MARK, we welcome you to the club. ITEMS: The club decided to send a donation 9?}of $10.00 to the PAUL PETRARO BONE MARROW DRIVE. PAUL has chronic leukemia and has 4 months to live unless a s9@}uitable donor is found. AL SHARKIS passed around a flyer from JEFF MC WILLIAMS, which he found on BBS. JEFF as9A}ked us to send him a postcard by March 31, 1992. He said if he gets 500 postcards then he can approach the editors of A9B}IM to print an 8-Bit Magazine. [Ed. When I got home after the meeting, I received a call from ANTHONY FALCONE, our B9C}RONX member. He said he got a letter from BEN POEHLAND, our Pennsylvania member, advising us OL' HACKERS that he9D} has given all our names and addresses as joiners of this push to get an all 8 BIT magazine sarted. HERES HOPI9E}NG!] LIAUG has a BBS meeting on March 7. They will demonstrate how to use a BBS, how a BBS works, etc. Hands on e9F}xperience and hints on how to get the most out of a BBS. It is conducted by JIM HARRIS. All are welcome. 9G} It is held at the NESCONSET BRANCH OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. It should be very interesting. ANNUAL DINNER: We d9H}iscussed when and where we should hold our annual dinner affair. ALLEN ATKINS and ALEX were on the committee. ALEX 9I} was able to get a good deal at a friends restaurant called CAFE 20 SOUTH. We will have our annual affair there o9J}n Wednesday February 19 at 7PM. The address is 1084 Grand Ave. It is in Baldwin right off and south of the SOUT9K}HERN STATE PARK WAY Exit #20. COMMITTEE REPORTS: The NOMINATING COMMITTEE recommended that all present of9L}ficers of the club stand for re-election. All present officers agreed to run for re-election. Elections will be 9M}held at our February meeting. TREASURER: The treasurer gave his report. We are in the black, and doing well. NE9N}WSLETTERS: ALAN SHARKIS the Newsletter Review Editor reminded the club if they wanted to read any article t9O}hey should notify him so he can bring in the appropriate newsletter. There s a wealth of info in those newsletters. 9P} From FRANTIC - THE ALAMO ATARI CLUB. JOHN HARDIE one of our members whom we cannot get in touch with, informed th9Q}e FRANTIC club that he was at the CHICAGO COMPUTER FEST and bought several boxes of goodies. JOHN give us a call. We 9R}miss you. CORRESPONDENCE: A letter from our VIRGINIA BEACH MEMBERS, MIKE and GINA BRYANT to RON. They wrote and 9S}said they miss our club and the fellowship it offered. They moved to Virgina Beach and they are looking for an At9T}ari Club down there. All the members of the club send you guys a BIG HELLO, and we miss both of you and the girls9U} too! MIKE's ship is just back from a European cruise, and he will be off again to other parts. MIKE dont get a s9V}well head, but you sure look great in that Petty Officer sailors uniform! We received a letter from9W} HADJILA NASSERDDINE in Algeria. He is looking for a book on Assembly Language programming and also disk on that s9X}ubject. He has a 65XE computer. ALAN SHARKIS was appointed to contact HADJILA. A letter to SAM COREY. SAM has bee9Y}n MOST HELPFUL in building up our PD library. ALEX sent SAM a copy of the DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM as well as an early 9Z}release of our newsletter. We want to thank SAM for his suggestions on improving the DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.9[} A letter from BRUCE WILLIS who is the new and overloaed, 8 BIT club librarian of M.A.G.I.C., in IOWA. BRUCE 9\}sent us a bunch of backdated newsletter disks, and we thank him. ALEX asked BRUCE to send us the other missing newsl9]}etter disks. A hint to all OL' H people.....Get those disks, they are very interesting and very well done, definitely 9^} worth having. They are in the LIBRARY. A letter from TOM ANDREWS. TOM tells us that KEN WICKERT of ACE OF SYR9_}ACUSE the 8-Bit editor is now the ST EDITOR. TOM ANDREWS wrote a very nice review on SIGN MAKER in the JAN/FEB 1999`}2 of their newsletter. It is a very interesting article. If you get a chance you should read it. It works with Print 9a}Shop Icons. TOM is working on an update on PRINTSTAR and REFORMAT. We can't wait to see this baby! SX212 MODEM TIP9b}, from TOM. "If you are using an 850 interface or a PR CONNECTION interface you should connect the modem to that ra9c}ther than in the daisy chain. If you are in a daisy chain setup and you want to abort the operation sometimes th9d}e modem does not hang up. When you use an 850 or a PR CONNECTION this does not happen because the modem driver is l9e}oaded from the interface. If you are in a daisy chain set up and the modem does not hang up HIT RETURN and then the ABOR9f}T KEY again. This will do it!" This tip is ve ry welcome, TOM. BOB TERM version 1.22 will also fix this problem. 9g} Tom also sent us a copy of P.S. Labels (Print Shop Utility Disk). The program was not issuing enough line feeds between the labels. If you have a problem "add a9r}nother ? #C2 to the beginning of line 3740". A letter from NIEK VANDERLEE wishes all the members a Merry9s} Christmas and a Happy New Year. He went to Holland on vacation. He said there was very little 8-Bit Atari stuff. 9t}[Ed. Say, NIEK, any chance you will be coming to New York and to Long Island in the next vacation?] A letter to 9u}JOHN MC GOWAN. We sent JOHN a donation of $10.00 in recognition for his many outstanding 8-Bit programs. We hope 9v}he continues his good work. Our club decided to send a letter and a token of appreciation to BOB PUFF for his9w} outstanding work for the 8-Bit community. The treasurer was instructed to send a letter and a donation of $10.00. We a9x}lso hope he continous his good work. A letter to HACE the Houston Atari Club to Harold Gaily. ALEX aske9y}d for the docs of PICPRINT HIGHLIGHTS and PICRDEMO.ARC. It turns out it is not a program but a demo disk. 9z} A letter to TOM HUNT by ALEX. ALEX has used SNAPSHOT and he asked TOM if he had an upgrade available. TOM has al9{}so worked on TURBO BASIC and many other programs. We sent TOM a copy of our DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. DEMO's:9|} RON FETZER demoed Ver.2.0 of the DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. RON added another program to Disk #1 called TITLE L9}}ABELS. This program will print a 3 line title label for a disk that is on one subject or is a copy of a commercial pro9~}gram. RON felt that this would be more informative than listing all the files. This program can also print address 9} labels. Disk #2 of the program was not changed. The W.A.N.D. of the Westchester Atari Group devoted the ent9}ire January issue to disk maintenance and cataloging. Dr. ROLAND HERMAN the editor and president of the club dev9}oted 4 pages to the DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. Thank you WESTCHESTER ATARI CLUB. Dr. ROLAND HERMAN tr9}ied out the DISK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM and he recommends it. AL ATKINS demoed a great combo of TOM ANDREWS 9} printing utility using PRINTSTAR and COL40. AL made up a great disk of the two, and distributed one to ea9}ch member of the club. You now can print out any kind of text material in 2 or 3 columns using this program. Instead 9}of going through 19 steps we now can do it in only 5 steps thanks to AL ATKINS, and TOM ANDREWS. ALEX demonstra9}ted the new BELLCOM menu. It has many great features that you may want. They are on the JAN. 1992 AIM disk. It 9}had an ARC'd program called DRAW 7. with full docs. Software Infinity made up the DEC 1991 issue of the AIM d9}isk. It has many great games on side #2. These AIM disks are really loaded with ARC'd files, and will be foun9}d in our LIBRARY. We next saw a number game with DIGITIZED VOICE, from Germany. It was not a "SAM" disk. ALEX dem9}onstrated the AIM 1992 disk and all its program. We saw a COLOR TETRUS type game demonstrated by ALEX. Ver9}y interesting. You match the colors. Its not for you if you are color blind. It will be in the library. It is ca9}lled "ULTRA TETRUS". We then saw a great ABBUC disk with fantastic graphics, as usual. JACK GEDALIUS demonstr9}ated a light pen he bought from Best Electronics. It comes with a cartridge. It has drop down menues.9} The light pen socket will not easily fit into some 130XE joystick ports. What you have to do for a simple fix, is to 9} take use an extension, or to take off the case on the 130XE and enlarge the joystick port #1 so it will fit. Its v9}ery easy to do. JACK showed us the different menues that come with the program. We saw the different resolutions 9} with the pen and the various colors you can use. He showed us the different geometric figures it can produce, from c9}ircles to rectangles. You can fill in the shapes with colors. You can also print text in various sizes. You can 9}magnify your creation. You can do mirror images, make 4 or 8 copies of the drawing on the screen. You can fill i9}n each mirror image with different colors. JACK put on such a terrific demonstration that all the members of the c9}lub who were present, decided to buy a light pen. ALEX is going to contact the store to see if we can get a discoun9}t on a large order. JACK really got the membership excited about the light pen. A well done job JACK! The price of the9} pen is $25.00 from Best Electronics in California. ()()()()()() Presidents Message by ALEX PIGNATO Without going into details, I I}mustsay that 1991 was a 50/50 year for mepersonally. However it was a great yearfor the OL' HACKERS, and in fact it has bI}een a banner year. We increasedour membership by over 30 %, and wegot some really great new members whocompliment the greI}at members we alreadyhad. The NEWSLETTER has been a greatsuccess, and we owe our first gratitudeto our newly departed frieI}nd KRISHOLTEGAARD to whom this issue has beendedicated, and who was the one who byhimself, created the nucleous forit. KRI}IS was joined in his effortsfirst by RON FETZER, and then by ourSYRACUSE member TOM ANDREWS, (also amember of A.C.E. SyracI}use) who both worked on the printing phase. KRIS wasvery proud of our NEWSLETTER, as much I was. Then through the efforts I}ofCARLOS HURTADO, my Co-Editor, with whomwe worked as a well oiled team, we wereable to put out a NEWSLETTER which hasgaiI}ned favorable widespread recognitionthroughout out the 8 BIT world. I'm hoping to see an even better1992, and so far I}we are going in the right direction. All the prior officershave agreed to remain in their respective positions, which augI}ers wellfor the club, While the NEWSLETTERcontinues to receive praise.Meanwhile, there is a ground swellof support for 8 I}BIT owners through theefforts of people like JEFF McWilliamsand BEN POEHLAND, who are behind a bigpush to show ATARI INTERI}FACE MAGAZINEthat there is a broad base of 8 BITfolk, asking them to create an all 8BITmagazine. BEN tells me that Ads wilI}lrun in CURRENT NOTES, AIM, & EXPLORER,so look for them. He advises that 1100mailings are planned by MARCH 31, at the ratI}e of 100 information kits per week. This project will involve 7000xeroxes, and 3500 labels, all done asvolunteer work, andI} privately financed.as well If these two people can do such aherculan job, the very least we shoulddo is to send in oI}ur postcards to theaddress in the Ads, or to BENJAMIN L.POEHLAND, 179 SPROUL Rd./Rt. 352,Frazer, PA 19355-1958. Be sure toI}include your name, address, and phonenumber and ask for the 8 BIT KIT. TheOL' HACKERS have already submitted their names,I} and we are backing thiseffort fully, and so should all of youthat read this message. it only takesa few seconds and it maI}y bring in a bigreward if we are jointly sucessful.
