing with lots more stif}ll to come! Prices are only 1.95 each, 1.50 each for five or more, or 1.00 each for ten or more. Now that really is value ff}or money! Please consider supporting the NOSAUG PD Library because it has taken a lot of work to put together and is centralf} to the future of both NOSAUG and Futura. Check out the next issue of Futura for another thirty new PD disks and some PD disf}k and cassette reviews! That's all the news for just now. See you next time!r another thirty new PD disks and some PD disdPFUTURA : PD OR NOT PD?by S.J.Murray, NOSAUG.[Futura is a disk-based magazine for the Atari 8-Bit. It is produced by the j}North Of Scotland Atari User Group (NOSAUG) and contains articles on various 8-Bit subjects, 8-Bit news from around the worldj}, and the latest European PD programs.] "Is Futura PD?" This is a question I am often asked by Futurians who wish to coj}py an issue for their friends. The simple answer is "yes". However, I would obviously prefer that 8-Bitters purchased Futurj}a direct from me to show their support for my efforts to produce a low-cost quality disk magazine. I would love for Futura tj}o remain in the public domain for all to enjoy if those who received it took the time to send to me for the next issue. Thisj} has happened on many occasions - especially from the Page 6 PD Library. However, to ensure the future survival of Futura, Ij} have had to make a very tough decision. From Futura 7 onwards, Futura will NOT be in the public domain. Issue 7 will probaj}bly be protected and will only be available direct from myself. This will not affect current subscribers in any way. Wij}th the addition of this issue (Futura 6) there are now six issues of Futura in the public domain. These issues have featuredj} some of the very best public domain and shareware programs available today... Sound Monitor Professional, Cyrtabor, Atari Drj}um Macine, Jump, How To Meet Cows, Howfen, Omidor, DeskTop V1.5, etc, etc, etc. As well as this, you get a 30-40 page magazij}ne / newsletter (when you print out the .DOC files). This high level of quality will be maintained and even improved upon asj} Futura develops throughout the 1990s. Futura issues 1-6 may be copied and passed on by any individual as long as there j}is no exchange of money involved! If you run a PD Library, please write to me, enclosing your Library listings and costs, toj} request permission to place Futura in it. This way, I can ensure that 8-Bitters are not over-charged for Futura. I have noj} desire to make a large profit from Futura and do not wish to see others do so at the expense of the user. Taking Futuraj} out of the public domain was a very hard decision to make. However, as I have already stated, I MUST ensure the future survj}ival of the mag! The first few issues of Futura have travelled all over the world. Unfortunately, many who have received anj}d enjoyed an issue have not taken the time to send to me for the next issue. I have therefor had to follow the same path as j}those at Mega-Mag and take Futura out of the public domain. In summary, please consider supporting Futura by either sendj}ing for a single issue or a six-issue subscription. Check out the very favourable reviews in Page 6 New Atari User Issue 59 j}(p36-37). I produce Futura in my spare time. Each issue takes 50-70 hours to complete aj}nd many keyboard sessions last well into the wee hours. I do it because I love my 8-Bit. Futura will survive for a very lonj}g time to come and will develop and improve along the way. My main goal is to produce a professionally printed newsletter / j}magazine with an accompanying disk of original programs supplimented with the very best of current public domain software. Ij} plan to reach this goal by the end of this year. Hopefully, you will join me on my journey. The 8-Bit goes marching on!Sj}tuart J. Murray, Futura Editor.N.B.
