Wasn't the latest issue of Page 6 amajor disappointment? I can stillremember the )}days when I wouldliterally catch the magazine before itplopped onto my carpet and rip off thecover to read the delights wi)}thin. Ifear those days are gone for good, butyou must subscribe to Page 6, it is thelast landmark for wayward Atari8-bitt)}ers and we would be lost withoutit. Please subscribe to it and let'stry to make it great again. Major plug here for James )}Haworth andhis high-score lists. James has reallyput a lot of hard work into creatingand compiling these lists and he is n)}otgetting the response he deserves. Ifanyone has seen the high-scores liststhen you'll notice it is mostly full ofhigh-sc)}ores from messrs Chan, Espinoand the Vesty's. Send James a blankdisk and a SAE and he'll send you hishigh-score disk. It m)}ay just raiseyour interest in those old games as youtry desperately to beat the presenthigh-score! James' address is: 86A)}shtree Road, Oadby, Leics. LE2 5TD. If you no longer subscribe to Page 6then you may not have heard of a newdisk-mag title)}d 'FUTURA'. The disk isdouble sided, single density andcontains programs, articles and thelike. When first advertised 'FUT)}URA'was free if you sent a SAE, but now Ithink it costs #1.95. It is a gooddisk-mag but one thing I must bring upis the P)}D library the editor runs.Putting commercial programs likeBarkonid and Phantastic Journey into itis just not right. Since )}when did PDprograms have bad sectors? To orderthe disk-mag send cheques/PO's to:S.J.Murray, 71 Walker Road, Torry,Aberdee)}n, AB1 3DL. From this month 'Excel' will only cost#2.50 per issue with a six issuesubscription costing #15. This is awise)} move from Robert Stuart as heknows that people wouldn't be willingto pay #4 for a disk-mag when there arecheaper alternat)}ives like News-Disk,FUTURA, TGR and the up-and-comingnewsletter and disk from TWAUG. Also from this month we may get a few)}more readers of TGR. I have finallydecided to send a letter into Page 6for their contact section invitingpeople to send m)}e a SAE and one ortwo disks for the latest issues. (TEBSF)(B- SPOS: Speeder Plus Operating System --- A new OS for the XL/XE Ataris -----------------------------------------Maybe-} you've already read about the newOS in the Mega-Magazine #4. It wasreviewed by the brother of the producerand someone cou-}ld ask: "Is it really sogood?" - That's the reason why I'mwriting this article! So, here's a test of the new OS!You get th-}e new OS on an EPROM, whichhas to be soldered on your old OS. Theprice also includes a switch to selectbetween old and new-} operating system.Installation of the new SPOS is notdifficult but if you've never workedwith a soldering iron before, bet-}terask someone else to install it, becausethere is not much space when you solderthe new OS onto the old one! After you ma.}naged the installation, youcan be glad to have a new, powerful OS.If you switch on the computer with theSELECT-key hold do.}wn you get into themenu of SPOS (see disk file!). The old(and silly!) SELF-TEST is gone now!Well, the most important impr.}ovement isthat you're now able to run mostsoftware under high-speed (US-Doubler,Happy, etc). So you're able to workwith M.}YDOS under US-speed or boot menudisks (e.g.NoDos Converter) with highspeed (hi Spite!) - Of course only ifyou have a 1050 .}with US-doubler, etc!The second improvement is that you canexchange your disk drives. You're nowable to boot from drive 2!.}This is also a great thing but I mustsay that it doesn't work with everysoftware!Another fine thing is a built in C:Sim-.}ulator, now you can run your Cassette-Software from disk! There is also thepossibility to insert freezer pokes(e.g. for in.}finite lives), this soundsgreat but it'll work only with programswhich are RESET-resistant!Further functions are: - You c.}an save the whole program into the Ramdisk with START+SELECT (for computers with at least 128)- Modify drive (turn US-do. }ubler slow)- Universal loader (load up to 20 *.COM or *.BAS files)- Goto memopad (forget this function!)- Run address- . }Insert program (You can insert your program from ramdisk into memory. Does only work with RESET-resistant prgs.)- Qu. }itAnother important improvement is thatyou can cause a coldstart whenever youwant, even with RESET-resistantprograms (jus. }t hold down SHIFT whilepressing RESET!)I think that's all!So, if anybody is interested in the newSPOS, here's the addres. }s where you canorder it:TOP-Magazin-Versandc/o Tobias GeutherAlfred-Reinhardt-Str.73 aO-4073 Halle (Saale)GermanyThe .}price is about 40,- german marks.I am working with the new SPOS forabout one month and I'm fully satisfiedwith it. There .}are only a few programswhich will not run with it (e.g. KULT),but for this you can turn on your oldOS again.Mr.Bacardi,|PONDERING ABOUT MAX's---------------------reviewed by Richard GoreI first heard about this game in issue56 of New Atari2} User. There was one andhalf pages of material outlining thegame but revealing very little aboutthe game's content. This a2}rticle istherefore (hopefully!) going to providea further insight into the game as wellas detailing my experiences in tryi2}ngto buy the game. The stated price was $12.95 (for theversion without fancy packaging, withfancy packaging it was $10 m2}oreexpensive) which at that time (fourmonths ago) worked out too about sevenpounds. This seemed to be veryreasonable afte2}r all the disk is doublesided and was said to contain threegames and a demo. However the company,Change In Heat wanted pay2}ment in USdollars or via an IMO (InternationalMoney Order) or a similar Bank Draft. This is where the problems began. Then2}ext day I paid a visit to my bank('NAT WEST') expecting to be chargedtwo or three pounds for the IMO, boywas I mistaken, t2}hey wanted sevenpounds fifty (I believe it is now tenpounds). I made my excuses and left. Inext visited the post office on2}ly to betold they charge seventeen pounds for a similar IMO. Feeling most unhappy I decided to giveit one more try and wen2}t into anotherbank (the Midlands). They charge aboutthe same as the Nat West, however theman in there was very helpful and2}suggested I buy some US dollars andsend them in a registered envelope (Iremembered this was acceptable toChange in Heat, 2}so this was the courseI followed). I didn't even bank withthem but he said the fee would be twopounds, free if I had my ac2}count withthem. Thanking him I left to see if mybank could do any better. No chance, three fifty was the fee whether Ibank2}ed there or not. So I returned tothe Midlands (where I was charged onlyone pound!) and bought my dollars. Thenonto the pos2}t office, total cost ofposting was two pounds fourty. By thistime my wallet was feeling rather thinso I returned home and 2 }waited for myparcel to arrive. About three weeks later a hefty'Jiffy Bag' with an American postmarkthuded onto my door ma2!}t. After findingmy way into the bag I found one blackdisk (without even a label on it) in arather novel jacket, an interes2"}tinginstruction booklet and a short lettergiving additional hints on how to playthe game. Even this 'cheap' version hadbe2#}tter produced instructions than mostof the games here in England. The three games on the disk are:-P.A.M, The Dream & Bar2$} Room Brawl. Thefirst two are very similar platformgames (on side 1 of the disk) while theother, Bar Room Brawl is what th2%}e titlesuggests a beat em up type game set ina bar. The story line which isexplained brilliantly in theinstructions book 2&}is original and wellthought out. Things are supposed tolink together and to some extent theydo, for example the demo (whic2'}h can beloaded at any time) is meant to be theend game sequence and quite good it istoo. P.A.M. and The Dream are both ve2(}rysimilar platform games. Both have goodquality, colourful intro screens, butno title music. You start each gamewith thre2)}e lives and each level has atime limit. The character you controlis a rather hefty bloke with a verylarge head. His animat2*}ion is superbthroughout the entire game(s). If he isleft standing about he will stomp hisfoot. The usual running and jumpi2+}ng optionsare used via a joystick [in port 1].The object of each level is to guideyour character to the animated Maxsymbo2,}l, collisions with fire balls, buggles and other nasties must beavoided or you will lose one of yourlives. Once your game i2-}s over (and itwill be quite quickly) you will hear amusical ditty, either Twinkle, TwinkleLittle star or what sounds like 2.}a shortsegment from the Twilight Zonedepending on which game you areplaying. Overall they are two very goodplatform games2/}, sounds are a littlethin on the ground but the graphics aregood. The only problem is the games areVERY VERY hard to play.20}You need plenty of practice just to getpast the first screen. Bar Room Brawl (BRB) is a completelydifferent game and is q21}uite unique. Yousimply have to fight and clear the roomof brawlers. They are in fact beardedstunt men, so don't worry abou22}t hurtingthem when you smash a chair or a glassbottle on them! Punches, dodging etccan all be controlled from thejoystick23}, however these controls take alittle getting used to. The graphicsare again very good and the sound isonly average but th24}e controls are alittle slow at responding. BRB is aunique game and with a bit of practiceturns out to be a challenging pie25}ce ofsoftware. Overall this 'game' has to be worthbuying, it is original, has goodgraphics and an amusing story line as26}well as being good value for money, however be warned it is verychallenging and will take many monthsto complete (which is 27}what the designerMark Peters aimed for). The best way is to buy $13 US dollarsand send them in a registered envelope.Chan28}ge in Heat's address is:- Change In Heat 12 BELLA VISTA PLACE IOWA CITY IOWA 52245 USA Postage and packing are includ29}ed inthe price.N.B. The name Change in Heat may seemrather strange, however they use thedelta symbol (a triangle) follow2:}ed by acapital letter H as their logo, deltaH, which all chemists should knowstands for change in heat when referedto the2;}rmodynamics of reactions, actually it stands for change inenthalpy (at constant pressure) whichfor most purposes is heat, b2<}ut now I'mgetting too scientific so here ends the review of P.A.M. I hope you like it!0XNews---- I have some good news for all youAtari 8-bit users out there. Recentlythanks to the efforts of one Derek Ferna6>} number of new games have beenreleased for our machines, and thereally good news is there are more tofollow. The following6?} article willpresent a brief account of what's tocome and a review of one of the firstgames to be released, The LastGuard6@}ian. The Last Guardian (TLG from now) wasoriginally programmed by Chris Murrayand intended for release by Tynesoft,howev6A}er they gave up the support forour machine and the game never saw thelight of day (officially!). Howeverseveral years late6B}r one enterprisingchap has acquired the rights to thisand other games. If anybody knows whereChris Murray is now please le6C}t me knowbecause he apparently has more gamesprogrammed but nobody ever releasedthem! Onto the review. The game is a vert6D}ically scrollingshoot em up in a similar manner toMirax Force (also by Chris Murray), Isuppose TLG could really be called6E}Mirax Force 2. The main screen is splitinto three sections; a message line atthe top, a large play area in themiddle and t6F}he score/status area at thebottom. The work put into each sectionis incredible, lots of colour andanimation. Of course you6G}r ship has anenergy shield (what self respectingspace craft wouldn't?) represented as ahorizontal fuzzy bar in the status6H}area. You travel upwards with the screenscrolling smoothly downwards (you knowthe format) as you fly over the hull ofa la6I}rge warship. You must shoot itsemplacements and shoot/avoid anyoncoming enemy space craft. There arerotating turrets on th6J}e warship thatmust also be avoided. When you destroya space craft a power up of some sortmay appear, most provide help but6K} somecan destroy you. There is so much goingon at once it gets quite hard to tellwhat is what. You must attack thewarship6L} five times and traverse aasteroid field, once this is completeyou have a chance to attack themothership. Wow! You may ge6M}t the feeling I like thisgame and you'd be right, fantasticgraphics are its hallmark but there isalso some digitised speec6N}h and nicespot effects. I feel it is moreplayable than Mirax Force because youdon't move quite so fast or bouncearound bu6O}t there is still plenty goingon! If you are serious about keeping the8-bit alive and like a good blast emyou must buy thi6P}s game. If it issuccesful more will follow. One final note, this game (andhopefully most of the others to follow)is avail6Q}able on three formats, disk, standard tape and Rambit Turbo fasttape, a sensible move to make itavailable too as many peopl6R}e aspossible. Prices 5.95 disk, 4.95 tape.STOP PRESS: Just announced this game isalso to be distributed in the USA andth6S}roughout Europe, so if you havefriends abroad be sure to tell themabout it, better still send them a copyof this disk mag!6T}* In recent weeks I have also hearddetails of some more new gamesarriving, Tagalon, a split screensearching type game fo6U}r one or twoplayers is ready now, another game fromTynesoft that never made it. Operation Blood, a clone of OperationWo6V}lf is nearly here. The disks havearrived all that is needed now is someEnglish instructions. It is said tohave fantastic g6W}raphics, ask the editorI know he has seen this game before! Hans Kloss, infiltrate the enemy HQand obtain Hitler's plans6X} for theinvasion of Europe. Johnny's Problem, one of those slidethe tiles to make a picture games, thisone though has d6Y}igitised pictures offilm stars including Woody Allen! ADAX, apparently Mission Shark 2 withbetter graphics and bigger sp6Z}rites. All the above games are or will beavailable from Derek Fern at MicroDiscount. Full reviews and more detailswill 6[}appear on a future issue of TGR.Watch this space as they say.* More good news, Dean Garraghty whoruns a large P.D. librar6\}y and createsNews-Disk has acquired the rights tobring most of PPP's products into thiscountry. They include the excellent6]}Quick programming language, the gamesRubberball, Glaggs It! and Minesweeperinitially with hopefully more tofollow. The pr6^}ices are as yet undecidedbut Quick will sell for about 15 poundsand the games for around six! Morenews, he also hopes to b6_}ring some ofthe Speedy 1050 drive mods in as wellgiving fast disk copying and doublecapacity for your disks.* That's abo6`}ut all from me for thisissue, keep an eye out for these andother new items and don't forgetsubscribe to New Atari User/Pag6a}e 6 theyneed your support as much as we needtheirs!Richard Gore4DTop Ten 810 Tips (part II)--------------------------6)Fit a Winchester fan to your 810; just for fun. Just t:e}hink of all the laughs you will have when your 'friend' soils his trousers and faints, mistaking it for a letter bomb.:f} (Because this joke is a bit sick only do it on April Fools Day! My name is Jeff akaAlias Maximus, and I thought I wouldtake my turn to do a 'Your Page' as I'msure that very>n} soon John will beswamped by all the Y.P's you avid TGRfans will be sending in, and I wouldhave to wait absolutely ages fo>o}r mineto be included (ahem). Well here we go. I have only been amember of the Atari 8-bit elite forabout eight months, bu>p}t my firstencounters with this computer date backabout six years, when a friend ofmine at school found out that I owneda >q}Spectrum and I was a keen adventurebuff. This person was no other than theinfamous John E. (TEBSF), who soonbegan to beg m>r}e for hints on the ScottAdams adventure 'Spiderman', to whichof course I kindly obliged. This'friendship' (I use the word >s}withreservation) resulted in John invitingme back to his house so that I couldsee all the adventures he had for hisAtari.>t} These were mainly 'MysteriousAdventurers' and also, if my memoryserves me correctly he had a copy of'Lords of Time'. (He >u}also showed me arather strange game called 'The Schoolof Death' which he had written himself.I shall say nothing about tha>v}t game asI'm sure he will only edit it out!!!).Anyway, my story takes a break thereand doesn't begin again until a fewyea>w}rs later when John somehow acquireda 1050 disk drive (complete with ZorkII) and I was impressed. Over the next few years J>x}ohn'scollection of adventures grew and grew, and every time he got hold of a newInfocom game I would travel the wearypath >y}to his house and he would let meplay on one for about fifteen minutes, before telling me his disk drive neededa rest. Final>z}ly this grew too much forme and I decided to buy an Atari formyself. It was around this time that John andI came up with >{}the idea of forming anAtari users group. We spent the betterpart of a day trying to come up with asuitably impressive name>|}, until finallyI was struck by a sizzling bolt ofinspiration. 'Hey John! What about AURA? Soundsgreat huh?' 'Yeah,' says>}} he. 'but what does itmean?' 'Well it means err.."The Atari Unionof R something A something"' said I. So a legend was bor>~}n. 'The AtariUnion of R something A something' anda few hours later we came up with'Rabid Apostles' (Well you try thinking>}of something). All we needed now was afew more members. First we asked one ofJOHN'S friends 'El Diablo' to join (ourfirst>} mistake). Then we asked the oneand only Spite Ripsoft to join... 'Nar!' he said, but came around thenext day with a rathe>}r natty AURA logo. The result of this can be seen in theAURA intro demo and on John's AURAmenus. Then he begged to join us,>} andwho were we to turn him down? (I mean Ididn't even own an Atari at the time) A few days later John 'acquired' acopy o>}f 'Moonmist' by Infocom, thismade me take the final step and off Iwent to buy an Atari. John and I went off to get hold of>} anAtari and disk drive. Unfortunately thefirst person we visited only had an 810disk drive (in fact when we went roundto>} his house his family had thrown atea towel over it and were using it asa camp bed in the guestroom). I decidednot to buy >}this because you can't getenhanced density on an 810 and thatmeans I wouldn't be able to play 'ThePawn'. But anyway, a fe>}w days later I boughtan 800XL, 1050 disk drive with doublerchips, a 822 printer(???) and lots ofdisks, all for 100 quid. S>}o here I ameight months later, proud owner of anAtari 8-bit. (TEBSF)You'll get bored of these before I do!*Boulderdash 19F}22----------------Author unknownWell, I only had 12 sectors free andthis fitted nicely!D^AMS6----Well, for want of being extremelyoriginal, I give you MY account of therecent AMS6.* I had planned to crawl ouJ}t of bed atsix, this would have given me ampletime to have a nice cup of tea and abath before I was due to meet Spite andJ}Alias Maximus outside the latters houseat seven. Unfortunately I didn't get tobed until 5.30 and so when the alarmsounded J}at six I decided to have 'fivemore minutes' and didn't wake up untiltwenty to seven. It was all rush thenand my idea of haJ}ving a relaxing bathwent out of the window, the best Icould manage was to splash a bit ofwater on my face. Anyhow when I J}got to AM's house he andSpite were already waiting for me andboth claimed they had been doing so forfifteen minutes (I latJ}er found out thiswas a lie). We had decided to walk intoManchester because we had plenty oftime, the train not being due uJ}ntil8.18. It took us about an hour to reachPiccadilly station (much longer thanwe had anticipated) and so we boughtour tJ}ickets (#9.50 return) and waitedfor the train to arrive. When the train did arrive we werefaced with a bit of a dilemma. TJ}herewere three of us which meant one wouldhave to sit all on his own. Both Spiteand AM dashed to get a window seat andso J}I took my place next to AM, Spitehad put on his walkman (Danni Minogue)so I didn't think I'd get muchconversation out of hJ}im. The train ride passed smoothly with mealternatively sitting next to AM andSpite, giving them both the pleasure ofmy cJ}ompany. We arrived at Stafford train stationat approx 9.30 and after a quick use ofthe toilet we set out for Bingley Hall.J} We didn't have a clue where it was,but surely it couldn't be too far fromthe train station? How terribly wrongwe were! AJ}fter half-an-hours aimlesslywandering around and being ignored bythe locals who we asked directionsfrom we decided to get J}a taxi. Why didwe not do this in the first place? Itonly cost #4 and we shared the costbetween the three of us. ExcellentJ}! We were here at last!Unfortunately we didn't order anytickets and thus had to queue up but itdidn't take long and then wJ}e were in! After another quick dash to the toiletwe set off around the stalls, losingSpite after about five minutes. ThefJ}irst thing I bought were some oldAnalog mags for 50p each and then wedecided to visit Derek Ferns stall andbuy some blank J}disks. Fifty blank diskswere bought but I still can't figureout why I was charged #5.50. Anyway Itried to get some more diJ}sks from Mrs.Fern but she was having none of it, Isent AM back for some more and off wewent again. The next stall we visiJ}ted was theTiger Developments stall. I had a nicechat with Raphael Espino but he didn'tseem to like me telling him he shouJ}ldhave put a high-score save feature in'Speed Fox'. I also talked to NeilOttaway about his forthcoming game'Lizard', on wJ}hich he does the codingand the graphics are by Robert Stuartof Excel fame. I ordered 'Lizard' forthe special show price ofJ} #4 and I wasextremely pleased when Neil recognisedmy name as being a regular buyer! Itried to persuade Spite to buy it buJ}this philosophy of "I'd copy it but Iwouldn't buy it" shone through again. Ican only assume that he doesn't care. In the J}meantime Spite had gone off andcame back to tell us that he'd foundsomewhere where they were selling 100disks for a fiver!J} We quickly dashedover and after a quick check to makesure the disks had hub rings (my drivewill not format them if they hJ}aven't) Ipurchased 200. On another stall I bought a 65XEcomputer for a fiver. No guarantee thatit worked, but for that prJ}ice I couldnot complain. When I got it home andtried it I was overjoyed to find thatit worked! Unfortunately it doesn'tanJ}ymore. My bag was becoming increasingly heavyand my wallet was getting smaller. Ihad only set out with 100 quid and I'dboJ}rrowed forty of that, so I wanted tomake sure I arrived home with at leastforty pounds to repay my debts. Spite and AM decJ}ided to get some foodand I was very thirsty so I thought I'dgo along and buy a can of diet-coke.60p! And it was the vastlyJ} inferiordiet-pepsi! I don't know how much AMand Spite paid for their food but theydidn't seem to have much of it. We decJ}ided to have one last walkaround and then we'd set off for thelong journey home. I visited DeanGarraghty's stall and he kiJ}ndly gave mea copy of 'Atari Classics' which is agood read. I also met Richard Gore onthat stall and Spite had a chat withJ}one of his contacts, James Haworth. Wehad a look at James' high-score listand oh'd and ah'd at some of thehigh-scores we J}could beat. Actually, according to Spite, I was trying tochat-up young Mr. Haworth. Where doeshe get these from?? We chattJ}ed with friends for awhile andthen decided to set off for the trainstation. Skinflints that we are wedecided to walk ratheJ}r than call ataxi. On the way to the station AM andI were delighted to see a squirrelcalmy eating in a tree. Spite couldn'J}tunderstand our euphoria but then heisn't one with nature. Spite popped into a shop to buysome cigs or something. AM and J}I werewaiting outside but I decided to gointo the Co-Op next door and buy acan of diet-Tango. Unfortunately wedidn't infoJ}rm Spite we were doing thisand when we came out of the store Spitewas quite a long-way ahead. We shoutedand waved but he dJ}idn't stop and itwasn't until we reached the trainstation that we caught up with him. Our journey home was eventless, spoiJ}led only by Spite swanning off toa smoking compartment and leaving AMand I to our own company.
