Major upgrades can be A?} done in a couple of hours. If such is the case, and I believe Mr. Pazel when he says it is, there is no more iA@}ncentive for organizations to avoid fixing their mainframe's Y2K problems, if any such problems exist. Yes, proAA}grammers might have to be hired for big bucks. But the alternatives can cause major problems for those organizAB}ations. Mr. Pazel also criticizes my letter to Joe Hicswa, most justifiably, where I imply that a mainframe inAC} Organization A may give another mainframe in Organization B a report that Organization A is about to go bankruAD}pt as a result of false information generated in Organization A due to a Y2K problem. He states, correctly, thAE}at human intervention should prevent such a situation from happening. Hopefully, responsible people will step in AF}where this is necessary. I'm reminded of a situation many years ago. Our military had built a series ofAG} radar installations (the DEW Line) to provide a distant early warning against missle attacks by the formerAH} Soviet Union. One day, a blip showed up on the radar, quickly followed by more and still more! It looked as though AI} the Soviets were throwing their entire arsenal at us, and then, MANY TIMES their entire arsenal! When the ofAJ}ficers watching this phenomenon finally realized that the Soviets couldn't possibly have so many missles and beganAK} to doubt that such an attack was realy taking place, the resulting alert was called off. It was discovered that tAL}he DEW system was responding to the moon coming over the horizon, an event against which it hadn't been AM}programmed! In short, we need responsible people in responsible positions who will intervene when somethinAN}g that appears dire is really the result of a Y2K problem. As Mr. Pazel says, "My point here is that most (if not allAO}) companies are aware of their Y2K exposures and will have steps in place to handle any unforseen problems. ThoAP}se that don't probably don't have much of a future, anyway." Mr. Pazel does, however, recognize that there are systemAQ}s out there with Y2K problems. Those problematic systems are not limited to mainframes. They may alsoAR} include PCs and other computers and the software that runs on them. One illustration was brought home to meAS} during a coffee break at our last OHAUG meeting. Some of the guys were discussing Timewise, a time- manageAT}ment program Atari put out some years ago. Timewise has a Y2K problem. However, if the only one dependent on AU} the output of the program is the owner of the program, that owner needs to know that he/she can substitute the yeaAV}r 1972 for 2000 and the program will work properly. Problem solved at the one-operator, one-dependent level. Or, taAW}ke the case of electric typewriters (or other appliances, for that matter) with imbedded electronics forAX} maintaining time and date. Joe Hicswa had such a typewriter and sent it back to the factory because it had a Y2K AY} problem. Joe didn't make it clear in his post card to me whether the typewriter was recalled by its manufacturer, oAZ}r he discovered the problem and sent it back. In either case, the manufacturer is going to remedy the situation.A[} I wonder how much brand loyalty that manufacturer could muster if it were publicized that they refused to remedy sucA\}h Y2K problems in their equipment! You'd have to be living in a cave on a mountaintop (with no radio, no TV and no A]} laptop) to claim that you're not aware of Y2K these days. Everybody has probably heard and seen the same jokes A^}and dire reports that I've seen. Acting responsibly to fix the problem -- or at least maintaining a calm dA_}emeanor when faced with the results of that problem not getting fixed elsewhere - - should be everyA`}one's responsibility. Closer to our Atari 8-bit hearts, for those of us who use SpartaDos and an RTime-8 cartridge, fAa}or example, should be a willingness to upgrade from version 3.2d to 3.2g. Thanks, Joe Hicswa, and thanks to TAb}homas Pazel for pointing out what I had overstated. I invite comment, as usual, on this or any other topic raised inAc} this newsletter. Alan Sharkis Editor o=o=o=o=o=@G o=o=o=o=o= All I Know About Computers I Learned From My Mom This article comes from the NEe}ovember 1998 issue of the JACG Newsletter. It was submitted by DAVE GOODWIN. For years I badgered my mother with quEf}estions about whether Santa Claus is a real person or not. Her answer was always, "Well... you asked for the presenEg}ts and they came, didn't they?" I finally understood the full meaning of her reply when I heard the definition of a Eq}B%DOS SYSB*)DUP SYSB>SNEWSLTR BASBMAINMENUHLPBWELCOME SCRBWELCOME BASBCWHO TXTBDMEETDATTXTBAUTORUN SYSB KEMAIL TXTBHELP DOCBPRESSPRTMNUBPRESSPRTHLPBEPRESMESTXTB"GNOVMIN TXTB"HDECMIN TXTB12IY2K02 TXTBdJMOM TXTBeDARKHORSBASbDRAW b RAM b;DRAWPOKEARBQCHESS BAS2PANZER BASEJWEBSTER BASBSKULLS BAS-FEDMES TXT virtual device: "A software or hardware entity which responds to commands in a manner indistinguishable from Er} the real device." Mother was telling me that Santa Claus is avertual person (simulated by loving parents) Es}who responds to requests from children in a manner indistinguishable from the real saint. Mother also taughtEt} the IF...THEN...ELSE structure: "If it's snowing, then put your boots on before you go to school; otherwisEu}e just wear your shoes." Mother explained the difference between batch and transaction processing: "We'llEv} wash the white clothes when we get enough of them to make a load, but we'll wash these socks out right now by hanEw}d because you'll need them this afternoon." Mother taught me about linked lists. Once, for a birthday party, she laidEx} out a treasure hunt of ten hidden clues, with each clue telling where to find the next one, the last one leadingEy} to the treasure. She then gave us the first clue. Mother understood about parity errors. When she counted socEz}ks after doing the laundry, she expected to find an even number and groaned when only one sock of a pair emerged froE{}m the washing machine. Later she applied the principles of redundancy engineering to this problem by buying our sE|}ocks three identical pairs at a time. This greatly increased the odds of being able to come up with at least one matE}}ching pair. Mother had all of us children write Christmas thank you notes to Grandmother, one after another, oE~}n a single sheet of paper which was then mailed in a single envelope with a single stamp. This was obviously an inE}stance of blocking records in order to save money by reducing the number of physical I/O operations. Mother used flags tE}o help her manage the housework. Whenever she turned on the stove, she put a potholder on top of her purse to remind E}herself to turn it off again before leaving the house. Mother knew abut devices which raise an interrupt signal to bE}e serviced when they have completed any operation. She had a whistling teakettle. Mother understud abouE}t LIFO ordering. In my lunch bag she put the desert on the bottom, the sandwich in the middle, and the napkin on topE} so that things would come out in the right order at lunchtime. There is an old story that God knew He couldn't bE}e physically present everywhere at once, to show His love for His people, and so He created mothers. That is thE}e difference between centralized and distributed processing. As any kid who's ever misbehaved at a neighbor's E} house finds out, all the mothers in the neighborhood talk to each other. We're somewhat obvlivious to the current political scene, and we're in the mood to start selecting candidatk}es for the next presidential election. Of course, in our country, the way in which this is done varies by party and k}state. Of course, both parties have conventions at the national level, but the method that attracts the most attk}ention at the statewide level is the primary election. Soooo, we've started out Side 1 with DARKHORS.BAS, whichk} runs from the spacebar. You become the potential candidate. You'll need pencil and paper to play this game for k}sure, as you try to go up against a very popular senator in the New Hampshire primary. There's lots of data tk}o gather, and a limited amount of money to spend. Your goal is not only to beat the senator, by getting enough populk}ar and financial support. The first time you try to run this game, read the directions! The screens will guide k}you. Our member, JOE HICSWA, contributed a TurboBasic program, Draw Poker, which is also found on Side 1. To k}use it, format a blank disk and write DOS files to it using the "H" option of the DOS menu. Then copy the locked filek}s (those whose filenames have asterisks next to them) from Side 1 to your newly prepared disk. Finally, rename thek} file "DRAW" to "AUTORUN.SYS" and the file "RAM" to "RAMDISK.COM" on the new disk. Put the new disk in drive 1, rebk}oot your computer, and follow the screen directions. Joe did an exceptional job on this game, with a little help k}from RON FETZER. You should also look for a file called CHESS.COM. This file came from our copy of Pool Disk k} Too. It was included in Page 6 disk 80, but came from the SPECTRUM OF ERIE group. I've decided to put some morek} BASIC games on Side 1. The following three came from Pool Disk Too, the Colonia Disk 124, side A: SKULLS.BAS,k} PANZER.BAS and WEBSTER.BAS. SKULLS.BAS is The Seven Skulls, and involves your positioning a game piece ik}n one of seven positions and pressing the fire button. When you do, three of the seven skulls pictured abovek} will rotate ninety degrees. The object of the game is to get them all facing correctly, but you have a limited numbk}er of moves in which to do it! PANZER.BAS is a two- player joystick game in which two tanks must shoot away the X'k}s, and then each other, without coming too close to either! WEBSTER.BAS is a sort of Centipede in reverse. The k}spider is the hero. He drops on a strand of web to eat up the small bug, but watch out for that big one! Eating ik}t makes you lose a life. Side two puts you into a different kind of fight. You have to protect your territory and tk}he life within it from vultures! You control a vulture-removal device with a joystick plugged into pork}t 0. The opening screen gives you further details. The game VULTURES.BAS runs from the spacebar. In additionk}, please look on side 2 for OIL.COM, a fabulous demo produced by Atari of England and enhanced with title screek}ns that were added later. Also on Side 2 look for PEGSUS.COM, a pinball game. Use your joystick to control thek} ball, and your fire button to control the flippers. Finally, look for FF.COM, which was at one time a comk}mercial game. Excerpt from the docs for this game follows: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Arrange the blk}ocks within the 4x4 grid such that adjacent sides of neighboring blocks have the same color. This condition k}holds for all sides of each square in the grid. Example: The solid green block is placed in the top left hand squak}re of the grid. This means that the left side of the block placed in the square just to the right of this sk}olid green block must also be the same green color. Also, the block to be placed in the square just below this solik}d green block must have it's top half the very same green color. I know this sounds a bit confusing at first, but don't wk}orry. The computer will not allow you to make an illegal move. So, place all 16 blocks within the grid. If you can! Mk}ove the gold cursor with the joy- stick in port #1. Position the cursor over the block that you wish to place k}on the grid and press the fire button. A brown outline is placed around the selected block. Now move the cursk}or over the vacant square in the grid where you wish to place the block and press the fire button again. If you k} change your mind and wish to select another block, just position the cursor over the block with the brown outk}line and press the fire button to clear your selection. If you wish to remove a block from a square on the grk}id, simply place the cursor over the block and press the fire button. This action cannot be done while you have a blok}ck selected (one with a brown outline) to be placed in a square on the grid. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -k} - All three .COM files on Side 2 came from the "Treasure" folder on Pool Disk Too. I hope you enjoy this issue.k} o=o=o=o=o=on Side 2 came from the "Treasure" folder on Pool Disk Too. I hope you enjoy this issue.h
